I have nothing but good things to say about my experience with Merrill Gardens at Sheldon Park. I have worked in Senior Adult Living, in many compacities, for over 40 years. In my current position as a Placement Agent, I work with families to help them find a community that fits their individual needs. I love helping them navigate through what can be a very difficult process. Many times, Merrill Gardens is a good match. These are some of the reasons why: The number of Nurses they have on their team is a real plus. They have 4. Identifying changes in condition, as a person ages, can help prevent larger problems if not addressed. Avoiding larger problems leads to having a better quality of life. It is one of the biggest reasons people move to an Assistant Living Community. Having 4 nurses is a great advantage in that process. Sheldon park has more nurses than most. The fact that Shelden Park provides a Move-In Co-ordinator dedicated to new residents and their families helps the difficult transition of moving go so much more smoothly. Sheldon Park has a seasoned team with a Management Team who has come up through the ranks and has great experience. Many members of that team have dedicated 15 or more years of service to this community. They have a lot of pride and have helped establish a solid reputation they plan to continue. The Manager makes herself available when residents and families have concerns or questions and just need to talk with someone in charge. She has been a part of Sheldon Park for almost 20 years. That is almost unprecedented in this industry. The Activity Director has been a part of this team since it opened 20 plus years ago and she has received awards on the State Level for the programs she provides. The activities are fun, educational, support physical fitness and many times, are specific to support good brain health. Their Bridges Program is one of a kind in this area. It provides extra support for residents who may be starting to have problems associated with dementia so they can live in Assisted Living longer before potentially needing to transition to a Memory Care Community. Truly, Sheldon Park is a great community that is worth considering if you are looking into Assisted Living or Memory Care options for you or a family member. As a professional who helps people navigate through the many choices in Eugene for senior living, I am often encouraging people to look beyond what they see on an initial tour- the pretty decorating and the size of the model apartments. When someone needs to move from their home in order to receive personal care, medication services or specialized dementia care, ask about the activities program, ask about staff training, and ask about staff retention. I refer people to Sheldon Park because I know the staff there strive for excellence. They continually adjust their programs & activities to meet the needs of their residents. Staff is friendly and helpful. Location is excellent and convenient. Building is well-kept and clean. Rooms are on the small side. "Community fee" is a one-time cover charge which is more than three to five times what most other venues charge and I don't see the value. If you are a senior needing assistance, the three things in life that matter are food, clothing and shelter. Clothing not much, food a lot. The food at Sheldon Park is abominable. A donut and a link sausage for breakfast one fine Saturday morning. A glob of something unnamed one day for lunch. Given the monthly rent, by far one of the most expensive spots in town, one would think these seniors might be awarded some healthy, fresh food. Instead, as they enter their Elder years, they are treated to a high-fat, high-sugar diet. My rating for the positive attributes at Sheldon Park is diminished by the lack of nutrition and concern for health of our Seniors. read more

Your review helps others learn about great local businesses. One of the hardest decisions for any family to make is to send an aging parent to Assisted Living or "the home" as some people call it. Our 89 year old mother was recovering from serious health issues and because of the need for trained medical care and management of medications we were unable to care for her at home. We talked about Assisted Living for a short period while she recovered and selected Sheldon Park because of the beautiful facility, incredible staff and the care available. Mom is now recovered and when asked about moving back home she tells us to move somebody else into the house because she is having too much fun at Sheldon Park. They handle her medications, do the cooking, spoil her with kindness and care and best of all give her the opportunity to choose every day what activity she is going to participate in. She has made numerous friends and enjoys visiting daily with all of therm. In fact, it is hard to ever find her in her room because she is a very happy and busy lady. Sheldon Park is an amazing place with incredible caregivers, staff and administrators. We highly recommend it!!!. read more

I had the opportunity to tour at Sheldon Park recently. The atmosphere was so welcoming and friendly, it felt like walking into a friends home. Everyone was so friendly, it was very clean and nicely decorated. All the Residents that we came across were happy to talk to us and raved about the activity program. They have activities 7 days a week and a large variety in order to cater to as many Residents as possible. The staff were very good with the Residents and I enjoyed the tour very much. read more

I recently visited Sheldon Park Senior Living. I was very impressed by the warm and inviting feel of the community upon arrival. The staff was very friendly and the residents were great. I had the pleasure of meeting a few of the residents who were enjoying their time playing pool, dancing, and making crafts in the Activity Room. While touring the facility, I came upon a beautiful outdoor common area, a great Activity Room, and a SPA where the residents can receive rejuvenating treatments and get their hair done. The live in rooms were very inviting and the facility was so clean. You can tell the employees put great value in the care of their residents at Sheldon Park Senior Living. read more

My 87 and 91 year old parents recently spent three months at Sheldon Park Senior Living facility. Staff were always professional, friendly and helpful, but in the end it was the poor food, high costs, and lack of dependable transportation that led them to leave. My parents complained about the food being unappealing, sometimes cold, with limited choices, and not freshly prepared. Transportation was only available two days a week and then primarily for doctor's visits. After a short stay in the Memory Care unit, my they moved to a 1 bedroom Assisted Living apartment. For the high cost, it didn't seem like much assistance was actually being provided besides doing their laundry for them. It cost an additional $430 a month for them to take care of my mother's medications. My personal pet peeve was the confusing monthly bills from the facility. It seemed like they were designed to confuse an accountant and I can't imagine that very many of the residents were able to make heads or tails of their bills without assistance. Luckily my mother's health and mobility improved enough they were able to return to their previous independent living facility. read more

I was so impressed with the skill, kindness, compassion and high level of care my aunt received here. When she was able, they continually worked to keep her involved and active. My highest praise though is for their care as she declined over the last week, passing away yesterday. I was so moved by the compassion the entire staff showed to her and the family. Her med tech, Matthew, was far above any caregiver I have encountered. If the time comes to need a care facility for my mother, she will go here. read more

Just started the process of looking for a community for my parents. I was immediately impressed with the friendly staff and pleasant environment. The residents sitting in the lobby looked happy and even answered some of my questions. I was taken on a tour (no previous appointment) and enjoyed seeing the different floor plans offered. The apartments were more than adequate and very comfortable looking. I will be back to share with my parents. read more

My husband and I moved his father, "J," into Sheldon Park about a year ago. Initially, it seemed like a wise choice- after all, the building is nice, a range of activities is available, and so on. But as the months went by we became increasingly aware that J's needs were not being met. First, his bathroom was never cleaned. My husband had to go in every week or two to clean the toilets and floors, which were atrociously dirty. The laundry was not washed for several months, despite repeated requests. The bedding was not changed for nine months (yes, nine!), though because we assumed it was being done we did not notice for a long time. The dishes were almost never washed. He never received help with taking a shower, nor with dressing, and would always be wearing the same clothes the next time we went to visit him (even if two weeks had passed). In short, my husband had to take care of the almost all of the basic jobs that were supposed to be addressed by the staff, and which we were paying for. As we learned from an employee, there have been several complaints about similar issues in recent months. Perhaps this facility is severely understaffed, or perhaps the some of the employees are under-trained or underpaid or even willfully neglectful, but whatever the cause I fault the management. This treatment of the elderly and disabled is morally reprehensible. The cost of this facility is outrageous, and superfluous add-ons are often presented as necessary. We we charged several hundred dollars, for example, for "skin checks," which means that a staff member noted whether or not J's skin looked dry (mind you, this "service" did not even include applying lotion!). We had to spend hours working to reverse this charge, which we did not agree to, and it is just one of many fallacious charges we have had to contend with. The monthly fees are over 5,500 now, and all without the toilets even being cleaned or the laundry being washed. We are making other arrangements, and recommend that those considering this facility seriously reconsider. In my experience the managers of this facility have but one motive: filling their rooms with paying customers. They are excellent salespeople, and like all excellent salespeople they can make a bad deal seem appealing. They are not in this business for the right reasons, and the results have been heartbreaking for us. read more

As a professional in the industry for 15+ years, I was very pleased to the welcome I received as soon as I walked through the door at Sheldon Park, Eugene. I received a tour on the spot with no appointment and was very impressed by such cleanliness. More importantly, the staff were super kind and it was clear at Sheldon Park, the residents are provided a safe, secure and loving home. Both the dementia unit and assisted living had a full schedule of all types of activities to encourage neurological stimulation at all different levels. Very impressed! We moved my 97 year old Dad into Sheldon Park from his independent living situation at Willamette Oaks after a fall. We wanted to maintain as much of the environment he had at Willamette Oaks as possible. We have been nothing but pleased with every aspect of his care. A move-in coordinator was assigned to us and stayed with us for the first few weeks until Dad felt comfortable with how things were going. He has a very nice garden apartment that he enjoys very much. Dad has all of his mental faculties so it was important that people treat him as such and that has been the case. The medical staff and caregivers have all been wonderful and he has liked everyone who has come to assist him. You can always give feedback anytime that is listened to and acted upon and the regularly scheduled care conferences pick up any changes that might need to be made that may have been overlooked. Moving to assisted living is a very hard decision to make and the transition can be very stressful. That's why we did our research on the options available in Eugene. Our choice of Sheldon Park was a good one and I would very comfortably recommend them for your loved one. read more

I have been to Sheldon park assisted living on a few different occasions and have found the staff to be very tentative and helpful. The building has always appeared very clean and smells clean. I haven't tried their food there, but it smells good. I always see the residents smiling and active within the building. I will definitely look into this facility for placement of my loved one when the time comes. read more
