The prices are not that good at all. I usual go up to the garment district but I was running late so I came here. They have a large variety of basic fabric but the price was almost $2 ro $3 more than places I normally shop. I ask the guy if that was due to location and after covid...he said yes. Sad case but not surprising in these times, they must be struggling. If you can spare the extra bucks support your local fabric store. Good luck to them!! read more

Yet another place I have to cross off my list of businesses that waste your time and energy not updating their f*cking hours on Yelp. It's literally noth that hard. Sick of the unprofessionalism and the huge middle finger to the consumer. It's every place now, I wanna support these smaller businesses but they screw your over just as much as the big businesses. I couldn't agree with the other Yelpers more..this place really is a hidden gem! I was looking for a discount fabric store because high prices don't fit my budget, and lo and behold I found Trumart. Yes, it is packed to the gills and can barely fit 5 people in the store, BUT it's worth it! The absolute best part of this little shop is that between the two front doors is a space where most fabrics are only 2.50$ a yard, and 2.00$ a yard if you buy 10 yards! How can you say no to that?? The man there is very helpful and doesn't seem to mind shoppers on a budget. I didn't feel pressure to buy anything like I do at some of the higher end fabric stores. He let us look around by ourselves, but was available every time we needed help or had questions. I am giving it five stars, it is a cute little place with fabric rolls on top of fabric rolls. They have bins outside with fabric that are on sale from $1.00 to $5.00. There was only one guy there but he was nice and helpful. I bought some cotton fabrics to make masks with and it was $6.00 a yard. read more

New to sewing and a blogger recommended this location. I purchased what I was told was silk. Was told oh yeah we did a burn test it's not polyester. My intuition was saying take a swatch and confirm. Trumart is one of the best fabric stores in the city hands down. During my time at Parsons, I'm sure more than half my projects (including my senior thesis collection) were made from materials I bought from Trumart. It's a great place to get cheaper synthetic fabrics for toiles but they also carry nicer fabrics like wool and silk for final projects. They're the only fabric store open on a Sunday (Because we all have those last minute emergencies right before a Monday morning class) and the staff is incredibly helpful and they offer a 10% student discount. There was once an emergency when I came in on a Friday and forgot my wallet and couldn't wait till Sunday to buy my fabric, but because I was regular customer they let me take the fabric and come in Sunday to pay. It was one of kindest gestures I've experienced in the city so huge shout to Trumart! read more

This is one of those tucked away hidden NYC gems, the kind that are sadly disappearing from our city. This place is still here though and you should stop in, even if you don't need fabrics. It's such a cool store albeit tight inside, but they have a huge array of fabrics for all sorts of applications- fine art, costume making, upholstery, shades, etc. The staff are extremely nice and they speak 4 languages, so they're quite diverse in their ability to help you. I bought the generic fleece-like fabric for a craft project and it was $8 a yard (prices vary by fabric). *** THEY DO STUDENT DISCOUNTS (I think it's $1 off a yard). I bought half a yard of each color and ended up paying $3.50 a color instead of $4. I went to Trumart last week to look for fabrics to make a skirt for a sewing class. There was a middle aged woman, a teenager and a preteen. I walked into the store and no one offered assistance. There was an overwhelming array of choices and I needed assistance to find what I needed. When I asked for help and described what I was looking for, the preteen was sent to help me. it's cheap and floor to ceiling FULL of stuff. lots of variety for a store this small- african prints, crazy spandex, quality suiting, craft felt... even batting. you name it, they will pull it out from some crevasse for you. it's hard to move around in the cramped space, but i like rummaging through everything when i have a half hour free. i always find something weird, interesting, or even whatever it was i actually really needed when i walked in. the guy is okay and gives swatches out cheerfully. his grandfather is also always there; usually he sits silently but when he talks you realize that he actually knows where everything is hidden and what it is made out of. read more
