I had some really bad luck in LA since moving from Northern Cali with hair salons/stylists not knowing how to deal with my long, curly hair. They would flat iron it but it wouldn't come out bone straight or because I had so much hair, they would need 3-4 hours and 3 women working on my head. Unnecessary. So I found this salon on Yelp and made an appointment to see Fallon. I told her I wanted a flatiron and a trim. She washed my hair with some great products and she was very easy to talk to. We had great conversation. When she blew my hair out, we discussed my trim. I gave her minimal instruction. I told her I wanted a trim and didn't want layers, but something that would keep my length and give my hair some pizzazz. She knew EXACTLY what I wanted. When she turned the chair around I was a completely different person. It was PERFECTION! This salon is the best in LA! I would recommend any and everyone to go. I just moved to LA a couple of months ago, and was looking for a salon (for african american hair) to go to. After reading though the reviews of Mesch and other salons here on Yelp, I knew I should go. My hair was in a definite need of care! Mesch is such an inviting place. You wouldn't really know from the outside, since it's in such a small plaza, but it's a place I would enjoy coming to all the time. The inside looks nice, with nice touches with the design. It wasn't too busy (especially for a Saturday), and Marguerite got through 4 clients including myself in a timely manner. I didn't feel uncomfortable (as I've felt at some other salons I've been to in the past); it was a great feeling being there - the aura was refreshing. Everything from the wash, the blow dry, the trim, and the curl - she was very careful, and did everything with ease. She also recommended me some products to use. I wasn't using sulfate free products before, and it was causing a lot of my hair to fall out :( So I'm really looking forward to healthier hair with the new products. All the women are fun and professional! They actually know how to do black hair. It's a one stop shop for extensions, wash & set, wig installations, braids, protective styling, or just a flat iron. The Drybar was a nice salon with the big screen movie and champagne, but the stylist that said she could do "black hair", was so afraid to dig into my roots...my style didn't last a day. I wrote a review in November, the owner asked me twice to take it down with lengthy messages. The reason being, the hair stylist who messed up my hair is no longer with the salon and was a contract stylist (aren't they all?). Fine. I took it down and put it on that stylist's Yelp page. However, I never received a response from the owner after I took it down. 4-5 months after my hair got screwed up, I feel like I need to write an updated review because the salon should take some responsibility for their stylists. Not to mention, the other stylists I saw had no technique. I'm sure I'm not the only one to get their hair messed up here. In a nutshell, the stylist put PERM solution in my hair and not keratin. I had to chop my hair and it still feels like straw. Completely ruined my hair for the next couple of years. Not sure if the stylist brought her own solution or if it was stocked at the salon. Either way, it shouldn't have happened. I regret taking down my review, especially for someone disrespectful enough not to answer the message I sent her - after she bugged me. read more

Went here for a wash and braid up (simple beehive pattern so I could wear a wig and give my hair a break from weaves). Cannot remember the stylist's name but she was newer to the salon. I was told over the phone it would be $60. When she finished she ups the price to $90! I tell her flat out I brought $70, the price she quote plus $10 tip. She "recalculates" and now the price is suddenly $70...um ok. Seems kinda sketchy but I didn't sweat it. Easier to find location, has a parking lot, open, airy, everyone was friendly. I was in LA for the weekend for a birthday party. Of course being me, I needed to make sure I looked fabulous especially if I wanted to get the attention of a certain someone I had my eye on! Due to the time crunch I didn't have time to do it on my own, so a friend of mine recommended I go see Lauren at Mesch. This was my first time going to her and I was a little nervous like I always do when my hair goes on a blind date with a new stylist, but my friend reassured me that she's been in the business awhile now and she knows what she's doing. I went to Mesch Hair Studio and from the moment I walked in I had great experience. Everyone was super friendly. Lauren introduced me to the rest of the staff there which made me feel welcomed during my appointment. Lauren did a deep conditioning treatment and trim and turned my broken locks into brand new hair! My hair was so fried from bleaching it and then dying it dark and then going back to blond. After she brought my hair back to life she got to work and started styling my it. My hair turned out great and it was one less thing I had to worry about before going out. Lauren did a great job and I would recommend her to anyone!! As far as the comment goes about the type of service you get based on your ethnicity (which can make someone a little skeptical of trying this place) is far from the truth. I'm Asian and Spanish and I got excellent customer service. The Mesch Hair Studio is a cute, quaint and comfortable salon. Marguerite is wonderful! I've been looking for a great place for African-American hair since I relocated to North Hollywood and hadn't had any luck until I found her. I've had her relax and style my hair four times now and am very happy with the growth and condition of it. She's very sociable and all her clients seem to love her. She's great a timing her appointments so wait times are minimal to none. She's very flexible and doesn't let you down when you give her the creative reigns. First let me just say I love Mesch! When I first started going there my hair was not that healthy and would not grow. My hair is beyond soft and is growing like a weed. Marguerite (Owner) will hook you up. She is very knowledgeable about ethnic hair and how to keep it healthy and make it grow. Some places won't tell you what they use on your hair or how to get a certain look at home. Marguerite does. Go to the website to check out the prices. They do not change due to hair type they are what they are. For those of you from the East Coast like me you will have to just get over the price shock. She is very reasonable for Cali. You get what you pay for. Don't go somewhere because it's cheap then two months later your hair is on the bathroom floor instead of on your head. It's worth every dime, you will love the results. As a black woman it's hard to find places that cater to our divers hair types and needs. We will go shopping around to different shops for months looking for the right spot. Well ladies! This is it!
