This business is fantastic. Brought in a typewriter from around 1960 which I purchased at a thrift shop. Thought it might need a tune up and a new ribbon. He looked it over, tested the keys and other functions and said all it needed was a new ribbon. He mentioned that the new ribbons were on plastic wheels, but mine still had the metal wheels, so he transferred the new ribbon onto the existing metal wheels. Cost me about $10 for the visit. Wow! I was visiting a friend in Scottsdale and dropped in there a couple of years ago. I was impressed with the selection and the fact they still offered them. Their repair possibilities is a real plus. I so pleased to find this reputable typewriter repair place. I purchased my vintage Royal #10 about 15 years ago and I held off getting it cleaned and serviced all these years because I didn't feel confident in taking it to just any typewriter repair shop. Reading the reviews on Yelp about Mesa Typewriter Exchange was enough to prompt me to make the drive and take my vintage Royal in and meet with the owner. Within a few minutes of chatting I knew that I had finally found the place to service my beloved typewriter. They are very professional, asked me questions about my typewriter and offered advice such as making sure that I keep my original type ribbon spools. Mesa Exchange showed a real interest in my typewriter. It took about 5 weeks for the turn around but I am so pleased and will only take my vintage Royal typewriter to Mesa Exchange. Bill refurbished my Royal Empress after it had languished in my garage for years. It now works as I remember it did during my college days. You don't have a lot of alternatives in this department, so thank the heavens that only viable typewriter repair shop around is stocked with a lot of fascinating machines, a lot of history, and a sagacious store-owner who seems to know his way around any writing machine you put in front of him. Let me start by first expressing my amazement that there are, as of now, no Yelp reviews for such a unique place. How can it be that this hidden gem of a store has evaded exposure? My guess would be that, after visiting, its clientele chooses never again to type on a boring old laptop. That being said, I'm the sort of person who is petrified of venturing into niche shops - including, but not limited to: cobblers, tailors and violin stores - for fear that my absolute lack of knowledge on the subject will be cripplingly obvious. But, with a troublesome typewriter and less than 24 hours before Valentine's Day, I overcame this fear and called up Mesa Typewriter Exchange. One of the benefits of these labor-of-love sort of stores is the unparalleled customer service, and Bill was no exception. He offered to meet me at the store at 7 PM, well past normal business hours, and when I showed up he was cheerful and excited to see my machine. Bill is a contagious mix of enthusiastic, knowledgeable, patient and unpretentious. Within a matter of minutes he had replaced the ribbon and had my typewriter working as good as new. The shop itself is overflowing with typewriters of all sorts and sizes, from all decades and in all conditions. The fact that someplace like this exists, undiscovered, in the heart of downtown Mesa is a modern miracle, and anyone and everyone within 30 miles of this place should, at the very least, stop in for a look around, if not to fall in love with a typewriter of their very own. read more

Um this place is amazing. As my never-ending love affair with outdated technology continues, it's becoming increasingly difficult to find anyone that can repair them. I've had my typewriter for about seven years and finally decided to get a new ribbon. I called in and the owner was very helpful. The replacement was only about $9 and he changed it out for me. He even fixed a key that hadn't worked for who knows how long. The owner definitely loves his job and it shows. He showed me about five typewriters and had me test each one out and I could feel his enthusiasm. Apparently he's been doing this for about forty years. Truly amazing, this is what local business is about. Even though it's a bit of a drive from downtown, I will gladly make the trip. read more

By the way, if you bring in your typewriter with you,Bill will put in your ribbon for you(it's quite difficult sometimes). Stopped into Mesa Typewriter Exchange when I randomly got a typewriter (my first) while visiting Gilbert over the summer. I gave Bill a call to inquire about getting it checked up as I know nothing about typewrites but heard they need to be taken in occasionally. I'm from Idaho and there isn't a single typewriter store there so it was amazing for Bill to let me stop on by the next day. He took a look at my "new" smith-corona sterling and explained to me all the keys and settings on it since I really didn't know much. He shared quite a bit of knowledge with me that definitely helped my typewriter journey. He said my machine was in great shape and really didn't need anything! It was really nice for him to take time to help me and give it a check up before I had to head back home a few days later. It's been just about a month since I got that typewriter and I already got typewriter #2. I will definitely bring it down over the holidays just for Bill to help out with a bit of troubleshooting. One of my favorite little shops. I have purchased three typewriters from this Exchange and had one typewriter​, which I purchased in a different state, repaired here. All of those experiences were fantastic. The owner is informative and extremely helpful. I go in blind most of the time, not sure if I am going to buy another typewriter or not. The owner shows me what's available, but never tries to sell me on something. He gives me time and space to see if the machine is right for me. Very very nice/wide selection of typewriters. Such a nice guy who runs the place, almost couldn't believe that it's been open for more then 60 years. (Might be 80, bad memory). I bought an typewriter for my daughter for Xmas this year, first thing on her list to Santa. While I was cleaning it up I had a problem. Not knowing what to do at this point I went to google and amazingly I found Mesa Typewriter Exchange. I took the machine in immediately and explained this was a Xmas gift from Santa and I really needed it before the 24th which gave him only a week. The day after I dropped it off he called me and let me know it was all ready to go. What a lifesaver! I picked it up the next day and the final bill was less than the estimate since it was an easier fix than he thought it would be.
