    The bike

Visitor here. Opted for the 24-hour explorer pass (or something like that) which let us check bikes out for an hour at a time for 24 hours. There were a few bike share locations right near our Airbnb. We got bikes and rode downtown, to the capitol, then to the waterfront. We checked our bikes back at a waterfront station, then immediately got them back to start our clock at 0 again. Explored the waterfront and made it to the springs! The bikes themselves are ok. 3 speed with adjustable seat. As others have noted, the brakes vary per bicycle but we never had problems. My first bike was fine but the 2nd one had worse brakes and learned a bit to the left. 2 of us have road bikes and 2 of us don't bike so we had the range of experienced bikerness in our group. Would definitely recommend for visitors looking to ride along the river. Biking downtown was a bit scary, since we didn't have helmets. There were bike lanes and drivers were really nice, but still was a bit uncomfortable knowing I didn't have a helmet and was on an unfamiliar bike.

How are people confused by this?!?

Horrible customer service. Do not sign up if you are a UT student, it is totally not worth it and they will bill you.

A convenient and cheap way to explore the city. Large baskets on the bike made it useful to go site seeing and shopping all day.

We tried a bike share in DC a couple of years ago and it was honestly a pain in the ass with lots of glitches.

They tuned my road bike a few years ago for a triathlon and did a great job. I recently got a new bike and was very excited to ride it but wanted to do a safety bike check first. They were busy and so was everyone else so I ended up going to another store that was able to squeeze me in for a bike check for $100. This other store did a fine job checking my bike but my shifters were still messed up when I rode it. Obviously my fault for being impatient. This other store was going to charge me another $60-$90 to fix the shifters and another $200-$300 for new tires, including installation. So I ended up going back to Clown dog - and should've waited and gone there instead to begin with. They did a great job consulting me on tire options and have access to order a variety of tires and it cost me only a fraction for installation and to tune my shifters. Solid. I'm a happy customer and they have become our go to store for all of our bike needs. This place is a gem.

Mellow Johnny's was cool, modern & bright. This full service bike shop has quite literally everything you need. My friend bought energy supplements for a non-cycling event. Additionally, the staff was polite & answered all of my questions. Mellow Johnny's has a nice selection of bikes for sale , apparel, & other supplies. They were sold out of the more common sizes on the discount rack. However, I was pleased with my purchase. Prices are in line with what I pay in the Washington DC area. I would've rented a bike & jumped on a group ride if I felt better. Welp until next time!!

I let the sales person know the model and size I wanted and let him know I was interested in accessories, as well. He was terse and seemed irritated I called as he informed me that it wouldn't arrive until October (this is June). {2020} I asked if I could get it any sooner or if I needed to preorder. He, in a very frustrated tone and manner, told me that I could call other stores around the country and see if they would be willing to ship it to me. I tried to explain that I was asking so that I could find out the procedure to buy and was trying to find out if I needed to pay for it in advance or pre-order it. After he let me know I wouldn't need to pre-pay; I started to ask another question with the intention of seeing if he had suggestions on other bikes that might work for me. When he interrupted me again with frustration in his voice, I hung up on him. Maybe he misunderstood the phrase "Keep Austin Weird" as "Keep Austin Wired". I'm guessing there are no commission sales. Either way, I'm pretty certain I can locate the model I am looking for elsewhere... Even if it's in October, another city, or an online retailer. Update: {2025} I ended up calling a store in San Marcos next. They were amazing and I ended up buying several bikes from them over the next 5 years, whil sending all my friends from Austin to them. I was talked into going to Mellow Johnnies a few months back to get some supplies to help a friend with his bike. At least they maintained some consistency, their service was terrible. Whether you are a noob or an experienced rider, I'd find another shop.

I'd been using Uber for most of my trip to get from one session to the next, and have had nothing but positive experiences. In this case, I needed to get from the Hyatt Regency to the Long Center, an 8 minute walk according to Google Maps. I was in a rush to make my next session, checked Uber and the fare estimate was $3. I saw a Pedicab rider nearby and figured I'd give them a go, instead of waiting for a car, since the venue was so close and I hadn't used them before. When I jumped in the Pedicab, there were signs that clearly state that the riders work for tips only. The rider did not say hello, mention anything about rates (since the 'tips only' signs are clearly marked), was not friendly and started blasting obnoxiously loud music while I was trying to make a quick call to a colleague. When we arrived - less than 5 minutes later, most of which was spent waiting on a traffic light - I gave the rider $5 (more than Uber estimated, and what I thought was fair) and said thank you. He proceeded to tell me how, "I normally charge $10 for that ride" in which, confused, I pointed to the sign that clearly states the rider works for tips only. He said, "Yeah, but I charge $10." Obviously this is a violation of Pedicab policy, or he would have given me the rate BEFORE I got in, and not AFTER we'd already arrived. Still confused, I told him that I could have used Uber for $3, to which he rudely and loudly responded in front of other convention goers, "Yeah, well I'm not Uber, I charge $10!"...again, despite the clearly marked 'tips only' policy. He was absolutely right. He was not Uber. He was slower. Ruder. Did not have AC. And, unlike Uber - where their drivers actually care about the perception and reputation of the company that they're representing - he was unprofessional and dishonest...so it makes perfect sense that he should charge over 3x what a car service charges. How silly of me to think otherwise. He then went on to use profanity and insult the $5 I gave him...until he saw me using my phone to take a photo of him and the number to call for complaints, to which he quickly rode away like a coward who did not want to be held accountable for literally demanding money from riders and clearly violating Pedicab policies. He was riding cart #30, at roughly 4:30 pm on March 14, 2015. If the Pedicab company cares about the way their riders treat customers while representing them, they can contact me and I can furnish a photograph of this class act and model employee who should immediately be fired / not permitted to represent the company. I will say, however, that other Pedicab riders that I have encountered in Austin have been VERY friendly and polite, which is why I decided to use them in this instance. But this experience left me with a massively negative impression. I understand that the riders who cart people around are physically exerting themselves; but to claim that that service is worth 3x more than sitting in a comfortable and air conditioned car? And yelling at customers, demanding more money? Please.
