This shop is very cool and very big. My brother and I visited and spent a good amount of time digging through back issues. I collect '90s X-Men and my brother collects the current run of Marvel's Star Wars and Merlyn's had a great selection of each. They charge cover price for back issues, which isn't low but also is less than some other shops. It also appears they have a good gaming station for non-COVID times. There's a bathroom as well. They also sell Magic Cards and your other usual comic store stuff. Finally, the staff member who helped us out was super kind and conversational. A place I'd be happy to return to. read more

If you're a gamer or a comics nerd, you've got to stop at Merlyn's the next time you're in Spokane. They've got a solid collection of current comics titles as well as TPB's and a fair amount of recent books needed to keep your collection current. And, I was particularly surprised by the abundant stock of game titles, including my favorites Flames of War and Bolt Action. Heck, they even had Tanks on hand. With an adjoining pub and a good number of gaming tables, you even could set aside the afternoon for a few cold brews with your buddies and a couple of hours of fast paced board game action. read more

First, the good: this place is huge. Quite a selection of various and sundry geekdom detritus. Their primary focus seems to be tabletop games and comic books. They also have some collectibles, paperbacks, etc. etc. It seems to be the only LCS (local comic shop for any normies reading this) in downtown Spokane, so that's a bonus, relatively speaking. The bad: I poked my head in here three times this week while visiting downtown Spokane and was never greeted or approached. Ok, perhaps this is not such a bad thing if you like to explore without being bothered. The ugly: I was really hoping to pick up some recent Image and/or Black Mask back issues. They do have a couple of very small boxes of recent back issues, but everything else is in their big bins. I found browsing the big bins to be pretty frustrating - they're ostensibly in alphabetical order, but not very well sorted and a lot of their stuff is mid-90's crap. It was a nice trip down memory lane ("cool, they've got seven copies of Turok, Dinosaur Hunter #1!"), but I couldn't find anything I would've bought without a hefty discount, and it wasn't really clear whether their old stuff was discounted or, if so, how much. Maybe I missed the signage (Yelpers are saying its 50% off, but I'm not sure Merlyn's still offers that deal). My third visit was on Wednesday, new comic book day!!! Finally found something I could justify paying cover price for: the new issue of Paper Girls and Batman: White Knight #1. Amazingly, both of them were the only one on the rack. I guess that explains why they don't have many recent back issues. Summing up, Merlyn's seems like a great place to do some gaming, and look at some really nerdy stuff. As an LCS, it'll do in a pinch if you happen to be in downtown Spokane, but you're probably not going to find that one thing you've been looking for. read more

I stopped in after spending the night in Spokane. Decent store. They seem to specialize in tabletop games but not much else. Pretty standard fare for Comics and cards. Staff was decently friendly. Seemed weird that some of their wall books were in direct sunlight. Not a store you have to visit if you go through town. Paying for parking sucks but that's almost any downtown in a city. read more

They were doing some re-organization when my husband and I came to check out the place. There were tables of kids in the back playing games and constructing models. Definitely a different scene in here. Merlyn's has a ton of comics, action figures, t-shirts, and other merch. They had this Firefly flag for $40 I wanted really bad. Wish they had more Firefly/Serenity stuff, but I did get one of the comics. My husband got a couple Spawn comics and a zombie apocalypse book. I got stuck in the book section for a while, there's an assortment of graphic novels, art collections, and novels there. I could've spent all day flipping through them. Definitely the best comic book store in Spokane. They always update their new comics every Wednesday when new comics release, they update their back issued comic section frequently, and the store itself is always tidy and organized. They offer great discounts everyday, ten-percent off everything in the store and fifty-percent off of comics older than 2007, and their subscription service includes the ten-percent discount which is awesome for avid collectors. The staff are always friendly and attentive, and are always able to help with questions or concerns, and their product knowledge is top notch. John Waite the owner recognizes my girlfriend and I by name and is always willing to spare a minute with us which really makes want to come back and chat about the latest in comics. The store is a geek haven with little frills and much character. Upon entry you are greeted by a dragon statue and a wall of comics. Furthermore, if gaming is your thing, your will find a large assortment of role playing game books, minis, board games and the like. The entire back of the store is dedicated to gaming tables and their late night hours allow you to play well into the evening. All of this probably stands as solid 4-star comic/gaming shop fare, and maybe it is, but it is the owner, John, and his staff who give Merlyn's it's 5th star and inspires the fierce loyalty you see from the fellow Yelpers. Return a few times and will probably start being greeted by name. Come frequently and you'll likely get a friendly recommendation on a great new game or comic you might enjoy. Open up a comic subscription box and you might find that they have tossed an extra no-pressure issue in there because it looked like something you like. I can't say enough good about Merlyn's and its staff. They are truly top notch and you owe it to yourself to become a regular of this local gem. While I'm usually in Merlyn's because my fiance brings me along, I always appreciate the friendly staff. There are loads of playing tables in the back for all kinds of games, and this shop seems like a place where gamers can gather. I went to Merlyn's for the first time for a Magic the Gathering pre-release, but I would never have guessed it would have been my last visit to Merlyn's. The layout of the store itself was dull and felt like a giant warehouse instead of an actual business, there seemed to be no real displays just product thrown onto shelves. The actual playing area for the event was an array of plastic tables thrown together with mismatched chairs, and felt more like school cafeteria than an actual competition area. The event itself was pretty terrible, even though I had paid and registered that day I was not posted on the pair bracket, the promised merchandise packs were not given out due to late shipping (this itself was excusable, until I found out that other shops had made the necessary precautions in case this was to happen and insured theirs were shipped earlier), what's worse with the merchandise pack is that even though the store promised it would be in by the following day, the packs were still not there three days later. Since I was from out of town I was not able to wait for the store to finally get the packs, so I contacted the manager of the store who promptly informed me that there was no way they could ship it to me and no other person was allowed to pick it up for me so they could ship it to me themselves. After quite a bit of arguing I was finally able to get the store manager to agree that someone could pick the merchandise for me, though this compromise came after around over 20 minutes of arguing and multiple calls to the store. The only redeeming part of this experience at all was the employee working there at the time. They were friendly, and seemed to really care about both the customers and their job. read more

I went into the store today to pick up my subscriptions, only to find that they were no longer pulling them for me. Back in April, after the unfortunate closing of Sack Lunch Comics, I started getting my comics at your store. I made an arrangement with the employee that took my subscriptions to come in every 6-8 weeks, rather than the 4 that was usual, because I had to drive 45 minutes to pick them up. I had already picked them up once since starting this arrangement. That means that I was still holding to my 6 weeks that I had agreed to. I always try to make my purchases in a store, rather than the internet, in order to help local businesses. I was told by the owner that because he "doesn't know me" that he couldn't make that exception, despite his employee already having made that commitment. He wouldn't honor the arrangement made by his employee because I wasn't someone he knew personally. When we first moved to Idaho I picked up my comics from Lightning Comics, never once missing an issue. After that, I picked up my subscriptions from Hastings without once missing an issue until I moved those subscriptions to Sack Lunch Comics. I picked up my subscriptions from Sack Lunch from the day they opened until the day they closed. I made a long drive today, for the express purpose of coming to your store, only to be told that you wouldn't be honoring your commitments to me as a customer. At a time when comic book stores are closing because of a lack of customers you decided not to bother getting to know me as a customer and to insure that I would become yet another comic reader that is forced to turn to the internet to fulfill his subscriptions. That is incredibly disappointing, cost me 100 miles of driving, and has guaranteed that I will not be setting foot in your store again. I wish you the best of luck but I imagine that with this type of service no amount of luck will matter. read more

This place is rad. I'm so glad there's still a B&M comic shop in Spokane. The staff is friendly, the location is fantastic, and I find myself browsing for a while without getting uncomfortable or antsy. I appreciate their flat 10% everything policy, and it's only a financial weakness on my part that I can't afford to get a pull box anymore, but these are my go-to folks for all things sci-fi/fantasy. read more

I had my first warhammer experiences here, and i have to say i had a lot of fun. The atmosphere when the owners are there could be a little better though, they don't seem to interact with the customers very often or well. Two of the employee's though who are usually present during tournaments really make up for this though, making the place a lot of fun. I still prefer Gamers Haven in Post Falls, ID, but this is a great place to play and a lot closer to home. read more

Absolutely awful service. I went in here to try and sell some old comic books that I had found in my basement. Walked in and was told that the manager named John would be back in a few minutes to assist me. After about 15 minutes the gentleman at the counter told me that it would be awhile before John came back and to leave my name and number and he would call me as soon as I got back. After waiting at home for three hours with no phone call I decided to call the store. The phone was picked up with a very annoyed sounding "Hello?". After asking if this was Merlyns to make sure I got the right number the man on the phone said it was. I explained how I came in earlier and never got a call back. The man on the phone who turned out to be John said he was super busy and didn't have time. He then asked me what the comic books I was selling were and after I told him he said they were worthless and that he wasn't interested then hung up. Well these comics turned out to be pretty rare and definitely valuable. I took them to The Comic Book Shop and got $300 for the whole set which was an extremely fair price. So all in all it is a decent store when it comes to comic books but the staff is absolutely horrible. I will not be going back or recommending anybody to this place. The Comic Book Shop is much nicer and the staff there is extremely polite and knowledgable, plus they don't talk down to you like they do here. read more
