I was a satisfied Metro customer for more that 10 years and could have easily written one of the positive reviews posted here. However, based on a recent DISTURBING experience with them, I am writing this review. MY EXPERIENCE Metro Heating is a company that installed my HVAC system over 10 years ago and has maintained it since then. Being a satisfied customer, I also had Metro service my boiler & radiator system. Upon hearing a disturbing noise from my boiler system, I called Metro to fix it. The problem was that I needed a new circulation pump. Their repairman, after calling Metro's office, gave me a cost to fix it of $1936.96. Being a bit shocked, I asked him what this cost was based on and what was the cost of the pump. He was unable to answer and simply said that $1936.96 was the number that the office gave him. Being fearful about the safety of the system and trusting in Metro (based on our long experience with their service), we reluctantly agreed to proceed. WHAT HAPPENED NEXT A few days later, Metro sent me an invoice detailing the $1936.96 as follows: Diagnostic fee - $99.00; Replaced Pump with Air Vent - $997.96; Drain and Fill Boiler - $840.00. I checked with Home Depot & Ace Hardware and found that the retail cost of the parts that Metro installed was only $213.95. Also, the repairman was at my house for only about 3 hours. Assuming a labor cost of $150 per hour (which is on the high side of what other companies charge), the TOTAL COST SHOULD BE AT MOST $762.95 - namely, $99 (diagnostic fee)+ $450 (labor cost for 3 hours) + $213.95 (retail cost of parts). THIS $762.95 IS IN STARK CONTRAST TO THE $1936.96 THAT Metro CHARGED ME! I wrote emails to Metro asking for an explanation and a refund based on an adjusted cost. The only explanation that I received back was that the $1936.96 came from a flat rate book. I subsequently reviewed the issue in a phone conversation with the Vice President of Metro who said that he would see what he could do. Despite follow-up emails that I sent, I never heard back from him and never got any response at all from Metro. Metro's web site says: "Customer Satisfaction Guaranteed". We had a great experience with Metro. They were very prompt to reply. They came as promised, it was a 2 day project. Jake and jack were the two installers of our new boiler. I would definitely call Metro for any heating needs. read more

I had a FREE maintenance agreement with them. When I called the technician for a problem with the furnace, he wanted to charge a fee. When I complained, the company wrote to me "we are operating a business and driving to a location for a service call requires gas to get there, vehicle insurance, and someone's labor" read more

The technician did a good job but the prices are HIGH for the area. And if the job takes longer than estimated, there are additional expensive fees that you didn't plan on. Have learned my lesson; will go with another company next time. read more

Metro Heating has gone down in customer service, and gone up in significantly gouging customers. I have been their customer for several years and purchased two AC systems paying them thousands of $s; and also had maintenance contracts for many years. They choose to not honor the maintenance contract by refusing to work on my York furnace because I purchased a part instead of having them as the 'middleman' because they wanted to charge me almost $2000 for a part that cost me $145.44. This was after I spoke to their tech and their maintenance manager and they had agreed to install the part when it arrived. They reneged and wanted $1200 to install the part The was tantamount to black mail, because my furnace was down and we are having sub-zero temperatures. My plan is to stop giving them any business in the future and also make complaints to the PA Attorney General's consumer office for their shenanigans. My only regret is that I am unable to give them a 'zero' star for customer service and being super expensive. read more

I have used Metro on a number of calls for my very old furnace and they have come through every time. They may not have the answer right away, but that is understandable as trouble shooting older furnaces can be a challenging situation. In the past I have had to wait in the cold a bit going through a few service people, but the most recent time I called them they made better efforts to get people to work in a timely manner, so I didn't have to wait too long in a freezing house. Jake was my service guy this time and he did an excellent job. He was patient and did not try to push anything on me that was not needed and he more than fully answered my questions. This is such a crucial aspect of HVAC because understanding the issue helps immensely. I have my heat up and running and I can get a break from sitting there with cold hands and feet. The price that they charge is certainly honest and fair. read more

I had a couple of pipes burst when a tenant inexplicably turned off the heat (yes, I don't understand it, either). I was in a bit of a panic when I discovered water coming through 2 areas of a dropped ceiling. A friend had used Metro Heating for a new furnace and sang their praises. Metro also has an award from Angie's List, too, so I figured I'd be in good hands. First, the pluses: I called and they got me on the phone with a service technician right away. He advised me to meet him at the property with a jug of car antifreeze. He winterized all of the drains in baths and kitchens and toilets, to prevent further damage (the inside temp was 38 degrees). He was able to get the furnace back on, and completely bled the system (it's hot water boiler heat). Unfortunately the leak originated from a pipe servicing the furnace, so the furnace had to be shut down. The technician turned the water off at the main shut-off and opened up all of the taps on the faucets, again to prevent further freezing/water damage. Finally, he identified a problem on the supply line to the boiler, the absence of a back-flow preventer. The not-so-greats: even though he identified one leak and had a service van with him (presumably with basic parts, like copper pipe), he told me he could not make the repair. "The earliest anyone can come is Monday". Um, what? I have a house that's 38 degrees and now it's going to be two more nights before anyone can make the repair. Even though Metro Heating specializes in hot water heat, the sense I got is a reticence to do what they consider to be "plumbing work". I don't know if the technician wasn't authorized to do repairs on leaky pipes or wasn't able to do plumbing repairs, or if they don't, as a rule, do what they consider to be plumbing repairs. But it would have been nice to know that beforehand. The bill was $275 - $88 for the service call and nearly $200 for 1.3 hours of a service person's time. It was Friday night after five, so the labor includes overtime. Their office staff is also not great. I have called at least four times, asking for an electronic copy of the invoice and work ticket for the job so my insurance company can cut me a check so I can pay the invoice. There's been a lot of finger pointing and blame placed between two office people and the bookkeeping dept. I don't really care who dropped the ball, or who gave who the wrong email address or what happened, I just want the invoice. How hard can this be? It's been three weeks since the "work" was performed and still no electronic invoice. I'm wondering how long it will be before I get a past due notice in the mail. read more

I have had reliable and responsive service from this family owned business for several years. They recently replaced my furnace after the heat exchanger rusted out. Bill and Jay did an excellent installation and Mitch followed up to balance the duct work to optimize the air flow with the lower speed of the new furnace. Very professional all around. read more

Used Metro for hot water heating system - portion of the house was always HOT and another comfortable - They did an incredible job with CREATING a new manifold and zoning the house so that the entire house is comfortable PLUS this work reduced the heating cost by 33%. Additionally they identified an incorrect radiator set up and redid it which further improved the overall heating within a very large dining room. Found them very reasonable and knowledgeable regarding hot water heating. read more

Used this company for service on existing furnace repairs. New ownership is full of excuses and apologies. Try someone else.

Problems beginning to end with Metro. Neither furnace nor heat pump were initially installed correctly. Interior work related to the installation was just as bad - didn't install correct number of runs, ductwork for one run was later discovered to have dethatched completely. Ownership tried to blame all issues on the house or me creating problems that weren't there. Stay away from this group. read more

This company was better when the father (William Wessner) owned and managed it. I bought both an AC system and high efficiency furnace from them. Since his two sons have taken over the business, it has gone downhill. Now when the service man comes to inspect and clean your system, it seems like he's always trying to find something wrong, even when everything is operating just fine. As a result, I've stopped getting checkups done. read more

i never had any problems with Metro and the former owner. We picked this company to put in the air conditioner we have. This was done 12 years ago. They installed n efficient furnace about 8 years ago. The service people were always well trained and prompt. Now there seems to be a change as the management has changed. Service maintence is seemingly not a priority and I don't know if I will call them if we have a problem. read more

This was my go to place for these services for years and I considered them to be 5 stars when they were based out of the Banksville Rd location. Now they are under new management and based out of Canonsburg and they seem to be short staffed and the person who schedules the techs is not all that concerned. I will most likely have to look elsewhere the next time I need these services. read more

It is with great pleasure that I recommend Metro Heating & Cooling for any of your HVAC needs. When I went to the local hardware store asking for help and/or recommendations, they immediately recommended this company. They said that they heard many good things about their products and service. I remember driving to work in Pittsburgh and passing their location on Banksville Road. Their marque was always unique and heartwarming. I remember that warm fuzzy feeling and thinking, I'd really like to work with those people! I called them in 12/2015 and got a quote on a new replacement furnace and some ductwork patching. A year later I stopped by their office and met with the owner. My request was that would requote the work within a close price point. I approach price negotiations like going to war, but I was never countered. He got to know me, my needs, and situation. A day later I got an email with their proposal. I got proposals from other local companies, but Metro's was significantly less. He kept the price the same as in 2015; however, the furnace was an upgrade and he proposed to do other necessary work, all at the same price. The installation went great and the serviceman was so personable and professional. My new furnace, new ductwork, venting, and programmable thermostat (all for that same original price) works great. I couldn't be more pleased! My gut feeling about this company was right! read more
