I've been to Jay Henges Shooting Range several times, and until yesterday I would have highly…read morerecommended it. The pricing is great ($5 per hour per lane), and in the past I found the staff helpful, though very rule-oriented, which is understandable at a shooting range. Yesterday, however, was a completely different experience. It was my 19 year old daughter's first time shooting a gun, and she was already very anxious. Unfortunately, what should have been a positive introduction turned into a stressful and upsetting experience due entirely to one staff member. When we arrived, we rented two lanes -- one for my daughter and me, and one for my minor son (16) and an adult male friend. Everyone except my daughter had been there before. When we got to the lanes, staff member Bruce began questioning us. I explained that it was my daughter's first time and that she might need some extra help because she was nervous. Instead of being supportive, Bruce immediately became aggressive and started yelling. He then went over to my son's lane and escalated further, getting into my minor son's face. The adult male with us asked him to please back up and be respectful. Bruce responded by getting into the adult's face and yelling even louder. We asked to speak with a supervisor. Bruce followed my friend to the office and continued invading his personal space until the supervisor finally told Bruce to back up. By that point, my friend was understandably upset and chose not to continue shooting. My son shot a few rounds, but the situation had already soured the experience. Thankfully, another staff member later helped my daughter calmly and respectfully, and she was able to learn how to shoot for the first time in a supportive environment. That staff member was professional and deserves recognition. It's extremely unfortunate because prior to this visit I would have given this range five stars and praised the staff. One person completely changed that. For a new shooter -- especially a young, anxious one -- being yelled at and treated aggressively is unacceptable. Be aware of who is working when you visit. Our experience would have been entirely different had we not encountered Bruce.

great range if you have a rifle. you can't beat the price. I will come back for sure.read more

Full club house with bar and kitchen including twice monthly Friday fish frys, 6 Trap fields (open to the public), 2 stocked fishing lakes, brand new 20-lane covered rifle/pistol range (members and guests only), archery and a pro shop--ALL for the astoundingly low membership dues of $125 a year, family included. Need I say more? Okay, let me mention that the Thursday League Night burgers, fries and deep-fried mushrooms are delicious! EGC has the claim of being the oldest continuously chartered gun club in the USA (since 1879). Whether there's a private club somewhere in the original 13 colonies that can beat that claim, I'm not sure, nor do I care. EGC has none of the pretentiousness that usually accompanies a "private club". In fact, they welcome the public on weekends and guests of members are always welcome. A "round" of trap costs about $5 for non-members which includes your 25 clay birdies. Ammo available for sale or bring your own--(shot heavier than 7.5 prohibited). Hours: Saturday: Noon - 5 p.m. fun shooting open to the public Sunday: Noon - 5 p.m. fun shooting open to the public Thursday: 10 a.m. - 10 p.m -- League competition on Thursdays begins @ 7 p.m. (year-round) All other time, you are welcome to use the two lakes for fishing. There is an additional $20 per year fee if you're using non-powered boat. Membership gets you a key to the front gate which allows you to fish on any non-shooting day at your leisure (license required). Please lock the gate behind you when you enter! Honestly, you wouldn't believe all the amenities this club offers, so please check it out for yourselves: http://edwardsvillegunclub.org/ Whether you're a fan of the shooting sports, a beginner, novice, seasoned pro, or just curious, EGC offers fun, fellowship, family atmosphere and great eats!

We practiced and got familiar with the handguns with the help of a teamember who was very patient and helpful. He made us girls feel very welcome, safe and comfortable. The staff at the front desk were also friendly and helpful. We worked up an appetite after shooting so we ate at the BBQ joint adjoined. We were lucky enough to be able to sit outside in the beautiful weather. The ribs had so much flavor they didn't even need sauce. The green beans also had lots of flavor and i can almost never pass up sweet potato fries especially if they are waffle cut! We stayed past the time the kitchen closed and as we were catching up told the workers we would get out of their hair but they insisted that we did not have to leave and were not keeping them. We found that to be extremely kind and will definitely make it by again sometime.

You will need your own ear/eye protection but if you don't have you can buy there. They also have an instruction course for $25 where the instructor will walk you through how to use the different guns. We did that as it was our first time either of us had shot a pistol. 10/10 would recommend this if it's your first time, though it will be a bit hard to hear since it happens down at the shooting range. It's $10 for the gun which you can switch out continuously, and then just paying for ammo after that. Overall good price and service, would come here again!

When I signed up for this course, I didn't have any idea what to expect. I have not shot a gun…read moresince my time in the service in the Viet Nam era 1970s, and I am more than a little nervous about having one. My wife made me take the course because she is concerned that, as a club musician, I am an easy target. After all, I am the last person on the street (usually downtown or in Soulard), just got paid, and am carrying valuable amplifiers and other easily pawnable equipment. After all, my $1,200 amp will easily pawn for $25 anywhere by some douchebag meth head. So I purchased a handgun (9mm Glock 43) and took the class. It was located in a pretty run-down American Legion Hall in Maryland Heights, and was taught by an older gentleman, Dennis, who is a certified NRA instructor. At first, this made me more concerned because I am not a supporter of the NRA. He said that he was actually the youngest member of this AL post. He was really knowledgeable about all things gun-related. He is a veteran, experienced hunter, and an excellent instructor. The classroom portion of the course took 6 hours, and they actually flew by. There were only 6 students, and everyone was polite, interested, and participated in all the exercises and discussions, which covered everything from beginner (me) to advanced gun-owning. I truly learned a lot, from how to properly handle the pistol, to how to actually carry a concealed weapon, important legalities, and various scenarios and how they can play out in real life situations. Since there is no firearms range on the premises, we then caravanned to the Gateway Gun Club, where we shot 20 rounds in practice, then another 20 rounds, of which 15 must hit the target. Dennis was there supervising, and ensuring that each of us were safe and skilled enough to pass the shooting portion of the course. It would have been nice if the AL Hall would have had a range, but I really have no complaints at all. He helped me refine my grip and I put all 20 rounds in the silhouette, with 3 actually hitting the bullseye! My only real complaint is that once I completed the course, I had to take my paperwork to the St. Louis County Police Department in Clayton, which is currently like navigating through an obstacle course of barricades and narrowed streets. Now I just have to wait several weeks for approval and then go back there to pick up my official card. Cost was $85 for the course and $90 to the Police Dept. I appreciate everything I learned and may go back for the advanced course.

They showed me a rifle once I provided my State ID and badge. But when I wanted to purchase the rile they asked me if I had "arresting rights" outside of the institution in which I didn't. So they decided I couldn't purchase the rifle. . . But the law is plain on its language of Illinois Dept of Corrections being able to purchase a semi-automatic rifle. Under Peace and Qualified Law Enforcement Officers. "Those section has also been amended to include Correctional Officers in Illinois, whether they be State or County". So for a gun business to pick and choose who gets to purchase by their standards an not by the standards of the law, let me know this business does not respect American citizens, the Illinois Laws and the Federal 2nd Amendment rights of an American Citizen. I will not patronize this business ever again. I drove to another gun shop that sold me the rifle with no problems whatsoever.
