I participated in an afterwork group outing at the MRZ zipline / obstacle course. It was a bit nerve racking to be up in the trees with just a hook and cables to rely on, but i did what i could and then gracefully bowed out. I should have followed my other coworker who took the easier path as she finished way early. I may try again and complete the full course. read more

Our visit to the zoo was on a beautiful spring Saturday in April. It is laid out nicely with paved paths and directional signage. There are so many different animals there. They have a lot of primates. One can feed the giraffes. It's cool to be so up close to these creatures. They have a 20 minutes train/tractor ride, but there's typically a little bit of a wait. You have to purchase the train ticket before getting on the ride. Some folks waited in queue only to realize that they hadn't bought their ticket when it was their turn to get on. I would recommend buying admission, giraffe, food, and any other add-on features online. There wasn't an extra charge. Also, I would recommend packing a lunch if you intend to stay more than two or three hours. They have a snack shack and a ice cream window. I think they're usually very busy. read more

The parking was included in the prices, so it is better than a lot of events that way. Lots of sitting and places to relax in the zoo. My husband and I live about an hour and a half from Richmond, and once we heard they had a pygmy hippo, we'd been wanting to visit the Metro Richmond Zoo for a while. We finally made time and I'm so glad we did! This has to be one of my favorite zoos I've ever been to. We bought a feed cup for the animals, and it was worth every penny. It was a good size, and you could feed the animals as you walked through the exhibits. Even though the zoo is smaller and has fewer species than some larger ones, it feels more interactive because so many animals are right up close in their habitats. My highlights: Feeding the giraffes - we were able to get so close, and they ate right out of our hands! Seeing Kumbali and Kago - the cheetah and yellow lab were adorable together. Meeting Poppy and Iris - Poppy the pygmy hippo is so cute, and her mom, Iris, kept opening her mouth for treats. There were several great viewing spots to see them up close. I bought a Poppy t-shirt from the gift shop. :) The Skyline ride - I thought it was just for kids at first, but adults can go too! It gives you a really cool bird's-eye view of the park. The only small downside was that on the return trip, we were facing the sun and it got pretty hot, so maybe save it for a cooler day or go earlier in the morning. My family and I went here on a Monday during Christmas week, and it was the perfect family excursion. The weather seemed great. until we got there and it was cold & windy, thankfully we had coats in the car because it's so open there, you have nowhere to hide from the weather. Anyway, they had a deal on tickets.. for 4 ppl online there's a $20 discount cheaper than buying them at the door. the clerk was nice enough to explain the better deal when we asked how it worked. Adults were $27.95 each. Kids were $20.95. We purchased food to feel the hooved animals too. Note: it goes very fast. buy alot. Once inside. We saw lions. monkeys. hippos, bats. crocodiles, giraffes, penguins, wild hogs, a cage of bird to walk in and feed with them flying around your head, foxes, flamingos, grey wolf, camels, peacocks and more. This was so fun to hang out and interact with the animals. I would love to go back when it's warm in the Spring. read more

I had such high hopes for this zoo. We drove from Hampton, VA. It was about a two hour drive, upon arrival I realized that there was no sign in the front stating you were arriving which was odd to me.. parking was weird also. They didn't have an actual parking lot. We bought our tickets there, for me and my three year old I paid 46$ (didn't think the price was worth it.. at all) you also have to pay additional for the train, toddler rides, food cups etc. The zoo is rather big which was nice, but the enclosures for some of the animals threw me off guard. Some were small, didn't have anywhere for the animals to go to get out of the shade.. just kind of pissed me off with charging 25$ for a single ticket and can't even make the enclosures look nice.. we went into the reptile area and couldn't even see into the glass because it was so dirty. The Bat area is so dark inside we couldn't see where we were walking. I did like how many food areas there were but the only down fall that scared the hell out of me was the yellow jackets. They were EVERYWHERE. I get it being summer time but they had "traps" where children could grab them which, sadly my daughter did and let to her getting stung (by the food area in the back by the snowcone flavor thing) There's just some down falls, I feel like the Norfolk zoo is nicer presentation wise, but of course not as big. read more

Made a day trip down to Richmond just to see Poppy the baby pygmy hippo - she's so cute! Overall the zoo has an older/outdoorsy vibe to it which made for a nice walk. They also have a ton of animals plus some encounters I've not seen at other zoos. I didn't pay for the rides or cups to feed the animals but it was definitely a popular option. We were looking forward to our visit to the zoo during our Williamsburg VA vacation. We drove to Richmond on 3-26 and were extremely disappointed and somewhat alarmed at the conditions at the zoo. The exhibits were old, not well maintained and we had some concerns regarding whether the animals were being properly cared for. Many had no water or enrichment toys; and in several cases the water areas that were provided looked filthy. In particular, the lone tiger in the exhibit was pacing in a dry yard, with no water or toys. All of the wood used in the exhibits was old and splintered and there was not a zoo keeper to be seen. Would definitely like to see whatever animal protection agency in Virginia that handles zoos take a close look at what is going on here. read more

Finally came around to take the family here one weekend. We went several weeks ago and my youngest asks when the next time we will visit. Plenty of parking there, we went right when it opened up and we bought tickets ahead of time so that we didn't have to risk our kids being impatient. If you have a kiddo that are not able to walk far, highly recommend bring a stroller! I'm so glad that we brought my son's adaptive wheelchair. He walked when he could but I enjoy the fact that it is a wheelchair accessible. My youngest LOVED Poppy the baby hippo, we actually went to see them about 3 times (2x before we left haha). Loved all the animals that they had there and it was a fun filled day with our kids. We packed our snacks, drinks, and lunch so I can't say much about the foods that they had there. Overall, the family experience for our visit was great. We will definitely be returning! (Highly recommend to stop at Kline's icecream - about a 5 min drive - for their ice cream treat. If you went to JMU you know what this place is.) Great family weekend date! read more

This zoo is pretty cool. The variety of animals is wild! From armadillos to zebras! Lions, and tigers and bears, oh my! You'll see it all here at the Richmond Metro Zoo! We ended up getting a membership because the deal was fair and we have friends who we meet there! The loop is a good walk, so you get sunshine and exercise while enjoying the animals. They give the animals a pretty natural environment and their habitats are well maintained. All the animals were out on this breezy, warm day in March! We go up close and personal with many of them. My favorite spot was all the parakeets... you can get in the net with them and feed them while they flock all around you! There are a couple places to get ice cream, drinks and snacks. And you can buy cups of food pellets to feed the animals. There's a zip line, a carousel, and chair lifts sky lines to get an overhead view of the zoo. The four star is because the restroom facilities were gross, dirty, trash on the floor and unkempt. Spruce them up and you'd have a 5 star rating! I've been to this zoo 3 times now. After my first visit, I signed up for a membership. Normally I wouldn't do that, especially since the zoo is a 2 hour drive for me. However, this zoo was fun. I love the variety of animals, and the fact that you can feed the animals is nice. Favorite is feeding the giraffes! As far as pricing, I think it's fair. Cup of food for the animals is $3 while the bird stick is $2. What the zoo can improve on is the food options and making the train ride longer. While their animal roster was impressive for the size of the zoo, it was honestly sad the size of space some of the animals like tiger or snow leopard had in their exhibit. My back yard is bigger than the space given to the tiger and bears. I know they are required to meet a standard, but the Richmond zoo is a private zoo so they aren't held to strict standards such as others that are required to follow AZA accreditation. My family has the yearly membership to go here and it is okay. It can be a little underwhelming when we came from San Diego where the zoo has us a little spoiled. Some of the experiences are pretty fun, like feeding the budgies, feeding the giraffes, and riding the train. Other bits can be disappointing, like the little monkey viewing area near the reptile house, since the glass is entirely scratched up and impossible to see through. Overall though, it is not a bad way to get out of the house some days and do some walking. We did come here on a field trip this week though and I will say that the experience for the field trip was not a great one though. We arrived and we were trying to get the stickers to hand out to the kids before we got off the bus. They don't do that. You have to line up on these lines in the parking lot before they will address the kids. But in our case, there was another school arriving just after us and they wouldn't start until the other school had unloaded from their buses, walked across the parking lot, and lined up too. So the staff could then press a button to play a 30 second recording. I found it a little annoying that we were at the zoo for almost 30 minutes before we were able to go inside. Which I know sounds like a nitpicky, harpy thing, but as a Title I school, it sort of pissed me off that the 40% of our students who had to scrape together funds to go here, missed out on so much time that they paid for. They finally passed out all the stickers down the lines in the parking lot, and they got placed on the kids shirts. We start to go inside, and the lady directing people into the gate freaks out and starts screeching that one of the kids didn't have a sticker, because it had gotten stuck to the person behind him in line while they were walking. But like... screeching at a child on a school trip like he was a criminal... Really professional and not at all crappy behavior... My group and I were having a bathroom break at the front and I saw her blow a gasket a second time when one of the teachers and his group were walking back in from the parking lot "didn't stop to show her the stickers" that were attached to their clothes... I just found her behavior- screaming at paying customers and children - to be pretty unprofessional. We will continue to use our membership to come here, but I was really disappointed by the way they handled being around the children. read more

My family and I really enjoyed this zoo! We came on a Tuesday around noon. It was pretty quiet and not crowded at all. We took our time and walked the ground. While as other posts said, there weren't a whole lot of bells and whistles, but I found it peaceful on a beautiful day. We bought food to feed the birds. It took about ten mins before we were able to catch them. I recommend going there first before they're all full and don't want to come. We also bought food to feed the animals. My kids loved feeding the giraffes! We also did the carousel which was the perfect ending to the day. Also to note, the food here was decent and reasonably priced. I've thought a lot about how I should word my feelings about this zoo and my experience. I'm somewhere between a 2 and 3-star rating. I love how fun zoos can be, so we continued our tradition of visiting a zoo each vacation we go on. This year we chose the Richmond Zoo, and it was not a show-stopper. We arrived around 1pm on a Tuesday, and there was plenty of parking. We stayed until about 4pm. There was no signage about the zoo from the highway, but you see it after you make the turn in. They might benefit from that free highway advertising if possible, and it helps with navigation. We purchased our tickets for $24 per adult. They offered us a 'zoo treat cup' to feed the animals, and it looked like kibble. I didn't like that you could feed almost any animal the same kibble. Shouldn't their diets be more customized? When you walk in, the whole place just doesn't have any color or pizzazz. They play no music, and their signage designs are all outdated. Don't misunderstand that, their signage will say 'new zoo baby! born last month' in the same faded and outdated design. It is an odd choice. Here are the good things. Their animals look healthy and they seem to provide a lot of enrichment. It was mid-October, and they were probably the most active animals in a zoo I've experienced. The place is real quiet and peaceful, smells real woodsy, and is rather clean all around. My husband commented that the lunch and snacks they sell at the cafe are probably the most reasonable prices he's ever seen, meaning they don't appear to have increased in a while. The zoo's kibble food comes in a paper cup, as their website states their hatred toward the damage plastic has on animals. They also have PVC pipes next to trash cans that are designed to collect the paper cups and keep them out of the waste bins, however, their design needs updating to help further reinforce the use of the PVC collections. If they were clear, and one cup was always inside, that's enough of a visual cue to the visitors on how it works. A picture of this is included. Walking around the zoo is very serene and the woods area they have is rather beautiful. They are also making strides toward expanding their zoo to new areas to house more animal exhibits. As you walk around the zoo, their concrete paths need fixing. There are quite a bit of uneven walkways, with clear potholes in the paths. I saw maybe one orange cone indicating danger. The day we visited, their penguin-drop ride was broken, as was their sky ride. I love sky rides, so that was disappointing that it broke just the day before we arrived (I asked the staff: when did it break?). They appear to have put a lot of trust on the visitors, as many of the animals have wired fencing to their cages instead of glass, so anything could be thrown inside, fed to the animal, or the animal could be pet. They had workers around doing their jobs, but really no one supervising to prevent abuse or danger. The saddest part of the visit was their poor farm animals. I am not an animal expert, and you can view my posted photos, but the goats appear to be grossly overweight, and I assume that's due to the unregulated 'zoo treat cups' and visitors just feeding them all the time. If I am wrong, I will gladly update my review. Overall, I unfortunately would not recommend a visit. I even Googled 'zoo red flags' and this zoo didn't really exhibit any of them, except for the pacing lions, but I didn't enjoy myself too much and wasn't impressed. They would highly benefit from a better marketing team to update their signage and stop selling the zoo treat cups. read more

I took my grand kids, 5 and 2. I reviewed information on web for prices and took about $66 cash, no wallet left all that in the car. Had the stroller and diaper bag with snacks and water. There was a small line of about 6 families but we got through. Jason the only person working the window, we got up there and it was a bit more than expected 66.85 so I'm short 85 cents. Omg Jason didn't have the business acumen or customer service skills. Not his fault. He actually was going to have me go get the .85 and get back in line. Thankful for the nice lady that gave me $1.00. I don't have to ever go back, besides I feel sorry for the animals. First time ever to this zoo but I am an avid zoo traveler. This zoo has a lot of tree cover and parts are totally a walk through the woods. They currently have two baby snow leopards and two baby cheetahs. There is a sign that says they've had 40 cubs in ten years so I imagine you can probably see cheetah cubs here most of the time. There is a chair lift that carries you over part of the zoo which was unique. You can also buy feed here to feed giraffes, goats and the budgies. Cool zoo! read more

Literally the largest scam, first of all you have to pay to get in, which I understand, but then right at the entrance is where you buy the food for the birds and other animals (more on that in a second). As you walk around every last trashcan is filled to the brim and covered in yellow jackets, even saw a few European hornets. Most of the animals are far and hard to see, especially for people with little kids. This leads me to the feeding of the birds in which you can't even go into the birds unless you have food. Which is purchased all the way by the entrance. Next once your in the bird cage, you can't step on the rocks and all the birds are no where near the path. DO NOT by the bird food literally a giant waste and they refuse to refund. Also the employees scream at you if you step on the rocks to feed the birds, and tell you to just hold out the stick.. the birds do not fly to you Next the other animal food, which is even more expensive then the bird food. There are like 5 other animals you can feed.. giraffes, goats, deer and a few others in which you can't really "feed" them it's more throw the food at them and watch them eat.. Next that leads to the other activities in which you have to pay even more money to use, didn't really look at much of that. read more

The zoo has a lot of parking and the animals seem like they are cared for. They have a great variety of animals that are fun to look at, but the park needs a lot of repairs and upkeep. The asphalt walkway needs really bad repair all around the park and fences need repairs. I was here around 12 years ago and it was still the same today, but it is still fun to go. Me and my 2.5 year old have a membership and we try to come here about 2 times a week. He absolutely loves it. We usually come in the morning when it's not too hot or crowded. He is so intrigued by all the animals, and the staff are always so friendly and greet us every time. They also have a ton of things to do and a huge area for picnic with several covered gazebos. They have zip lining for older kids and adults as well as a merry go round. I highly recommend getting a membership if you are going to come even a few times a year. I love this zoo! Mike and I went there on a weekday while on a mini vacation and even though it was kinda overcast and there was a bit of a mist here and there, we had a great time. I guess I am telling my age when I say the last time I had been to this zoo, there just wasn't much there. We ended up going back a few weeks later and discovered that we had totally missed a great part of the zoo! So, if you are like me and waited a few decades to go back, you will find that this is a real zoo with a lot of animals and educational opportunities. I am actually considering a membership, because I definitely wouldn't mind going back a few more times. We still haven't taken the Safari "Train" ride, and now they have drive through tours on Mondays and Tuesdays for winter? She the car door! (Not open for walk-in on those 2 days) Everyone we encountered from ticketing to on hands animal staff, were all friendly. We felt safe, they have cute signs to remind people to social distance. And they are operating at half capacity, due to Covid. And, of courses, the animals...we never saw anything disturbing or animal exhibits that made us feel uncomfortable. All the animals appear to be well fed and nourished. I'm not a veterinarian of course but I went to the Bronx zoo many times when I lived in NY, and have been to the Baltimore Zoo a few times, and of course the Smithsonian Zoo, and I have seen a few animals that looked ill, sadly. Not the case here at all. A must see: Kumbali and Kago. Don't Google it until AFTER your visit. I love the big bird aviary, the budgies, getting close to the giraffes, feeding the goats, and discovering so many species of monkeys. Something about our local little zoo just gave me the good feels (much needed) and I highly encourage folks to head out to Mosley and check it out. read more

After reading some reviews I must say I was a little hesitant about checking out this zoo. With that being said I am glad I did, had my nephew who is 11 with and boy did he enjoy this place. I feel it is vastly underrated. All the animals were visible at each exhibit and seemed to be well cared for. You can definitely tell this is not a big corporate zoo but the prices were very reasonable and the seem to be adding on new areas for animals. This was our first trip to this zoo and it did not disappoint. Loved the easy walking paths and all of the animals were right up close and interacting. So many things to look at for just one day. Good thing we just moved here and got a membership. Now we can come anytime and just sit and watch the animals. I highly recommend you get a cup of animal food so you can feed the animals. Habitats seem poorly made and maintained. Many animals such as the tiger, monkeys, and birds don't have nearly enough space as they should. Main reason for the low rating is that we came to see capybaras, but apparently there's only one and she hides beneath the boardwalk where you can't see her. If the habitat was designed better, with a place for her to get away from the other animals while also remaining in sight for visitors, would increase my rating. Maybe have her in a different enclosure if the other animals harass her. read more

The property was beautiful and a good size, rides were fun, the animals looked well cared for, there were plenty exotic animals and animals you can interact with. We loved seeing the rhinos and monkeys. I loved the raccoons and peacocks that roamed! My son enjoyed any animal he could feed! Well worth the trip! Covid-19 conscious establishment! Yes you can go to a bigger funded zoo like LA, DC or San Diego (all that I have gone to) but you don't get the immediacy like this one! read more

It is very exciting seeing the animals in their habitats. The people there are very kind and friendly. The best part is the ropes course

I first went to the zoo about 15 years ago when it was very new and had little to no expectation. I was really quite impressed with what this local private zoo has been able to offer. I love their cheetah breeding program and find it easy to see how they have continued to invest in the business. Walking pants and animal exhibit's have been renovated and upgraded over time and the assortment of animals has grown consistently as well. I love the pygmy hippo and emus and might be one of the few big fans of the bat house. We always take a ride on the chairlift to get a Birdseye view of the park and the animals. The place is up to standard, tidy, and the animals seem quite well taken care of. They have a grassland and savanna safari ride that you can take on a tram through a large part of the park dedicated to African animals of the plains, and for most people you'll find several exhibits to be the highlights of the day, including the snow leopard, tigers, and rhinos. I look forward to seeing what the next generation of expansions and improvements will be for the Richmond metro zoo. * A small fact, the Richmond metro zoo actually occupies a larger space (by footprint and acreage) than the famous San Diego zoo. read more

They otherwise have chicken sandwich chicken nuggets hot dog and snow cone. Despite their very limited menu, it is painful, slow and embarrassingly disorganized. We waited over 40min to get one order of chicken nuggets. They allow external food and drinks; this is the right choice. Parking is free, and not entirely paved. The feeding the animal component is better than most. Many of the exhibits are great. Some seem smaller and basic. You can get closer to the animals than most zoos, perhaps at the danger to the animals. (Saw a kid throwing rocks). Seem focused on conservation which was appreciated; unless you consider the waste of your time at the concession stands. read more

Very understaffed. Recommend not eating there except for maybe snacks. The actual food is terrible and takes forever. Restrooms are not clean, in general run down throughout the zoo. The table area is very dirty. Last time I was there they wouldn't allow families into feed the birds unless you had purchased one stick per person- made my 5 year old go in alone as I didn't have one for myself and youngest child who were planning to just watch him. They don't tell you that until ready to go in and the line to purchase any more was incredibly long. While I usually love trips to this zoo, I have issues with their Covid protocols. While they are doing timed entry, that just means it gets busier and busier as the day goes on. Masks are not required or enforced. I know this is primarily an outdoor venue, but that doesn't eliminate risk. While there is opportunity for several pathways to be one way to reduce congestion, none of them are. It was way too crowded for comfort. They're trying but there's definitely opportunity to do better. read more

Excellent zoo, especially with the new additions when they reopened for the public. They built an awesome otter exhibit and another with sloths and a few other animals. My daughter and I always enjoy our visit there. Employees are always courteous, the price is affordable. The year membership is a steal! One of the best things about this zoo is the amount of interaction you can have with the animals. They all seemed very well cared for as well. Unfortunately this review is shy of 5 stars because of they lack of safety precautions due to COVID. Upon walking to the ticket window, a recording is played about wearing masks, etc. There is also plenty of signage encouraging no congregating, social distancing, etc. Despite many employees walking/driving throughout the zoo, the rules are not strictly enforced. The zoo is not too busy during the weekday between the morning and noon time. If you want a sense of normalcy and not wanting to worry about a mask, this zoo is fantastic. read more
