I know people who have been coming/going to Merk's for decades, but I only managed to start coming within the last 4 or so months. I've had their pizza (delicious), garlic knots (extremely delicious), and chicken & dumplings (also extremely delicious). I think they're closed on Mondays, and I honestly keep forgetting to look their hours/days of operation up, but I've shown up a couple of times on Mondays really craving some Merk's food and they aren't open. That's my fault, but I thought it was nice that they're the type of place to develop a craving for so I figured I'd mention it. I haven't been there in over a month or so, but the last time I was there, they were running the place with the bare minimum amount of employees. Conveniently, on the days I've visited, I wasn't in a rush to get anywhere after my meal. That being said, if you have a limited amount of time for your meal, you probably shouldn't try to dine in at Merk's. If you know what you want ahead of time, you might be able to call in an order to go and wing it that way? I just enjoy getting to eat outside of my car, honestly. So you need to have a ton of patience (and topics to discuss to fill the time) if you choose to dine in. read more

Went window shopping in downtown Farmville, VA, and asked the locals where to eat and they recommended Merk's Place, and that's usually a good sign. It's your typical small town locally owned family restaurant, but we were impressed with the wide choice of menu options, everything from burgers and dogs to fried catfish and chicken cordon bleu to prime rib and a seafood platter with oysters. My wife's fried chicken sandwich was a real chicken breast and not a patty. My 1/3 pound mushroom burger was ample and had plenty of mushrooms. Everything came out of the kitchen HOT and we both had plenty to eat. I think both of our plates were under $8.00 each plus $1.95 for a soft drink. The server was friendly and pleased to hear it was our first visit. There were a number of locals there even around 3:00 on a Saturday afternoon. Our server said the place had been in business for 15 years, so they must be doing something right. My only ding is very minor, as I ordered a side dish of cole slaw and it was okay, but next time I'll skip it. Overall, we left very full, very pleased and not very broke. Good value for the money. Came across this place through Yelp while traveling through the area. Menu had a lot of choices! Ordered garlic knots and a supreme pizza. The garlic knots we're huge and straight out of the oven. Pizza had fresh ingredients and also served fresh out of the oven. You can tell the building has been there a while and could probably use some TLC. And some of the wait staff at the counter was talking about a customer who had called in an order where those seated could hear so I imagine the actual customer could hear the negativity, hence the lower rating. read more

Great little diner on the outskirts of Farmville! Open early, closes late! Everything here is homemade and served in plentiful portions!!! Nothing is pre-cooked so if you have any certain way you want it prepared they are more than happy to accommodate you! The menu is extensive and the wait staff is wonderful if you should have any questions! I am crazy for their tuna fish subs. It's chunk albacore and mayonnaise. Super simple but served on a homemade hoagie roll and toasted! It's just perfect! You can get French fries or chips or fruit on the side but the sandwich is so big, I can only eat half! Much less any extra sides:) My partner orders the club sandwich which is stacked high with mounds of meat, cheese, bacon, crisp lettuce and bright red tomatoes! He's a club sandwich guy and says it's the best he's had anywhere. If you can, save room for dessert. Not only do they make their own shakes and sundaes, but their cakes??? Oh my.... Not only are they beautiful but they are luscious as well. They even make GFCF cakes for people who have allergies. Prices are incredibly fair considering the amount of food that you receive. Locals eat here to include first responders, farmers, Farmville residents and people traveling through. You are always greeted with a smile and the people from Farmville are always friendly. The waitress was very nice even tho the service was slow. We came in right at the 11am for breakfast and were told they stop serving at 11am while the table next to was ordering breakfast. Several people who came in after us go their food before we did. We ended up ordering a BLT and a steak sub. The BLT had no lettuce and only 2 small pieces of bacon, and came with chips and a pickle. The steak sub apparently did not come with a side and was cold from sitting in the window for so long. It's very difficult to support small business when the service is and quality of food is worse than the chain restaurants. read more
