Why four stars for a dive??? Well I ordered fish n when I arrived to pick up that place was gross looking and it is in desperate need of a facelift. So when I went outside there was a BBQ shack smokehouse, it was a Friday and I was very hungry at lunchtime. I got four bones that's ribs, potato salad and beans. I must say I was completely and utterly surprised how good it was i'm talking these ribs were so flavorful and had a smoke ring so they were cooked a very long time. I'm not a fan of this fish market, if you want to call it that. When my mother was in town one year she wanted to have a fish fry, so after doing a web search I settled on this place. My first impression of this place when I got there was, "Are you serious?!" There were flies, dead fish with milky eyes, and some bad customer service. I was ready to turn back but my mother, who God bless could have charmed Hitler, made the best of it. By the end of our visit my mother had the guys behind the counter telling her their life story, offering tips on which fish to and not to buy, and inquiring about my relationship status. Got to love her. I will say that fish for all it was worth was finger licking good after my mom brought it home and fried it up. I have not eaten here yet, so my 4 stars is just based on the take out fish. I picked up a pound of flounder filets to take home and cook myself. I had found a great recipe for pan fried flounder with lemon and capers. It was incredible. The fish was really good, didn't smell, was cheap and the guys at the counter were very helpful. I hope to try eating here soon so I can finish my review, but as a place to buy a variety of fish like grouper, tilapia, flounder, black bass, whiting, etc., its awesome. Decor? I'm from South Florida, so I'm quite familiar with seafood, especially the "You buy we fry" restaurants. Merkerson's sells fresh fish but you don't get to pick out your fish, and that's ok, because this place is A W E S O M E !!! I ordered the beam and it was seasoned wonderfully, and they weren't tiny. The beam were fresh and the price was good. This is now my favorite seafood place in Atlanta. Truth be known, they really don't have much competition, but they are still awesome in their own rite. A coworker of mine told me about this spot, and said they have asn AUC special for just a couple of dollars! I dove on the idea of getting a quick inexpensive meal. I was pleasantly surprised by the portions. We got the chance to chat up Robert behind the counter and learned that they have been open for 27 years. Im glad to see black owned businesses with longevity operating in the area. I will say the facility itself leaves alot to be desired, and is in great need of a swift make-over and revitalization in 2018. Merkerson's word of the year should be revitalization. That applies to the structure, the customer service, and definitely the branding. read more

Good fresh seafood to take home, delicious, cheap takeout. The only reason I took off a star was because of the décor, if you can call it that. It's a hole in the wall so there's your fair warning regarding that. Clean where it counts. The 4 stars stem from the fact that I am big on appearance/customer service I feel like people eat with their eyes first and the establishment leaves a lot to be desired in that dept. Additionally the the cashier was not one for small talk more of a point and grunt cro-magnon man type but polite so eh... Moving along the food is Fresh.. HAVE to be paying off first the Food and Drug Administration the health department and code enforcement!! This is an old abandoned warehouse that's poorly ventilated you can smell the fish blocks down the street and the cobwebs that's on every corner and every wall and underneath all of the cabinets and in the cracks and crevices of this dump is black so that clearly tells you they don't clean at all disgusting!! a public menace! And you leave out smelling like old fish, not to mention that even if you were to order it takes them almost an hour for one order and that's calling ahead of time and I can't understand why ei that is because they have very few customers. But If you are down to earth, love GOOD food, and know that sometimes a hole in the wall has THE BEST eating, then Merkerson's is the place for you. I had gotten a seafood dinner from here YEARS ago after traffic court one day, but hadn't been back since. Stopped in yesterday on my way home from a trip to the West End Mall. I got a 3 piece Trout dinner with fries. Let's just say that the fish smelled so good, that I had to break a piece off and eat it in the car before I could get back to Buckhead. Three of us went here, including my friend who is a native Atlantan and a visitor from New York. We all ordered something different and sampled each other's--it was all delicious--but especially the ribs! Also had the fried trout and pulled barbecue with sides of cole slaw. Also very generous portions for a small price! We enjoyed sitting outside on the couple of benches as it was a warm, sunny day. Inside is not very appealing to stay and eat. The owner was friendly and told us they're planning to add grilled corn on the cob and barbecue turkey breast to the barbecue menu. Wish they'd do turkey wings or drumsticks too! I held off on writing this until I contacted Merkerson's to make my comments known. A few days ago, I purchased whiting and trout from this market. I live a short distance away (less than 3 miles) before I got home the fish was smelling. Smelling bad. I took the fish out and rinsed it, and the whiting was fine, but the trout still smelled bad---way fishy. I cooked the whiting and called the market the next day to ask for a manager. The person I spoke with went into this soliloquy about how all fish has a smell and then he told me that some of the fish is purchased frozen then resold. I explained that I've purchased fish before that didn't funk up my car before I got it home. He kept explaining about the distinctive odors all fish have. I wasn't trying to get my money back, but at least wanted some acknowledgement that they sold me some funky fish. I'll just keep buying mine from Dekalb Farmer's Market.
