I was surprised to see good reviews. My experience let's say was much less than mediocre. Nothing had any flavor. I ordered a Chimichanga and the beef was browned beef without any spices whatsoever. The red Enchilada sauce was thin with NO flavor. Rice was reddish in color but flavored. I can make better Mexican food myself without an ounce of that culture in me. Best Tex-Mex we've had up north. We got the combo fajitas for two, shrimp, chicken and steak. Comes with 4 tortillas each and rice, beans, lettuce and a bit of guac. Very flavorful! We each ate a lot and had a ton of left overs. The margaritas though small packed a big punch. I just wish the salsa was more spicy. We had like 4 different servers help our table but they were all friendly. read more

I had the burrito with chicken and a cheese sauce and although the food was fresh the flavors were weak and it was too spicy for me. My husband had the beef fajita, and he enjoyed his meal. The prices were good, it was clean and the inside was pretty. There were only two people working. A man and a woman. Service sucked. Never got refills and service was pretty non existent after getting our food. It wasn't even busy. Got nachos, a burrito, and a combination of enchilada and a tamale. The nachos were ehhh nothing special and not a lot of cheese or flavor. The guacamole was pretty good though. The complimentary chips and salsa. Meh. The Salas had no flavor and the chips weren't even salty or warm. The cheese enchilada was okay. The sauce for it was ridiculously sweet. I was expecting a savory mole or something but nope, a sweet pinkish sauce. I couldn't eat it. Our food arrived cold. We should have known when the guy behind us mentioned it to the waitress. Like it wasn't busy so why was our food cold? Cold rice and beans suck. The tamale's Masa was good but the chicken inside lacked flavor. Why oh why is it so hard to season things!? I gave them a chance last night after reading that they had numerous health code issues in the past year. I almost walked straight back out. I should have. I went to wash my hands, and saw crumbs on the floor and dirty dishes in a bin in the hallway outside the restroom. (I ordered what should have been one of the most flavorful dishes on the menu, "Chiles Rellenos" and instead was bland and tasteless and covered in brown slop. I ordered one tamal (on the side) and it was dry as an old bone. These are my favorite dishes that I have ordered in many different Mexican restaurants. (Now it's the middle of the night and my belly is upset). It was upset almost immediately. The food had come out VERY hot and looked presentable, but it certainly wasn't "beautiful," and it was just so tasteless and bland. I left most of it on the table. I never waste. I'll stick with a quality place like Emiliano's in the south side for beautiful presentation and TASTY Mexican food. I wasted $15+ dollars (including tip). I won't be returning. Ever. read more

This was my first visit and I must say I did not get a great first impression. As soon as we walked in the door a dirty and full vacuum cleaner was plainly in view right near the door. The cash register area looked very unkempt and messy. Never the less we sat down and was promptly greeted. My hubby and I both ordered a combination plate. My beef taco was dry tasting and after one bite I gave it to my husband to eat. He thought it was okay. I also had a cheese enchilada and it was quite good. The Spanish rice was fluffy not the usual dry rice. The queso was tasty. The waitress was flustered with a lot of tables but was efficient. It was okay. Not fabulous but okay. What concerns me is that if the front of the restaurant was kind of dirty I wonder about what you don't see. We may be back to try the fried ice cream but ole Mexico would not be my first choice. read more

Authentic Mexican food hidden away in a strip mall between a Lowes and a Walmart. We were in the area for a week and visited here twice. Tasty dishes and fantastic staff. We were made to feel right at home. Portions are big and the food is filling. Over our visits we sampled quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas, tamales, and burritos. I had ordered the shrimp fajitas and unlike other Mexican places I have been to, they served it with lots and lots of shrimp which made enough for multiple taco shells. One of the members of the group was a vegetarian and ordered the vegetarian deluxe and said it was some of the best Mexican food she has had. I always get an enchilada meal...3 chicken enchiladas, rice, & refried beans. It is incredible !! My husband has tried just about everything on the menu & has loved everything !! These meals are very authentic & they never skimp on the fillings in the tacos & enchiladas. I love the tons of shredded chicken in the enchiladas & burritos. We've never had to wait any longer than about 15 minutes for our meals no matter how crowded it is. And....what can I say about the margaritas...DELICIOUS !! I was not very satisfied with visiting this restaurant here in Belle Vernon. Though I was seated immediately upon arriving there, I was not very pleased with most everything afterwards. The salsa and chips we're not bad, but the dish I ordered, Burritos Deluxe, was not very tasty and the meat (beef) was quite greasy. The refried beans and rice (that came with the dish) had hardly any flavor. It's been almost 24 hours since I ate there, and I'm still having indigestion. I have no idea why this place was so packed on a Saturday night. The two of us walked in, got seated after a little bit of a wait, and ordered our drinks. Drinks were delivered. Then we waited for our waiter to take our order. Folks who came in after us (a party of 5), sat down, got their drinks, and were waited on before us. Not cool. We ordered a couple of combo meals. I had the guacamole tostada and a beef enchilada; came with rice and refried beans. Authentic Mexican food? Not even close. When you have to put salt and pepper on Mexican food, you know it's going to be a long night. There wasn't one spice,...not even salt and pepper,...in any of the food. 100% bland,...it all tasted the same. My lovely dining partner wondered if her tastebuds were in a coma. Even the guacamole on the tostada was bland. It tasted like all they did was mash up the avocados and threw it on top of lettuce and tomatoes then on top of a tostada. I wasn't sure even how to eat it because I couldn't pick it up, so I ate it like a salad. On of the things on my date's plate looked like it came out of frozen food box. The only saving grace from this place getting one star was the "endless" chips and salsa/pico,...even though they only served us one bowl of chips. The salsa obviously came from a jar; the pico may have been made in house. This was the only thing on the table that had any semblance of flavor. Hate to give places like this a bad review because there is limited variety in the area, but I had Taco Bell the night before going to this place. Joined local family members for a lunch there. As Mexican food goes, I typically enjoy a meal 3 to 4 times a month. Thought this may be a new taste so we met there. Ordered the special 25 (carnitas) and my wife got a fajitas lunch. We also got a side of guacamole. First thing I noticed was the state of the mens room. It looked like a slop room for a janitor. There were mops leaning against the wall and mens clothing casually tossed on a shelf overhead. Chips kept on coming (this is good). The salsa was average. The spicy that I ordered needed a hefty helping of Tapacio to really become flavorful. The wife's guacamole was refrigerated, and had a look between slime and vomit. Again the taste was average. It went uneaten after a few dips. I love pork Carnitas and have eaten it at several mexican restaurants. Here they just seem to have boiled the meat. It had a blanched pale look to it and was course and dry on the inside. It was edible, but well below my expectations. Maybe thats the best way to talk about this experience, it was average at best. The service was above average. Chips were filled as well drinks. But the food, just eh. This is not a Mexican place that I would recommend to someone wanting the great tastes of good Mexican cooking. I absolutely love coming here for margarita Thursdays!! Once in awhile my co-workers and I will gather here after work on Thursday to enjoy the $3 margaritas. Their flavors are wonderful, and you can even mix them. Frozen or on the rocks. For either 13 or 16 dollars (can't remember) you can get a HUGE fishbowl margarita! I saw one go past me last time I was here and OMG. It was huge. The food here is also excellent. I have never had anything that I didn't love. My favorite are the shrimp fajitas. Excellent Tex-Mex meal at a very reasonable price. Dinner on the Eve of Cinco de Mayo. The restaurant was about half full on the Monday night and the service was attentive. The servers used teamwork to make sure drink order taken, chips & salsa supplied, order taken, delivered, and drinks refreshed. I had Gallo Pinto which was marked as a new item on the menu not consists of grilled chicken pieces over black beans and rice with a moderate amount of queso over it. I would definitely order this again - delicious! The chicken was flavorful as not at all salty which can be a problem for marinated poultry. It was a huge portion and I brought half home. We also ordered a chicken chimichanga. It was crisp and very good. My daughter is weed it without the sauce topping so I can't speak to the typical presentation. He filling of shredded chicken, cheese, and pick de gallo was moist but not heavy. It's served with guacamole and sour cream and with refried beans and Spanish rice as sides. There were two tables celebrating birthdays. The five or six waiters brought VERY loud noisemakers and sang in Spanish. It was wonderfully outrageous and both honorees (a woman 60-ish and a young lady 20-ish) both loved it. Minus one star because the waiter never picked up the payment. He said he would handle it but after waiting 15+ minutes I put my credit card away and left cash. Ten more minutes as we finished margaritas and we left with $ on the table. Been looking for good Mexican food in or near the Burgh for a while. Arrived on a Thursday evening (during happy hour). 2.50 cent Margarita was delicious. Free basket of chips w/ two types of salsa. The restaurant was packed but we got seated quickly. The menu carried the basics that most Mexican places have but to my disappointment no Arroz Con Pollo which my favorite and the benchmark dish I use to compare quality in Mexican fare. I ordered a combo plater w/ Taco, Enchilada and Chili Relleno delivered fast, hot and fresh. The service was very good, friendly and welcoming. Old Mexico in Bell Vernon is a definite must try and don't forget to enjoy a margarita. read more

But with that said not all restaurant's are all about the food, it is also about the service and this is where this place went wrong. First off no one waited on us for 20 minutes. My brother got there late and a young man named Jose helped him and and his girlfriend with their drinks. We were still waiting to get ours. I finally asked Jose to get me a drink so I could wash down the chips and salsa. Once our drinks came out again no waiter in sight. I asked Jose if he was our waiter he said he wasn't qualified and he was sorry. 20 more minutes minutes went by and another guy shows up, not Jose and not our drink guy. So this guy takes our order and seems confused. Well our food came about an hour later. I asked Jose what was taking so long in friendly manor and he said he didn't know but could refill our drinks and chips. Then the unthinkable happens as Jose is getting drinks. Another unknown waiter walks by and touches my brothers girlfriend in her side near her breast. I saw it plain as day. I immediately asked him if he knew her and he said no. I said okay well do you have a thing for her or something and he said yes. I loudly said it is never okay to touch a female. He joked and said yeah yeah and then touched another female at our table saying it wasn't hard or bad just a joke. I again said don't ever do it again. When Jose returned I asked him if this was typical and he said yes he does it for fun. I am disgusted. Touching someone is not a joke. No matter how good the food is it is never okay. If it wasn't for the fact my brothers girlfriend doesn't want the attention I would have called the police and pressed charges. We will never go there again. read more
