I mainly come here for the Chinese BBQ, so that's what I am rating. :) The roast pork and duck is really good--almost CHI quality, if ya know what I mean. Their deli also offers other Chinese sides and entrees, every now and then. The guys working the back don't speak much English but enough to get what you need--be patient bc it's worth it! They're also the only place that you can order and entire roast pig in Madison! You need to order a week in advance, and make a $50 deposit. The remaining fee is paid at pick up (~$5/lb). You can request it left whole or chopped up, too! Great for feasts (iykyk) ! ;) I've done minimal grocery shopping here and found they have a good variety. The Garden Asian Market is located off the corner where University Ave meets Allen Blvd and is easier to access coming off of University Ave. It's a little corner shop with a decent selection of groceries and various other snacks. There's also a gas station right outside of the grocery store and the prices here are relatively competitive, so it's not a bad deal to try to fill up on some gas if you plan to stop by for treats. In terms of cleanness, it wouldn't be the cleanest, so definitely recommend bringing some wipes or using some hand sanitizer before you enter/leave particularly if you plan on using the gas station. read more

The BBQ pork is great but it has gone up in price. The only place I can find it near me besides this is Chinatown in Chicago. Disappointed that the frozen egg noodles were high too. Would be nice if someone understood or spoke English better. read more

So very, very dirty and stinky. Just gross. I was so surprised because the Imperial Gardens Restaurant next door is so wonderfully clean with excellent foo. I think they are affiliated and hope the State does and inspection of the restaurant - it just can't be anything like the Market. I wonder how the Market gets away with such filth? read more

This is also one of my favorite go-to places for groceries. They provide a good shopping atmosphere and are well-stocked with asian groceries. My usual go-to asian marts such as JP asian mart, garden asian mart, midway foods and recently A-mart never lack any of the standard asian groceries I need. All offers a large variety of spices, fresh vegetables, frozen foods, sauces etc. What's special about garden asian market is their deli bar. They have a variety of roasted goodies, roast duck, roast BBQ pork (char siew and also the crispy skin pork) and the honey BBQ chicken wings. Other than the roast duck which is sold by half a duck or the whole duck, you can always get the other items by weight. Which is great since sometimes I'm just trying to satisfy my own cravings and other times I would have a group of friends over for dinner. The deli bar also serves hot cooked dishes every weekend. They typically offer a choice of 4 different dishes each time. These are again sold by weight. These are great since some of the dishes involves too much work to make at home while others offer the convenience if you feel lazy to cook over the weekends. I mostly come here for their deli In the back of the market (as one yelper has gone more into detail with). They have good bbq duck and chicken feet. The market itself is well stocked. I usual pick up some ramen, seaweed snacks, and asian pears. The gas is a plus and its usually the same price as pdq. This place is the only one of its kind! I'll give it 4 stars instead of 5 just because it's not a huge place with all the choices you'd get in a bigger place. But for what it is, it's a great little stop to get the essentials, especially for Chinese grocery items. It's easy to miss this place because it looks like a gas station as you drive by. Or a restaurant if you go from the other side. But once you go in, it's clearly an Asian food store. We stock up on some of the basics and always get at least one duck, which we think is excellent. I was so happy when this store first opened a few years ago for its location and being the first Asian store to accept credit cards and not being "cash only". After all these year, the best thing about this store (now that all other Asian stores take credit cards), for me, is their cooked food bar. Yummy BBQ and roast ducks every day and takeout Chinese dishes by pound Friday to Sunday. No takeout Chinese restaurant in Madison-Middleton region could possibly beats the price or the quality. Great grocery item varieties. Produce is usually fresh -- except you might want to avoid shopping between Sunday and Monday morning when everything just looks leftover-ish. Meat department is sub par except for occasional live lobsters and crabs; go alternatively for the freezer for frozen meats if you must. Last but not the least -- Could someone on the management PLEASE tell the female cashier not to "throw" the pen onto the counter but just put it down for the customer to sign their credit card slips? If I could have a nickel every time she did that to me.... I always went to a different cashier if there was anyone besides her (who seems to be the only full-time cashier). I went to pay for gas inside the gas station and charged 10.00 to my debit card and they ended up charging me 10.00 plus another 75.00 to my card and when I called they said wait 3 to 5 days but I shouldn't have to wait at all because I didn't give them permission to charge my card the extra 75.00 and when I explained to them the lady didn't speak much English and it is so fusterating that they charged me 75.00 and its their mistake and now I have to suffer for it I will never go back to this stupid dumb gas station ever again and they better give me my freaking money back .... This isn't a fully stocked Asian Market, especially if you're looking for ingredients for Thai cooking (for example, no galangal root, fresh lemongrass, or kaffir lime leaves for Tom Ka soup).
