I always enjoy going to this market. Of the two markets I frequent Global and this one. Viet Hoa is always my first choice. Great selection of products. And some interesting products. I use a lot of different ingredients foe my cooking. Everything from pigs blood to Durian. And now they finally have my favorite instant coffee.. the white durian coffee.... For basic meats it's okay. Global is better on the seafood selection and protein options. But the hidden, and amazing gem is Hot and Spicy kitchen.... ohhhjjh that place.... I love it. Viet Hoa has been doing a lot of reorganizing and stocking new products so it's a refreshing change! However, I wouldn't recommend their ice cream or frozen mochi selections. I've tried a few different brands and the problem is always the same - the product melted and was refrozen which means the consistency is different and all of the product is on one side of the container. This market is huge with just about ANY Vietnamese ingredient you need, so I believe it is well stocked. It has anything and everything you will need. This place is way out of my way so it took me almost 10 years of living in Madison to make a visit. I haven't been to Great Hall yet, so excluding them, this is easily one of the top 2 Asian groceries in Madison by my accounting - such a good selection of Asian products. They have so many different types of frozen fish that are hard to find elsewhere (though they don't have sashimi). Lots of condiments I haven't seen at the others either, like pad kra pow sauce with holy basil. There are the obscure products too, like betel nut (I'd avoid it based on health reasons from Google... but I'd only heard of it in Thailand where many places ban it). If you're cooking for a party, they have a good number of food service-sized products like 5 lb cans of coconut milk or whatever. I don't need any at the moment, but they also have several flavors of boba powder (like mango and coconut) and dry boba pearls (for some reason they've been very difficult to find during COVID). read more

I've been to several Asian markets in the Madison area and this is by far the best. What I'm looking for is cleanliness, product variety, price, and location. This is the place to visit if you are looking for specialized ingredients for a special meal or to pick up a quick snack. Their banh-mis (Vietnamese sandwiches) are inexpensive - $3.75 each, I believe - and delicious. Good filling to bread ratio. They also offer grab and go fried sesame balls, red bean filling or mung beans, at the price of 75 cents each. All I know was that there were at least 15 sandwiches on counter, I grabbed 4 and the woman after me got rest. If you don't see sandwiches, just ask. I didn't look at the little deli at the back of the store but some people stopped in to order spicy papaya salad. Looked like they also serve Pho. There were a few tables and chairs so you could eat in if need be. Took a star off because some of the items in the produce section, although it was plenty, was not fresh. Also I looked at some items in the freezer section and looked they were freezer burnt. So look at your items carefully and just check it's not overdue or that the produce are fresh. I don't care for the customer service. It took a while to get the cashier's attention to ring us up. She sounded like a recording and robotic. read more

This is a great place to buy Asian groceries, and in our case, African/S. American produce. I stop in usually about once a month or so to buy specific things for our kitchen including those giant green Avocados, okra and yucca. I will also pick up ingredients and spices as needed if I'm making an Asian meal. The staff are very friendly and helpful but not overbearing. Another bonus is the dry goods isle which sells fun things including cookware, dishes, soap and incense. My only complaint is that they don't seem to move their produce very fast so it's not always fresh. I always have check to make sure that the stuff is still good before buying. Overall, it's a pleasure to shop here and I recommend it. read more

I come here for my Asian cooking items, weekly supply of fresh tumeric and ginger for juicing, matcha latte, grabbing frozen seafood at a better price then others around, when I want a Bahn Mi, and while waiting for lunch at Rosie's. The have everything you'll ever need and the best price around on tofu, squid, bok choy, fresh tumeric, coconut milk, cans of curry if you are cutting corners (nothing wrong with that, I'd never judge, I do it too sometimes), noodles, and super cute sweets. The owner makes a weekly Chicago trip in a box truck to hand pick loads of goods to bring back and keep the folks that live and breathe off these items happy. This hard working family are ALWAYS present and you'll get to know them if you frequent this place. Come for some items you can just warm up and enjoy with friends, try to make a few dishes on your own and get the ingredients here, or go crazy and try a few "exotic" items and see what you think. read more

My favorite new Asian market! Located right on Monona Drive, it shares the same strip as Rosie's Coffee Bar & Bakery. When you walk in, you'll notice straight away how bright and clean the aisles are. There are no putrid smells, unlike most Asian markets (hey, when you carry live crustaceans, that tends to happen, amiright? - it's a give and take). All the shelves are nicely stocked, properly labeled. There are rows and rows of frozen goods, neatly packaged produce, ethnic drinks (basil seed mango juice anyone?), spices, snacks, and there is a little deli cooler with freshly made spring rolls in rice paper, mochi, and bahn mi. Oh and if you love Sriracha, they carry Sriracha flavored potato chips here! I also bought some authentic China (Made in China!) because they were $3.49 and super cute. Seriously, come check this place out! The proprietor is super nice and attentive. This market has so many items and ingredients for all my Lao cooking needs. I love this place! We even found a fresh Lao food stall in the back that had delicious Lao food. This oriental market is full of many Asian food that you can't find anywhere else. However, when I was browsing through the vegetable aisle, I came across many vegetables that had mold, as if it had been sitting there for quite awhile. They are definitely not checking their perishable items and need to keep updated with the perishable items. Their customer service sucks. They kind of keep to themselves and would rather avoid you at all cost. They don't offer help nor do they simply smile but it's not a restaurant so it doesn't bother me that much. read more

I go shopping here whenever I decide to try my hand at cooking Thai food. They always have what I need. I'm also willing to admit that I love just perusing the aisles and looking at all the packages of things often labeled in at least two different languages. The odds and ends seem prolific to me. They do have a meat case in the back of the store, and honey it ain't your typical "white bread America" meat case. I don't know why, but I always tip toe past the meats as I oogle at the frogs, duck feet, pork bellies, and roly poly fish heads! The peculiar finale comes when I bring my items up to the register and a teeny, tiny, young girl is standing there eating a bowl of cereal. The first time this happened I thought it was very odd. Sometimes, depending where you are, Asian markets can be a bit, well, fragrant. Not so as campared with others in this area. Typical but a bit above average asian grocery store. Food items are well stocked, a lot of varieties including your everyday cut of beef. More spacious than your average asian store. As always expect no greeting upon entrance and departure. I visited primarily for the deli in the back of the store which turned out to be more of a disappointment than I thought. I was hoping for a more authentic home style cooked meal. Instead it was your everyday Chinese menu such as beef with broccoli, hot n sour soup, etc. the good thing is they have roasted duck and roasted sweet pork. A bit pricey but I wasn't sure where else they had an asian deli that served these so I bought some. They were good and flavorful but not worth it for a return trip here. read more

This is by far the BEST Asian supermarket in the Madison area. It is truly a one stop shop, they have essentially most of your needs. I like the wide variety of meats & produce they have that are usually not offered at other Asian markets. The only reason I rated 4 stars is due to lack of sea food selection, i.e. fresh fish, crabs, etc. Other then that the store is very spacious & not crowded like Asian Midways. Also most times this place is usually slow so you don't have to worry about long check out lines or a packed store. Very recently they opened up a small shop in the back that serves fresh hot foods. So far I've only tried the appetizers that were delicious but will be looking forward to trying other items on the menu soon. Highly Recommended!!! read more

As far as Asian specialty markets go in the Madison area - this is by far my favorite. Lots of selection and great prices. There are also very friendly people here that are more than willing to help point you in the right direction. They seem to be in the process of a remodel which is limiting the amount of selection in regards to frozen seafood and the like, however, there is still plenty to explore. I go here for all of my obscure item purchases and have never been disappointed in the quality, variety, or the prices - did I mention the prices!!!??? read more

While they do have a great selection of canned and dried goods, most of it is expired or the expiration date has been rubbed off. If you do end up buying expired goods here, make sure the can isn't dented and the lid isn't popped up in the middle. If the prices are cheaper than other Asian grocery stores, it's probably because their stock has been sitting on their shelves longer. When I went (8pm on Saturday), the store was completely empty except for two children. Turns out one of them was the cashier. Not my favorite store. read more

a new grocery store Madison needed so badly. We have Asian Midway that has good selections but the store is filthy and the place is run down. I have been hoping for a new grocery store on the est side of town for so long. It was very exciting for us to have our very own grocery store near where I live. I love the vegetable and frozen foods selections. Most important of all, the store is still new so it is cleaner than Asian Midway. I found that the price is a little more than Asian midway but i don't mind paying a few cents more to support a new business on our side of town. the owners are very nice. The Viet Hoa market in Monona is well worth going to for any asian food item you may ever find yourself in need of. They have a large store with extensive selections of asian foods from every country in Asia. The departments include: Fresh meat counter(mostly pork and chicken some lamb and beef) if your recipe calls for duck feet or chicken uteri, this is your store!, a small deli/prepared food case (fresh sandwiches and desert items), frozen fish dept. (many whole, with species I have never heard of), non-foods, imported asian consumables, and religious items, an extensive dried noodle aisle, canned foods also sauces & vinegars from all over, asian cooking utensils and pots galore, frozen foods, produce, and I have to mention the literal tons of sacks of every type of rice know to man, they even have red rice! If you are in search of authentic asian greens of any kind look no further. They have many greens I have never heard of and have no idea how to use but this is not a problem, just ask one of the friendly staff. The owner is always there and he is all too happy to give advice on food preparation and uses of the unique produce you will find here. I must also add that on regular produce the prices are always much less than Woodmans or Copps but supply and occasionally quality can be lacking. I always find myself buying much more than I had on my list, so bring some extra money and time--You'll need it! read more

My go to Asian store, they usually have what I need. Only thing is I can only go once in a while just because they are so far away.

Spoiled vegetables. Moldy fruits. Moldy pastries. I told one of the workers there that they should remove those products but she told me that the owner said no. So with that being said, the owner knows what he he is selling. One time, I bought a bag of vegetables and when I opened it, all the spoiled vegetables were in the middle hidden by the good ones on the outside. Never buy vegetables from there. The can and dry product shelves are way over stocked so who knows how long it has been on the shelves. The store was great when it first open, but now it has decline. One more thing, there is NO heat in this place. So if you plan to shop here, don't do it in the cold season. read more

Love this store. It's nowhere near as well organized as Yue Wah (and doesn't carry Hispanic, Middle Eastern or Indian foods), but their Asian selection is better and the prices are comparable. Plus it's much easier to get to for east siders and has better parking. The produce section is extensive and often insanely cheap (like cheaper than Woodman's, for better quality).
