This is a delightfully funky coffee shop near UWT! They have very limited hours, so when I had some time off I made sure to pop my head in here. Eclectic décor and inviting, it's definitely a great place to hang out for awhile and I see myself becoming a regular book reader here when it weather turns cold. I asked the barista about specials and was told they don't really do that, but they have a "surprise me!" menu. She asked me several questions and a random drink appeared! Great coffee. Metro Coffee was a recent discovery for me as I was going through the Tacoma UW campus the coffee shop caught my eye. I was involved in a previous commitment and was not able to go in right away so I made a point to return the next day. The coffee shop is relatively small and definitely for the university crowd but it was quaint all the same. I came here during my lunch hour and had my Vanilla Latte to go as if I stayed I probably would have exceeded my lunch time. The atmosphere is cute and a good place to relax or study that much is for sure. On my way back to work in the rain and under my umbrella I enjoyed my coffee drink a great deal. The drink was strong in caffeine which gave me a spring in my step from the midday slump. read more

This place has become my favorite coffee shop in Tacoma. The ambiance is warm and cozy, with huge windows that let natural light in. The baristas are always friendly and don't make you get up to grab your coffee off the bar! I'm a student at UWT so I come here almost every morning before class. I've been a student at the university where Metro Coffee is located and have been a customer there for 4 years now. Today, however, I received the worst experience I've ever had here, I left upset and embarrassed and it was not what I was expecting from these two ladies there, that have been there at least for a few years that I've been a customer. I usually come in with my friend to get free hot water for my tea. Every time before, I've gotten hot water on the right side of the store, by the cup lids/straws. This morning I walk in and just go up to the lady on the right side, asking if I can get water today. Instead of responding immediately she looks to the other lady, smirks and with an attitude tells me I can get back in line and I can get water. I said okay..? But I can though, right? I'm just trying to see if it's ALLOWED. I'm asking a question. I got back into line, frustrated and I rolled my eyes, the lady working the counter then calls me out, there are others around, saying I don't need to be rolling my eyes, she said I had to get in line. BOTTOM LINE HERE - I've been a customer for 4 years, have seen these ladies for a few, and have never had a problem before today. I felt embarrassed and disrespected as I was just asking if it was okay to get hot water. There was no need to further call me out, rolling my eyes after another employee was just giving me an attitude. I will not be back. read more

First, they have absolutely wonderful customer service every single time I have gone. No vegan options but delicious vegetarian options. Late hours in the morning (7am) which for me stinks because I take the bus before 7 but on the weekends, they are mine, all mine! The drinks I get are usually a tall vanilla soy latte with 3 shots or an Americano with 3 shots and a bit of steamed soy. When I first started working at UWT, I ignored Metro, thinking it would be much slower than Starbucks--it's really not, and it's much better. In the last year, I've succumb to the deliciousness of Metro's lattes; they may be the best I've ever had. (Though I'm not a coffee connoisseur, so who knows.) Avoid Starbucks's long lines and kinda mediocre brew, and head to Metro for a super friendly staff, warm atmosphere, and tasty coffee. read more

I agree with Dan (First to Review) that Metro has the best espresso within walking distance of the UWT campus. The staff is very competent and the smiles and greetings project an authenticity missing from the bigger shops and chains nearby. They seem genuinely concerned with producing quality beverages and pleasing their patrons. The art on the walls is well curated and frequently engaging. The space has windows on two sides, so even on the grayest days there's plenty of light to read by. If they could find a pastry vendor on a par with Macrina or Essential, they'd get a fifth star. read more

I attend UWT and prefer Metro Coffee over Starbucks below campus any day of the week. The coffee is good, never burnt. They have good creamer and it tastes YUMMO for sure! I've met here a handful of times with my professors & it's nice to not feel weird in a stuffy office with them. A solid suggestion, make it bigger! More tables would make it better for studying and hanging out while grabbing a delicious cup of coffee! Only real downside is they charge a .25 cent fee for using your card...which sucks because who carries cash? Not me! (Not anyone) read more

You don't need a treasure map to find them, but they are tucked away near the top of the stairs at UW Tacoma and finding them will be well worth the stair climb to get there. To those who know her, Stephanie will definitely rise to the challenge if you ask her to 'surprise' you. She and her staff make sure you have what you need, whether you are just grabbing a cup before class, or have time to relax and read the paper or do class-work. I was also happy to find that they have a wide range of teas available if you like that more. They also provide milk from a dairy that does not buy milk from farmers using rBST or rGBH. One thing to note: do NOT call the phone number on this listing. It belongs to someone else and has not been changed yet. Nevertheless, jump on the tram, get off at the UW Tacoma stop and head up the hill. It will be on the left right after you cross the old rail tracks, just before the top of the stairs. Metro Coffee is a cozy little hole in the wall kind of coffee shop with folks who you wouldn't mind being stuck with in such a tight space. The them is very "local" if that makes sense. Flyers, art for purchase, billboards and local alternative publications are quite prevalent on the walls and on tables. This is a very popular meeting place for Professors of the university and students who wish to avoid the hustle and bustle of Starbucks and Anthem Coffee. The owners are quite personable and skilled at what they do. You won't find many disgruntled workers here as the staff is very small, and they all seem to be close friends. Music choice is exceptionally diverse with everything from Afro-Cuban trova to Ethiopian instrumental masterpieces. Definitely somewhere you can find inspiration to write. Non of that pretentious French cafe music here. Did I mention they make coffee? The coffee here is great, but if you are into iced drinks, you may want to not get your expectations up so high as complicated iced drinks orders can sometimes result in someone's first attempt at it. read more

Metro is a funky little place on the UW Tacoma campus. A place like this could easily serve ho-hum coffee for students and professors who just need a caffeine rush. But instead, Metro brews up some of the best coffee in Tacoma--much better than the nearby Starbucks and Cutter's Point down the hill on Pacific. I usually just get drip, but when I order an espresso drink it's crafted with care and absolutely delicious. They also have cookies and pastries, but they go pretty quick. The walls are decorated with works by local artists, and it's a cozy place to hang out. And the staff are wonderful! read more

Today was my first time ever trying coffee other than Starbucks and it surprised me. I got a Americano for a pretty decent price and it was made fresh. I walked in and I was immediately greeted by the worker and the atmosphere was pretty chill and the menu with written super colorfully. This place has amazing costumer service. Since I will be attending UWT this fall, I would definitely come here more often for coffee. Sorry Starbucks but Metro won my heart. read more

Best coffee I've ever had. If you pop in early enough you may witness the staff practicing shots, which is so refreshing. It really is a skill. They use a timer as many other shops do, but they also watch for any burning and give it a quick smell to make sure you don't end up with a burnt shot, and remake it if it isn't up to their standards. They take pride in their milk foam, creamy like marshmallow fluff; not that dry seafoam nonsense you get at most other coffee shops. I recommend a dry cappuccino in their ceramic cups to really showcase this skill. You'll fall in love with it. I have never had a bad coffee here. Try their selection of pastries and muffins, for sure. They get them fresh daily, and sell the day-olds at a discount. I have forgotten the bakery they utilize, but they're local and very high quality. The owner actually drives to pick them herself every morning. They are not overly sweet and compliment your coffee perfectly. I know anthem has some hype and fancy syrups and starbucks is a constant, but you should really try The Metro. We just stopped in to grab a latte for the road after touring the Tacoma museum scene, taking advantage of free parking up the hill on Market Street. But $4 for a 16 oz. latte??? Really now, that is almost gouging. The coffee is fine, kind of mild and acidic like Tully's, if you like your coffee that way. It's a nice, cozy place with vintage bicycles on the wall, an old brick building on the west end of the exquisitely renovated group of buildings that house the new UW Tacoma campus. The espresso is pulled with care, fresh grind, a little tap tap, but no fancy pine tree or heart-shape latte art. I really want to like this place because I try and buy local. It's really not worth spending that much for a latte, seriously. read more

Most importantly: Location, Location, Location! I don't know a student, teacher or employee at UW-Tacoma who doesn't like Metro Coffee. It's cozy, it's comfortable, and they're friendly. What's more important is the environment: Artistic accents to an already familiar scene, in the heart of the UW Campus. I'll visit M.C. over any other coffee place anytime. The prices are a few cents more, but can you imagine the rent on that space? (Batista's have to eat, too.) It's never crowded, either, so you know how that affects the business model. I started going to Metro for the amazing coffee, and made it my destination coffee house because of the staff--they're genuine, kind, and always make my coffee with great care. They often draw pictures in my latte. One of my favorite things about this place is that they have generous options for corn-syrup free flavors, and the tea selection is excellent. The pastries tend to go fast, so if there's something specific on your mind, go early. They are now serving breakfast sandwiches and regular sammies too, along with a decent little selection of granola bars and power bars. read more

Recently, a friend invited me to join him at Metro Coffee. Normally, I'm not a coffee house patron, but my friend praised the coffee so highly I thought I ought to try it. Later, I went a second time. On both occasions, the coffee was first rate. I admit that's not much of a sampling, but it was enough to allow me to meet the owners/operators, and to size up the place a bit. My thoughts to date: It's a rather unique shop which has a good bit of appeal. Metro Coffee seems to me to be a bit of a throw-back to earlier years. It's a quiet place which has enough space to allow customers to enjoy their friends, and/or their electronic gadgetry, at leisure - while enjoying a moderately priced beverage and perhaps something to eat. In other words, it's a place to enjoy some down time, alone or with a few friends. In today's fast paced world, that's got to have value. Nevertheless, Metro is not without its challenges. Being located off-street on the UWT campus stairs, the shop is harder to find and get to than other neighboring food shops - including a direct competitor: Starbucks. Still, the shop is quite handy to Prairie Line Trail walkers and to UWT students, which should be a plus. For area shoppers however, all nearby parking is time-limited and not free. Also, there's not a lot of glitz at Metro, as is so common with the surrounding franchises. Finally, I found the snack and other food offerings to be somewhat limited. The proprietors are friendly and outgoing. They seem content to pursue their passion for operating a coffee shop rather than conquering the world with it. I base this conclusion on the low key nature of the shop as well as on the observable absence of signage and advertising. I wish the shop the best, but want to remind the operators of some conventional wisdom: "To become healthy, wealthy and wise, work like hell and advertise." Ultimately, the question will be whether Metro has found a niche that sufficiently appeals to UWT students and trail walkers, or whether, as with so many well-intended enterprises, the cruel economics of the small business world will ultimately be its undoing. Lousy, flavorless, coffee served at a lukewarm temperature and terrible customer service which likely is especially the case for customers who don't fit in with their preferred clique. I wouldn't go there if it were the only coffee shop in Tacoma! read more
