You should get the bus since the metro would be downtown and then back out. I was here by metro and found the station easy enough to navigate. There is a confusion layer because two metro lines meet here. Despite being a relatively new station - it opened in 1993 - it is not handicapped accessible from street level, but there are lifts for cross-platform transfers. The station is surrounded by mostly apartment buildings but the Pimenta Palace branch of the Museu de Lisboa is within walking distance. It is also the closest station to the massive Estádio José Alvalade where Sporting Clube de Portugal plays their matches. On the Linha Amarela (Yellow line), it is between Quinta das Conchas (towards Odivelas) and Cidade Universitária (towards Rato). On the Linha Verde (Green line), it is between Telheiras (the end of the line) and Alvalade (towards Cais do Sodré). There are the usual automated ticket vending machines and turnstiles here. However, as with most of our experience around the city, anyone we had to ask help from was quite pleasant and willing to help. The station was relatively clean & easy to navigate. With only two lines, and being towards the end of them, it wasn't too hard to figure out which way we had to go to get down into the heart of the city.

The station was refurbished in 1995. If you're staying at the Doubletree by Hilton - Fontana Park hotel, this is one of the closest Metro stations, as it is only a short walk away (Under 300 meters), although Saldanha (one stop away on the yellow line) provides a connection onto the Red line so might be a better option if heading to the Airport. It is located on the Yellow Line only. The Lisbon Metro seemed straightforward to navigate between lines and in stations. Ticket machines have an English language option. The pricing is reasonable, costing €1.80 for unlimited use of the metro within one hour, however, you must also purchase the "navegante card" for 50 cents, this can be re-loaded, but with it only being a tiny bit of paper, it is easy to damage or misplace, and the cost does add up if you keep leaving it behind. The Lisbon Metro as a whole is unique and many of the stations have interesting artwork which can be a tourist attraction in its own right. At Picoas, the platforms were a little dark, but they still felt pleasant due to the artwork, there was also a small number of seats while waiting for the trains to arrive.

An automated ticket vending machine will sell a ticket and yes, it does have an "English" button so I could understand the prompts for "one-way" or "return" and "where are you headed." There were conductors checking tickets on both of my journeys so I wouldn't recommend trying to ride without a ticket. This is a simple above ground station with minimal cover from the elements. If it's raining, you're getting wet. The station has two tracks with a small waiting area building (it was closed and boarded up this morning) and a pedestrian overpass. There are a bench or two but that's all. On Av. 24 de Julho, you can expect regular tram and bus service. Across the way is Calçada Ribeiro Santos and there are local buses there too. It is one of the oldest stations on the Lisbon network, having opened in 1959. It is an underground station and is surprisingly handicapped accessible. At the street level, look for the lift station. I couldn't find it. That would have been helpful for me with my big suitcase today. Instead, I lugged it down the stairs. The ticketing concourse has the usual automated vending machines (my 24 hour ticket hasn't expired yet!) and turnstiles. On the Yellow line, it is between Campo Pequeno (towards Odivelas and Picoas (towards Rato). And on the Red Line, it is between São Sebastião (the next station is the end of the line) and Alameda (towards Aeroporto). Signage was good enough that I did not get lost or on the wrong platform. I do agree with other reviews that the lift was hard to find, and I too had to carry my large suitcase down the stairs on my way to the Airport. 3*

Since we have been to Lisbon, Portugal many times, we decided to take a local train to Cascais. What a beautiful city. Ambiance - Local train, not good or bad. Not busy. Not clean, but also not dirty. On time. Service - Had a hard time trying to buy our tickets as the machines were NOT in English. And struggled using Google Translate while underground. The people around us were too busy to help us. Finally, we went to the cafe to ask for help. The owner sold us a one day pass rather than a round trip pass... Since we had the more expensive pass (double the price rather than round trip tickets) we decided to make an extra stop at Belem to get our $$ worth. Then when we got back, we found these two tourist girls also struggling to buy their train tickets, so we gave them ours as we were trying to pay it forward. Glad the tickets can get more use. I do not think they were trying to rip us off, but there was a language barrier. We appreciated the help. Price - Bought a one day pass. I think we paid approximately $8 US for each ticket. On the green line, the next station is Baixa-Chiado towards Telheiras. The metro station is completely handicapped accessible with lifts and escalators between the street level and platform level. There are automated ticket vending machines for the metro. I was here to catch the ferry, which of course is at street level. Separate vending machines for ferry tickets and a clear display indicating not only how long until the next ferry departs, the gate (there are three gates) and what percentage full. Purchasing the ferry ticket was easy (only €1.80 including the €0.50 for a new Viagem card) and quick. I was able to buy my ticket at 16:35, scan it and still board the 16:40 ferry to Cacilhas. There are lots of ticket machines at this particular station, and there is a sign right behind them explaining the tickets in English, there weren't too many staff members offering assistance, I only noticed one employee who seemed very busy dealing with tourists. The main entrance/exit to the station is right outside Humberto Delgado Airport, so it's easy to access the Terminal from here, it is also a short walk to the shuttle bus if you're unlucky enough to be travelling from Terminal 2. I didn't notice any elevators inside the station, but the escalators are easy to find and follow up to the top, and shouldn't be too difficult to manage with a suitcase. There is a lot of empty space in the station, in one of the halls, there was a stand selling cheap tacky souvenirs, which would probably only be useful as a last-minute gift if you're heading to the Airport and have forgotten to get something for someone back home. The art around the station was amusing, with caricatures all over the walls. The Red Line overall is one of the best on the network for station art, so be sure to keep an eye out on your journey. 3* - Decent metro station serving the Airport, no worse or better than any other Airport but certainly useful.

Your first ride is an extra €1 for the reloadable card which you can keep using throughout your time in Lisbon. After that, €1.50 per ride and if you're planning on riding a couple of times, it's best to buy the 24 hour pass. And unlike some cities, it's not "until the end of the day" but is actually for 24 hours from the first time you activate. That's a huge money and hassle saver! The pass works on the subway, the trams and the buses. Lisbon has four color coded lines that each meet and cross over. Here at the airport, you're at the terminus of the red line, which in Portuguese is the Linha Vermelha. From Aeroporto, it connects with the green (Verde), yellow (Amarela) and terminates at San Sebastiao where it meets the blue (Azul) line. The station is step free but the elevators are not easy to find. The station has two tracks with side platforms. The subway was only extended to the airport in 2012, replacing the Aerobus service. The station has an automated ticket kiosk and terminal but hopefully, you bought a round trip when you left Lisbon so you don't have to deal with that. For my departure, I scanned my Viagem card, read the departure board and get on my train in less than a minute. We took the Lisbon-Sintra train line & followed the crowds walking:10 to the historic center of town. There were buses, taxis and Tuktuks picking up passengers. We passed art on display & crafts people selling their wares. The station's main building dates from 1887. But it's worth going inside the station, as it's beautifully covered in tiles and includes a tourist office. It also has a ticket office and a ticket machine. We accessed the train platforms can also be done through the station.
