As a family living in Hawaii, finding quality reading intervention for our son felt nearly impossible. He was diagnosed with dyslexia in 4th grade, and as his mom, I felt completely helpless because Hawaii simply doesn't have the specialized resources for intensive reading remediation that children with dyslexia need. We were referred to Merrill Educational Center by our neuropsychologist at Golden State Neuropsychology, and it was one of the best recommendations we've ever received. Even though we live out of state, Nicole and Lynne worked with us over Zoom, making it possible for our son to receive the instruction he desperately needed. They used the Lindamood-Bell Seeing Stars® program along with Direct Reading Therapy, and the progress has been incredible. Not only has our son's reading improved tremendously, but so has his confidence. During 2020 it became clear that both of my grandchildren would need help as we would homeschool them during the first year of the pandemic. Neither child knew how to read at the time. They were 8 and 6, and really needed help. With her knowledge and patience, Lynne Merrill began to work with them, and within the year they were both reading, above grade level! I am excited to share my experience with you and hope that you learn from our journey: Our daughter was struggling with math since 3rd grade, yet in good academic standing in all areas. I am an educator and my husband is a civil engineer, we thought we were proactive by hiring a 'tutor' over the summer from 3rd to 4th grade (two times per week for a minimal fee). It seemed to help in the moment, but when our daughter started 4th grade she continued to struggle with inconsistencies in her math performance which started to play a role in her confidence. After her first semester of 4th grade, I knew I needed to get to the bottom of this. I wanted my daughter to be confident in math and not assume if it's hard she just can't do it, or worse that she would develop a false mindset believing she will not need math. As an educator for 12 years, I am well aware of the research and positive outcomes of early intervention. I reached out to a friend of mine who is a world renowned pediatric neuropsychologist and she immediately referred us to Nicole. Our meeting with Nicole was to first assess what are we dealing with here: math LD? Laziness? Gaps in her learning that needs extra attention? Processing speed or attention issues? I knew that I could not implement a support plan without knowing the facts about our daughters learning profile. Nicole was warm and personable and our daughter connected with her right away. The baseline testing results indicated what we knew: our daughter had a wide range of very low benchmarks in math, yet also had many strengths, too! The "gap" of her abilities was very frustrating for her and us as parents. Nicole was able to rule out that she does not have a math LD and she's the opposite of 'lazy'. This data allowed Nicole to target her learning goals by using the Lindamood-Bell (an intensive and comprehensive math therapy program). It was a significant investment of time and money, but I knew that our daughter had to fill in these gaps in her math foundational skills in order for her to continue with math in the years to come. I wanted her to have a solid foundation in math which would boost her confidence in that she has the tools to learn, apply and master the content. After four months of intensive math therapy, our daughter's confidence and overall growth in her math skills demonstrated exceptional growth!!! This July she now has even math skills at average or above average for her age/grade level with addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, problem solving, charts/tables/graphs, and rational numbers. The data from January to July is truly remarkable, but most importantly our daughter does not have meltdowns about math, she embraces the challenge, she participates in math class and asks questions! I choose this positive outlook on math any day, over grades. Our daughter has asked to continue to see Nicole once per week for math maintenance as she enters into 5th grade this fall. We're grateful that we made the sacrifice to invest in our daughter's math skills and working with Nicole was a blessing for (us) and especially our sweet daughter. Well it's been a long road, but luckily Merrill Educational Center was with us EVERY step of the way. Once upon a time, our high-achieving 4th grader was struggling with ADD and an executive functioning disorder, resulting in a sudden dip in self esteem that left us feeling helpless. Took my kid here for tutoring and we were very disappointed with their teachers. Seems like the teachers have no credentials and no patience for our kids. We first came to Merrill Education Center because my younger son had such math anxiety that it affected not only math, but his entire days at school. After 5 weeks of math therapy with Nicole, my son was like a new kid. His math anxiety was greatly decreased to where he's now confident in math, getting A's in the subject, and most importantly, he's having good days at school. Now, both my boys (13 and 10 yrs), go once a week for math tutoring, because in their words, "When she explains it, I get it in an instant". There's something special about her way with mathematical concepts and explanations, and her firm but gentle way with the kids keeps them motivated, on task and encouraged. Towards the end of 4th grade. we discovered my seemingly intelligent son was having some funky reading problems. After getting testing done with Merrill Ed, we discovered he had been memorizing words and not applying phonics. Merrill recommended a 50 hour course to straighten him out. He was able to plow through the course in less than 25 hours. He did very well on his SATs and is currently a freshman in college and even received a scholastic scholarship. For the last 5 years we have used Merrill Educational center for educational therapy for both my sons. Lynne helped tremendously in improving my son's reading comprehension scores as well as reading fluency and grammar. She helped my son learn study skills that he now uses successfully for all of his tests. She also helped guide us through the process of acquiring a 504 plan at school. If I could give 10 stars, I would! Lynn is what I call our Reading Angel. I walked in feeling uncertain about how I was going to get my son the help he needed after being told he was dyslexic and was 3 grades behind in reading. From the first meeting I felt like I was in the right place. Lynn is truly a reading expert. She knew exactly what my son needed and she explained it to my 10 year old in such a respectful and kind way....a way that made him feel like there was nothing wrong with needing some help. There are many tutors and specialists out there that offer to help students with reading, but Lynn's expertise is on another level. After about 4 months, my son was reading at grade level. My son was having trouble with his comprehension. I took him to MEC and had him tested. The testing and the results given were very in depth giving me a clear picture of where he was at his grade level, where he was above grade level and most importantly where he needed help. What I originally thought was a huge problem wound up being an easy fix. I would have never known where to focus in and help my son if it wasn't for MEC and Lynne Merrill. If I could give Merrill Education Center ten stars, it still would not be enough. My son had lost his confidence in middle school, was bullied and went from an A/B student to a C/D student. Basically he gave up. After deciding to homeschool him I knew we needed help with the subjects he would be taking to be college bound, although he was saying he would not be going to college. MEC came into our lives and everything changed. My son felt safe and soon, smart again and excelled at all levels throughout high school because of the wonderful teachers here. He is now preparing to graduate with his Baccalaureate in Computer Engineering with honors and was invited by the school to apply for their masters program, which he has accepted. I credit his turn around to Merrill Education Center completely. I have always known my son was smart and the teachers here could see this too and helped him to reach his potential and exceed even his expectations.
