We made it safely to Shelter Cove on October 10, and for the first time in either of our lives we ate Venezuelan! Everything was soooo good! We liked Mi Mochima so much the first time that we went back for dinner last Sunday. Another delicious dinner, with shredded beef and flank steak, followed with flan. Venezuelan food on the lost coast of California...who knew?? Be sure to try the fish and savory plantains! By the way...on Thursday I left my credit card there. I had already started using another card, so I didn't realize it was missing for a week! My account said Mi Mochima was the last place I used it. I called them and they very nicely told me they had one card left behind, quickly confirmed it was mine, and promised to mail it to me the next day!! Such great service!

Amazing food and great service. They really make you feel at home. My wife is from Venezuela and we always make sure when we stop in shelter Cove that we go to this restaurant. Try their specials, be adventurous and try all of their food, everything is delicious and tasty. Feel free to ask for recommendations and this is the best Venezuelan food from San Francisco on up north to Mendocino.

We stopped here after our hike. We came on a Sunday. They were open at 12. I sat down and ordered. I ordered the yucca fries, the arepa cumanesa, and a homemade pineapple water. Everything was fresh and super delicious. The arepa was warm and you can tell it was freshly made. The service was great. The server was friendly and brought us waters right away. We sat outside for the incredible coastal views. They had ample outdoor seating, grassy area with some chairs, bar chairs, and seating inside. The bathroom was clean and tidy. The server said that the lunch menu is seperate from dinner, so that means they have a lot of options for both meals. We will definitely be back for dinner.

Fair warning- this place is popular! We ended up sitting upstairs and OMG it was very hot. They have fans but it didn't help much. We really wanted to try it and were told it was worth it, but I hate being hot. The food and service were both excellent. I highly recommend the empanadas and almost ordered some to go !

Mi Mochima is such a delight! I had the fresh fish and sangria, and they were both delicious. The sangria is probably the very best I've ever had in my life! The staff are attentive and friendly, and the views of the ocean are lovely. Highly recommend!

This was a really special place!!! You can dine outside!!! The staff were wonderfully kind and very attentive. The food.... The Very Best in the Cove!!!! We Will dine here every time we visit Shelter Cove

Delightful experience. Food was fresh & delicious - we were lucky to visit during a huge run of bluefin tuna, which was a delicious daily special. Venezuelan beef & tostones were also top notch. Service was great even though there was only one server. Lots of locals were there which u I s always a good sign. Views are awesome.

OMG! The food here is soooooo good! We could tell that it was made with lots of love! There's a loving spirit here that is easily felt as soon as we set down! BRAVO! to the design ideas and forethought in implementing a restaurant business in Shelter Cove that reflects the beauty and culture of Venezuela. DELICIOUS! The service also provided attention to detail as well! We WILL be back!:-)

I went up here over the weekend from the Bay Area and stopped by Mi Mochima for a couple glasses of wine, a beer, and some grub. It was almost closing time and they still managed to dish me out a couple plates of food. I can't remember the name of the plate I got, but it was kind of like a tamale. It has some amazing green sauce along side it, and it melted in my mouth. The full glass of wine that I got was delicious as well, and the local beer I housed down was just right. I had good conversation with the server, the manager, and some of the kitchen. My glasses had just broken previously and when they got word of it, the manager, Indiana, who happens to be adorable, grabbed some glue and with help of the rest of the staff they ended up teaming up, and fixing my glasses for me while I had a few drinks and a couple bites. Though I ended up breaking them again, they then helped me tape them so I could see when I rode my motorcycle home. The entire experience was good. Whether it was the jokes we were saying, the helping hand of Indy, or the delicious food and adult beverages, I had a fun time. I ended up getting a sweater there too, and I'm actually wearing it right meow. What can I say. It makes my blue eyes 'pop'. Thanks guys! Catch yah on the flip side. Mi Mochima was an AMAZING way to end a multi-day trek on the California Lost Coast. Who would have thought that you'd come upon this authentic Venezuelan restaurant in tiny Shelter Cove? I was craving a big meal and ordered the burger and the shrimp salad and they were both so good. I can't remember what the burger was called but whatever you do, GET IT! Super moist beef patty with onions, tomatoes, cheese, lettuce, and tasty sauce all stuck between two giant fried plantains (instead of a bun)... SO GOOD. The shrimp salad was a great portion (definitely big enough to share), fresh, and very tasty. I sincerely wish that we were able to stay in Shelter Cove for dinner because the dinner menu looked so good we would have eaten there twice in the same day. The restaurant also had a gorgeous view of the coastline, plenty of outdoor and indoor seating, and was super clean. If you're in Shelter Cove, definitely stop here, it's a really unique experience. read more

A friend and I tried to get into a different restaurant and it was reservation only. So we were told in the parking lot about a pizza place down the road. As we drove by we saw Mi Mochimo on the opposite side. We decided to try it. Well let me tell you... it was the best food!!!! Clam chowder was soooo good! The calamari burger and the fish and chips were extremely well prepared. It was so delicious. we are going back for a second night. even the french fries were real french fries! Apparently they change up the type of food they have on the menu each night. Tomorrow night is food from Argentina Two waitresses ran their butts off. And they were still very pleasant and checked on us quite a bit. I wish I knew who the chef was just to tell him that his food is great!! read more

Yummy. The family stopped in for lunch and we're not disappointed. We started with the best yucca fries, a beautiful guava juice creation, a cider and an Eel River beer. We ordered some great sandwiches, I don't remember the proper names, but one was a Cubano and the other was a beautiful steak sandwich. We also ordered a traditional dish with chicken, avocado, and fried plantains for the bread. They were all amazing. The portions were also huge and we all took Home leftovers. Service was a little slow and inconsistent, but they were very pleasant and the food was worth the wait. I think they are probably building up staff again after the last year. The view can't be beat and neither can the food. They had a wonderful singer/guitar player who was wonderful and sang chill folk tunes and cracked some great jokes. If you are in this tiny town you should definitely stop here. read more

Ate lunch and dinner here in late July 2021. The lunch was good, but the dinner was fantastic. The lunch menu is very different (basic coastal American with fried fish and clam chowder), while dinner is Venezuelan. Our dinner (the rockfish and the chicken) were both excellent with a lot of flavors, great sides, and excellent presentation. This is a tiny town with three restaurants and no other competition for miles and miles, so they don't have to be this good! We were both really impressed. read more

I normally don't put bad reviews online but.....We went to this restaurant on 7/6. We had drove ALL day and was looking for a wonderful relaxing dinner and drinks at sunset. We came across this restaurant and was looking forward to a wonderful dinner. Everyone there seemed to be having a wonderful time. We ordered our dinner and had to change our orders multiple times as they were out of what we had wanted. Then we waited....and waited....and waited. My husband never received his cocktail and it took over an hour and a half to get our dinner. By that time, we had MISSED the sunset we drove 7 hours to see. By the time they brought out our order it was HORRIBLE. I ordered the skirt steak with onions. It was DISGUSTING. I wouldn't even feed that to my dog. It tasted like it was frozen, thawed out in a microwave, and then thrown on the grill WITHOUT seasonings, for a flash charred look. It truly was DISGUSTING. On top of it layed wilted overcooked onions. My husband knew I was pissed and refused to let me complain. On top of that, HIS dinner was grizzled pieces of meat with overcooked shrimp. It to was DISGUSTING! If this is how the "rich" eat....NO THANK YOU. read more

Wow. This was definitely the best meal I've had in years. Ordered the BBQ special with the shrimp. Everything was so fresh and well-seasoned. Don't let the higher than average prices deter you. It's definitely worth it! read more

Yet another great dining experience at this wonderful establishment. Orders were swordfish empanadas as starters, followed by Ribs and Pescado main courses. Food and service were excellent, and the live music rounded out a perfect patio dining evening. read more

Get ready to have your taste buds blown away! This is THE BEST Restaurant in Humboldt County right now... no question! We were three and started off with two orders of the Empanaditos which is three per order, one each of fish, beef, and cheese served with an amazing Guasacaca sauce. For our main course, my cousin had the Shredded Beef with Black Beans, rice and fried plantains which he said was "spectacularly delicious". His partner had the Pan Fried Cod fish with boiled, buttered potatoes, Cole slaw and fried plantains which she said was "perfect in every way". I had the Camarones sautéed with garlic and lime, Cole slaw, crusty fried potato rounds and fried plantains... WOW! The food is so well prepared, I'm certain the main ingredient in all these dishes was love... no really... you can actually taste the love that goes into the preparation and execution of this culinary art. One of my companions went for the homemade Sangria and she said it was terrific. They serve another local up and coming establishment's craft beer, Gyppo Ale Mill that is at the other end of Shelter Cove. My cousin had their IPA and I had their Pilsner. Both are truly amazing works of brewery art. The Pilsner was super crisp with perfect balance. The IPA is hoppy and cloudy as it should be. This place knows how to set the proper temperature in their keg storage box. Their wine selection needs improvement, but I'm not deleting any stars simply because I know this was only the second weekend they've been open. (hint hint) I'm not typically a big dessert guy, however another customer saw the look on our faces after we finished dinner, and came over to our table and said, "...don't leave without trying the Coconut Flan." So we did, and well there's only one sensation I know of in life that's better than this Coconut Flan... can you guess what it is? Just take the ride to Shelter Cove and lunch or dine at this place. But you may want to call first... I have a feeling once the word gets out, it'll be a long wait for a table... like days, or maybe even weeks. Thank you Blu and Company for finally bringing authentic, fresh, delicious, loving cuisine to this incredible destination on the Lost Coast. ¡Prestigio! read more

We went for brunch. The ambiance was nice. Sangria and mimosas were great. The food they had was delicious. But we had to order based on what was available--which was VERY limited. According to the server they were "slammed" the night before and sold out of several of their specialties (empanadas, arepas, clam chowder). We got there the same time as a party of 8 and were told they only had 8 of something left (I forget what). We started with plantains and had the pulled pork and bistek sandwiches. The food was very good. The service was so-so. As dining options go for this little town this was definitely a good choice; I'd just recommend going on a Saturday afternoon/night so you have more options with what you can order. read more

So I was beyond excited to go to this place. My boyfriend and I came to Shelter Cove for his birthday. We had plans to go to the brewery for a flight of beers and come here for dinner. We call at 7:30 and HOUR and A HALF before close and are told they are closing at early because they are slow. Absolutely awful service, and missed out on customers who planned to buy appetizers, drinks and meals. Sad because the locals raved about it and we didn't get to experience what is supposedly the highest class restaurant in the area. read more

Delicious food and wonderful views! The waitress that served us was super friendly and made us feel like family. Went here while visiting a friend who lives in SoHum and we were not disappointed. The building is a hybrid A-frame with plenty of outdoor seating and upstairs/downstairs tables along with a 8-stool bar. The staff, and as I understand it's a family business, are very efficient and courteous. We ordered several appetizers and the wife and I order the Venezuelan platter, which is for two and is a large platter of beef, pork, chicken and chorizo along with slaw, potatoes, and a sampling of several of the appetizers. All of the food was very very good. As mentioned, the service is very good and the wine pours are healthy. We are looking forward to eating there on our last night in SC. read more

Super disappointing. The raving reviews got my hopes up but I now see there just aren't any other options for eating in town here so you can't be picky I guess. But this place was such a let down. We got here right before the dinner rush, the waitresses were friendly but inattentive, and while they apologized for the wait, it wasn't enough to make up for us having to wait until our food was cold on our table just to ask for something we needed. The food was mediocre at best. They were serving an Italian menu that night. Completely overpriced. I ordered chicken Parmesan. The chicken was small, DRY, and overcrusted with not much flavor. The pasta on the side was way over cooked, and under sauced. The Italian salad was decent and the fresh baked bread was a nice touch. Partner got the fish and chips. It came with two small pieces of fish and a small pile of under salted fries. He enjoyed the fish but with everything here the portion size is way too small for how much you are paying. The chef wasn't wearing a mask in the kitchen also, for those who are concerned with that. read more

Absolutely the best! Amazing food and the service is unparalleled. The owner, Blu and his wife, provided a personal touch and attention not to mention the food was amazing! Whether a quick bite after checking into one of the hotels or coming off the Lost Coast Trail, you will not be disappointed. Do not miss the Pabellon Criollo, a mix of shredded beef, black beans, rice and plantains or the burger with plantains, avocado and grilled onions.
