We made it safely to Shelter Cove on October 10, and for the first time in either of our lives we ate Venezuelan! Everything was soooo good! We liked Mi Mochima so much the first time that we went back for dinner last Sunday. Another delicious dinner, with shredded beef and flank steak, followed with flan. Venezuelan food on the lost coast of California...who knew?? Be sure to try the fish and savory plantains! By the way...on Thursday I left my credit card there. I had already started using another card, so I didn't realize it was missing for a week! My account said Mi Mochima was the last place I used it. I called them and they very nicely told me they had one card left behind, quickly confirmed it was mine, and promised to mail it to me the next day!! Such great service!

Amazing food and great service. They really make you feel at home. My wife is from Venezuela and we always make sure when we stop in shelter Cove that we go to this restaurant. Try their specials, be adventurous and try all of their food, everything is delicious and tasty. Feel free to ask for recommendations and this is the best Venezuelan food from San Francisco on up north to Mendocino.

We stopped here after our hike. We came on a Sunday. They were open at 12. I sat down and ordered. I ordered the yucca fries, the arepa cumanesa, and a homemade pineapple water. Everything was fresh and super delicious. The arepa was warm and you can tell it was freshly made. The service was great. The server was friendly and brought us waters right away. We sat outside for the incredible coastal views. They had ample outdoor seating, grassy area with some chairs, bar chairs, and seating inside. The bathroom was clean and tidy. The server said that the lunch menu is seperate from dinner, so that means they have a lot of options for both meals. We will definitely be back for dinner.

Fair warning- this place is popular! We ended up sitting upstairs and OMG it was very hot. They have fans but it didn't help much. We really wanted to try it and were told it was worth it, but I hate being hot. The food and service were both excellent. I highly recommend the empanadas and almost ordered some to go !

Mi Mochima is such a delight! I had the fresh fish and sangria, and they were both delicious. The sangria is probably the very best I've ever had in my life! The staff are attentive and friendly, and the views of the ocean are lovely. Highly recommend!

This was a really special place!!! You can dine outside!!! The staff were wonderfully kind and very attentive. The food.... The Very Best in the Cove!!!! We Will dine here every time we visit Shelter Cove

Delightful experience. Food was fresh & delicious - we were lucky to visit during a huge run of bluefin tuna, which was a delicious daily special. Venezuelan beef & tostones were also top notch. Service was great even though there was only one server. Lots of locals were there which u I s always a good sign. Views are awesome.

OMG! The food here is soooooo good! We could tell that it was made with lots of love! There's a loving spirit here that is easily felt as soon as we set down! BRAVO! to the design ideas and forethought in implementing a restaurant business in Shelter Cove that reflects the beauty and culture of Venezuela. DELICIOUS! The service also provided attention to detail as well! We WILL be back!:-)

This place is such a special spot! We were lucky enough to snag seats at the bar on a busy night, and since we weren't in any rush, we got to soak in the whole experience. Every bite was incredibly fresh, thoughtfully prepared, and absolutely unforgettable. My only regret is that I don't live closer--I would be requesting this hidden gem on the Lost Coast every chance I got! read more
Amazing Venezuelan food with a view. I ordered a beet salad and my meal was fresh, healthy, and delicious. My husband ordered a Mi Bowl, which he loved as well. They have both indoor and outdoor seating. We sat outside and the weather was perfect for this. We sat at a table with an ocean view. We also enjoyed a glass of wine. The service was excellent and everyone that worked here was friendly and welcoming. There were a lot of food options to choose from. The food came out quickly. There was even live music, which was nice! Highly recommend this place for dinner! read more

Fabulous Venezuelan food in a tiny town on the Lost Coast. We got glasses of red sangria (delicious and inexpensive), tostones, empanadas, and the grilled chicken plate...wow. So much flavor, lots of garlic and freshness. The service was excellent- it's a small, busy place, so don't be impatient! There are tables outside with a little ocean view - we sat inside since it was so packed. Kudos to our server who handled a lot of weird, entitled people trying to order at the bar or after the kitchen was closed...if you're on vacation in a small town, beware that places close early! Anyway, 5/5 recommend! read more

Was excited about trying a Venezuelan restaurant. Did not expect the food to bland, but it really was.

We got here just in time for sunset. Great menu with a few vegan options. We ordered parilla por dos, rockfish with fried plantain buns, and pincho de Cameron. A bit of a wait for food cooked to order but well worth it! & our serve was very attentive. Delicious & generous portions, we took some home. Enjoyed with cider & hard kombucha. A gem of a restaurant to discover here on our first visit to Shelter Cove! Thursday is movie night! read more
This location is excellent. Amazing views of the ocean. They offer outside seating with a glass windbreak for wind protection, as well as inside seating. The servers worked together well, and as the place filled up, they increased their pace and kept everyone happy. The food was very good. The beef empanadas was made with sweet corn and combined with the seasoned meat was so yummy. The sliders using plantains as buns was a novel idea, the plantains were not as sweet as expected, but still very good. Definitely enjoyed the sangria and the Eel River blonde beer. A fun night with good fun and a beautiful view. read more

We went here for dinner and we were so happy to have chosen this place. We both ordered a Mi Bowl and it was DELICIOUS! I got shrimp bowl and my husband got chicken. The chicken bowl was both our favorite. We also had the mini arepas. They were so warm and delicious. read more
I was not expecting much, as there's maybe 2-3 options for food in town, but dang, does this place bring the flavor! I would drive out that treacherous 40 minute winding road just to come back and get some of this food!!! THAT'S how food it is. For starters, they have some wonderful appetizers and a pretty decent beer and wine list, though they were our of a lot of them as we came at 8:30pm (they close at 9). We got the empanaditas, a Mexican ale and a sangiovese. Very full pour on the glass of wine (okkkurrr, I see you!). The empanaditas were lightly fried and fluffy, full of 1 each of beef, fish, and cheese, accompanied by an excellent green sauce that had a chimichurri like taste. We devoured them. On the entrees, we opted for the bistec and the camaroes (the server said those were her two favorites). The bistec, or beef, was one of the most flavorful, delicious pieces of meat I've ever had in my life! Topped with onions and served with white rice, black beans, and plantains, this dish is a must order. I don't know what they seasoned it with, but I would sure like to! The camorones were equally excellent, covered in a garlic and seasoning marinade, served with Cole slaw, plantains, and little fried disks (maybe potato or more plantain? - my husband housed those down before I had a chance to taste lol) and a lime on the side. Muy delicioso! To end, we did a slice each of the vanilla and coconut flan. The vanilla was OK, but the coconut was creamy, silky, deliciousness! Light on the sauce and with a shredded coconut bottom. I had dreams about that flan! An amazing hidden gem, don't miss this place if you're out here! read more

We came here for our Anniversary, and we're so glad we did. We sat at the bar upstairs facing the ocean - beautiful view. Our server was Kristina and she was wonderful. We ordered wine, sangria, beef and cheese empanadas, side of black beans, tostones (amazing!), and the bisctec. Everything we ordered was delicious and bursting with flavor! I only wish they were open on Monday and Tuesday when we were still in town so we can come back before we leave back the Bay. We can't wait to come back! read more
Nice place right across the street from where I was staying. It was a Thursday and I had an early dinner. The Catch was on for the day so the menu was different from Mi Mochima. Nonetheless, the food was great. The grilled pineapple pork loin was moist and flavorful. But the fish and chips was definitely the star. They were nicely battered and fried and were not oily at al. They came with fries and cole slaw and both were good accompaniments to the fish. They have a decent selection of wine and beer but they actually had sangria which was not on the menu (I saw another table with it that's how I found out). The patio where I sat had a nice view of the ocean which made the experience even better. I just wish they had more umbrellas or shade to block out some of the sun. Hannah who served me was very friendly and accommodating. I could tell that she was smiling behind her mask. I would definitely go back to actually try the Mi Mochinga menu when I'm in the area. read more
Who would have thunk we would go with Venezuelan food after our 3 day Lost Coast hike? Neither did we but was recommended by our Lost Coast tour guide. I loved the service of this quaint, family owned restaurant the best. It was top-notch service and our waitress was adorable! She recommended us the hallaca and burger and we ordered two empanadas on the side. I think the empanadas were the show-stopper. I've never had empanadas with such crispy crusts! Usually they're dry and thick. ($6 each - a little pricey though!) The hallaca is like a large tamale. I would have liked if there was meat stuffed inside. The moist corn masa was a little too thick for me, but it was certainly quality and homemade. Lastly, the burger - meat inside was underseasoned and definitely a little overcooked. Still delicious with their green cilantro sauce but I was aching for a juicier, tender burger. What's cool is that they use plantains instead as a bun! Again, lovely view at a quaint restaurant. Great A+++ service without the pretension. Come support a family owned business here after your LC hike! read more

It says they are open til 9 pm today but I showed up at 6:00 pm Came in on Mother's Day to sit outside, about 15 minutes after waiting a lady walked outside to Inform me that "we are closed early for Mother's Day, mothers wanna spend time with their kids too you know?" I responded by saying "you could have let me know sooner thanks" Soon after the younger server went outside to say "You don't have to be rude we have had our schedule posted all week! We are tired the kitchen as been open all day, you can go to the pizza place or gyppo sorry our kitchen is now closed!" A server should never call me rude my response wasn't rude they could have let me know instead of making me wait to tell me I can eat there All I wanted was one plate of food And they should never complain about their job It's a special day they should be nicer if anything Essentially I'm being refused service Clearly everyone dining was a "mom" with family And I didn't look like a "mom" today I felt rejected & offended since there's plenty of people dining inside & I'm certain I was refused service Could it have been that I didn't have my son with me? Or that I had three dogs with me ? Did they assume im not a mom because I'm not with my offspring? I noticed plenty of people still dining there, I showed up alone without my son, So the server assumed im not a mom. Who knows either way They should treat local home owners of shelter cove much better than that I won't be coming back read more

We've been coming here since Blu and Maria opened it a few years ago, and have been more than pleased to see how they've continually built it into a classy restaurant with quality food and service. My wife and I ate there again last night, and it was superb. The staff were attentive, positive, and friendly. The food was great (we shared the Bolognese with side salad), and the wine prices very reasonable. The Bolognese was new for us, since we usually go for Maria's pescado, but the fact it had "homemade sauce" caught our eye. It was great and went well with the glass of Pinot Noir we also ordered. The big surprise was how good the homemade blue cheese salad dressing was! Magnificent! An added touch of class was the violin player, who serenaded us as we ate. Sitting outside, with violin music, great food and wine, and an ocean view! Wow! it doesn't get much better. But what made our dinner totally enjoyable was our waitress Dani, who served us promptly and with a genuine smile and happiness. Thank you! I've recently posted about all the disappointing new restaurants we've visited in the Del Mar (San Diego) area, and it's so good to find a top-notch, genuine place here in Humboldt County. Thank you Blu and Maria! read more

This is our first time visiting Shelter Cove and we dined here on November 10th. It is a nice restaurant and we ordered the pabellon criollo for dinner and it was delicious. For the appetizer, we ordered the arepitas and it was delicious. Our server, Grace M., was courteous and the customer service was good. The next time that we come back to Shelter Cove, we will dine here again. read more

My parents owned the previous restaurant in this location, the Chart Room and ran it for many years. They sold the restaurant several years ago, when my mother became sick and the new owner did many upgrades, selling the restaurant again. These new owners have opened Mi Mochima, a wonderful restaurant filled with my own father's woodworking and the lovely charm of the family that now owns it. I was very impressed with the quality of the food and the cleanliness of the restaurant. I had the Venezuelan spareribs which came with potatoes and salad and a wonderful sauce. The whole meal was spectacular and the service impeccable. They serve great local beer and have great views. Keep in mind, you're far from the city, and importing food can be pricey - so the prices on the menu have to reflect that cost. read more
