Food was OK. A little on the pricey side especially with what you get. No complimentary bread, chips or even water like other restaurants around there. You figure, all we do in Guanajuato is walk, might as well give your customers complimentary water to feel welcomed. What ruined it for me was the staff. I've been in Mexico for 7 weeks and this has been the best meal I've had so far. The 'filete con pesto du cilantro, chile morita y cacahuate' was the most tender and flavorful cut of beef. The seasoning was exceptional and the beef devine. We also enjoyed the blueberry almond cake and its delicate presentation. We will most certainly come back and I suggest you don't miss this restaurant when visiting Guanajuato. read more

We are used to Mexican food, living right across the border from Tijuana. We have some experience with margaritas, and good ones are not everywhere. Great food and atmosphere. Great margaritas, and service. I had the steak with blue cheese sauce. It was, well, great. Everything was a fair price, and there was nothing we tried that could be better. Even for vegetarians, there were options. This is a nice place just off the main drag. As much as I like tacos and burritos, its nice to have a change of pace! All that said, I hate to bring more people here because it is nice and low key right now, with no wait. So dont y'all go there and make it crowded! Alfonzo and Lilian took great care of us! Mestizo was a food highlight for my husband and I while visiting Guanajuato. We liked it so much we returned for a second time, and we considered going back for a third on our last evening in town (but unfortunately, my husband became ill and we weren't able to). My favorite dishes were the ceviche, of which we were served a generous portion, and the corn-zucchini-tomato dip which was served with bread (the complimentary offering served at the beginning of our meal)! The ambiance here was quiet and romantic, yet casual enough where we felt comfortable dressed in our travel clothing. I highly recommend this foodie gem in Guanajuato! read more

We had dinner here for new year eve. The food was good and the service was wonderful. The waiter didn't speak English so the waitress was there all the time help to translate. They were both very patient and gentle. The place is quite, not the very center of the town, but that is just the right atmosphere we were looking. I will come again for sure for my next visit. A little tip, reverse ahead, otherwise it would be very unlikely you could be seated on the same day. read more

Decadent. The tuna appetizer was my favorite but the steak with grilled onions and goat cheese was a close second. My entree was an orange glazed salmon and it was a perfect cut and preparation. The sauce was a bit sweet but the rosemary and potatoes balanced it out well. I didn't especially like our dessert but my wife loved the chocolate cake with fruit compote. It was too dry and not sweet enough for my taste. Overall a good experience, we had the restaurant to ourselves as the rain was pouring outside. So romantic and rustic, with all of the technique and elegance of a world class restaurant. If you are in guanajuato definitely check it out and go to the Diego Rivera museum, too. read more

Overrated. We had high hope for this restaurant. Trying to hard to be highend but fell short. Food was not memorable. All I remember was that the tortilla soup was the best of the dishes we ordered. Loved this place, it is located on the second floor and is a tiny and intimate space that is very tastefully decorated. The menu is simple and they do have specials and the dishes while traditional are very well executed and are sure to please. We were in town for 2 nights only and are very glad we chose this place. Honestly I don't understand how this place got such a high rate. The price was the high compared to other restaurants in Guanajuato, but the taste was the worst. We got steaks and octopuses as our main entrees and they were unreasonably salty!! The amount of salt the chief put in the food is way too much. If you expect decent food, don't come here. The environment was ok and the waitress spoke English. I guess that's one of the few good things about this place. read more

Happy accident bumping into this place. In the spirit of nouveau Mexican, great spins and twists on traditional Mexican flavors or dishes, just like the name suggests. The ceviche was great - a nice combination and balance of flavors, including serrano and papaya. The filete was also very nice. The pasta with jamon serrano was fine, but not as good as the other two dishes. What stood out was the quality of the ingredients. If you're from the US, try the steak. If possible, eat in the salon facing the street for the sights and sounds of downtown Guanajuato and the color of Mexico. read more

I really loved the appetizer, their house specialty......i forgot the name but it had chorizo, tamatillos and goat cheese.....it had mild spiceness from the chorizo, some tartness from the tomatillo and semi sweetness from the goat cheese...the combination was great, had to order it twice.....I had soup, which was OK...my wife enjoyed the salmond pasta. I ate with my family and I ordered a plate of BB ribs and a Tuna fish taco... omg!! I got vomiting and diarrea 2/12 hours after eating. I got so sick ( strong bacteria) I was put under IV and antibiotics for the next 14 hours. I'm still very sick ( liquid diarrea) It was so sad that I missed all the fun since I got to Guanajuato. please do not eat Pork ribs, fish, or any vegetable. They are all contaminated with a very strong bacterias. This restaurant doesn't have any AC. Temperature is very important for food conservation and consumption. They only have a little air fan in case you're hot. I don't appreciate you guys ruined my family vacations!! It has been 8 days and my daughter and I still sick. The rest of the family are doing better. If I knew this, I would never eat there. Be careful. read more

We were really hoping for a much better dining experience than we had. The ambience is artsy, low key and attractive. The service was o.k.. But the food, the most important element, failed to meet our expectations. The ceviche appetizer was very good. My wife's grilled salmon fillet was just passable, but nothing special.. But my New York steak was very poor quality. The meat should have been trimmed more closely of fat and gristle. While it was cooked perfectly to the desired doneness, that could not overcome the fact that it was tough and juiceless, an inferior cut of beef. The wine list is recited, with very few options. Similarly, only two desserts were offered; a chocolate mousse and a chocolate cake. From reading reviews of Mestizo here on Yelp and other sites, we were expecting a fantastic meal. But with the exception of the ceviche, the food did not please us. In my opinion, it is overpriced for the quality of food served. read more

We had lunch (comida) here yesterday, and were underwhelmed. My pasta with salmon, asparagus and basil entree was nicely cooked but light on asparagus, basil and flavor. My wife had salmon with vegetables--she had a similar evaluation, eating all the vegetables and leaving most of the salmon. My brother-in-law observed it wasn't real smart of us to order salmon the day after the big Dia de lost Muertos weekend, as it had probably arrived at the restaurant 4 days earlier. Good point. A beef steak with tarragon potatoes, was decent; a chile relleno picadillo entree left my B-i-L dissatisfied. The service was very slow, and we had to get up and buttonhole the waiter to get our check. All in all, not a great day for El Mestizo in our opinion. read more
