Been a member for many 10+ years and for someone who has been a gym goer my entire life and has never had a problem with anyone. Unfortunately on this particular day a clunk head was slamming weights near me. When he was done with his set I asked if he was done with his set. He replied with a few choice words as he got 2" from my face. I told him I would wait until he was finished. This jackass wasn't done trying to be a bully. So I said something to him in his ear so only he could hear it. Told him in a very calm matter...if he wants, we could resolve the issue outside the gym. I then left the gym and went to my car. A few minutes later..The manager ran outside after me and told me she is canceling my membership and calling the police bc the coward clunk head said I threatened him. She never asked me what happened. I asked her if the gym happen to have video of the incident and if she would be kind enough to go look at the video and then call me back before she makes such a rash decision and she would find out that the guy aggressively got in my face. No one got hurt. No one got into a fight, just a few words that got me banned. I used to like this gym a lot but I will say i had a community of friends that I would see each day. Joe, Sonny, Peter, Tara etc.. unfortunately PF did an absolute disgraceful job in handling this. I have asked the manager (very rude and careless) not a good combination if she would give me contact information for her regional manager. "Nope" she said we are not allowed to give you her email , phone number or anything else on who I could speak to about this matter. I have made 6 calls now and still haven't received any response. This review is specifically for a female staff member who was working the front desk the afternoon of Jan 29th. She was very unpleasant and rude. She declared that she needs an additional payment method on file (apparently having access to my bank account is not enough) and when I said I don't have a credit card on me today, questioned if I don't have one in the car and declared I would not be allowed in if I didn't give the information. Excuse me, I have already been billed for the month so I should be able to use the gym. I mentioned this, but she stated it was 'irrelevant'. You don't come with a policy one day (which is problematic in itself, asking for multiple payment methods), push it down the throat of a customer rudely as they walk in, and threaten not to let them use the service they have already paid for. This is a very good Planet Fitness. They keep it clean and well maintained, and the staff are polite and professional. I typically go in the morning and the clientele are mostly respectful. However, the afternoon/evening crowd mostly do not follow basic gym etiquette. Weights are lying around, people are hogging machines while carrying on conversations, and nobody wipes anything when they're done. Also, they have a ton of hip abductor machines that hardly get used and only one fly machine. I've never been to a PF that has more than one fly machine, but it is always occupied. Would also be nice if they added a side lateral machine. Overall though they have a good selection of machines. Overall, this place ticks more boxes than any other PF in the area (I've been to Billerica, Burlington, Revere, Woburn, Wilmington). 5 stars if they had 2.5lb incremental dumbbells like Woburn. read more

Customer service at this gym leaves a lot to be desired. I was a member at the Reading, MA location for two years. I cancelled my membership on January 1, 2021, since I had not even visited the gym in a year, mostly due to COVID. Three days after cancelling, I was charged $39 for "club fees". I spoke with two different female employees, requesting that they reverse this charge. I was told the charge when through on the day that I cancelled, and their policy is no refunds! Obviously, someone there would have the authority to issue a credit, but they refuse to do so. How about doing the right thing?! read more

I did enjoy this gym as a regular member but not any longer. This location is under new management and the staff is unresponsive and often rude to basic questions such as repeated requests to sanitize equipment and restrooms. Trash piling over, smells of urine and toilets clogged in restroom. I believed the motto Planet Fitness promotes "judgement free zone," I was wrong. There Is cursing and loitering in the open and the atmosphere feels hostile. No visible staff and when you provide feedback it is dismissed. As a woman, it's important to me to find a gym where I can feel safe in. I checked out this gym as it had good reviews but from what I experienced lately things must've changed after new management. Walking in the main workout area I have witnessed many verbal altercations particularly with older men screaming homophobic slurs at members with no intervention from staff members. One particular one went violent and police were called. With these altercations, it's clear the new staff hasn't been trained in handling these types of events and shows prejudice with their decisions. Not only is the atmosphere more violent in the main exercising areas but the women's bathrooms have been going downhill for a while. I have seen instances of needles, men walking in on women showering, and toilets clogged with toilet paper everywhere. With this new management and the direction this place is headed I am changing gyms as I am scared how much worse it will get. read more

This is regarding the Reading, MA location...This gym doesn't have enough equipment. I know they are trying to keep the hard core lifters away but a couple more preacher curl and chest/reverse fly machines, etc. would be nice. There are also a lot of members who obviously have never worked out before spending too much time taking up equipment but doing nothing. It's also a gym etiquette-free zone. Lots of people "using" weights and machines while they are texting or doing other things with their phones opposed to working out. read more

Friendly, fast, educational staff. Smells clean. Good Oversight: They keep an eye open to make sure all is running correctly. The management has worked with the town board of health to reopen the showers that were closed due to COVID-19. I am so grateful for that! Internet access: I see folks complaining about the lack of WiFi. It's not necessarily Planet Fitness's fault! My phone has direct access to the internet, so I can bypass their wifi. And even with that direct access, my signal strength there is AWFUL. I wish the merchants here would get together and ask the landlord to get better cell service. The owner has cash on hand: They just installed brand new lighting in the parking lot, which btw, sometimes stay on even during the day, which is wasteful. Heard of light pollution? It's not healthy for the planet's fitness. Pros and cons: I use this location, Wilmington (24 hour), Burlington, and others. The one near Winchester is nearby but icky. A favorite thing here is the water fountain that accommodates water bottles. Environmental love!! Plus, love the black card perks! My biggest complaint is access: Due to my health constraints, I wish they stayed open 24 hours or even daily til 10 every night, but oh well. But in general, I have to commend the company for honoring their black card universal access. (In comparison, all Golds gyms in Boston belong to the same Gold's franchise--but none of them will honor universal access to "outsider" Golds customers. I can name other instances of Golds gym fraud. Just watch them carefully. They have lots of tricks, like not giving you a copy of your contract, in which they charge you more money than they say they will.) Pizza: I read that during COVID-19 the parent company is still supplying free pizza; however, it is currently being distributed to first responders. I love that! It is kind, makes sense in terms of crowding, and the pizza perk is important to me. Yeah, I know that's strange. But it's true. Spelling errors: One thing that irks me, and gets me pretty *judgmental* about the parent company, is that in their advertising, they spell that word as if we lived in England--not NEW England!!! LOL Please fix the spelling on any new materials! Locker rooms: I also wish that all locations would color code (or "colour," if you prefer the queen's spelling) the locker room entrances!!!! I constantly live in fear of accidentally tromping into the men's. I know from overhearing other folks, I'm not the only one thinking this! Good gym, well-equipped, the equipment is relatively new and in good shape. Staff is well-trained and friendly and the WiFi generally works well. Locker rooms decent though the men's lockers definitely get crowded in the AM. Showers are just OK, decent water pressure, curtains are pretty tattered. The parking lot does get very full on weekends, especially when REI next door is busy. But I've never not been able to park. Most of the customers keep to themselves and their workouts but at times it becomes a bit of a social club - on the weekends especially - some members tend to hang out and use exercise machines as lounge chairs and coffee holders while they chit chat. The Dunkin Donuts next door will taste much better AFTER your workout. read more

Just joined after being a member of Boston Sports Club for around 8 years. Unlike BSC Lynnfield, PF Reading is clean, well lit and doesn't have that moldy gym smell (like BSC does). When I signed up all the options and charges / possible charges were thoroughly explained. An excellent all around basic gym. My one gripe. I signed up for the prepaid $199 one year membership, the only membership where you don't have to give them access to your banking info. I actually wanted a PF Black membership, but that requires giving them by checking account routing and account numbers. Nope. Not happening. Ever. I actually told them I would pay a year Black Card membership UPFRONT, but they wouldn't do it. So they cost themselves money. It's one of the better PF's I have been too. Staff if friendly. It is clean. The other members can be inconsiderate as far as hogging dumbbells and sitting on equipment while using their phones but that is not the gyms fault. Parking can be tough especially in the winter. That is because there is an REI next door. If you plan to go in the early afternoon please be ready to deal with the 'sword guy'. He is there every time I go around midday. He takes over the dumbell area(which is pretty small) and does his warmup routine which includes pretending to swing a sword. He is doing a karate warmup using half the area while others are trying to use the dumb bells. This is after he throws his phone on a bench he doesn't use so nobody else can use it(again there is limited equipment). He should be doing that in the back. The freeweight area is not the area for this. They also allow him to run around the gym with a 45lb dumbell raised above his head. They also let him run around the place bouncing a medicine ball like a basketball. yesterday he was running around with a weight bar in one hand over his head. he also likes to walk around carrying 45lb plates which he then smashes against the wall when putting down. I see him talking to the gym manager sometimes. I assume they are friendly which is why this is allowed. it is dangerous and aggravating. nevermind the fact that if someone else accidentally slams the weight stack they will get lunk alarmed. read more

I was trying to be reasonable and just asked for the yearly membership of $39 and the $10 for that month to be refunded and they refused. This location has limited parking in the morning as the lot is shared with REI and DD. I've had to drive around the lot a few times. The inside is always clean but hot! I get the they don't like "lugs" but I'm a tiny woman and I max out the barbell weights they have there. I wish they had a rower but for $20, still worth the price! It just seems that there's multiples of the same machines. First time I went, I had all *My money stolen from my wallet in the locker so I no longer bring it in with me. Just re-signed with this location after a medically required absence. It is under new management and suffering. I go weekday mornings exclusively and used to see the girls making the rounds with dust busters cleaning under the machines. Now there are dust bunnies every where AND don't look up;( The ceiling is covered in dust and the first time they turn on the A/C - it will all be swirling. Looking for another option. Left the Woburn facility because of locker room smells and being cheap with using the A/C in the summer. read more

I'm not a big fan of low-cost treadmill/weight farms filled with meat heads staring at me while I run/lift. I was convinced that PF was full of them. Even the attempts to destroy this image with the "I lift things up and put them down" commercials couldn't change my mind. Then my bf joined PF at this location with a black card membership so that he could visit multiple locations as he needed. And because my gym was closed this weekend for the holiday, he asked me to go work out with him. Needless to say, I was reluctant. But it was snowing outside, so running outdoors was not a safe option. And so I went with him. And was pleasantly surprised by a few things: 1. Parking availability 2. Large, open facility with plenty of cardio / strength training equipment, including free weights 3. A 30-minute rotational work out area 4. A 12-minute ab exercise area 5. Large ladies' locker room complete with showers We were greeted by a personable employee at the front desk, signed in quickly, and headed off to run and lift without being gawked at. Pass on this place if you expect to be treated fairly. They conveniently change the rules whenever you try to make a change in your membership, or God forbid, cancel your membership. Once they get your Bank Account number, you can't stop them from debiting your account. Twice they have hit me with extra fees, including today when I tried to cancel my membership and they charge me $39.95 for cancelling. FYI. I moved to Louisiana and I expend 3 months trying to transfer my account over the one in Louisiana, no one seen to be helpful I called 4 different times and all they could say was you have to cancel in person , but how could I? if I was living in louisiana I went to the one in louisiana and they couldn't do anything because apparently I had to go to Salem or send them a letter so I was charged $104 of overdraft fees because they keep taking money out when I told them that I needed it to cancel, this is not a good gym to sign up because they don't give a damn about how they get your money and the customer service sucks. What a scam Planet Fitness is. My daughter called to cancel her membership. She specifically asked the girl on the phone if there was anything else she needed to do and was told NO. Now two months later she is still getting billed and gets hit with a $39 fee for membership. The GM Denise was USELESS in trying to get this resolved and backed off due to her employee's mistake in not giving the proper information. She made no effort in trying to get this resolved nor give us her bosses name to contact telling us to go on line and fill out a form. STAY away form these large gyms, where they make their money by people who don't use the memberships. Small local gyms are better at treating you like a person. read more

Truly judgement free, everyone seems to mind their own fitness and it usually isn't too busy. Pretty decently priced, always clean, lots of TVs. Decent variety of machines for casual gym goers. I wish it was 24 hours like some of the other ones, but with the black card membership I can go to those! The wifi isn't fantastic but I usually use REI next doors free wifi, as less people are on it so my Netflix doesn't buffer. They have free pizza and bagels on some days, cool tshirt, and a free trainer (though you do need an appointment). Don't love the fact that they have tanning at a place geared toward wellness, but that's a personal preference. All in all, PF is great and I should definitely go more lol read more

Steve at the desk is amazing, he is always here early to open and tends to all the guests needs, they actually need more employees like him, anything he can do to make the members happy he does. There is a reason your local PF branch won't accept cash or checks as payment in advance. A key part of their business strategy is to use their ability to access your checking account to collect money from you by surprise - both during, and after, the terms of your membership contract. If - like most of us! - you're human, and you don't memorize your gym contract on the day you sign it, and maybe because you like the place you let your membership drag on a little longer than you originally planned, at some point you will probably get blindsided by a $29 annual fee. You might accept this as crappy but fair game, OR you might be thoroughly annoyed (like I was) and head straight to the PF service desk, to cancel your membership. When you cancel your membership, you will sign a "cancellation agreement". It has today's date on it, and a "date of last payment". You might walk away believing that because you just terminated your contract, as of today, you no longer owe them anything, and after the "date of last payment", they will no longer be able to access your account. One or two weeks later, you'll receive another bank statement and see that PF accessed your checking account three days after you cancelled your account, and they've withdrawn yet another month's fee. When you ask them to fix the mistake, they will stonewall. They'll say it wasn't a mistake, and they'll refer to the terms of the contract you had already terminated, saying that because (after receiving your bank statement) you didn't (go back in time and) cancel before the 10th of the month, they had a contractual right to bill you again. When you complain, they'll say that every PF branch follows these exact same policies, and that every manager all the way up to corporate will back them up. Then they'll refuse to tell you the names of those managers. They'll tell you to google it. (Go ahead, google "Planet Fitness complaints".) You might ask, do you think charging fees after cancellation is a reasonable way to treat people? Do you care about your reputation as a local business? Do you realize you're competing for customers against probably a dozen independent and/or locally controlled gyms in this town alone? The local PF owner, brand new to her position, will paraphrase the same script as her clerks: "I'm following the rules. All the branches do it the same way. I'm just doing what my boss tells me to do." Good luck to you, local Planet Fitness. On the first day that I drive by your location and see "Lease Available" taped to the window, I'll know that you at least followed the rules. read more

The reason for 1 star is simple - I asked of any possible charge increases, vaguely remembering that the person singing me up mentioned something about June changes. So I stopped by in May and asked about that, however I was told I shouldn't expect any changes. Should have read the fine print rather than ask employees... I got charged a $40 fee in June. When I called the manager, she claimed there was a miscommunication and she can't help.
