This place didn't have any website or recent reviews. I wasn't quiet sure if they were open. I was open in a silent area. Blueberry raspberry oreo was a nice twist to oreo. Chocolate ice cream bar was slighly less rich, but still very good. Mango banana drink was a good one. Olive juice was something new to try. They had Melona popsicle. I bought a store made drink and a bun. Both were just ok. They had several products which crossed expiry date in the shelf. Finding the expiry date of a product here is an ordeal. Some products come with expiry date printed. Some products had a date printed, which happen to be the manufacturing date. Then there is additional detail on how to calculate expiry date written somewhere in small letters. read more

This is one of the larger Asian grocery stores in the Madison area. It's relatively clean and well organized. There is a good mix of produce, meats, non perishable items, and frozen items. They don't have a big selection of fresh seafood. There is a kitchenware section with utensils, bowls, plates, etc. Make sure you check the expiration dates as we noticed a few expired items. I love ging to this place for fresh veggies for my Ramen. Their prices are affordable compared to other grocery markets in the city. I usually purchase scallions, bean sprouts, sliced beef, and kimchi. They also have an awesome meat department. It is a small market compared to the east side's Global Market but with the price of gas on the rise J&P Market is the place to go if you live on the west side of Madison. read more

It's been a while since I last came here. Although, definitely smaller than a lot of other Asian Marts in bigger cities, but comparable to other local Asian mart with a decent selection throughout the store. I was able to walk through every aisle and picked up some of my favorites throughout the store. We picked up some snacks, and my friends did a bit of grocery shopping as well. As others mentioned, there is a a $10 minimum for credit card which is easily reached if you pick up just a few items. Additionally, there's also apparently a rewards system for loyal customers which I was trying to ask how to sign up for but the cashier wasn't very helpful. Otherwise, I'd say its worth checking out at least a few times a month to pick up some groceries and snacks that you wouldn't be able to find at other places. read more

This was an Asian market that was very close to my brothers house. We had planned to make Korean army stew and this market had all the fresh vegetables and ingredients needed to make the meal. There is nothing really negative I can say about this place other than the fact that it is on the smaller side. read more

I tried the sticky rice and duck blood fensi soup. I am terrified to see bones in the soup! It always felt like the chef put some overnight leftover duck to the soup and blend it with chili source. The sticky rice was oily and not tasty. It gave me a sense the food wasn't fresh. It was disappointing to drive 2 hours there. I cannot comment much about the market but the food from the deli stand was pathetic. read more

Ohmygerrrd. Finally, an Asian market on this side of town!! J&P is right across the street from Woodman's which makes grocery shopping infinitely more convenient for me now. (: Schweeet. I could tell J&P was going to be a winner as soon as I walked through the front door and noticed that ALL the signs were in Chinese. That's always a good sign. (: I moved to Madison last March armed to the teeth with all of my Asian culinary needs. Spices. Sauces. Herbs. I swear the only thing that I DIDN'T bring with me was jasmine rice. Since then, my soy sauce, miso paste, and sesame oil have been flown in from CA. My Hi-Chews, Pocky, yogurt drinks, and Hello Pandas have been flown in from DC. I've been surviving. Barely. Until now. The produce and butcher sections are limited, but they have all of the essentials. :) On the other hand, the frozen food aisle is fully-stocked with a variety of seafood, dumplings, buns, etc. They also have the biggest selection of Asian ice creams, popcicles, and other frozen desserts I have seen in the Midwest. Imma go get me some Melona bars as soon as I get back! It looks like they are planning on starting a restaurant as well, which is super exciting! I can't wait for it to open up. I waver between 3 and 4 stars, but that's only because I'm from New Jersey and there are Asian SUPERmarkets, not just small grocery stores. Crazy that I consider J&P Fresh Market small, huh? What I like about going to Asian grocery stores is the produce that I cannot find at a local supermarket. However, J&P kind of lacks in variety for fresh produce. They only had the one wall of produce. I guess, from a business standpoint, I can understand that there probably isn't a big market for Asian food. Well, there are definitely a number of small Asian grocery stores in the area. They should merge to create a huge supermarket. I digress... I was able to find condiments with ease, but I really only went for rice vinegar. From what I saw, there was a good amount of dry goods and canned goods. I think this next statement is what is going to bring my review down to 3 stars: they impose a credit card minimum of $10. I was semi-annoyed that I had to break my $100. I don't think the lady understood me when I said I would go find something to buy to make it to $10. At first, she peeked in my wallet and saw singles and asked if I had enough, and I said no. Then, after I offered to buy more, she was already giving me the change, which I received in all tens and fives. It's a petty thing to complain about, but this happens way too often. Who carries cash anymore? Anyway, because of the location and because they have my favorite Chinese vegetable - Water Spinach, I'll be coming back. read more

As a Chinese, I go to this store very frequently as I enjoy the variety of selections from Asian. However, what's making me disappointed is that you have to be very CAREFUL in picking up item, because the items may be expired for month and is still in the shelf. I've ran into this a few times already. I really hope this store can do better quality control and become the trusted store in Madison area. read more

PROS: Clean store, healthy selections, good variety, decent prepared foods section CONS: Small store I go to J&P for all my Asian ingredient needs. I really like how clean and neat the store is, compared to the other Asian markets in Madison. It is small, but I think that it has pretty much everything I need that I can't find at Woodman's. The produce is fairly fresh and neatly packaged, and prices are reasonable. They also have a selection of organic dried goods such as beans and grains, which is great. If you go on Fridays and Saturdays, they have a prepared foods section right near the entrance where they sell a variety of steamed and panfried buns. They're $1.50 each and they make them fresh throughout the day. They're quite tasty and a pretty good deal, all things considered. The only downside is that most of the store workers don't really speak English, so it may be difficult for non-Chinese shoppers to communicate. Also, there's a $10 minimum to use your credit card, which can be inconvenient at times. read more

J&P has become the premier shopping destination for anyone who cooks Chinese food since its opening in 2013. Great location--just next to Woodman's; great selection that it satisfy all my Asian shopping need in one stop. I used to shop at Garden Asian Market for many years, but now I shift entirely to J&P. First, the shopping space is so much more pleasant. Everything is in great order, clean and bright, and no bad odor. Second, J&P carries better quality meat and seafood than both Garden or Asia Midway. I always like their thin-sliced beef/pork for hotpot, best quality in town. Third, they scan barcodes instead of putting in every item by hand. I always think the latter may have mistakes that I cannot recognize. Finally, this place carries unusually large food selection from Taiwan (I am totally biased on this). I consider Taiwan's products are of better quality and with more stringent food safety standards. And, unfortunately, you probably need to read Chinese language, or at least are familiar with the kind of merchandises carried in Asian groceries, to fully enjoy shopping here. J&P may not have as many stuff from South East Asia, try A-mart or Yue Wah instead if you are shopping for SE Asia food. But if you are cooking Chinese, this place should satiate your needs perfectly. My Asian shopping tips in town: J&P (west side woodman): best in terms of Chinese/Taiwanese selection. Very clean. high quality. A Mart (Whitney Way): newest, and probably the largest, Asian market in town. Very large selection. SE Asia oriented. Some good stuff in their dessert/bread corner. Garden (University & Allen): A safe bet and contains a small deli Asia Midway (Park & W Wash): it really stinks inside. Quality varies. The best thing about this place is its central location. Yue-Wah (Park close to beltline): more SE Asia oriented. Very good value. clean. but lacks of a fresh meat and seafood section Madison Oriental market (Fish Hatchery): SE Asia oriented. Mediocre selection. But the deli in the back is a hidden gem. Lee's oriental (university): Exclusively Korean shop. owner is super rude. Don't shop there. Oriental Food Mart (park): Best Korean shop. Very good meat for Korean-bbq. Oriental Shop (park): Your only Japanese shop in Madison. Small but with some useful Japanese items. Caveat: I have no idea what's going on in this grocery store, except that it's filled with colorful foodstuffs not labelled in English. All signage is in Chinese, so if you can't read it, you'll just have to trust your luck and roll the dice! The produce area was more neatly arranged than most of the other Asian grocery stores in town. The frozen meats also had some interesting selections, like a variety of frozen fish balls (ah, I think there's what they were). So many other things! The store is really quite big and seems to be exclusively Chinese products. But I don't know what they were because I couldn't read the label! I went on a little adventure and bought some desserts, I was at least able to ascertain they were desserts. Will stop by for more randomness. read more

Nice location just opposite Woodman's. The store layout is very spacious and it's kept clean and nice. I especially like their huge selection of thinly sliced meats which is very suitable for steamboat/hot pot meals. I have also noticed they have live seafood on certain visits, though I've yet to try those. The treats from Japan are cool too, and J&P carries a wide range. Think macha pocky and the likes =) Those are still relatively rare to get in town, so I feel tempted each time I see them. I like that they have a program where you get to accumulate points on every visit based on spending. All you have to do is to sign-up for a member card free of charge. You get to redeem for rewards like coupons after a certain number of points. Being one of the newer asian marts J&P uses barcodes for almost all of their items. This is a great change from other asian marts who key in your purchases manually. Like a fellow Yelper pointed out it is now easier to keep track of what you buy. read more

Selection is not as great as other asian stores. Service is horrible! I don't mind that they alwAys speak Chinese to me, but when I tell them I don't speak Chinese they don't just stop speaking all together. No thank you they don't even tell me how much I owe. I've been going to J&P for a few months now. In fact, I do most of my grocery shopping there these days. The only thing I feel I need at Hy-Vee is ranch, cheese and my shameful soda addiction. At first I found the place a little overwhelming and a little cramped, but I'm pretty sure that's just the nature of the beast when walking into a new place and wanting to make sure you're respectful and not invasive. The staff there have always been warm and welcoming to me. It's so much better than the usual checkout folks down at A-Mart. So much so that I walked in there the other day and went "...no, this isn't right" and headed to J&P instead and I'd been going to A-Mart since I moved to Madison 7 years ago. (That said, the older dude at A-Mart, 40's or 50's I'd say has always been very helpful and kind. I'm just not super thrilled with the checkout staff there these days, but I digress.) Now, I've yet to need to ask people at J&P for help, but the interactions I've had with the woman most often at the checkout have been lovely. It's obvious she's not very comfortable speaking English just yet, but she makes an effort. Yes, it took us a few attempts to get past the point where she would ask if I had a membership and I would ask how to get one and then there'd be an error in translation somehow, but eventually we got there. Learning how to say thank you in Chinese is definitely on my list of things to do. Probably a few other things, but if she can make an effort then so can I. I've never been on a Friday or Saturday so I can't comment on the alleged hot food that gets served then, but I'm definitely going to have to check it out. I tend to do my shopping in the early afternoon during the week. Until recently it's been pretty empty then, but with everyone gearing up for holiday things I imagine that for the next month or so it'll be as busy as it's been. There is so much here. So so much. Yes, it's smaller than A-Mart, and there's less variety in the meat department than there and definitely less than at Woodman's across the street. I like it, though. A lot. There's a huge variety of things there and it seems like they're always getting new kinds of products and it makes it super easy for me to keep to my habit of walking in and trying something that I have no idea what it is. I've learned to cook so many different things that I used to rely on delivery or frozen to make since shopping here. Oh, and I absolutely love that there's always chinese music on the store speakers. It always seems to me (as someone who can't understand a word of it) that it's happy and just generally adds to the good vibes of this store and the people in it. Eventually, I'm going to figure out what more stuff is and hopefully expand the things I can make on my own. Oh! And the pre-sliced hot pot meat is the most amazing convenience and saves me a whole lot of discomfort and anxiety about having to ask the meat department at Hy-Vee or something to cut it for me. I love love love this place! Great prices and a good variety. I shop here for a lot of my produce. They have a great selection. They also have a good selection of veggie meat substitutes! The only negatives are narrow parking spaces and sometimes some of the produce can be wilty. But overall I love this place! read more

I though that this was very good I couldn't find miso paste and the very helpful employee showed me right to it also on that trip I needed a spice I couldn't pronounce the name but I showed him a picture of it and he showed me where it would usually be but under the circumstances they were out of stock. Best Asian market yet! Conveniently located near woodmans west. Well the cleanest and freshest for sure. Not only is the store clean and low in order but the store has a more open less compact feel and the meats and vegetables are the freshest I have seen at any store. Ever. Oyster Mushrooms and flank steak are $3 a lb cheaper then woodmans. Ginger and shallot are $1 a lb, green onions, tofu, meat bones, its all way cheaper then woodmans. This store sells live blue crab for $4.50 a lb. I'm a big fan of the sliced lamb which goes great with oyster mushrooms, green onions, soy sauce, and rice vinegar. I'm going to try to make a low carb pho later this week using Shirataki (japanese Yam noodles) later this week. I'm just getting into cooking new kinds of asian foods so I don't have more to stay about the selection but the cleanliness and freshness of the food and store really speak to me. I found the staff to be very nice. My cart was close to $50 and they kindly informed that if I could pick out a few more items and sign up for a free membership which will give me $5 off for every $50 I spend. So I walked out with 3 packages of the sliced lamb :) In regards the Tan M's comment: My feeling is from my two visits to the store that many of the people are not 100% adapted to US culture and some know less english then others. Smiling and eye contact as a form of politeness are universal to all cultures. In fact it is my understanding that eye contact with strangers is considered rude in many asian cultures. I can tell that they are good people and I feel like the person who took my membership information would have kindly helped me pick out items that I did not know about. I nice older lady who checked me out missed an item and after I told her about it she apologized to me and gave a bow. It was different then american culture however I could see the kindness and positive intent in the person as well as humble pride in her work and strive for perfect. These are good people and I hope more people try them out. In conclusion: I'm very glad I stumbled upon what I call the Fresh Asian Market. My Taiwanese friend told me about their roasted duck special on Fridays. They had steamed and roasted. I bought the roasted. They also had whole fried fish(tilapia?) which I would like to try the next time. The 1/2 duck had nice flavor (5 spice?) but some parts were a little tough. read more

When I saw this store I was so happy, finally an Asian store close to my home. I went there to check it out, it was ok, rather small but not bad(store wise) but people who work there were so rude. I was there at the time that they were not even busy but they acted like I was bothering them for going to shop there. I'll drive farther for a better service or even just a smile and not be treated like I went to bug them or to beg for their products. read more
