She was also originally from my home state of Illinois so we shared a moment of connection. She was so nice and willing to explain things, I was so grateful to have her pleasant, patient attention. The security (armed) guy at the front door stood up to greet me, and helped me log into the waiting line machine. He seemed genuinely happy to share what he knew and what I could expect. Parking was easy. The waiting room was clean. I'd love to go back here and who can say that about a SS office!

So since they haven't entered the 21st century in this way for some inexplicable reason, you have to go down to this office, fill out a form, and then see a clerk who will order one for you and have it sent to your house in about 2 weeks' time. So since I needed a new drivers license and that requires a SS card which I lost about 5 moves ago, I trekked down here. It's difficult to find. Even my GPS was confused, but I finally found it after winding around a boring little strip mall-looking office park. Just FYI it's the south side of the complex. I love that the MO & KS DMV's offer a way to get in line via text so you're not standing in an endless line, and maybe this office has that capability too but it didn't occur to me until I was already there and they have no WiFi so it became a moot point anyway. So I took a number and stood in line. It took about 45 minutes to be seen by a clerk. The place was standing room only and I feared I'd be there for hours on end, but luckily the line moved pretty quickly. It's not fun doing boring adult crap like going to the Social Security Office, but if you must, just know it won't be as mind numbingly annoying as you may think, and hopefully your line will move fairly quickly like mine did. And take a book! Oh and don't wear your coat because the heat was cranked up to at least 90. Government waste at its finest, naturally.

Built in 1897 as Kansas City's workhouse jail and later served as a storage facility, marine training center and an animal euthanasia center until being abandoned in 1972. With it's dark history, graffiti, collapsed roofs, dark stairwells, debris, and remnants of homelessness everywhere, my solo visit was slightly macabre and a bit scary not knowing if I was alone when turning each corner. I did run into two other explorers and one homeless person in my self guided tour of the darkside. There was talk about a decade ago of renovating the property into a venue for weddings and concerts but that failed to materialize. My advise to you is put on your big-boy pants (or girl) grab a friend and go explore an iconic architectural piece of history before it's too late.
