The owner is incredibly kind and she helped us pick some different options to try. We tried the new cheeseburger empanada 10/10 the sauce it comes with is so good. Personal favorite was the buffalo chicken empanada. They also have vegetarian options so we tried the cheese and onion. Dipping it into the chimichurri sauce is a must! For something sweeter we tried the apple walnut empanada and wowwww absolutely incredible. You have to have it warm and it's like you're eating a warm apple pie. Chicken milanesa was also huge and delicious. The aoili sauce makes it that much more delicious. There's maybe 1-2 seats inside and some outdoor seating. read more

Wow we finally tried this place and I am so glad we did! We got a sampling of flavors to try later that day at home. However we did ask for the bacon egg and cheese one heated up and it was so good for a breakfast option! Our favorite was the beef brisket, but the chicken, beef, and buffalo chicken were good as well. The crusts are excellent, and I really liked all the sauce options (we tried both chimis, the spicy, and the carrot hot sauce). Everything was tasty and heated up really well in our air fryer. I've gotten food from their food truck twice, and both times it was really good. We finally made a trip to the actual restaurant and it was worth the trip just for food. It's a small spot that appears to do most business as take out, but there's no are a few spots to eat at inside the restaurant and outside on the side walk. They have a number of options to choose from as they had empanadas with lamb, chicken, sweet potato and black bean, egg and bacon, and even a vegan option. Every empanada I tried was fantastic. They have a nice selection of dipping sauces and the two I tried were tasty. I wound up getting a Tres Leche cake that I enjoyed, and I also got some Spanish rice which was seasoned really well. I wanted to be excited about this place - funky Lawrenceville shop with a semi-novelty food item, pretty display/layout inside. Indeed, they sell many different empanada flavors (mostly meat but also some vegetarian). You can check out the entire array when you walk inside and it does make for some mouth-watering lunch shopping. But I was just underwhelmed by the empanadas themselves. I tried the chicken flavor and butternut squash flavor on two different days. Both were very doughy (can't go wrong there) and also pretty bland. The chicken one literally had no flavor whatsoever; the squash one had a bit of semi-sweet filling, but again mostly dough. Both times, I was left feeling like I had eaten a big fluffy biscuit, so a tasty snack but not really a proper lunch. You can buy sauces in small plastic containers for $1 each but this feels like a roundabout way to add flavor to something. The empanadas are already $5 each, so I'd expect them to come with more flavor rather than having to pay more just to add flavor via the sauce. I'd recommend that they bake some of the sauce flavor into the empanadas themselves. My favorite perk was the $7 deals for two of yesterday's empanadas. I was looking for a high carb Latin American/Argentinian dinner before a race, so Mi Empanada intrigued me. I tried the beef empanada, chicken empanada, peaches and cream empanada, polenta, Spanish rice, and a meringue alfajor. Everything was very tasty. I have to say the flavor of the food is improved by 2 or 3 fold if you microwave it after getting pickup. The beef empanada also has some pancetta and olives. It was juicy and flavorful. It goes very well with side dipping sauce, which is oily, garlicky, and full of herbs. The chicken empanada was also pretty good. The meat is tender and seasoned well. It's not too fatty nor too tough. The peaches and cream empanadas are so heavenly when heated. Peaches are fresh and vibrant. The cream is sweet and delicate, just incredible. Easily my favorite part of the meal. All the empanadas have a flaky shell that is a bit thick. It's quite different from the Venezuelan empanadas I have tried, but still great. The empanadas from Mi Empanada are more expensive for the portion but they are very tasty. Their sides are also great and the portions are quite good for the price. I'd recommend the polenta over the Spanish rice, since the latter is a bit blander. The polenta is buttery and rich, so you can't taste the grains. Their tomato sauce is excellent and flavorful. The rice is definitely better than any store bought option. Some tomatoes, peppers, and seasoning, but still pretty standard. I really enjoyed their imported alfajor. It's quite large for $3, and the dulce de leche inside is on point! So good. All in all, I would definitely recommend trying this place out. The stuff of dreams. I would give it more stars if I was able to. Go right now. Eat at Mi Empanada! For the uninitiated an empanada is basically a hand-held potpie. But in this case they have stuffed the empanada with meat, cheese veggies and sweets. Mi Empanada has great selection with options that should please most diets (vegetarian and vegan alike). This was first trip so I ran a small gamut: The Black and Sweet Potato had a wonderful combination of flavorful spice and sweetness. The Buffalo Chicken had a nice bite from tender chicken. And the Beef Empanada featured ground beef (and its marked as having some pork) and was simply melt in your mouth delicious. All of these fillings are wrapped in some of the best puff pastry I've ever had. Flaky, delicate yet somehow sturdy - I wanted to eat every single crumb. And one last thing to mention: while the food is delicious, its also beautiful. Take a moment to appreciate the artistry and care that goes into making these wonderful little pockets of awesome. Eating something that tastes as good as it looks is rare - but you can do that here! Mi Empanada also has a nice selection of sandwiches and sides. A cute little empanada shop on Butler Street. I ordered the buffalo chicken empanada and didn't get a sauce (they charge extra for sauces) because I didn't want to overpower the buffalo sauce. The worker warmed the empanadas for us, however they were barely warmer than room temperature. I did enjoy the empanada, but I could barely taste the buffalo flavor. I was looking for a place to have a takeout meal to go with the smoothie I just purchased down the street and decided upon this place. I placed an order through Grub Hub and it was just about ready when I arrived. The place is small and not set up for indoor dining. Instead there is an outdoor table and two chairs if you prefer to eat there. They have a frozen section where you can purchase a dozen frozen empanadas to cook at your own leisure. Otherwise, the ones they sell can be preheated in store for you. They have vegan options available here and are marked as such. I decided to try the roasted lamb, the spinach, and the sweet potato and black bean empanadas to try at home. I noticed that my Grub Hub order cost a little more and the nice counter lady told me that was their service fee. If I wanted in the future, just call them with a good lead time and they would have it ready for me. This way I wouldn't be charged tax. I thanked her and at her suggestion purchased a dessert which was a chocolate alfajor. That is basically a shortbread cookie filled with dulce de leche and covered in chocolate. She gave me my box and then offered me napkins. I inquired about paying for those since I thought there was a charge for them but she handed me a few for free. Once home I got to enjoy my empanadas. The roasted lamb was definitely my favorite followed by the sweet potato and black bean one. The spinach one was also very good. My trio of delights came with a side of chimichurri sauce which added a kick to the empanadas. That sauce is great for dipping or pouring them over the pastries. I was really blown away with the alfajor!! That chocolate covering made it taste so good I had a hard time putting it down. This is a great fast casual place to get a good meal for a fraction of the cost. Also you can enjoy delicious Argentina cuisine as well. Please note they do catering as well. They are located right on Butler Street in the old Deli on Butler storefront. The employee working was friendly and let me look around. I saw that they had discounted random empanadas from the day before in the cooler. I decided to try 1 sweet potato and black bean, and 1 spinach. I got my boyfriend a chicken one to go too. My total was $9, and all 3 empanadas (especially the chicken one) were HUGE. I didn't realize until I opened the boxes to heat them up how packed full of fillings they were. The spinach one was light and reminded me of spanikopita. I really liked it until I kept getting large pieces of peppercorn in it. Random bites were too peppery for me, but I still overall liked it. The sweet potato empanada was definitely my favorite. I loved the curry spices. I will definitely order more of these again. This shop opened their brick and mortar at a truly unfortunate time. I've been looking forward to their opening for months, and so amid the coronavirus closings, I wanted to show my support by purchasing some "take and bake" empanadas to go. I'm something of an empanada addict. I chose chicken, spinach, and ham & cheese. I cooked them at home (350 degrees for 30 minutes) so I can't speak to the shop's preparation or presentation. What I can speak to is the flavor. All three were delicious. The dough crisped up nicely, a little flakey but still enough weight/thickness that they didn't fall apart. Ham & cheese was my favorite. These suckers have the addictive quality of your favorite late night, post drinking snack. An infinitely tastier and more sophisticated Hot Pocket, but still the convenient handheld delivery. Spinach was awesome, it reminded me of all the things I like about spanakopita and had none of the negatives. The dough on this was thicker, so it held up nicely and didn't fall apart or crumble into a million pieces. It seemed a little overfloured and needed a few extra minutes in the oven, but not a big deal. The chicken was yummy as well, plenty of meat and flavor. My only complaint is the shape and way it was assembled (all the empanadas are assembled and edged slightly differently so you can easily tell them apart). Chicken is finished on top, so it's a fatter shape, not as easy to hold or dip. Not a big deal at all, I forked this one up and enjoyed it just as much. The empanadas came with containers of seasoned dipping oil that was incredible. Make sure you try it out. I ordered some extra empanadas to freeze and bake later during these weeks of quarantine at home. I've enjoyed empanadas from the now-closed Caribbean restaurant downtown, Pirata. Gaucho hits the spot as well. But Mi Empanada is my new go-to for feeding my empanada addiction. Check them out, you won't be disappointed! read more
