David styled my granddaughter's long straight hair for tonight's prom. Before he started, she showed him a photo of how she wanted her hair to look and told him that it's difficult for curls to last in her hair, especially when it's humid (as it is today after all the recent rain). His treatment was just hair spray, curling iron, and more hair spray. She is very disappointed. The curls were already relaxing by noon just one hour after styling. He did not use any texturizing spray or mousse, and did not pin the curls. What he did for her in the salon, we could have done for her at home. I recommended this salon to her based on Yelp reviews, so I am disappointed that this had to be her very first professional salon experience. I love this salon! And if you go you have to get your hair done by Donald. I have been getting my hair highlighted for about 6 years now and he's by far the best. He always does the job perfectly per what I asked for and sometimes even better than what I was imagining! I've never had a bad experience here and trust me I have had them in the past! Bottom line: Do NOT get your hair done by owner Mark Traub at this salon! I should have heeded the bad Yelp reviews I read about this salon before I went but a friend had recommended him so I gave him my business. However, there are plenty of great hairdressers in Austin who understand the importance and value of customer service and respecting clients and their time far better than the folks at Meta. I just had to fire owner Mark after all the grief he gave me a couple of weeks ago. First, he scheduled me for a haircut only (I've ALWAYS done a combo cut AND color) and was almost an hour late for my 1st scheduled appt. He didn't apologize for wasting my time, just offered to let me come back one week later for color. How inconvenient. I should have blown him off then, but I came back a second time for color because my roots were bad and I had a party to go to. At my 2nd hair appointment in one wk, Mark asked me to blow dry my own hair while he colored another client's hair (WTH?? - I've NEVER had that happen at any other salon). He also took a cigarette break without even bothering to wash his hands just prior to styling my hair (can you say, "Cigs REEK?"). Then he charged me $35 MORE than his usual rate I've always paid for a cut/color. This was truly a surreal ongoing series of bad experiences I shall NOT repeat. I've been seeing Mark for nearly 5 years. He's the type of experienced stylist that just knows how to make you look your best. You won't get a super trendy yet unflattering high-fashion cut here; nor will he give you something old-fashioned- you'll just look beautiful. He doesn't need a lot of direction. And the price is righteous. His shop is not snooty or upscale, there's not an overdressed receptionist and a giant wall of retail products to push at you. He's kind and entertaining. Don't get Abby unless you just need a cut. She messed up my highlight; used way too much bleach but still managed to leave orange and yellow patches. She also bleached over the already bleached part instead of just doing the roots. So my hair is straw and tangles so much I can't comb through it. I did however like my haircut. The next week when I went in (for a scheduled appointment) to try and fix the color, she got frustrated with me, refused to fix my hair. She told me she would never do my hair again, grabbed her purse, stormed out and slammed the door. The manager then tried to fix the orange. Really bad experience. Now, a few weeks later, I am going to someone who has done my hair in the past to get the bleached part cut off. Yes, I have to get my hair layered which I really didn't want to do. An extra $40 to attempt to fix Abby's work. And have spent $100 bucks on conditioners, so, the money I saved by going to Abby has more than gone down the drain. Sorry to write a bad review, especially about an individual, but in my entire life, she was the rudest and that's a fact. P.S. I am so happy with my hair! I moved to Austin a few days ago and I am a blonde so I needed to touchup my roots. Went to a first place which darkened my roots instead of making them lighter and I had to go in the next week for her to fix it. The second place I went tried to fix that with an Ash color which made me look like grey-green hair and finally I found Donald Trub!! He color corrected my hair and fixed it back to that original golden blonde I had before. He also eliminated from my hair a visible line that was caused by the first salon in the middle of my head! He took the time to carefully watch the hair develop the color and make sure that it wasn't over processing. He was attentive and explained every process in a clear concise way which I could understand what he was doing and made me feel confident in the process. He also made sure that my hair was washed and conditioned properly so that my hair didn't come up rough after all the correction process. I love the end result and am so relieved I finally found my stylist. Next day at work, the girls were raving about the color and it made me feel prettier and sexier than ever! To start with, I am a terrible customer because I don't get my hair cut enough. Then, when I want it cut, I want it NOW. Also, I don't care all that much being generally of the opinion that it will grow back--it's hair, right?! This has led me to jump around to different salons and hair dressers over the last 15 years I've lived in Austin. This brings me to Mark. There's a specific look/cut I was trying for. Let's call it a Sigourney Weaver cut. I went and saw Mark. He was entertaining, professional, AND he gave me his version of my Sigourney look, which was way better than I went in hoping for. So, Mark gets me. I have now been a return customer several times and will continue to see Mark. I have been going to Metamorphsis Hair co since 1997 and consistently with Mark Trub. I feel blessed every time my crowing glory comes out looking like a million bucks that we have geniuses like Mike amongst us! I don't easily get impressed but almost 19 years later I got to give credit where credit is due. He has over 40 years of experience, yet he is so unpretentious and absolutely easy going. His sense of humor and caring nature makes it a truly unique, one of a kind place. Mark understands hair like his own breathe. I have curly hair, that's unwieldy at times and I refuse to use any hair products other than shampoo, conditioner wash and go-not even hair dryer. Enough to test anyone's patience! But Mark has patiently come up with little tips and tricks I can do to get the look I want without too much fuss-and continues to advise me with patience even after 19 years. Plus he knows exactly how to cut, and highlight my hair. I enjoy seeing his talented fingers work on hair like an artist on a canvas! The whole Salon while run by amazing hair professionals, has a down-to-earth, warm family feel to it. I sometimes go in after a hard day, or a difficult week. I have been a customer of Mark Trub, the owner of Metamorphosis, for over 30 years. I started going to him at the recommendation of a friend and have never stopped. I don't think I've gotten a bad haircut once in all that time. He also colors my hair and does an excellent job with color. He is very knowledgeable, always gives me good advice on what styles would work best for my hair type, and stays up to date with the latest trends in hair styling and care. He has a loyal customer base and many times when my schedule didn't allow me to come in during "normal" hours, he has agreed to see me in the evening (something I don't imagine you can find many hairdressers willing to do). Although his shop has a Westlake location, it is welcoming and the staff make you feel at home and, unlike other salons, there are no high pressure sales pitches to get you to buy the products they use. I've compared Metamorphosis prices to other Austin salons and find them to be reasonable. I've recommended Mark and his shop over the years to many of my friends who now go there (as well as some of their spouses). My husband also goes there---he has naturally curly hair and has always had a problem finding a stylist who knows how to cut it. I would highly recommend Mark and the staff at Metamorphosis--give them a try!!! read more

I got my hair cut and colored by Virginia Smith: If it was possible to give negative stars I would. This is by far the worst experience I have ever had at a hair salon. I went into the hair salon asking for subtle golden blond highlight, and asked for potentially a bit of an ombre effect on the bottom (even showed pictures of exactly what I wanted using a picture that matched my natural shade). This hair dresser dramatically over foiled my hair with this light blond that looked almost white. I left the salon looking like I had taken the top of my hair and said dye it white. It is important to note I have been getting blonde highlights every year or so for 10+ years. Since asking for a simple blond highlight is typically an easy ask, I always go to different salons without incident. I am a natural red head, my color is a mix of blond, red and copper. I love my natural color, this is why I always ask for subtle. As I want something to highlight my natural color giving it more the look my hair takes in the summer, opposed to the deep red shade I get in the winter. I left the salon miserable, deciding to sleep on it hoping it would tone down in the morning. I was so unhappy I called asking that she fix it since it was nothing like I had requested. To her credit she said to come in that next day and she would. The underneath of my hair was still red, so I thought it would be fairly easy to match, asking to just get my natural red back. She was like i'm so sorry, and said girls my age usually love going blonder. That was not me and no one would want the shade she used, she even admitted she left the toner in to long getting the wrong shade. She claimed the only way to fix it was an all-over dye job, but seemed confident it would be an easy match. She new I was nervous and seemed to be taking more caution than the first time. Well I was wrong, when she uncovered my hair my glasses were off so she says its not exactly what we discussed, but I think you will like it, its edgy. She had dyed my hair this hideous unnatural looking fuchsia. I began to cry. She immediately goes I will fix it, i'm so sorry. She puts blond dye on top (I later found out from a professional hair dresser I trust that is the absolute wrong thing to do in that situation). Needless to say she did nothing, but make my hair look worse. To her credit she gave me a full refund and offered to try to fix it a third time (I declined I would not let her near my hair ever again). But given the fact it has been three months and I don't feel comfortable with my hair at all up or down because of how hideous this shade is, the money is worth nothing. All I want is my natural hair color back, I am not from Austin originally and unfortunately given how scarring this experience was i'm not willing to trust another hairdresser I don't know to fix it. I have never written a bad review ever. Not for a salon, restaurant or anything. But personally If a hair dresses can't provide subtle blond highlights without incident she has no business coloring hair until further education. I think its important others know so they don't wind up in the same situation. Though I can't speak for the other stylist, since the salon owner never called to apologize I don't think that speaks very highly of the establishment. read more

I have been going to Metamorphosis to get my hair cut for 35+ years. I first heard about Mark through a friend and when I went to him for the first time he was located in downtown Austin. When he moved to West Lake , I followed him to the new location because I liked the way he cut my hair. I now live in Cedar Park and drive all the way to West Lake.. He knows how to cut naturally curly hair and my hair is very curly; therefore , I always get a good cut. People all the time ask me who cuts my hair and I refer them to Mark ( the owner) of Metamorphosis. He is very accommodating as I can get an appointment when I want it almost all the time.
