I don't understand the negative reviews here! Just joined this gym today and did my first workout. I was looking for a place that's affordable, clean, conveniently located (I'm a few blocks away), has plenty of equipment, and doesn't pressure you to sign up for personal training, classes, etc. That's exactly what I got. At $19.99 a month (with no long term contracts), this is perfect for me. I can use the ellipticals, the bikes, the treadmills. And at this price, if I go three times a week, I'm still getting my money's worth. If you want glamor and glitz with a price tag to match, go to one of the "fancy" places. There are plenty of them out there. But if you're looking for a place to get in a workout without the nonsense, then check out this place. You won't be sorry! read more

It's not the biggest, nor is it the sexiest, but this is still a solid fitness center. MG Fitness includes machines that are almost always working, efficient parking, and a light membership cost. The only negatives can be found from the size and front desk workers. Especially on a Sunday morning when lots of people are exercising, the gym gets quite cramped. As for the front desk workers, they often get confused whenever a problem with your membership or whatnot gets brought up. Aside from the occasional loud grunter, there are no annoying meat-heads to be found, as far as I know. Anyone from any age or any type of physique can join without intimidation. read more

They've replaced every single treadmill. AWESOME. TVs that actually WORK on them (granted it's only like 15 channels - for some ungodly reason) but hey, they work and they're bigger than the old ones. It can still get crowded, but it looks like you new years resolution people are FINALLY GONE. The parking lot still gets crowded but it's managable. I still don't like the fact that Netflix on my phone is blocked with their wireless signal, and I still think they have a lot of unused machines due to crap choices by management, but at least I can still go here and do what I need to do. read more

We are fairly new here, about three months. I have been to many other gyms in the past, and this one is just as good. Overall it's pretty clean, and there always seems to be a gentleman wondering around cleaning up. All the machines seem to be functional for the most part. Our son does training with Nick and loves it. My wife and I basically just do cardio and weight machines. It's inexpensive, close to home and meets our needs. Parking on the weekends seems tight (I only drive by, my motivation doesn't get me there on weekends) so I only go during the week. We will continue to go until we completely lose our motivation. Maybe we will try a class everyone is raving about someday. The front desk crew is pretty friendly, temp is a little warm but that helps melt fat right? Overall keep up the great work!!!! read more

I had a membership. The place was dirty, equipment was often in disrepair, the staff was always apathetic. I canceled at the end of my contract, and they charged me an extra month. And don't forget random extra fees during the year?! And what's with the a$shole that parks his Porsche SUV up on the curb next to the entrance every day? The guy obviously works there, and has issues that he feels like he needs to show off his car to everyone. The only thing going for this place is it's cheap membership fees, which go up after the first year (what is this place, a cable provider)?! read more

Ive been a member of many gyms over the years, beginning in 1970 in NYC, and then various NYC Sports Clubs and Boston Sports Clubs. When I moved to Stoneham, began looking for a gym, and at first was concerned by the price, which seemed low by NYC and CT standards. This is a no-frills place where you go to work out and leave. It has lots of treadmills and ellipticals, machines of every variety, weights etc. It's not a social club, although many of the members seem to have established friendships there. I take a senior exercise class 2x/week with trainer Dan Lyons, who we all really like. Complaints? Their TV on the treadmills is both limited and often poor quality. Their wi-fi urgently needs a professional overhaul. This is not a club. This is a bargain workout place. I like it a lot. read more

I have been a member at MG Fitness for many years. I am disgusted and disappointed with the cleanliness of the facility. As seen in the photographs the facility is covered in trash and has dust bunnies everywhere. People pay annual fees for this facility to be maintained, very disappointing. read more

If I could give no stars i would! I went in there to join after driving by so many times and seeing the $10 a month. But i wanted to go in and ask some questions and then join. I left my family outside because we had other errands to run....went in and said i would like to join and have a few questions. The lady said the gal that normally does that isnt here and did i know the application was online and i should really fill it out on there. I said i came in to join and she kept pushing me to go online...well guess what i didnt join! She just couldnt be bothered with "all that paperwork" as she said...so i cant be bothered to give my business to them! read more

I have been a member of this location for 4 years. I commute for 20 minutes from a city full of gyms because I feel so comfortable here. A great gym starts at the front desk and the staff here is amazing. They have all of the right equipment. Cleaning staff do a great job both in the locker room and on the equipment. They have a diverse membership where everyone belongs. I love MG Fitness! read more

From the front end staff who greet you as you walk in (hi Lisa and Jimmy) to the plentiful amount of cardio machines (truly two rows of treadmills- I've never had to wait) to the classes with the best in the business for so little money! Really nice gym, been going for a couple of years now. Parking is usually never a problem and they always have plenty of machines open. Only complaints (not even that serious) are that I always have a problem with the wi-fi. It will work fine and then 5 minutes later I get a "connection failure" on my phone and constantly have to juggle back and forth between "mikes gym" and " mikes gym 2g" networks. Maybe just certain areas of the gym don't get a good connection? I don't know. The only other problem is that the steam room in the ladies room doesn't work. I asked the front desk about it and the response was "yeah we've had people complain but its not going to be fixed" and this was probably a year or so ago. Again, it's not the deciding factor, but it would be nice to have steam room. Overall, its a real nice gym. Maybe some more weekend classes would be nice too if possible :) read more

I go to this gym because: a) I can walk to it from my house and b) it is CHEAP! All I ask for is a variety of cardio machines that work, and MG Fitness delivers that. Yes, it can get crowded with a questionable crowd from January through March. No, it is not a particularly visually pleasing place. But it gets the job done. I have tried a couple of the fitness classes. Zumba was great for the first few classes, but I find the teacher incredibly repetitive. Spin is great but come early - there are only a few bikes packed into a tiny space. read more

Great local gym! You feel like part of the family/community. Not a lot of gyms like this anymore. Non-intimidating, friendly, knowledgeable staff. Whatever you do....do NOT sign up at this gym. Not only does it seem extremely ghetto..but I went in to sign up months ago - thinking I might like it there - but no...as soon as I got in there and was talking to the lady at the desk about signing up and then some douchebag dude that was working out (who was clearly listening to our convo) came over and said just sign up !!!! Been going here for about a year now. I do not ever plan on changing gyms. This place is great for anyone with any fitness goal. It's a place SERIOUS enough for body builders to have the sufficient tools to make gains and RELAXED enough to where no one in the gym ever critizises one another. I've been here for a little while and have never had a problem with the other gym members. They are all very respectful to one another and most keep to themselves. I would say the only thing this gym does NOT have that I really wish it did would be a general updated/cleaner look. Of course that costs a lot of money, but I really hope they plan on doing so in the upcoming years. ----PROS---- - Plenty of parking - Open layout - Lots of mirrors - Very wide variety of machines and cardio machines - People here put the weights back where they belong, unlike other gyms - Plenty of free weights/plates - Sauna, shower, lots of lockers, tanning - Very cheap membership that comes w/ tanning, yoga, pilates, zumba, other programs - Great hours - Daycare during certain hours - Great physical trainers!!! ----CONS---- - Place has a general unkept look to it, from the lockers to the gym area - A lot of machines have missing pins and you can't read most of the #s - Some of the heavier dumbbells are starting to fall apart (60lbs+) - Clips, machine pins, and cable attachments (ropes, bars, etc) are often missing or scattered throughout the gym -Could use more squat racks. I haven't been a member for too long, but I joined because of their promotional price - $10/month for a year, and then it bumps to $20/month. Large, clean space with tons of equipment and cardio machines. Some of the treadmills are even equipped with TVs. Parking lot is large, and hours are broad enough to accommodate most people's schedules. MG Fitness doesn't pretend to be a BSC or LA Fitness; you're getting a good value for the money. read more

great inexpensive gym for my needs: 1. aerobic (treadmills, elliptical, stair climbers) galore 2. simple anaerobic (cybex, life fitness etc stationary machines). 3. friendly staff 4. assortment of clients (young, old, buff, buff-challenged) 5. opens at 5a 6. did I mention insanely affordable?? and w the insurance plan yearly credit, makes it a no-brainer. cannot comment on the lockers/bathrooms, aerobic/yoga classes, lifting-area since I haven't used them. MG fitness is a good gym. I was going to blast fitness but they closed and transferred me to MG fitness. The only loss is MG does not offer daycare in the evening so now I have to find another gym yet again. Maybe they should hire someone for the evening daycare to solve a lot of problems and probably take in more money read more

I've been going to MG since it was Mike's Gym. I started at the Medford club taking Dina's kickboxing class and now I've been at the Wakefield club for about 4 years. I absolutely love the classes offered. Rose and Joie are the absolute best! They play the best music, have awesome energy and great motivational attitudes. I never want to miss their classes and wish they taught more! They helped me lose 30 pounds for my wedding! (The gym itself could use some improvements) but I can't say enough about the classes and the instructors!!! read more

I really don't know why everyone is bashing this gym. I been going here for 5 years and not one time did i experience anything bad. The dumbbell area is a little small but i have had any problems here. the equipment works. Nothing fancy but you don't need anything fancy. I love the dumbbells that are available. The one minor bad thing is that the water fountains are kind of warm... just bring your own water. oh and also the little middle school kids are annoying as they just fool around and get in the way but thats not the gyms fault. read more

Was a member for 6 years. Was a decent gym for people serious about weight training. Place turned into a Planet Fitness. They blast 80's music, everything is yellow and purple, I've had multiple old people and the manager yell at me if you lift heavy weights and toss them down (it apparently hurts members ears), most of the equipment is junk, most of the free weights are junk (they're too cheap to buy new ones they do a half ass job and weld the broken ones). Bottom line, wouldn't recommend unless you're a young teenager learning to lift or a senior citizen because a membership is only 10 bucks. You get what you pay for... read more

I've been using MG Fitness in Wakefield for a couple of months now since I started a new job in neaby Woburn. I use the squat rack, barbells, dumbbells, chest-supported row and the calf raise machines. That's all. The guys who train here are big and strong, unlike in my previous gym -- Beacon Hill Athletic Club by North Station -- where the guys were willowy, never pushed themselves and read magazines in-between sets. I consider MG to have an usually intense atmosphere, at least in my part of the gym, which is almost always by the free weights. No, there is no grunting. Well, maybe occasionally. For cardio, I run trails and showshoe. So I couldn't care less about the state of MG's cardio equipment...or their decor or whether they provide lavendar scented rubber duckies as shower room pleasantries. I train late in the evening -- 8+ PM -- and I have always found the locker room dry and clean. Come winter, it might be a different story. If so, I will update this post. No issues with parking. For $10 a month, I am getting terrific value for the money. Updated 1/26/2011: It has been two months of winter now. The parking lot is more congested with the "new year resolution folks" having signed up. I have happily noticed that they use mostly the cardio equipment and machines and leave the free weights and squat racks alone. The locker rooms have been decently maintained. But there are patches of wintry stuff on the floor and I have gotten to wearing gym slippers. read more

I joined this gym because it was $10 a month. It's hardly worth that. Even though it's a gym and I expect a certain aroma when entering one, this one has a constant unclean stench to it. They have a small free weight area that is always monopolized by the stereotypical meathead. They do have a lot of treadmills, but most of the other cardio machines are severely outdated. Personal TV's are only on treadmills, and the community TV's they have hanging from the ceiling are all tuned to the same channel, normally cartoons or soap opera. Another annoying tendency with this gym is that they close down/close early during snow storms, even with less than 6 inches. The other MG Fitness in Medford would be open but Wakefield would close. I'm not asking for the gym to stay open during a blizzard but if we get a couple of inches of snow, shouldn't it be expected that a business with paying members is open? Be careful when signing a contract, I just canceled mine but it was such a hassle. The desk staff barely know what's going on, and she had to call her boss, 3 times while I was there. I went in giving them the 30 days notice to cancel my membership. They insisted that I had to buy out my contract, even though I joined up in January, and the current contract is set to expire December 31. I ended up paying the $5 buy out just to get out of there. The desk woman insists that I'll be able to use the gym through January without any additional charge. (Which doesn't make any sense, by their own rules, I'm buying out of my contract through January, I shoudln't have access to the gym past Dec 31) I'm pretty sure I'll see a charge from MG Fitness on my statement come Jan 1. I am going to contact my credit card company to see if there is anyway to block any future charge just to be sure. read more

It isn't super fancy, the parking lot is a mess and they aren't open very late. But they do have good classes, the machines are always available because there are so many of them, people leave you alone and let you do your thing and the price is great. read more

I love this gym. My trainer, Karen, is amazing. If you are looking for a great trainer i HIGHLY recommend her. All of the treadmills are brand new, many have tv's and many of the weight machines are new as well. They also offer classes and have TRX. Super cheap to join and they have a tanning booth as well. I had a membership at Blast fitness in Saugus Ma. They closed down so I cancelled my membership. I got an email to verify it. On my bank statement I had a charge of 20.99 for MG fitness in Wakefield. I called them and they told me you should of got a letter in the mail that your membership got transferred over to us. Never received anything I just cancelled when I realized Blast closed. So they thought it would be alright to deduct money from my account for a gym I never been to in another city without my authorization. I had to call my bank and file a complaint. Stay away from this place and the people working are no help and there isn't a phone number to help you. read more

Went for a few weeks with a friend. Too small, lacks variety of equipment, slightly on the dingy side. Class variety was lacking. No babysitting. I guess for $10 you can't complain. I joined the RAC instead, much better gym way more classes. It's good if your just working out I guess. read more

They keep your credit card information unlocked behind the counter. I have been disputing payments with this place for over 2 yrs. every time I bring a bank statement to prove payment it's ok thank you your all set ill make a note blah blah but 2 yrs later this is continuing so I decide to cancel which they refuse to do bc of said dispute. A manger available nope only business days between 2-9. During this Convo the guy behind the counter pulls out my info card which is not locked that clearly has my name address and my credit card number so I asked why that would be there and apparently it is standard for all customers. Every persons personal info including their credit card number is right there behind the desk unlocked! Very unprofessional and unsecure! read more
