Mesa rim has a great facility, but we were pretty disappointed in their summer camp. Instead of letting the kids socialize/experience life/play cards/whatever during down time, they plopped them in front of screens (I guess to save money on staffing?). So our kids came home every day and reported that they'd had hours of screen time at climbing camp. Also, it seems like lots of the campers brought their own iPhones/technology to camp and spent the day watching stuff--or just being distracted--on their individual devices. Would be great Mesa Rim had a policy like other camps do that kids have to leave screens at home or out of sight in backpacks. Like a lot of parents, we sent our kids to camp to get their energy out and be active and social--specifically to get them AWAY from screens. I really hope they correct these things for next summer so we can send our kids back because the climbing part was fun. read more

We've visited here a couple of times to use their bouldering space and have really enjoyed our time. I will say that the front desk staff usually seems very busy, and compared to another climbing gym we frequent, we didn't feel super welcome (might have been because we came with a Groupon?). On our first visit, I had to ask where everything was -- there was no orientation or offer to show us around. I noticed that others were getting orientations, so this might be hit or miss. The bouldering space itself is quite spacious and has lots of different levels of challenge suitable for both kids and adults. There was lots of padding, and I really like the central "rock" island where you can actually climb on top of it. I would say I feel a little intimidated to visit for more than the bouldering, given the fact that the staff doesn't seem overly welcoming and friendly. read more

We took the top rope class with Emory, and she was so sweet and kind. It was our first time learning to climb and we didn't realize what we weee getting into, but she was so patient with us! This place is huge! It's not just a climbing gym, there's a decent sized regular gym, a ping pong table, a sauna, they have bouldering upstairs...the amenities are great (I love having a water bottle refill station). Fun place for some indoor rock climbing, especially if you're looking for a place to escape the TX summer heat! I initially looked up indoor rock climbing gyms and came across this one because the pictures looked very promising. I took their belay lesson because I'm a first time rock climber and learned how to belay someone safely. The instructor was friendly and informative! They gym is massive with several 55 ft high walls that range from easy level to advanced level. Many options to try and very thrilling once you reach the top. Came with a Groupon but honestly if I lived closer I would take advantage of this gym. They offer a class to use the ropes which was fun for me and my 10 year old son. We came to conquer our fear of heights and this place is such a unique experience a definitely an all day activity. I had only planned on 2 hrs but we stayed for 4 and still didn't get to even use the whole gym. Great gym, the biggest in Austin, with a massive rope climbing area with tall walls, most ropes can also be lead climbed. They have a huge variety of straight, inclined, declined, and overhang, with a mix of slab and bouldery climbs. With the large number of climbs there's also a wide range of grades, for everyone from beginner to advanced climbers. The bouldering section upstairs is just an extensive and varied. They also have fitness and yoga classes, free on Sunday for some, a huge sauna, restrooms, lockers and showers, snacks area, and gear. Of course there's a training area with weights, hangboard, kilter board and spray wall, and it's a nice location so unlike other gyms it's easy to find parking. Greatest downfall currently is it's somewhat isolated so you need to drive to get food, a drink, or other. Otherwise it's the best gym in the area and comparable pricing. read more

We are here quite often but I've only climbed 3 times as normally I'll be on the side watching the kids. My husband is a member and he was introduced to Mesa Rim by our surrounding neighbors who are avid climbers when me and the kids were overseas. He talked about how beautiful and well kept the place is but I was skeptical as we've been to other Bouldering places in Austin...and I wasn't too impressed. Fun yes, but fancy? I wasn't expected to be wowed really. Anyway, when we finally visited for the first time, I didn't want to leave. They are super family friendly and have everything you need. I believe diaper changing tables are on the first floor so babies can come too. My oldest kid sometimes would have scratches here and there and she even knows where to find cotton swabs, bandaids, tapes, and hair ties. This place is so clean I want to live here. You can tell the staff really put in a lot of work to have this place running successfully. The restroom upstairs is gender neutral and downstairs are gender specific. The individual stalls in the restroom and shower area are big enough for me and two kids to not bump into others. Whew. The sense of community here is strong, there are fun classes and events for those interested to participate. There is a bulletin board too for everyone to communicate and managers/staff would actually respond. You can also find belay buddies to practice together. If you want to take a break from climbing, there are also cardio and strength training equipment, and a ping pong table to switch it up. Overall I'm happy my husband introduced Mesa Rim to us and I might even become a member myself. read more

I just checked this gym out as a "founding member" and was amazed! The staff is super friendly. They've put in a lot of passion and effort to create a gym for everyone, and I cannot wait for all of the public to see it on March 7th! About the space - the hours are extensive: Monday-Friday from 6am to 11pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 9pm. What does the gym have? Bouldering, Rope Climbing, a workout space with diverse equipment (treadmills, rowers, bikes, free weights), sauna, two tables upstairs to work out of, free wifi, yoga and fitness classes. Mesa is the best climbing gym in Austin hands-down. I've been to both ABP's and Crux, and although they have a variety of routes, Mesa easily beats the competition. For one, Mesa is usually much less crowded, even at peak times. The facility is larger and cleaner, and there's more to do. You can top-rope, lead climb, boulder, or even play ping pong. There's a gym and a sauna to enjoy as well. The air is actually breathable, and the space isn't incredibly dense. You don't have to wait in lines of 4-5 people to get on a route. Definitely recommend coming here! read more

I was a long time Austin climber until I moved to Vegas to work as a climbing guide in Red Rock, and I love every minute of my time I spend in Mesa when I visit. I love stepping into the gym greeted by big, friendly smiles, a staff that is engaged and take pride in what they do, a facility that is always clean and organized. As a climber of 30 years, I've been around many climbing gyms, both teaching movements and technical systems and setting routes, and I know how much thought goes into great routes. I can't tell you how much I appreciate that the harder routes are a great combination of technical, powerful and creative. Anybody can set hard routes that are dumb but the setting at Mesa Rim is thoughtful, skill building, and safe, which is what I believe a gym route should strive to be. I find the easier grades to be well set, introducing new techniques in accessible sequences. As an aging climber always mindful of injuries, I find Mesa Rim to be an amazing training ground for all. I was surprised to see a couple of negative reviews. Yes, they are systematic and strict in their belay test. But when we hold our friends and fellow climbers' lives in our hands as belayers, I would take strict over lenient any day. These tests are given to make sure everyone passes on a minimum safety standard. Experienced climbers may be able to check a bowline for correctness but newer climbers may not... there is a reason why the AMGA expects us to use the Figure 8 when guiding: easy to check, less room for error, increased safety. In a culture where we are seeing more people enter this sport, let's celebrate gyms that take risk mitigation seriously. read more

This gym is awesome, as are the staff! I'm not a big climber, but I have been to a few of the other local climbing gyms, and Mesa Rim is defiinitely my favorite. It very spacious, which is needed with how popular climbing is in Austin. There are tons of options for top rope (as well as lead climbing) and a a decent sized bouldering area too. The routes are plentiful and the higher graded routes are slightly more challenging here than I have seen in other gyms. One of my favorite parts about my visit to Mesa Rim was the interaction we had with K.C, who I believe was the manager. They made my group feel like we had been members of this gym for years, and we just felt so welcomed! I would recommend Mesa Rim to anyone and everyone looking for a good climbing gym in Austin! read more

Not a huge climber myself, but I really loved the way this gym was laid out. They have the top rope on the bottom floor with the gym and locker rooms and the bouldering upstairs. Everything feels very new and modern. They have yoga classes and a community board which is nice. When my group went around 9, it wasn't overly crowded and we were always able to find routes to climb. From what I saw there were only VB-V8, but I'm sure they are building more difficult routes. My group pretty much just did V3s and below, though. Would definitely recommend since it's not too much more expensive than ABP monthly for a student. read more

Worst gym experience ever. If you're an experienced climber and want to be able to rope climb be prepared to be told that your belay set up and method is not allowed. I'm a very proficient belayer; route developers have asked me to catch them on FAs because they trust me to catch them no matter what (even with rock raining down). I prefer not to use a belay loop but instead put my locking biner through my harness. This keeps my belay device right where I want it instead of flopping around further away from me. Not allowed here! I use the classic pinch, lower and lock belay style. Not allowed here (even though it's way faster and more efficient than what they insisted I do). And of course only a figure 8 follow through is allowed for your knot (I climb on a bowline, as do most of my partners). I can tolerate climbing on an 8 (until I start falling and it gets too tight to take out) but then being condescendingly asked how I check my 8 was annoying, and by the third "not allowed here" I hit my tolerance limit, asked for my money back. Tester dude had the nerve to tell me that if we were climbing outside he'd "let" me do it my way. If we were climbing outside he'd have no say! Having a little power trip there? The dude testing me told me I couldn't get my money but fortunately the girl at the desk understood and refunded me. That was the only good thing about my visit to Mesa Rim. I have belay tested in quite a few gyms without any issues. Not here! It was also really noisy, despite there not being many people there, since the music echoes everywhere. I could barely hear the person standing next to me when we were touring the climbing area. read more

Not very welcoming to newbies/poc/larger bodies. Just go to Austin bouldering project, you'll be more comfortable there. Employees weren't approachable. TLDR: Fantastic route setting + tall walls = fun sport climbing! I'm an experienced climber. Had no trouble getting top-rope certified within minutes of arriving and was able to schedule a lead test for an hour later. All testing expectations were standard, and staff was friendly and fair. The setting is the highlight here! Thoughtful, creative routes. Pretty consistent across letter grades, too, which is unusual IME in gyms; maybe the voting system helps with that? This is my favorite climbing gym in Austin! Challenging boulders and the routesetting on the lead walls is super creative. The tall walls really build your endurance and the fitness area is quiet, clean, and has good equipment. My only real downside is that there's blood on so many walls and holds. I've come across lots of dried blood abut also fresh wet blood too. Hard to avoid bleeding when the holds are so new, but my suggestion would be to clean off any blood every time a section of the wall is reset. Just kinda gross. read more
