I'm battling this review. I battle rating it for the drinks/ambiance versus the service. The good: absolutely the cutest vibe and decor. What a cool cocktail bar!!! Absolutely loved my experience here when I was in town. It's like a late night night cap type of feel. Inside is all dark and moody, just the way I like my cocktail bars! Our servers were all amazing. They have a ton of cocktails to choose from. You scan a QR code to take you to the menu online. I of course ordered the Bees Knees because that's one of my faves. It was fantastic! The star of the show definitely is their secret booze room where you can buy nice bottles of liquor. It's behind their bar in a speakeasy type of door. SO COOL! This was a fun place to check out. The vibe is gothic speakeasy. The cocktails are craft and each one I tried was great. I tried the Palmorita first, it reminded me of an orange creamsicle pop. After that I tried the Dreamhouse which was served in a martini like glass, not with ice. It was sweet and tasty as well. Came in specifically this time just to try the Carajillo they have been advertising on Instagram lately. So the drink itself, was great and the drinks here have always been great. Highly recommend trying that one out. It's cool to see them finally come out with something new, because I've been thinking a lot lately that they need to start adding some stuff to their menu. It's been the same for far too long when there's a lot of other bars out here is that are coming up with new drinks regularly. What really knocks it down to peg for me this time, is I found out the hard way, that they don't allow food at all. You can't eat any food inside, and you can't even eat any food outside on the patio. This is the first bar I've been to in Reno that doesn't allow food, and that is a total no go for me. We had ordered food from right across the street and the plan was to eat our one little appetizer and enjoy our cocktails on the patio then go walking around. So we literally had to drink our one cocktail and then go eat our food in the car.... Pretty lame and with that and the stale menu I see this as our last visit until something big changes. It's still a good spot if you've never been, the drinks won't disappoint, but to keep people coming back regularly they need to change up their menu. The parking situation is what you would expect from the area, which might involve a short walk from neighboring streets. The seating situation inside is also a bit of a challenge on their busier nights. The drinks are pricier than I would like, but they are very tasty. 9 stars, can I give it a 9? I have been to lots of bourbon bars, this may be my favorite! I had to tell all my bourbon friends to visit! Ok, for most people, the place is really cute with the speakeasy vibe. They have a fabulous selection of mixed drinks, different than anyone out there. I'm not a huge mixed drink fan, but I really liked the ones I had. But the whisky!!! They have the best selection I have seen!! They have a room where you cam buy most with a huge selection of barrel picks. I'm kinda in love! I saved a whole lot of $ (I'm telling myself) by tasting some frequent reviews of Great whisky, but not my taste profile. I was able to pick up some very good buys on hard to find things I love. BTW, management should take Parker on the next barrel tasting trip. He was an awesome Bartender, we spent a lot on tasting of Unicorns such as King of Kentucky, Anitque 107 and Russel 15. Recently my husband brought me in to try the Bam Bam Punch because he knew I would love it, yep this fruity pebble topped drink is the perfect combination of delicious! Every drink I've had from here is perfectly crafted and well thought out. I truly love the ambience here. The entire place is black, very simple and paired with the dim glowing candles at nights gives it a nice warm feel. Death & Taxes is a cutting-edge cocktail bar that can stand toe-to-toe with the best in the world, which is a delightful shock in a city as small and isolated as Reno. This is where composition matters. Drinks are built with the kind of intent you expect in a kitchen, not a pub. Their Penicillin is the clearest example of the house philosophy. It starts with brown-butter-washed Bank Note Scotch, which gives the base a warm, nutty softness without blunting the grain. That's laced with an in-house ginger-saffron-honey syrup made fresh on a tight cadence, brightened with lemon to the exact point of lift, then poured over a hand-carved block of ice stamped with the bar's insignia. Every vector is tuned. Nothing flails. The finish carries. What makes the menu sing is the mid-palate. Nearly every build leans on one, often two or three thoughtful modifiers to bridge spirit and citrus: amari, aperitivi, fortified wines, house infusions, tinctures, saline, even the occasional acid-adjust. The results drink layered rather than loud. First sip invites a second. You find yourself paying attention. The room itself is tiny, nearly all black inside and out, with a nominal Prohibition conceit that reads more funereal in color scheme than speakeasy pastiche. It works. The space has character and a sense of focus. Seats are limited and weekends pack out for good reason, which makes it a reliable place to bump into Renoites with taste and curiosity. I have a love hate relationship with Death and Taxes. I love the vibe they have, super cool mysterious interior. Like being in an intimate library in some old house. I also loooove their cocktails. Really unique, always delicious. I don't drink very much, but the interesting menu they have always makes me want to try another drink! The things I don't love are that sometimes the lighting is just a bit too low for me. The drink prices are also a little spendy, so not necessarily a place I'd go super often. Finally, I get pretty claustrophobic in here real quick in the summer when it's busy. Obviously it's a good sign for the business if the bar is packed, but oh my goodness there's no breathing room. Coupled with the low lighting I usually don't last too long trying to survive amongst the crowd.
