I think the first time I went to Mi Casita many moons ago, I tried one of the breakfast burritos and it was so big and so overwhelming that it scarred me mentally and emotionally (not really but I like to be dramatic sometimes). We pulled off of I-20 on our way home to Atlanta for a lunch stop based on promising reviews here on Yelp, and it was WELL worth the extra few minutes drive. The Townes van Zandt poster hanging in the front window is the first sign that you are in the right place. Delicious tacos (carnitas was great), a comically large burrito (also delicious), and some mighty fine chips and salsas (pineapple-habanero!) are waiting for you here in a tiny building in front of a bowling alley. Well butter my buns and call me Bruce Lee, 'cause I finished the Chuck Norris, albeit barely and perhaps via more chest hair pulling than I'd like to admit. As Bruce Lee would have said, "The highest art is no art." In that strain, the chefs here have truly mastered their technique and have then expanded their purview of Hispanic food in a way that is truly inspired, and by "inspired" I mean delicious. Everyone has raved about the tacos and the Chuck Norris burrito, which approved of its venue before it was created, but do not neglect the salsas on the bar, which are like little roundhouses of zazz to your face. I had again, the breakfast tacos and they are as good, if not betta, than Torchy's. Get the cilantro and onion added at no cost. Sorry to say, I was not impressed with my lunch here. The array of salsas is a great idea, but the three I tried (red, green, pineapple) while having great flavor were really too hot for the average consumer to enjoy. I like the serve yourself chips, but with flu season in full swing, I'm not so sure this is a great idea. Ordered the three taco plate with steak, chicken, and carne guisada and added onions and cilantro. The tacos were ok, but nothing to rave about. Steak was definitely the best. Chicken was bland and had a warmed-over taste. Carne guisada was too mushy and hot but not flavorful. As mentioned in another review, the rice was "out of the box" quality and there was nothing special about the refried beans. Fried avocado was really interesting and flavorful - probably the highlight of the meal. Environment is a very clean "hole-in-the" wall with outside seating and a big screen TV. Don't let the shanty exterior or enormous potholes in the parking lot scare you off...the traditional tacos and burritos are delicious. They have an extensive breakfast menu that they serve until 2 pm and a basic dinner menu that covers all the necessary bases. There are several appetizer choices from fried avocado to shrimp cocktail but only one dessert on the menu, flan. I could suggest expanding to another more creative dessert to add variety. Interior decor is reasonable and ambiance is very Tex-Mex chic with classic rock and some red dirt Texas rock mixed in paying quietly under the low roar of talking amongst customers. Appears very clean from the dining room and while standing at the counter placing your order you can see the entire working kitchen. I was not impressed by the rice or beans though...it tasted like something I could prepare in my kitchen from a box or can. I think I may be in love with this little house. My boy and I went for breakfast on Sunday and were very happy with what we found- friendly people and good food. We both ordered the breakfast burrito (mine with bacon and him with carne asada). When they came they were larger than our heads and tasted amazing. We were told that the owner makes everything from scratch and you can tell when you take your first bite. I tried the blackened fish tacos and I loved them! I decided to write a review after my second trip here because the first trip was pretty forgettable. I think it's so odd they only give you a single tortilla on most of the tacos (except the fish tacos). It's a complaint my boyfriend always brings up. I do like that they have complimentary chips and salsa. But again everything has been pretty forgettable until I tried the fish tacos today. Ordered the steak taco plate. The steak by itself was good but everything else was incredibly bland. The rice and beans were completely flavorless. I tried all 4 salsa options - three were spicy, one sweet, and I wasn't a fan of any of them. I felt the plates were a bit overpriced for the portion size and quality of the food. They're not expensive, but I'm used to getting a lot more for the same price. Service was very quick. Very first time here. Easy to find, plenty of parking...very modest outdoor appeal BUT it's very clean and nice atmosphere. I ordered the carne guisada plate and it was great. Fast friendly service. Me and all three kids ate for under 20$ and that's with us just ordering whatever we wanted. My kids had fish tacos (and loved them!) I was worries when they ordered them because kids don't usually enjoy fish...but there was nothing left on their plates. I will be back when in Longview. The name made me think this was a little abuelas Mexican type restaurant but it's actually a little hip taco place you might find outside of Austin. I would def recommend it!!! read more
