A smaller operation than Key Food/Superfresh or Foodtown. Basically vin ordinaire with a small nod to upscale products. Problems include: 1) VERY narrow aisles 2) produce, esp sale items, not good 3) "bakery" dept a joke 4) has become pricey 5) advertised specials often not in stock 6) advertised prices not rung up at registers- be VERY careful The spanish stockboys are very helpful but cashiers can sometimes be unfriendly (they is a high turnover?) and the managers are often indifferent or annoyed with comp[laints or problems. I love coming to this supermarket, they have everything I ever looked for and never once left not finding what I needed. The produce is always fresh and crisp and love their cheese selections. Family owned and operated which is always a plus. Love the fact that they have their employees asking if you found everything you're looking for, that says a lot of how they feel about their business. One of the better looking supermarkets in the area. Despite the area, everything was clean and neatly stocked. It shows management cares about the appearance of the place. Outside was brightly lit during the evening and it looked inviting. Had a good purchasing experience here with no hassle. Staff seemed to be happy working there as well. read more

Fresh food, great service, all registers always manned, clean environment, would recommend!

Overpriced, understocked, disorganized, expired items, and the radio plays static. I don't expect much from a local grocery store. I don't need gourmet items. If you don't carry something I want, that's cool -- I don't need to be especially catered to. If you want to carry organic quinoa, hey, that's awesome, but there's no reason to charge $8/pound for it. I'm fine without the quinoa, really, but I've bought dairy products that turned out to be expired. (Yeah, I do usually check expiration dates, but come on! Share some of the work of that with me?). Sometimes the cardboard containers for dry goods have water damage. I want to like you, local Met Food, but lately it feels like you're trying to make me think I'm losing my mind. First off- CHECK THE DATES ON EVERYTHING. I've picked up so many expired packages of vegetables and dairy here (gross). I once bought a carton of cottage cheese that was TWO WEEKS past its expiration. I brought it back as soon as I noticed and the manager gave me a replacement. He said he would talk to "the dairy guy," but that was months ago and I spot expired dairy nearly every time I'm there. Also, thoroughly check your produce before you buy it. There are always a ton of fruit flies around the produce section and some really nasty looking produce. Just the other day I bought what seemed like a safe, ripe carton of strawberries. I opened it this morning and had to throw nearly 2/3rds of the strawberries out because of mold. It couldn't be seen from the outside of the carton- open those babies up and poke around. Secondly- everything here is so expensive. It's hard to find an affordable grocery store with all of the necessities in this neighborhood, but this store doesn't even come close. Why is a small container of nuts $5.99? Why do berries sometimes cost $6.99 for small carton? Why is yogurt $7.99 for a large container? These things should be half the price they sell them for. They have to realize that no one will pay those prices. That's probably why so much expired food is on the shelves. And third- the people who work here are just strange. I once saw two managers, who I'm pretty sure are brothers, get in a fight. I'm talking all out fist fight brawl that left one bleeding from the face. Customers were screaming at them to stop. I thought they were going to kill each other. I get that everyone has issues, but having a fist fight in front of your customers is just too far. Also- make sure to mentally keep track of sales and check that they ring up at the register. They often don't, but the cashiers will correct it if you speak up. read more

DO NOT SHOP HERE! I have been a patron of this supermarket for years and while the cashiers are very pleasant the owners have been arrogant. There have been many times that I have found expired goods on the shelf and (I only looked out for them because of the hassle the owners gave me when I attempted to return a bottle of mayo that was a year pass the expiration date). I have continued to shop out of convince and knowing I would have to do quality control checks myself. But after viewing the now viral video I am disgusted having given this supermarket any money in the past. The owner even tried to defend his behavior during the incident by saying he has done a lot for the community. I have lived in this community for over 20 years and if he considers selling expired goods, not making changes or renovations to the supermarket while the black West Indian community were its only patrons doing a lot for the community then he is confused and more arrogant than he appeared before. I hope they sell to new owners because the staff (who I mentioned are usually very nice and pleasant) should not have to suffer do to the owners poor actions and choices read more

This place has a really bad odor, and the prices advertised usually don't ring up. But if you can prove the price, the sale prices are pretty good and they get 3 stars for being in the neighborhood. That said, if I'm after convenience, I'd rather go across the street to the bodega- the produce seems fresher, owners/staff are friendlier, and there's no terrible odor. read more

Meh, I mean Met...It's a grocery store. It's the closest "big" grocery store to my new apartment. It's alright I guess, I got spoiled by a great big Key Foods while living in Greenpoint. The produce looks fresh enough, which is more than I can say for a lot of grocery stores in the city. I wasn't too impressed with the frozen foods section which unfortunately tends to be the bulk of my groceries. Let's just say I'll go here if I need to but I think I'll rely on Fresh Direct as much as I can. read more

Came here once and will not come back, I guess I will stay with Western Beef which is not really a choice... I found a pack a meat that was past it's date of freshness and that is all I needed. Just went in to grab some eggs the other morning. It looked like they had a nice selection of groceries but as I was looking for the eggs I saw a group of workers working on cleaning out the inside one of the refrigerated sections, I think it was where the meat usually is because there was still some meat on the shelf next to it. There was a large amount of crap in the bottom of it. Not sure what it was but it was not pretty, there shouldn't be large amounts of dirt and who knows what else around food, especially meat, just gross. I've lived in this area for decades. Most of the cashiers are RUDE!! The food selection is limited. I've asked them to order items and they NEVER do. You also should pay attention to the prices you are charged. The items have one price on the shelf and a higher price at the check out. I ONLY shop here as a LAST resort!!!!!! read more

I like it. It had all the essentials, had some organic vegetables/fruits and it's literally steps away from where i live. This Met food has always had fresh meat and produce, but over the past 6 years or so it has definitely upgraded itself from a somewhat run-down store featuring cheap products to a supermarket that does a good job of appealing to the older area residents while stocking some upscale products to appeal to the newcomers. The upgraded beer selection is especially worthy of praise. There was a long long time when the best beer you could get in this area was Red Stripe. Now this Met is not the only place that carries a craft beer selection of brews like Magic Hat and Pork Slap, but it is convenient and prices are reasonable. They also have a small but fine deli section that carries Boar's Head products. read more

I honestly really like this grocery store. They have $1 Secret deodorants right by the checkout, which is so nice (especially during the summer). The cashiers are also pretty friendly; they always joke around with me. The prices on basic items here cost quite a bit more than at the Key foods 2 blocks away. Things even cost more than other Met Foods in more affluent neighborhoods. The costs add up, but the products aren't even really good quality. This place has notes and signs inside advertising to people on WIC and food stamps, so it's pretty unethical to be charging 50 cents to several dollars more on everything from milk to cereal to canned foods when half of your customers either don't know better or can't afford the added cost. I was also in there yesterday and found quite a few expired things on the shelves. It's true what others are saying that their "sales" never ring up at the register, so you get home and realize you didn't get the advertised price and spent a bunch of extra money, but it's too late to go back and have them refund you. It's happened so often that I can no longer write it off as a mistake. It's just deceptive. They also close way early on Sunday, have a pretty steep minimum on debit and credit cards, and their door doesn't work!
