I love walking around Chinatown. There are few grocery stores like this in the area. I love looking at the various teas and snacks. I can't understand some of the employees but they are nice and we make do with minimal conversation. If you don't feel well, someone can blend a batch of customized tea. There are interesting nick nacks and Souvenirs. If you want something that represents Chinatown, this is a good place to find a gift. read more

I'm giving this place three stars because it really depends what you're looking for. This is definitely not a place to do Asian grocery shopping. Groceries maybe take 1/10 of the store and it's mostly prepackaged, dried or canned items and there's not much to choose from. Maybe a few sauces too but none that really makes stopping here for groceries worthwhile. They do have some teas. But medicinal herbs may be more of a thing. However what they have most are Asian trinkets. So for me, this is probably the best place to buy an Asian trinket as a souvenir, for the lunar new year, or to decorate a home or office space, as if to say "I've been to Chinatown." read more

I love coming here. Everyone who works here is so friendly and they ALWAYS have exactly what I need when I can't get it anywhere else. The variety of products for such a small store is nothing short of miraculous and the prices are more than fair. Very disappointing. I came in looking for planters (of which they used to have a huge selection!) for an indoor plant. Stuff you see at TJ Maxx for $15. Is here for $49. A basic ginger jar is $90. This used to be a place to get great bargains on basic plates & bowls--now you are paying Pottery Barn prices without the quality guarantees. Just not worth it!! read more

Da Hsin is the closest thing approaching an Asian grocery in Chinatown. It's really well-stocked with spices, sauces, and dried foods, as well as Chinese medicines ranging from herbs to animal parts. Don't worry though, there's nothing awful like rhinoceros horn. Unfortunately, there's no produce or any other type of fresh food, or even prepared frozen foods (besides a small freezer that sometimes has mochi and such). It's not really a complete location for Chinese cooking needs, but it can come in handy if you're planning to cook something and realise you forgot a certain spice. Besides their culinary selection, there's another half of the store that sells trinkets, souvenirs, chopsticks, and china that can make for nice gifts. I really wish Da Hsin could expand into a proper grocery store, but it's solid for what it is. read more

Bottom Line: Probably one of the most authentic stores in Chinatown. DC's Chinatown is not very Chinese but there are a handful of places that make this neighborhood feel legit and this store is one of them. It reminds me of my favorite store in San Francisco's Chinatown. In addition to selling good luck cat, tea sets, little dishes and Chinese packaged groceries it seems that they also have a Chinese herbalist on staff. It's great to be able to get a glimpse into another culture right in our nation's capital. read more

I'm pretty sure this place saved my life. Seriously. I was in allopathic medical school. I had bronchitis that refused to go away with allopathic treatments... 2 sets of antibiotics later and nearly giving up on life, I dragged a fellow med student who spoke Chinese down here in search of an alternative treatment - one that worked. We went into the dusty dirty shop and approached the man behind the bar... I still don't know his title... Magic Potion Maker? Herbalist? Medicinalist? Bartender? I stayed mute as my friend did the talking. The magician was noticeably astonished by the sounds of Chinese escaping the mouth of my African American friend. Once my friend repeated what he had said now to listening ears, two options were provided. Option 1: Go to a practitioner of Chinese medicine with my complaint, have that person prescribe a treatment, bring that prescription to the magician, and he will mix it up from the many brown dried ingredients in the drawers and cabinets around the room. Option 2: Buy the little bottle of pills over there. Although the magician provided me with the name of a recommended practitioner, I was pressed with exams approaching and feeling miserable. I chose option 2, and it proceeded to make me all better in a matter of days. For the rest of my days in medical school, I kept a bottle of this magic stuff on my shelf. I'm pretty sure it's illegal now. But I guess I should thank Da Hsin for getting me through some tough times at least, even if they still have yet to learn how to dust. read more

OMG, can it be? A more than "decent" Chinese dry good store? You can smell the dried herbs and teas as you walk in the door... Salted duck eggs, real szechuan peppercorns, 1000 year old eggs, dried noodles of a good variety, more than your basic Chinese sauces(hoisin! plum! black bean! oyster!), rice in 20 lb bags... Huge selection of Chinese teas too. Prices are a little bit higher than out in the VA and MD suburbs, but not by more than .50-$1 (I bought a pack of vermicelli for .70, shrimp flavored noodles for $2). They also have a large selection of vases, dishware, teapots, etc, and a decent amount of cooking stuff (deep fry basket, bamboo steamers). Other knick knacks like asian snacks (Pocky!) and good luck cats and red money envelopes. This is no Ranch 99, but this place will definitely get you by if you're metro-bound in the District. Wish they had frozen and fresh goods, but I guess that's too much to ask. (Btw, why is this place listed as a furniture store on yelp?) Location is hidden next to the CVS construction. Credit card is only accepted for non-food items...or something and there's a $10 credit card minimum. 4.5 stars read more

My search for little red envelopes for Chinese New Year ended at Da Hsin Trading Company in Chinatown. This place it packed with all sorts of odds and ends from tea sets and chop sticks to Obama t-shirts and Buddha statues. They also have a wide selection of odd teas and herbs giving the place a bizarre smell. Aside from the envelopes, I also picked up a cool little turtle tchotchke for the girlfriend. DO NOT GO! ! Purchased two pairs of pajamas for my daughters and was told I could exchange them if they didn't like the colors. When I tried to exchange them I was told it was outside one week (never told only one week exchange period) and then that they would not accept the item because they were damaged. My daughter only tried on and items still had creases. The item was sold in poor condition and they refused the return. They told me I could get fixed in Chinatown in NYC?!? 1/27/23 I walked in went straight to the area that sells the wine. I've gotten plum wine from this institution several times in the past. I was looking for a particular brand. After I didn't see what I was searching for. As I departed I came into this Asian lady. I don't ask associates if they work there/hear i tend to ask are you associated with the store she immediately says no English!!! This is the only true Chinese Herbal Shop that I know of in the area Not only do they have all of the ingredients to my Great Grandfather's mystery medicine. Don't ask me how they figured out the prices..it is by weight and I'm sure its posted somewhere in Chinese but I didn't see it. They have all of my favorite Chinese groceries and random Chinese gaudy decor. No veggies or fresh stuff, but condiments and coconut jello are definitely on the shelf. They also have all of the supplies to pay your respect to your ancestors. A great place to stop by to get your Chinese New Year supplies and goodies. I swear the people that work here know almost all of the Chinese dialects. You could definitely have your old-school grandma call in an order and you could pick it up for her and they will know what she is talking about. The ladies there definitely made fun of my white-girl accented Chinese....*sigh* I try.... They are also very metro accessible in the Chinatown-Gallery Place Metro Stop. Definitely one of the more authentic Chinese businesses in Chinatown. We found Da Hsin by accident while visiting DC, we overheard someone saying that this is the oldest chinese gift store around town. This place must have a million items, from Chinese Herbal medications to cookware to traditional Chinese clothing...You name it and most likely you will be able to find it there! The only thing is, you might be there a while since they have so much to look at! So plan ahead! Where we live, we don't have stores like this, one stop shop, we have to drive an hour to downtown LA and even so, it is not this exciting. Wow! This place has cans of vegetarian mock duck, vegetarian abalone, vegetarian sweet and sour pork, and vegetarian chicken! What a happy surprise to find that all there. :-) One time, I went here and got some DELICIOUS beef jerky -esque shelf-stable BBQ tofu in a plastic bag. Today, sadly, the staff said this was unavailable--I hope it gets restocked, cuz it was amazing. Also, it has lots of cool, weird cookies and snacks, many of which are "accidentally vegan" if you read the ingredients. Oh, and everything feels very affordable. I love this shop. This is one of the few shops in Chinatown that seems to be related to...well...China. They have an excellent selection of tea and herbs. The herbalist is a wealth of knowledge. Ask him any question and he can give you dried herbs on the spot to remedy your request. The staff is knowledgeable about all of their products. Fastforward 7 years when you're shit out of luck when it comes to Asian food and decide that this is pretty damn good. There is no herbalist there who will just make up a potion for you. The employees all just gave me the card of a local Chinese doctor and said I had to go to him if I wanted herbs. I had been to this doctor and he didn't help me at all. What a waste of an hour's drive. read more

The best and most authentic store in Chinatown. They have several miniature Buddha statues and other trinkets. I've often passed by this place on the way to the movies or dinner. When I finally walked inside, the quarter Chinese in me just squealed in delight (silently) at all the kitschy knick knacks and Asian cooking ingredients that this store carried: bobble head lucky cats in all shapes and sizes, geisha girl dolls, table top fountains, and jade sculptures to give your home a Feng Shui make-over, cheap but sturdy made in China plastic and ceramic wares, teas for all different ailments, and many of the ingredients needed to prepare an Asian meal. They seem to be the only herb, tea, gels store in Washington, DC Chinatown. If you're looking for an herb, tea, etc., they may have what you are looking for since they have quite a variety of products. You may want to do a bit of research about the product you are interested in buying before you head over to the store since it will be easier for you to tell the store employees what you are looking for. The prices are relatively reasonable, especially the teas. I bought a box of Ginseng Extractum that comes in 30 small bottles for easy consumption. read more

I needed a conical bamboo hat for my Halloween costume. The day before Halloween. This place carries those, five bucks a piece, for the price of battling traffic, insane parking prices, and/or metro fare. They also had the longan berries my Chinese mother, rest her soul, had phoned me earlier and requested despite being unable to explain to me how to spell and say the name properly. The ladies at the register had a blast with my American butchery of the word, found the berries, and whisked me through a successful sale with broad smiles, even after browsing a bit past their posted closing time. I wasn't today, but if I were looking for old herbs, teas, dried noodles, Chinese clothing, or good porcelain, I could have found all of that here. This place was my children's first experience of Chinatown at its gaudy, wonderful best..they were enamored!!!! My daughter is an avid fan of all that is Asian and I had to drag her out kicking and screaming - with a little Buddha souvenir of course. My son wanted every sword displayed but was satisfied with a tiny dragon and a wonderfully tacky picture of him and a super chubby, super happy Buddha. This place is amazing! Me and my friend stumbled upon this place by accident while visiting for the weekend, and everything the store had to offer was amazing. Everything you could ask for in a oriental type store, they had it. Anywhere from herbal tea to affordable sake sets. The people who run the store are very friendly and make the whole experience. Cute little store with a wide variety of items, from specialty tea to furniture. There's a lot to see here and the prices are very reasonable. I didn't end up buying anything here but I liked all the little tchotchke's and the tiny decor/baubles. Worth a trip here if your out wandering about Chinatown in DC. read more
