Service is top tier, the employees are all helpful and communicate effectively. You won't get better service elsewhere in the Garment District. Pricing is mostly as expected, you will pay a few dollars extra per yard as opposed to some of the discount fabric stores. Personally, spending the few extra bucks at B&J is always worth the trade-off because of the smooth and well-designed experience in the store. They stock high-quality materials and I have never been disappointed in something I've purchased. This store goes the extra mile and will provide you with up to (I believe) 15 free samples per visit. Their inventory is extremely well-managed and they put a bar code/ID sticker on each fabric sample they give you. This way, the process is extremely fast when going back to the store to make purchases. The employees can simply scan the sticker from any of the samples and cut you a piece to length. The whole process seldom takes more than 5 minutes once you have decided what you want. This beats the discount stores 10/10 times in my book, because I save so much time that it warrants the slightly higher price. I have not written any reviews for fabric stores because, frankly, my experience has been nearly identical at all of them EXCEPT for B&J. Along with my fabric purchases, I was looking for bag/backpack hardware today which they do not really carry. One of the employees (did not get her name) was kind enough to hand me a printed list of other stores and recommend a couple that would have what I was looking for. She was absolutely spot on, and I got everything else I needed from the other store. I was very happy with my B&J Fabrics experience for these reasons (online purchase): No flashy/immodest/offensive images on front page or fabric pages of website Wonderful selection, with sufficient pictures and description of each fabric Great quality for the price/ great price for the quality Adequately sized samples (I ordered 4 sets of samples, about 20 samples total) were a reasonable price and shipped at a reasonable rate and time My order was properly packed and delivered intact in a reasonable amount of time. I was led to a clearance selection which turned out to be perfect size and price considering I didn't need a very large piece. After returning home with my selection and realizing that the cut had some imperfections that I didn't realize at first I was able to bring the piece back and exchange it with no problems. Both times the staff were very helpful and pleasant. All in all, I found great material at a great price. I definitely have this place mind if I need anything more. read more

Nice selection of both everyday and couture fabrics. I've never left without finding something suitable for a project. I've not been there for a while and the store procedure has completely changed: one can no longer browse among the bolts of fabric. (Apparently "swatchers" got too aggressive. Like many retail stores these days they have to take measures to protect their inventory.) There are instead samples of approximately half a square yard of each fabric attached to plastic skirt hangers. One takes the sample to an attendant who will then retrieve the bolt and make the requested cut. I'd go again as I've had mixed results shopping for fabric anywhere online when the expected shade and weight didn't match reality. What I wish B&J would to is post some kind of directory indicating the locations of types of fabric samples. If I'm looking for cotton shirting I don't want to waste time going down an aisle of nothing but couture evening samples. read more

B&J is a good source to consider when searching for fabric. As with any goods, they are sourced from many other countries and one must be savvy. I have seen good wool crepe and lousy wool crepe there that looked like it was not Italy made. It was already pilling. Understanding wool is a delicate fabric to work and if the finished product looks like used clothing it was a bad quality fabric. Silks are wonderful in my experience. I always see what they have before making a final selection. and I have enjoyed their selections of faux fur. Yes, they are a legit fabric store. read more

Was looking for a strongly textured linen in blue and after visiting at least 5 other shops, including Mood, found what I was looking for here. B and J isn't cheap--paid $33/yard for my upholstery weight fabric--but it is inspirational. They have a unique extensive collection of cotton prints hanging in samples on one side, including a range of traditional Japanese designs and Ikat weaves that I haven't seen elsewhere. Sort of the Met Museum of fabrics As for attitude, the young salesperson who cut the fabric for me was friendly and pleasant. Can't say how the staff would have responded if I'd asked for help finding the fabric; will say that, unlike Mood, no one asked me if I needed help.But that was fine because it was a pleasure just to browse, the place isn't all that big and the sections are well labeled. read more

I've been a B&J customer for both my own personal projects as well as for various employers over the last 16+ years. It is a veritable wonderland of luxurious, inspiring, and unique, albeit quite expensive, fabrics. I don't go as often these days, but when I really need that something special, I'll pop by. You will notice I gave B&J 4 stars. That's for the fine selection of fabrics. I do have one humble request of the staff - I'm sure they must have to meet some kind of quota to retain whatever catty fashionista status they have managed to obtain during their time at the illustrious cutting tables, but maybe they can wait until the patron has fully completed their transaction and exited the shop before loudly making fun of them? They can be a bit snooty at first but if they get a chance to know you they are very nice. They have great selections of silks and wools. They carry a bit of everything, but mostly solids and conservative prints. The store is very organized compared to lots of fabric stores. Most of them are pure threaded chaos. Everything here is on headers. The system takes a while to get used to, so it's best to walk around a dozen times and just memorize it all. I work with them professionally and really enjoy it. This fabric store has got some of the rudest workers there. Yes, I'll say that their fabrics are high quality and really great. However, the service you get from here isn't close to helpful or good. Maybe 2/8 that were working there were helpful, patient, and gave me my material as quick as possible. There were two ladies in particular who just really spoiled the whole vibe from this place. Getting yelled at by one of them and given attitude by the other one really brought this place from a 100-0 real quick. As a student who is beginning to get familiar with the industry and trying to learn new things, this place really made me feel like snotty people like the workers was the attitude you needed to have in that particular industry which is completely untrue. The worker that yelled at me made me feel stupid for asking questions on information I was unsure of and wanted more clarification with. Apart from that, she also talked to be real slow as if I didn't know how to speak. She had no patience whatsoever and there weren't even a lot of customers there to begin with. Maybe it was because I interrupted her phone break at her computer but that certainly isn't the way you treat someone who just wants to know more. After yelling at me, she turned her back and walked to her coworker talking smack about me because there was a word I didn't understand the definition. I realized that she was speaking bad about me because she turned around about 3 times at me and having her coworker glance and laugh in front of my face. The lady with the attitude literally didn't even look up after I asked if she could help me out. She said "I'm helping someone right now so go ask someone else over there who isn't busy." At the end, I realized she wasn't even helping anyone. She just didn't want to assist me. If you're looking to shop for expensive and high end fabrics, shop here. OMG, who needs groceries, really if you are single you can make a big pot of soup and live off that for a while because you have spent your money on 3 yds of fabulously beautiful black and white French silk chiffon or ultra cool Japanese cotton with an edgy graphic print...simply heaven! I lovvvvvvvvvvve B&J Fabrics so very much! Granted, they are a bit pricey, but they are also one of the Fabric Trifecta here in the city (B&J, NY Elegant and Mood). I always go to them first when I need to get sensational yardage that can be found nowhere else! Their higher prices are warranted though when it comes to phenomenal selection supplemented by the TOP customer service in the city. They practically have a branded service, in that most of the employees there have worked at B&J for at least 10 years and they know every inch of the store's offerings, and the business is family-owned AND operated! Walking in is like seeing such a sharp, familiar cast of the fabric geniuses of NY! Everyone also has a distinct personality too, which I love, and my favorites are Nate and Tony, but they really all are encyclopedic in their knowledge of the store. Walked in looking for a crepe fabric, but wanted to see the whole selection before choosing one to get the right look... I kindly asked a woman working there where I could find their crepe selections. She asked me to be more specific about fabric content, which I was still debating and she took this as incompetence on my part. She asked me if I was in school, to which I told her I was interning, and she had the nerve to shake her head and scoff "How did you get this job if you know nothing about fabric?!" Floored! Eventually, after a few more head shakes, she said "They're on the other side." I left... Mood around the corner was 5x busier and 100x more willing to offer their friendly help. My first experience here was a great one. I arrived a few minutes before the store was actually open, but they let come in and browse anyway. At first glance the store seemed pretty organized and the staff was friendly enough. They have a wide range of fabrics at different price points. I was reliving my fashion school years this morning.. hopping from one fabric store to the next in the Garment District, on the hunt for a bright red vinyl. Now that I work in television more than I do fashion, a sense of college nostalgia passed over me. Speaking of work and why I was prancing all over 40th Street and 7th Ave.. I'll be leaving for Cannes this Friday for a media & television market. At such events, we have a booth where we meet with clients over a 4 day period and the walls they put up, are a total eyesore -- awful melamine-coated partitioned walls. As if anyone could take us seriously with ugly walls.. we are in entertainment, after all. More to do with visual stimulation than practicality. B & J was my third stop of the morning and it was also my favourite. The space is open, clean, and well organized by fabric type, along rows and rows of endless racks. The fabrics hanging on these racks are sample materials -- so you can feel for texture, hang for drape, and view the fabrics in a different light. Today, I was doing research (pricing, colours available, and different types of vinyl to take back to the office) so all I needed were sample swatches. I brought my materials over for sampling where the efficient salesperson cut and swatched (labeled each sample with price per yard, assigned code, and length) everything for me! Had I wanted to make a purchase right then and there, she would have brought the roll of fabric over, based on the assigned code, from the tall shelves of endless colour. Brilliant! I like systems that work. In general, the fabrics are a little more expensive than other fabric stores in the city, but I think they are priced accordingly. Italian wool, silks, and cashmere don't come cheap. They also have beautiful chantilly lace, brocade, chenille, tweed, linen, etc. in all sorts of colours and prints. A part of me is longing to be in fashion school again.. if only for the sequins and chantilly lace. read more

Being a design student, I have to carefully consider that fabrics I want to use. I love B & J because they have a huge range of beautiful fabrics and its so organized and well lit (unlike Mood). The only reason it gets just three stars is for its bogus and difficult to deal with student swatching policy. The only time they'll swatch for students is 8am-9am on weekdays and 9am-10am on saturdays. I have to wake up at 6am to commute from Queens to get fabrics swatches?! Sheesh. You have to pick your max of 14 swatches and THEN get someone to help you. It's understandable why they do this (they'd be swamped by students at reg hours), but by the time I've picked all of them out, I forgot all the ones I wanted! Bummer, right? All in all, the trouble I have to go through to get their fabrics is worth it because of the wonderful quality. They even swatch faux furs! Woo hoo!! read more

There is something charming/chaotic about crawling through rolls of fabric like in a 19th century Indian market, but it's incredibly refreshing to see a place so clean, spacious, well-lit and well organized. It's on 2nd floor. A lot of the fabric is hung on hangers so you can touch, feel the hang, view the nap in different lighting. Then find the roll of fabric that it came from based on a letter/number code. Prices are clearly marked, but there is nothing less than $15/yard. Not the place to go to save money. Garment district stores are overwhelming, more so (to me) than regular fabric stores which are already a lot to take in. Bindles, bundles, stacks of fabrics. If you don't know exactly what you're doing, it can be intimidating. I walked in to get fabric for halloween costumes for my children. No high fashion needs or know-how here. A couple of sidelong looks, but when I asked for help, I got help. My fabric buddy walked with me while I showed him what I was making, talked about potential fabrics, gave me tips on how to make some of the construction easier. read more

I've been meaning to write this for years. Today I remembered I may have to come here and I thought, ugh, those nasty people. I decided to have a look on yelp to see what other people's experience has been. I have been coming here for over 15+ years off and on. I am a professional working fashion designer here in NYC. I do not come to this store often so I know they do not recognize me. ~ I love all their fabrics and have always known there are marked up 2-3x normal prices. It is what it is. However, the overall staff here are beyond rude. It's unexceptable customer service. I am a friendly person who smiles and laughs easily but these fabric bitc*es are beyond. They all have sticks up their as*** for no reason. They are all snippy, miserable and unhappy. I do not have this type of problem with any of the many textile companies or fabric stores staff I go to in the GC like this. Most of them know me by name and we all have a big smiles when we see each other. Not this B & J staff. All I can gather is "The fish rots from the head down." perhaps. read more
