Great experience! Our main circuit breaker died at 11pm on a Tuesday. It's an old house with an ancient 100 amp breaker box. Called Metcalf in the morning based on an earlier great experience and Kurt came out in the morning to look at it and give me a quote. He worked hard to save me money by trying to replace just the faulty main breaker (which was buzzing and sparking!), but they haven't made this model since 1943 and a whole panel replacement was necessary. The SMUD tech had suggested the same when they were there the night before. Kurt was able to expedite the permitting and replacement, and the next morning he and his crew came out. The crew was Sam and John, and my interactions with everyone could not have been better. The upgrade to a 200 amp box was done by early afternoon. I appreciate: 1. The immediate response, 2. The attempt to save me from a whole panel replacement despite how ready the house was for an upgrade, 3. The fact that Kurt appeared onsite with the crew, and when SMUD returned for the inspection, 4. How competent and friendly the crew themselves were, 5. I write this unfortunate review to try and warn others in their search for honest and skilled electrical companies. My concerns are based on: 1. Actual poor electrical work 2. Incompetent team and lack of proper oversight 3. Inappropriate interactions with Kurt, team leader 1. Poor electrical work (pictures). My colleague gave rave reviews for Norman (owner), however Kurt was in charge of the work at my house, and perhaps that is where the fault lies. There were a range of mistakes from the larger missed recessed light placement, the unsecured electrical outlet, the destruction of the wall from conduit placement, the open terminal and broken pool light (all in photos). Then there are the smaller mistakes like setting mismatching light colors, however this is a reflection of their attention to detail (photo). 2. Poor interactions with team. The pictures demonstrating the poor work is just half the story. I understand Kurt was the licensed electrician and his workers are not, however they should be properly supervised. On the first day of work, one of the young workers asked me if my air conditioning had been working and alerted me there was an error message on my smart thermostat. I went up to the thermostat, saw the error, and fixed the loose wire, which likely came loose when they were attempting to run wire down the wall (which they failed at). I was a little unsettled by the fact that I, a person not working for an electrical company, had to teach the electrical worker how to fix the thermostat (which they install btw). This lack of problem solving capabilities also likely explains the unnecessary hole they made in the ceiling when attempting to place the recessed light that same day. And that is only one story of many. 3. Inappropriate interactions with Kurt. I understand that we all make mistakes, but it is the way he responded to these mistakes that was troubling. After approaching Kurt regarding my concerns about the unnecessary holes in the wall, the fact that our pool light was not working (despite it working prior to his work), the fact that he did work that was not originally agreed on (he placed recessed lights in an area we did not agree on, he changed out a pool light switch when the only issue was that the breaker on the panel just had to be replaced since it wasn't tripping), he became angry and defensive. This was a red flag for me. He became angrier as I informed him I would like to have another electrician take a look at the work. Another red flag. I emailed the company with my concerns without reply. At the end of the day, I paid the more than $10,000 worth of work that was poorly completed, and found a different company, Charles Young Electric, to repair the mistakes and finish the work, who I highly recommend. Would recommend staying away from Metcalf Electric at all costs. read more

I have used this company twice recently; once for additional power outlets in the garage, and secondly a more simple job of installing two ceiling fans in my living room. The guys were punctual, professional, went out of their way to leave the site clean and tidy, and were both extremely pleasant wo work with. I haven't written a review in a long time, but today I had to break my silence to let everyone know how awesome this experience was. I was changing out an outlet in my garage when I tripped the breaker. after some initial investigation I realized that who ever wired my garage made it really confusing to troubleshoot. I've done some basic electrical before and honestly this is the first time I was like WTF and I don't mean Wed, Thu, Fri. It's always a pain to fix someone else's sloppy mess. At some point you gotta call it quits and ask for help which I did after two hours. I left a contact message on their website on Saturday and I was pleasantly surprised when Norm called me on Sunday. He worked with me over the phone to do some light troubleshooting and then came out to my house. He confirmed my frustration with how messed up the wiring was and basically wired 3 single gang outlets a porcelain light and 2 light switches because the easiest way to fix it was to rip out the existing mess and do it right. The whole time he communicated with me what he was doing. As a homeowner that's top notch customer service. The whole time I felt like he was a good friend trying to help me opposed to a contractor trying to add line items to my bill. I also had some issues with all the lights flickering in my house and he recommend that I start by calling smud and get the weather head checked. I did that the next day. Smud came out and fixed it for free and the flickering was gone. I can't tell you how grateful I am that I met this guy. He's got a lot of integrity and was constantly trying to save me money and gave me good solid advice. When it came to cost he was honest about approximately how much it would cost and told me up front that it was just an estimate. The electrical outlet that our dishwasher was on went out. I tried calling a few electricians, left messages and didn't get a call back. One of our neighbors recommended Metcalf Electric. They responded promptly and said that they could come out the next morning. They were there on time and were very considerate (used shoe covers, agreed to wear a mask). They did a good job of fixing the outlet, despite it being a bit more complicated than it should have been. Norman and Dave are the best. They are so good, new jobs are days out now, so plan ahead, and fix the roof while the sun is shining, as the saying goes. We purchased a home with aluminum wiring (which can be a fire hazard in certain situations if unrepaired) and as part of the purchase agreement we required that all aluminum connections in the home be repaired. Initially the sellers said they made the appropriate repairs but we discovered that this was in fact not the case. The sellers suggested hiring an independent party to inspect the wiring and make repairs if necessary; they recommended Metcalf Electric (we would later come to find out that the sellers and Metcalf had a previous relationship which involved exchanging services for reduced costs). I spoke to Norman Metcalf on the phone and he seemed like a great guy. I expressed my genuine concern about aluminum wiring because I have two small children and wanted to do whatever I could to reduce the risk of fires in the home (I work with pediatric burn victims and have seen first hand how devastating burn injuries can be). He said he empathized because of the nature of his business and that he specialized in repairing older homes with dated wiring. He said that he had inspected the wiring at the home we were purchasing and the previous repairs were not done correctly. He agreed to repair every single aluminum connection in the entire home to give us piece of mind. We modified the purchase agreement to say that all aluminum connections in the home were to be repaired by Metcalf Electric; Metcalf was then hired by the sellers to make these repairs and we were told that all repairs were completed so we proceeded with purchasing the home. The sellers then requested that we rent the home back to them for a few months so we didn't actually inspect the repairs until months later. When the sellers finally moved out we discovered that there were still multiple unrepaired aluminum connections in places that were easily accessible, including one connection that had signs of prior burning and melting. It appeared to my untrained eye that little to no attempt was made to make the repairs agreed upon. I took multiple pictures and sent the pictures to Norman Metcalf. The following are quotes from his response: "...We sincerely apologize for the undue stress and headache caused by our failure to complete the work we were asked to do. Our foreman had an incorrect notion of the scope of the work, and what constituted needing treatment. Regardless of that, it constitutes a failure on our part and we will refund you the complete contract price. This is not how we operate, and quite frankly we are highly embarrassed by this failure to perform. If there is anything else you feel we can do to make this right, we are happy to discuss it. Again, our sincerest apologies..." He then offered to reimburse us an amount which, based on my research on how much it would actually cost to do all of the repairs after talking to multiple electricians, was completely insufficient. We were in the middle of negotiating an appropriate reimbursement when I received a letter from his lawyer which in part said Metcalf would only be willing to reimburse me a "nominal fee." This letter went on to say "in closing, California is a Libel Per Se state, meaning that if it is defamatory Libel made on a public cite, an action will lie without proof of actual damages to Metcalf Electric." I interpreted this as accusing me of being a liar and as a warning not to post about my experience on social media platforms to avoid being accused of libel. My response is that truth is a complete defense to a libel claim. I attempted to deal directly with Norman Metcal and was met with a letter from his lawyer. I reported my experience to the California State License Board but the case was dismissed because I "did not have a contract with Metcalf" (the sellers of the home were technically the ones who hired him despite the fact that we had a signed purchase agreement with my name on it stating that Metcalf was to make all of the repairs). At this point it is not about the money I have spent (I ended up spending about $9,000 to rewire the entire house after this whole ordeal because I wanted to make sure my children were as protected from a home fire as possible and I did not trust any of the prior "repairs" that were done). It is about a company in Sacramento with a good reputation that did not do the work they were hired to do and then attempted to, as I see it, bully the customer into being quiet about it. If Norman Metcalf has a rebuttal to anything I have written above I welcome it; I have photographs and documentation to corroborate everything I have written in this post, in far more detail than I have written about here. I have considered pursuing litigation but at this point I am so sick of dealing with the whole situation that it may not be worth it. I hope Norman Metcalf realizes that he made a mistake and should have dealt with this situation professionally instead of trying to (in my opinion) bully his customer to save face and a few bucks. read more

Metcalf Electric replaced 2 recessed hall lights, 2 aim-able recessed lights, replaced track lighting with recessed fixtures, and finally replaced a big ugly flourescent box lighting fixture in our kitchen with recessed lighting. They did a good job that was done on time and budget, and our house looks terrific. The price was reasonable, too. I would highly recommend them to anyone. read more
