I was really pleased with Metropolis Vintage, mostly because they had a ascot neck tie. I have been searching everywhere for an ascot as I intend to bring them back into the fashion forefront. they are a mens silk tie, that Fred used to wear in Scooby doo. Let me tell you, ascots really cool, and it's about time someone started thinking outside the box when it come down to mens neck fashions. I mean, one standard tie that migrates between thick and this is all there is. Oh, yeah.... a bowie. that only cool if you are a nerd or a republican. Since everybody hates republicans right now (correctly) you might get yourself cought in some kind a hate game. I also bought a vest that costs $175. I don't really want to talk to much about that, but it was from the 1920's. It's in good shape, and I was not able to leave the store without it. It's more money than I have ever spent on a single piece of clothes. It really belongs in a museum or something, but it's in my closet. Screw you museums! read more

The store has no price tags. I was interested in a necklace and asked for the price. It was outrageous. My husband went back a week later asked the same question and was quoted 2/3 lower price. So he bought it for me. Ladies send your hubbies in for a decent price. It's ls also super cowered and difficult to move around. She does have some cool things, but you'll pay too much. read more

Whenever I come to the store, I always see not only beautiful vintage clothes, but pieces that carry history, character, and charm. I guess because the owner knows how to select rare garments and accessories and likes to keep the spirit of timeless style alive in Albany. I know that running a vintage store is no small feat. It requires patience, vision, and a deep love for the past. To my mind the store is a part of our local tapestry. I love leather clothes, and the store always has a great collection. And the owner's approach is thoughtful, never harsh, and rooted in a deep love for the clothing you curate. She always helps each visitor find something that truly suits them. The owner of the shop is so rude for no reason. When my friends and I walked in we were greeted with a monotone attitude which doesn't really start off the experience well. When I noticed the hats on the wall I complimented them and the store owner gave her thanks. I continued and looked at the fur coats, I tried one on because I thought it was beautiful and the moment I slipped it on, the shop owner yelled at me from across the shop in an aggressive tone to take off the coat because I'm too big for it. Keep in mind I am a model/stylist with many years of retail experience and I have knowledge about clothes and their restrictions. I know my size and understand sizing on garments new and old. When I replied back that I do fit in the coat but I do admit that the sleeves were a bit short she proceeded to continue to tell me how I don't fit in said coat and after said "thats my opinion" and while I do respect the opinions of others, I believe that you shouldn't be giving your negative opinions to customers who enter the store and are looking to find something to buy. We were in the store no more than 5 minutes before the owner decided to verbally attack me from across the small shop. I can't even comment on the inventory because I didn't even have the chance. On google there are multiple reviews about the owner being a garbage person. It really feels like she has some homophobic ideologies and a deep love of the fur coats she's attempting to sell. (I understand the love of fur coats, I love my fur coats lol). Bottom line is the shop owner is rude and unless you want to be verbally abused and degraded while shopping then I don't recommend giving this place your time nor money. read more

I'm not one to leave a review but the owner was literally the most miserable person I've ever interacted with. So rude. Not at all welcoming. I was looking in the changing room (which is plastered with vintage posters) for maybe 30 seconds and she immediately accused my boyfriend and I of stealing on top of staring us down the entire time prior. I was nothing but nice and polite to her from start to finish but she needs to get a grip, I feel bad for the other reviewers who had to deal with her lmao! Woman working there was extremely rude, did not keep her eyes off my sister and I the whole time. There is cute stuff in there but everything was EXTREMELY crammed into a small area, making it so you need to touch everything you would like to see. My sister had 3 things in her hand ready to purchase and the woman made her set them down and basically accused her of taking the price tags off of a necklace (the price tags are little pieces of paper that could fall of very easily). That immediately made us uncomfortable so we left and she ended the experience with a sarcastic "well bye now". It looks like multiple people had the same experience, so a tip to the woman working there... spread out your items so customers do not have to touch. If I could give less than I would. I have been thrifting and shopping vintage my entire life. I was genuinely so excited to check this place out as I pass it everyday on my way to work. When I got there the shop owners attitude was just so disappointing. She gave my friend a tape measure for her waist after insisting that those jeans wouldn't fit her. She starred me down the entire time I was in the store and it just was so disappointing!!! She has some good stuff but you will be paying over 100+ for anything worth while. An absolutely repulsive experience. The owner would not take her eyes off of myself, my partner and friends as if we were planning to rob her store. She was rude and hateful. Very short with her answers and she spoke to us as if we were born yesterday and didn't know about vintage despite wearing rare, well recognized vintage into the store. Looks like many people have had the same experience as my girlfriend and I did. We admired the selection and wanted to make conversation with the owner, however she was absolutely the worst. She glared at us the whole time and when we tried to make conversation, she was dismissive and rude. I'm not sure that's a good business practice. Haha. We were about to spend our money on some coats and dresses but felt uncomfortable by the way we were treated and decided to take our business elsewhere. She runs estates sales so that's where she gets all her stuff, by being a grave robber. Absolutely shocked at how the owner spoke to myself and my partner, I have visited many antique stores in the upstate area and never once came across someone as blatantly dismissive and uninviting. I immediately felt profiled and shamed for even opening the door. I happily left when she told us we weren't allowed in her store, for a reason of we weren't 18. But we were, and could've shown ID. Also an age restriction wasn't posted online nor on a window or door. We happily left without a fuss because of how she stared us down as if we were criminal, and spoke so condescending. Honestly, lovely selection. I was driving by and was shocked I had never stopped there before! The prices are quite high, but there are lots of beautiful pieces. Some of the areas are difficult to get to because they're blocked off by piles of clothing. Annoying, but not horrible. The biggest downfall? The owner was NOR friendly whatsoever. Any questions I had, I felt like she just wanted me to leave. There was no warmth, only irritation. I've never been felt so unwanted in a store. Rude crude OWNER! Terrible woman who is lying through her teeth. Most of her stuff are from the 60's and she says they are from the 20's, so she can justify adding another 200 bucks on top of their real value. She can do that because most of her customers don't know any better, but take someone who knows and they will tell you. I admit I baught a couple of pieces from her, but that was after I looked around for 40 mins,and that's from someone who buys a lot :) Apprantly the show Broadwalk has a bunch of customs and stuff from her shop (she proudly displays a thank you note from someone associated with the show in her shop). I never leave yelp reviews but how rude the woman who presumably runs this business was to us truly made me feel so bad that we thought about it hours to come. Not only was she so rude, barking orders at us and following us obsessively like we were going to shoplift but she also kept insisting my friend wouldnt fit into a pair of shorts they wanted to try on (we can read the size tag? And they were actually too big on my friend?) she also was helping another woman pick out a minstrel??? Outfit the entire time we were there. Like for halloween?? She pulled up a news article about a prada doll that got discontinued because it looked like blackface and she said awwww I want one! So cute! We literaly could not believe what she was saying and i could not imagine giving her my money after how openly racist and inappropriate she was being on top of her just being straight up rude and unpleasant. I thought maybe we were overreacting until i checked this yelp page and realized many people had similar experiences. Literally would never recommend anyone going here. Terrible. Granted some of the clothing items were very cute and one of a kind for the most part, but the woman, who I assume owns the place, was so unbelievably rude and condescending. Not only did she only give snippy, one word answers to questions, but she not so subtly called me fat. For one, I am not a big girl what so ever, and little does she know I am a recovering anorexic. I really didn't appreciate the attitude and blatant rudeness. I was taken aback that a person, trying to uphold a business would insult her own customers. Also, as I stated before, some of the stuff there is very cute, but most of it is insanely overpriced. My friend and I went to this shop last week and I absolutely loved it. The owner Rose was so nice and very helpful. Her merchandise is beautiful and obviously specialty curated over a long time. As a business owner I understand how much work goes into having a business and this shop blew me away. I can't even imagine the hours and work that have gone into this specialty shop! It is absolutely full of a wide range of jewelry, hats, tops, bottoms, etc all unique, very vintage and well preserved. I can't wait to go back when I have lots of time to look at every piece. Our whole experience was a good one. There was even a discount rack outside that I found a gem of a shirt on for only $20. I bought a very special purchase the day of and even called to order more once home. I just could not stop thinking about these special items. Rose is so nice and obviously soooo hard working. Ok so I I understand that as a 2 young men we are not the usual clientele but we were genuinely interested in buying something until we meet the rudest person I have ever met. Immediately as we entered we were hostility asked if we were buying something(friendly advice: that's not the best way to encourage people to buy something). Then after looking around for a few minutes I wanted to take a picture of a cool hat, no big deal right? Boy was I wrong, she immediately told me that no pictures were allowed. This by itself is fine, we all have rules, even if they are arbitrary. But what really ticked me off was when my friend asked why this rule was in place her response was "reasons". Needless to say we left immediately after this. To the sales clerk I say this, we all hate our jobs or lives (I can't tell with her, probably both) at some point in ours lives but being a cantankerous ass-hat to everyone that walks in is no way to deal with it. The first time my friend and I went into Metropolis Vintage, we were awestruck by how many amazing pieces of vintage clothing and jewelry were in the store. The prices were pretty high for us (all the clothing hovered somewhere near-ish to $100), but there were a couple pretty decent sales. The treatment we received during our visit (and especially on our next visit), however, was appalling. We both felt very unwelcome and uncomfortable, as if we were being watched and about to be pounced on for touching something we weren't supposed to. The owner was not friendly, but perked up only slightly when she realized my friend was going to buy something. Our next visit was much, much worse. My friend called ahead to see if the owner would like to look through our vintage clothes that belonged to our mothers and grandmothers (circa 1950's to 1975) and see if she would like to purchase them from us. She said sure, and she was almost downright nice on the phone. When we got there, however, it was a completely different story. She rummaged through my friend's bag, throwing the clothes on the floor in a heap and then told my friend to put the clothes back in the bag herself because she didn't want any of them. She then looked through my friend's bag of jewelry and shoved a fistful of the jewelry back into a small jewelry box, almost crushing it all. She then proceed to lecture us for around 10 or 15 minutes, saying the clothing we brought her was not "real vintage," then accused us of bringing in our own clothes, as if we were trying to rip her off. She then offered me 3 dollars for my grandmother's embroidered shirt, which was no doubt going to be sold for 25 times more than that. I had never been so insulted in my life. read more

I just left Vintage Metropolis for the second time due to the rude treatment I received! It starts the minute you hit the door! I went the first time with my husband and we were made to feel so unwelcome we left. I was in the market for a vintage red hat and had spotted one in the window. She yelled at us the minute we stepped in that the place was a mess and to watch our step. And I do mean yelled! When we tried to make conversation her responses were so short and snappy with a rude tone that we immediately let! I went by today and spotted the red hat again and thought I'd give it another chance, maybe she was having an off day. Well, again after walking in, she ask what I wanted. I told her I was in a browsing mood and was just scouting out red hats. I again tried to make polite conversation and was met with one syllable replies. I started walking around, looking at hats, and opened a couple of the hat boxes to check them out. They were right on the sales floor so I thought they were for sale. Well, she came over to me and balled me out for going thru the boxes! They were for her use and she doesn't permit people to rummage thru them as they destroy them! I was so embarrassed! I explained they weren't in a stock room but on the floor so I thought they were fair game and I apologized. Well, she wouldn't let up! She repeated it twice more in a nasty tone! I don't think my own mother has ever talked to me that way! How did anyone manage to buy anything? I was clearly not wanted there. I told her I was interested in Victorian hats. She said she had them but I have to ask for them, she doesn't put them out. I told her I didn't want to trouble her any further and left. DON"T BOTHER GOING IN!!! I wonder if she is the owner? Horrible service! I was recently married and I had a 1950s style wedding. I popped in looking for inspiration and for dresses. A friend of mine came with me. I was informed by a rather plus-sized clerk that neither my friend nor me should even bother looking in the store because the dresses would not fit our figures. The shop owner (?) is markedly, undeniably rude to customers, whether she intends it or not. As soon as I walked in the door I was met with a strange remark which I brushed off and continued browsing. The prices are very high for the quality and rarity of the pieces, but the selection is quite impressive for the area - although I'm positive you'd find the same, if not better, by regularly visiting estate sales (assuming you don't buy online). The attitude of the shopkeeper is condescending at best, and just can't be overlooked despite the fact that it is one of the area's very few vintage clothing stores. Anyway, although I did not receive firsthand commentary about my weight/size, I did observe the owner making unprovoked size comments to a customer. I find this type of treatment very rude and unacceptable. I really wish that my experience here had been better because it would be wonderful to have a vintage retailer in such close proximity to me, but unfortunately, this visit proved to be very disappointing. read more

Visited this store today for the first time while in town visiting family. I've never seen such rude service from the owner herself. It started the minute we walked in the door with a 5 minute lecture on how coffee should never be in a store because that's how things get ruined and was soon followed by a scolding of my teenage niece who dared to touch a coat. I do have to say the woman who helped us was very nice. My sister asked if she was an owner and we were sad to learn it was Ms. Unfriendly. Nasty, vulgar, UNSTABLE owner! I wish I could give zero stars! This was THE #1 WORST store experience I've ever had in my entire life! I was in one day to browse, met the owner Rose, and mentioned that I had some items similar to ones in her store (clothing, jewelry, hats, and purses from the 1940s, and neat hippie clothes from when my Mom was in college), and had no idea they were so valuable (I was comparing to her prices). She said I should bring them in, and she'd buy anything she was interested in at a fair price, and advise me on the rest. Sounds good, right...? Wrong. Oh so very wrong. I brought the things in the very next day. Rose accused me of bringing her "fake things," and said these unique family items "weren't real." HUH...?! Apparently, she didn't remember who I was, and she straight-up accused me of lying about meeting her. She told me: "You're a presumptuous little b--ch, coming in here with your fake crap and trying to tell me that we've met and this was all my idea. You better get out of my store before I take you by your stupid ponytail and THROW you out!" OH. MY. LORD. I said, "I am gathering my things and going. If you changed your mind, just say so; there's no reason to insult me and my family's things, and especially no reason to swear at me and threaten me. This is totally inappropriate." She told me to "Go f--- yourself." She then watched me like a hawk while I packed my things back up, and warned me, "You better not put in anything extra, I have cameras inside and outside and I'll call the cops on you!" I got out as fast as I could. There is something seriously wrong with this lady. UPDATE: I did some research... My things ARE valuable, especially since they are such nice condition. I have enough nice things to remember family by, I wanted to pass these excess things on to happy new homes with vintage enthusiasts who appreciate nice things. Her vintage hats were crumpled up, faded, had ripped mesh, etc.; they looked like they came from the bargain bin at Salvation Army, and she was asking $98!!!! Mine are in perfect shape, carefully cared for and stored in their original hat boxes, and she told me they were "fake crap." Same with my unique WWII-era jewelry and awesome hippie shirts (which are so neat and unique they could have been used in 1960s/1970s movies). I suspect she buys stuff from thrift stores then jacks up the price. Between the owner's HORRIBLE attitude and ridiculous prices, it's no wonder the store is packed so full you can hardly move and there are never any customers. Do yourself and your wallet a favor and stay away from this horrible nasty person. read more

I also went in there today, not only to look for a coat but to check it out for the future film projects I have lined up. When I went to look at a rack of clothes, before I even touched a thing, this very unpleasant woman barked "No!!!" at me, not " those aren't for sale", just "No!!". Then when I asked if some of the clothing on the wall racks were for sale, she said yes, but wouldn't let me look at them or even hold them up for me, and said she doesn't take them down "Just for the hell of it!". I was there to buy, but after her hideous unkindness, I had to leave. Her rudeness was entirely unprovoked, and I don't know why she chose to be so nasty, and refuse to even try to help me. Visited this store the other day and literally fled the joint after 5 minutes! Overpriced thrift store offal punctuated by the occasional pearl. The most unpleasant, rude proprietor I've come across in years, who followed me around the phone booth sized store and, where she wasn't on my heels, a filthy little dust mop of a dog was. The one item for which I would have spent some shekels turned out not to be for sale (which annoys me in any store), as evidenced by the velociraptor-like pouncing of the owner the very second I placed a finger upon it. I'm an artist and photographer by trade and am always looking for unique and vintage items to feature in my work. I finally found the time to visit this store but, regardless of it's would-be offerings, I will never return. read more

After two visits to this shop, I have to draw the same conclusion: the owner is incredibly rude. I gave her a second chance, thinking I found her on an off day, but no, just as rude my second visit about a year later. She becomes irritated if you ask any questions, and seems to resent having you in her shop. Helping a customer is beneath her, I guess. The best part was when she looked out the window to see what kind of car I was driving, to help her "adjust" her prices. I was in the store today with my fiancé, looking for a few things for our wedding. The woman behind the counter didn't even acknowledge us walking in, despite my friendly "hello" when we arrived. I was looking at the wedding slips, and there was a garment bag, which was black. I unzipped about 2 inches of the bottom to peek at what was inside, and the woman shouts from the counter "EXCUSE ME! Definitely the best selection north of NYC and the location is easy to find with lots of parking. You can tell the owner has been doing this for a long time and some of the items I saw are one of a kind. This is the best vintage apparel around Albany and it rivals the stores in the city. Went to an estate sale over the weekend and would also give a "zero" star rating if possible. The estate sale started late, the items for sale were disorganized and not all items had prices leading to inconsistency and on the fly pricing by the cashier who is the rude proprietor, and any questions are met with complete rudeness and barked answers. Proprietor does not know what she is talking about relating to most items in terms of value, age, authenticity or performance. A buyer wanted a bit of a discount on the last day of the sale for a Garmin GPS and was knowledgeable about the item. He explained that it was missing a piece and she rudely said that he could, "get it on the internet" by way of not reducing the asking price. When he tried to patiently explain more, she rudely remarked that she'd rather donate it to charity than reduce the price. A woman who had a name tag on with "Metropolis" on the tag and who confirmed she was working the sale was asked about exchanging a non-working item purchased at the sale the day before for a totally different item that was the same price instead of asking for refund. She indicated no problem since the electronic item didn't work, just to let the cashier know about the exchange and arrange for pick up. Cashier is the proprietor and basically said too bad that the person with the name tag didn't actually work there, too bad the electronic didn't work, not her problem and that she wasn't going to do an exchange. When pressed, she got even nastier and told the buyer to leave the premises and called her a bitch in front of other buyers, although the while sitting in front of a sign saying the buyers needed to be respectful. She also remarked that since it was an estate sale the person was dead and no one to complain to about her. Would not recommend this business to anyone, very unprofessional in terms of set up, pricing and attitude. read more
