We've been wanting to try Mexcal for some time and finally made it in tonight. I had the classic margarita and my husband had the spicy jalapeno margarita. We ordered the chips and salsa and the guacamole. The guacamole was okay. The salsa came in a trio, a roasted salsa, verde and roja. The salsas had good flavor. I ordered the grilled mahi taco and shrimp enchilada. My husband ordered carne asada taco and birria taco, He liked the birria taco. He said the meat was flavorful and consome (broth) was very good. He said the carne asada was good. He liked his margarita. Mine was okay. The shrimp enchilada was very good and I enjoyed the salsa that came with the dish. Absolute masterpiece of a restaurant! I love the concept of à la carte ordering and then layering on delicious food and expert service... a match made in heaven. Mexcal is a taco joint serving up elevated tacos that you can order one by one. These things are loaded up with protein and toppings, and they do not skimp on the portions! The flavor combinations are absolutely unreal, and I love that they have some unique protein options, too. I tried the duck confit, the spicy lamb, and the short rib tacos. My dad ordered the al pastor and quesabirria tacos. We both agreed that the short rib was our favorite. Tender short rib in a delicious sauce topped with fresh guac. Fantastic! I was also shocked by how much duck they loaded up the duck confit taco with. That was probably my second favorite. Super tender duck with tons of flavor. The vibe here is casual, but it can be a nice, elevated date night spot. I really enjoy that you can order one or two tacos and then order more if you're still hungry. The service between orders is fast enough that you don't have to feel pressured to order them all at the same time. Happy hour!! Right at the heart of midtown, on virginia street. Great selection of tacos. There's something to everyone's taste here. I had the cauliflower tacos and it was really good. Slightly heat with some cayenne pepper, but really good. The quesobirria is by far my favorite there. The flavor is right, accompanied with a dipping sauce. Really good! Four of us went here for dinner on a Saturday night. It was packed. Fortunately we were able to get a table. The ambience is lively and festive. Our server arrived shortly after we were seated and took our drink orders. He seemed to be in a hurry. He returned shortly thereafter to tell us about the specials and take our dinner orders. Every time he returned to our table he seemed rushed. Actually, I felt rushed through our meal from start to finish. I ordered the house specialty taco called the Quesabirria. The menu described it as a crispy, braised short rib taco. When it arrived, it was anything but crisp. While the shell looked like it had been grilled, it was extremely soggy, wet and quite squishy. It did taste good though. I also ordered a tempura shrimp taco, which was one of the nightly specials. It was delicious. The shrimp was crispy on the outside and tender and warm on the inside. And the toppings were tasty. For dessert, I had a piece of Tres Leche cake. It was also delicious. The cake was tasty and moist and the frosting was wonderful. I wish I hadn't felt rushed throughout the entire meal and that the crispy Quesabirria taco was crispy. Even though the shrimp taco was delicious, I'm not sure I would rush back. read more

Mexcal can get busy, especially on weekends, but they make it easy by letting you join the waitlist from their website before you arrive. They don't take reservations (that I know of) but the virtual waitlist helps a lot with wait times on a busy night! I have been to Mexcal a few times and have always found the service prompt and friendly. On my recent Saturday night visit, I was surprised by how quickly the food came out given how busy it was. I tried the soft shell crab taco, which was a special the day I visited, and it was excellent! It was tasty and a fun, unique menu offering that really stood out. I also tried the octopus taco, which I'd probably skip next time. The octopus tasted a bit fishy and the texture wasn't quite right. To be fair, octopus is hard to cook perfectly, and this one just fell a little short for me. The menu has several great margarita options, and they're nicely balanced in flavor. I came back shortly after my last experience being so gosh dang good! Even on a busy Friday night, my partner and I were still served quickly and enjoyed our avenue tacos. I opted for the quesabirria and duck this time, and they were both crispy, juicy, and full of flavor! We moved to the bar for a nightcap and tried their michelada and Alyssa loca drink. Their house made michelada is the smokiest and saltiest mix I've tried, but also the tastiest!! My only slight annoyance is that they seated us at an added table right next to the door, so it felt a little busy and cold each time the door would open. We had a delightful dinner with friends at Mexcal the other night. The service was spot on and the food was delicious. The variety of unique tacos and such was amazing. I wish I had the appetite to sample more of the, but that is for another day. The Quesabirria taco was tasty and juicy with a delicious consommé to dip it in. The Soft Shell crab was served with a pineapple salsa with just a bit too much Jalapeño. But I was able to pick that out. Overall a great evening. The screened patio was still a great place to eat even though it was November. But the heat pumps were set a little too warm. Right on the intersection of Virginia St and California Ave, Mexcal is a clean and great ambient restaurant for tacos. We were seated immediately and the waiter was awesome. He gave us the specials, took our drinks and gave us some time to think. Came back in good timing and we got our order in. Note, when you order a taco, it's one taco, but it's frickin loaded and priced fairly, so you will want to order two or three most likely which is cool because you can try all their variety. I had the grilled mahi mahi and duck confit and my wife had the duck confit and soft shell crab. Of course we ordered chips, salsa and guacamole and there were three salsas and two sides to the guacamole. We tried the margaritas and also some beers. $5-$6 per a street taco (aka "avenue tacos" per their menu) seemed a bit pricey until I saw the size of these tacos and the amount of meat in each taco-- wow, a good value! Everyone in our group had a different favorite taco. My 7 year old loved the fried Mahi Mahi (no sauce) and the carne asada, my 5 year old liked the cauliflower and the carne asada, my 2 year old liked the lengua taco best. My husband's favorite was the quesabrilla taco. The guacamole was a hit with our kids too (just straightforward guac-- not too much onion, no unexpected seasonings). The chips are deliciously well salted and fresh tasting, not too thin not too thick. And last, but not least, the churros had THE BEST texture I have ever had. The churros were light and crispy with a warm soft center-- oh my, the star by far. And at around $8 if I recall correctly, we thought they were a great value because each of us in our party of 6 was able to enjoy one (the pieces were about 3" long each). Let's TACO bout tacos! I haven't really been able to find a good taco spot in Reno, but this spot isn't bad if you're looking for a very casual, but a bit more elevated (compared to a street taco stand or taco truck) experience. Mexcal specializes in Avenue Tacos, which are quite a bit bigger and much more loaded compared to traditional street tacos. They also have chips and salsa (~$4), guacamole (market price, which ended up being $11....), margaritas, and beers to go along with their signature tacos. Overall, my favorite tacos were the quesabirria (which comes with consome) and shrimp tacos, but I would definitely skip the octopus (underseasoned) and al pastor (which consists of giant chunks of pork instead of the thin, deeply flavorful slices I'm used to). Prices are a bit high (especially for the guacamole) at around $6+ a taco, but the quantity of meat and quality of toppings (avocado, pineapple, pickled onions etc) definitely makes up for it. read more

Another visit to Mexcal, this time to take my sister, her husband, and my niece while they were visiting. Another knockout visit and they were thoroughly impressed. We sat out on the patio this time and service was just as fast as it is inside. Ambiance inside is great, and while the patio could use a little work, it's still nice. The food, everything was great except for the duck tacos were not the same as they were my last visit at all. I'm gonna go ahead and give Mexcal a pass this time and see how next time goes, but the first time I had them they were totally moist, and had nice seared bits. This time the texture was all very soft, no sear, and a little bit dry. But I'll give them another shot, could just be an off day, there were still tasty. What honestly drew me to this place and one of the main reasons I decided to try it was their octopus appetizer. When we arrived, it was peak hour and we thought we'd have to wait a while for a table, but that wasn't the case at all. The hostess was very efficient and immediately seated us in the back area. The service from the entire staff was excellent. The servers checked in to make sure our food was good, and they were all very kind. I genuinely loved how attentive and welcoming they were. Now, the food -- OMG -- it was absolutely delicious! Of course, I had to order the octopus because I couldn't leave without trying it, and it completely exceeded my expectations. It was super tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. We also ordered quesabirria tacos, lengua tacos, al pastor, and one more that I can't quite remember but they all had great flavor and a generous amount of meat. Came in twice in one week. First we stopped in to get out of the thunderstorm and try out some fun cocktails and the charred octopus appetizer. Drinks were super tasty and the octopus was delicious! We knew we needed too top back in to try the tacos. A couple days later we stopped in for some late night tacos. All 2 we tried were absolutely amazing and piled high with meat, fantastic price and a great way to be able to try as many different tacos as you want. The duck confit is my absolute favorite and I cannot wait to come back and have another! This time we sat outside on the patio, epic ambiance, great music and fun lighting at night. The restaurant itself is a nice little quiet spot in midtown and the parking wasn't terrible which is not always common in the area. The food itself however was below average. I went with 2 other people and across 5 different types of meat everything was dry. The flavors were not great and even the chips and salsa (which are not free) were over salted and tasted like they were poured out of a bag. Mexcal has been on my list for a quite a while after a friend and I tried to go on a holiday to find them closed. We tried this time for said friends birthday and I thought it was delish! First and foremost, the service was quick and polite! We visited for lunch during the workday and they got us in and out in about thirty minutes without rushing us. Our servers were very attentive. I ordered three of the Avenue tacos (street tacos) and was delighted hit fully pleased by the amount of meat in each taco. They were all absolutely stuffed full. Of the three I tried, the carne asada was my favorite, followed by the short rib, then the chicken. The carne asada was great, nicely seasoned snd not spicy, which is my preference. The chicken had a slight spice which wasn't overbearing. The short rib was also good. In my opinion, three Avenue tacos is more than enough for a meal. Two tacos is probably good, especially if you start with an appetizer and end with dessert. I treated my friend for his birthday and paid about $36 before tip for the six tacos (no drinks). I think this price is pretty reasonable. The interior of the restaurant was very clean and neat. I can see how it would be lively at night with drinks flowing. This is my go to place for quality Mexican food. The quesabirria tacos are my favorite. I've also had the spicy lamb tacos and mahi mahi tacos. That spicy lamb is not for the faint of heart. I finished it, but it was a struggle and I like spicy. Their alcohol drinks are strong- I'd suggest trying one of their signature margaritas. Service is prompt and attentive, but not overly friendly.
