I'm a regular customer at Metcalfe's Market Hilldale and I am a disabled veteran. Because of my disability some days are better than others and I often have my groceries delivered to my door. On my last order for delivery, DoorDash was the contracted delivery service and it cost me $8.99. I did not hire Door Dash. As a matter of fact I cancelled my subscription with Door Dash for this very reason. The dashers could not follow simple delivery instructions. I called Metcalfe's who refused to take any accountability and even asked me to recommend a better delivery service and that I needed to call DoorDash and complain. And of course DoorDash stated they did not have a way to refund my delivery fee and that I would have to get it from Metcalfe's. All I can say is both companies are less than desirable. read more

This is a great grocery store for all ages and pretty handicap accessible! The store has been very clean when I go. The prices are a bit higher than your walmart or metro market typically. My only complaint is that I can't always clearly understand the organization of the store and have needed to ask for help to find products. read more

Been to their West Towne location and my first in this one. Got great variety of cheese, wine, pastries, produce and fruits. It was 7 pm and the meat/seafood area were closed which is shocking for Friday night. They got Jenni's ice cream for $9/pint and got several. Lamb chops were very pricey and got some beef short ribs instead. Found out that they carry donuts from Greenbush bakery for $6 on half a dozen, cheaper than $7.50 in store since I went there prior to Metcalfe. read more

I have been a satisfied Metcalfs customer for years, until recently. New ownership seems oblivious to the needs and desires of its customers, and focused on narrowing choices and reducing quality. The typical customer of this store is fairly well-heeled, and not interested in getting groceries for less, they want quality and variety, and name brand. it seems like more and more tried and true brands like Del Monte, Contadina, Saran Wrap etc, are being replaced by genetics like Our Family, which is OK but not what people want. I have heard many complaints from longtime customers like me. This would have been an unqualified 5 star review a year ago, but no longer. I'm fearful that the future will see a further decline in selection and quality. read more

I have been shopping at Metcalf's Midvale for years and after they changed hands I have notice a steep decline in the cleanliness, the attitudes, and the quality of the products. A lot of empty space on the shelves and less choices of brands. My guess is with the rent they pay and the competition they have, Metcalf's won't be around much longer. In all my career as a participant in the grocery business I have rarely seen a take over of a family owned grocery store improved or even maintain it's level of consumer value. Metcalfe's charges a premium for their products. I don't mind paying more for quality, but when it's accompanied by the poor quality in seafood, produce and meats that I've seen over time, I am less than enthused. They regularly have out fish that has seen better days - eyes glassed and cloudy, oxidized gills, slime on the fish itself, stinks. Not all, mind you - but NONE of the fish of that poor quality should be out. They charge a premium for the chicken "discards," backs and bones. $2.99 per pound for materials they can't use is itself gouging, but beyond that, it is cynical and disrespectful to customers to leave out stale backs as dregs. The backs were not fresh. They hadn't gone quite bad yet but they had the faint must of the beginning of spoilage and they had the tackiness, also a sign of advanced age. When making stock, I count on good, fresh raw materials to work with and this fails miserably. Beyond that, they seemingly deliberately leave on several ounces of pure fat that they conveniently tuck underneath the back, in one large clump - i.e., it's not a question of trimming, it's a question of deliberately leaving on several ounces of fat, concealed underneath. On a 1# package of backs, paying several ounces of that for unusable fat is disingenuous and I'm afraid what I've experienced more and more over time. Italian parsley, previously in large, brilliant green bunches, has kept the same price but reduced to a really small bunch, barely enough for one bouquet garni and at $2.59 per, it's a ripoff. These are just examples. It's clear they want to get the last dollar in by failing to pull bad product, and that is a terrible practice. If any other store provided more of the cook's materials locally that I need, I'd go there. Now it's a 50:50 proposition finding quality, and it will always be at a premium regardless. read more

This review is for the floral department here and the manager, Diane. We had our wedding in Madison and spent the months leading up to it trying to plan everything from LA. I've never planned anything of the sort and had no idea what I was doing, what we needed in terms of floral arrangements, or what anything was called. I was also crazy skeptical at first because let's face it... it's a flower shop in a grocery store. After getting in touch with Diane and letting her know what kind of theme we wanted to go with (based on a pre-arranged bouquet they sell), she was wonderful and super helpful, giving us different options to choose from for our arch. The prices given to us were pretty fair too. Over the course of the entire planning process, Diane always responded quickly and answered all of our questions each time we thought of something new to worry about. She was also able to deliver and personally set everything up for us Sunday morning, basically giving us so much more time to prepare other things in an otherwise impossible day. In the end, our reaaaaalllllyy cheap and crappy arch, which could've been serious disaster, turned out beautifully thanks to the gorgeous floral swags she put together for us. My bridal bouquet was equally perfect and I wish I could have brought it home with us. Such a great experience and would highly, highly recommend. read more

Although personable when ordering and apologetic after the fact when they provided a refund when no flowers arrived for our two events. I don't recommend this business. I called in two ordered flowers on Saturday, May 5th, 2025 for a Celebration of Life on May 10th. 2025 for my Grandmother. One order was for two alter flower arrangements for the memorial service at the church and the other order for six table arrangements for the luncheon to follow. Neither order arrived. We called starting 9:15 to see what could have happened because our delivery was late. No one ever picked up the phone, and no voice mail options were offered. I emailed using the email from order confirmations, but the response from Metcalfe didn't come until after the luncheon had already started, and we were left scrounging for flowers around the church for the memorial and had purchased "emergency flowers" from Felly's Flowers West for the luncheon. If you have an important event and would like the flowers to actually arrive, I would not recommend Metcalfe's Market. read more

Publix is the only 5-star supermarket I've come across but Metcalfe's is pretty awesome. The only thing missing here is an area to eat their prepared foods. If that had a little sit down area, then they would be on the same level as Publix. Their quality and level of service are top-notch. I was surprised by how well the store is run and how clean and organized every aisle is. Liquor pricing especially is beyond reproach. I was ordering flowers for a funeral and I am in Colorado, so finding the right florist was difficult. I called another shop that could not do it so they referred me to metcalfe's. Both Metcalfe's locations have met or exceeded my expectations. The produce always appears very well tended and presented. Fresh and vibrant. The selection is vast and not especially always higher priced than the competitors offerings. Though it is not the thrifty bargain shoppers best option. The meat and seafood counter and aisles are more varied than any grocery store but this too comes at a higher price. But if you keep you eyes open and have imagination it's absolutely possible to procure epicurean artistry. My personal mission is most often to source a less desirable cut of meat and devise something to be served and enjoyed as if it were filet mignon priced. Cooking seafood is among my least skilled abilities, I'm embarrassed to admit. So I am reduced to utilizing my single foremost favorite, Alaskan Salmon. I'll also happily and successfully accept Atlantic, as salmon is very forgiving and hard to not make delicious. Similar results with other oily fish, such as trout, though I concede it's not my preferred. The number of varieties seemingly always present at this (these two) stores is excellent. Shellfish included. I'm a perimeter shopper, meaning I make note to avoid prepared or packaged foods. I try to rely on homemade and from scratch as best as I can. For instance I haven't purchased canned soup since I learned how easy it is to make my own. Every protein I purchase, or nearly every, is purchased with expectation that some portion of it will serve a second purpose: stock or broth. That said, I'm still prone to keep a few ready made cartons on hand. My shame. Only a few occurrences come to mind where I wasn't able to find certain products I thought I'd only find in this store. I'll absolutely sing the absolute highest praises to the people who were working the bakery department last time I desperately needed a last minute cake. I wish I knew the ladies name, she was my saving grace when I realized I needed an item to be over the top and feared failure last Mother's Day! It is a bit pricier than Metro Market but the selection and customer service make it worth it. They have a full meat and sea food departments as well as a bakery and a florist where you can order specialty and/or customized items. They offer very reliable deliveries and same-day pick ups. As an international student, I especially appreciate the diversity of foods they offer, such as European cheese, cookies and crackers, and dedicated sections like Greek, Middle-Eastern, Japanese shelves instead of the usual messy "international" section. But really, the personalized and friendly (not in a pushy, car salesperson way) customer service is the best I've ever encountered. read more

Wow,. I was in this store years ago when they first Opened and I didn't remember it looking as it does now. It was an experience and if I shopped here often I could Get in trouble. It was all a about the presentation and customer service. I felt like I was in different cultural areas on each turn around the deli, shush, bakery, cheese areas as they were each their own identity with full service. Wow!!! This is an amazing market. I would never have to cook again. The prepared food selection is stupendous. But, today I was just looking for chocolate cake and I found it in the bakery amongst a lot of other delicious desserts. The dessert offering here is a million times better than the hotel I'm staying at. I ended up with a rolled up chocolate cake and a slice of tiramisu to satisfy my chocolate addiction. I recommend the rolled up chocolate cake but not the tiramisu, the powdered chocolate was a little to powdery and unpleasant to eat and not inhale and the soaked layer was just not good. I didn't have a chance to shop the aisles but for the massive prepared food section, I would come here first before ordering from my hotel. read more

Staff are so checked out! They never say good morning , good afternoon they ignore you! God forgive you ask where something is your response will be "that's not my department" this is the Metcalfs way! Metcalfs doesn't care about the experience. Today an employee taking a smoke break was right by the front door woman at 1ish on 12/30 so my experience walking into Metcalfs was cigarette smoke I let an employee know they didn't even apologize they said ok so i left my groceries and went to Whole Foods who cares more about customer experience . I have a choice now to walk from my condo to Metcalfs or WholeFoods I will go to Whole Foods at least they say Hi and are willing to help! I am happy to pay more for the experience ! An employee saying I'm sorry that was the experience you had how can I make it better would have been a better response but if your store is not customer focus that was the response should be. read more

This is a review for their catering services specifically. We got this catered for a party, and we ordered a couple of different trays: sandwiches, sushi, meat/veggies and dessert Sandwich: not super great - it's your typical simple sandwich platter with a couple of different cold cut options (ham, roast beef), and it comes in pita bread. It wasn't special, and the pita bread was a bit dry. Also comes with tomato and lettuce. Sushi: this was very average sushi, which I'm not expecting anything high quality because it's a grocery store. Had some veggie rolls in here as well Meat/Veggies: this was pretty decent. It came with a couple of different meats (salami, prosciutto), and some veggies (olives, peppers, artichoke). This most resembled a simple characturie board. Dessert: came with strawberries, brownies, a lemon cake/pastry and coconut/chocolate bar type of dessert. This was yummy! Can't go wrong with dessert. Overall, I think it was fine and decent for catering to a large group. read more

On my last visit they had 25+ different types of fish. Its always fresh with a large variety. It would be great if they had one on the east side of Madison. I love Metcalfe's. I think they have the freshest produce as well as meats and seafood. While they are pricier than Pick 'n Save, I think it's totally worth it. They also aim to sell local products, which is also pretty cool. What stands out to me about Metcalfe's is the customer service. Shopped for groceries here on Friday morning. I was disappointed by the produce. The things I bought that I couldn't inspect were all a bit old/over ripe -- ie grapes, cherry tomatoes in a clamshell, bib lettuce in a clam shell. Other unpackaged vegetables, like cucumber, I had to inspect to make sure it wasn't old too. Just seemed hard to find fresh stuff, and it's not cheap. Cheese section was amazing and they have a wide variety of meat and seafood, but it's pricey. I don't get to the west side often, and will continue to do most of my grocery shopping at Woodmans. Every. Single. Time. That I come here for lunch... the food and service quality is a gamble. Today, the odds were not in my favor. The prep foods department customer service is non existent. I'm ignored, it takes forever to be acknowledged, and the food is subpar. Last time I got a pizza they cooked it over a fire instead of the normal oven. The middle was doughy cold and uncooked. They make it feel like a bother to get help when you want to get a pizza made. The hot bar selection is a joke almost no vegetarian or vegan Options. I decided to update this review since I now go to Metcalfes about 2x a week for the last 2 years. Metcalfes is awesome. I don't care if certain items are a little bit more spendy, it's worth it to me to specifically go here instead of Copps. Staff here puts a little more effort into everything. For example, when you order at the deli, they will slice a piece for you and ask if you'd like it as a sample. The meat counter staff will always ask if you need any preparation tips or guidance. If you need to locate something in the store, they will personally guide you to that item. And at what other major grocery store do you see Buddha's Hand (citrus type) stocked year round? Plus it's open 24/7...there's no other place in Madison where you can get good bakery at 4AM (sorry Woodmans, it's true). Get on their email list even if you're normally not into that sort of thing. The weekly coupons in the email list are often AWESOME, like any type of butter (including the fancy organic stuff) for free, any frozen pizza free, a pumpkin, a boquet of flowers...never know what the deal is going to be! I'm on a Madison grocery store reviewing rage! Metcalfe's is pretty much Wisconsin's own version of Whole Foods. It has the same brightly lit displays and wide open layout. I think the prices are comparable as well. Metcalfe's carries all the local goodies (Potter's crackers, Mad Urban Bees honey, etc.) that Copps and Woodmans don't carry. Some items are a little more expensive than other places, but considering the convenience, I don't mind paying a couple cents extra to pick something up at Metcalfe's. I was looking to pick up some side dishes for a picnic, and decided to stop by the deli to peruse their prepared dishes. I ended up going with the signature potato salad, which a hit at the picnic! I'd say that Metcalfe's would be the place to stop after work to pick up groceries if you are too lazy or too tired to cook for the night because you could always make a pit-stop by the deli/hot foods/salad bar before exiting! read more

Metcalfe's, what is this? I am new to Madison and everyone can't stop talking about what an experience it is to shop here. It's the fine-dining of grocery shopping. Well, I have only been shopping like a grown up for about a year now - but I learned how to do it in Denver. So the bar was set pretty high through Whole Foods and Safeway. But I can safely say that my experience at Metcalfe's topped it. It was very clean and well stocked. I believe I went on a Friday night too. The main goal was to get some fresh meat and milk; let's face it - those are two items you don't want to get from an Aldi's or a Woodman's. I was told by a friend that I was lucky to live so close to it, but to be careful because it was expensive. WRONG, not expensive (or maybe Denver was expensive, so that word has become relative). Safeway had a discount meat section because it was within a few days of expiring (cook it that night and you're fine). Now, I wasn't looking for that at Metcalfe's (I don't know if they'd have that even), but I found $2 Pork Butt Steak (which, the mere name of the steak made me question it - but for $2 I'll try anything once). Delicious, and I won't go as far as to say I'm a great cook. Of course I also got some stuffed pork chops and fresh produce. But the experience I had was very pleasant and the prices were fair for the quality of food I was buying (dare I say, I thought prices should be higher). As for the atmosphere, I don't think I've gone to a store in a long time that played classical music. I almost feel like if I came in sweatpants and a t-shirt that I would be under-dressed to get groceries. Whole Foods ain't got nothing on Metcalfe's (leave my double negative alone). read more

The sweet potato pie recipe I'm working with for Thanksgiving calls for "3 large orange-fleshed sweet potatoes (Louisiana yams), scrubbed." I determine the provenance in produce sections checking addresses on boxes overflowing with yams. Seems you need to be in Louisiana to get your hands on those yams. Woodman's are from Arkansas ($3.27/lb) while Jenifer Street Market's yams ($3.91/lb) don't advertise their origins, but Metcalfe's maybe comes the closest. Theirs are from Mississippi and I bring them home with me ($3.49/lb.) The produce section, brimming with orderly displays, is clean and staff are available for questions and conversation (today it's about the romaine warning). The store is busy the day before Thanksgiving but I find plenty of room to move about in the aisles and through the meandering produce section with my cart. I appreciate the "road signs" drawing attention to local products. The check out process is quick and so polite with thanks from the cashier and bagger. It's a short walk to my car once I'm done with shopping. Should I have stopped at the cafe inside the store for coffee and a pastry? Maybe next time. read more

Walking down groceries store aisles calms my heart. If I'm having a stressful day I enjoy seeing the variety of canned goods and produce nicely organize. I guess I'm a bit of an OCD. I've walked through most groceries stores in Madison and Metcalfe's is definitely my favorite. It's cheaper than Festival or Whole Foods and the quality is much higher than Woodman's or Hy-vee. They have lots of small food brands you won't find anywhere else. It's the customer service here that gives Metcalfe's 5 stars. I was making lasagna and a lady was helping me Emmenthaler cheese. A month later while I was browsing through the cheese section, she came up to me and asked how my lasagna turned out! The checkout staff are also incredibly helpful. One day while the checkout lady was ringing me up, without asking, she called the butcher to make sure the lamb I bought was safe because it was slightly brown from oxidization. I live in downtown and will always make the drive out to Metcalfe's. read more

I enjoy this store for the variety and the classiness of it! Given that it is located in Hilldale Mall and near the Shorewood Hills neighborhood, Metcalfe's does cater to a fiscally higher-tier clientele. The prices definitely reflect this. The main reason that I will go here is for the specialty items; i.e. Clasen's Bakery items, deli and sushi. I do not come here for my main shopping but do not forget about it when I want a special treat! read more
