    Aji Gallina - Nov 2025

Efficient counter service, quick preparation. Interior is a bit shabby without any natural light coming in. Space probably has not been renovated since they opened 10+ years ago. Mi Peru has no website, so you can't tell what prices are until you show up at the restaurant. I ordered the Aji Gallina ($16.99 + 1.28 sales tax). A load of white rice, 3 white potato halves, probably only 3-oz shredded chicken breast. Garnish was skimpy - 1/2 of a boiled egg and a single kalamata olive. Tasted good and formed 2 meals for me. Peruvian food reminds me a lot of Hawaiian plate lunches. Good-tasting and filling (gobs of rice) for surfers, laborers, plantation workers. No fancy ingredients or cooking techniques.

Online menu on Toast 2 of 9. Sides.

I found Mi Peru Peruvian Cuisine on Yelp when searching for takeout nearby. At the time, this restaurant had a 4.5-star average rating with 158 reviews. I agree with that rating. The food and service were good to great. Mi Peru is located in a small shopping center (BB&T Plaza) behind Sam's Club and Target (South Square). It opened in 2014. It's a small, humble, casual restaurant. Along with a fairly spacious dining room inside, they have a narrow, uncovered, three-table patio outside. Online ordering is available through a link on Mi Peru's website at https://miperucuisine.com/. At the time I ordered, they used the Toast platform which I've grown familiar with. It's easy to use and I like that I can pay online so all I have to do at the restaurant is pick up my order. I checked the online menu for two days and both days, they were out of the Peruvian charcoal rotisserie chicken. Oh well. It was OK because there were plenty of other dishes for us to try and they all turned out to be delicious. When I checked the online menu a third straight day, the chicken was back in stock. Maybe I had bad luck. I hope to try it sometime. A whole chicken was priced at $20.99, half $12.99, and quarter $8.99. Those all include two large sides. I placed my order at 5:30pm on a Wednesday and it was ready for me by 6:00pm. When I arrived to the restaurant, the kitchen looked busy. There were three dine-in parties (two inside, one outside), one uncleaned table, and one party waiting for takeout in front of me. Here's what I ordered: * Ceviche de Tilapia ($15.99) - fresh raw diced tilapia marinated in lime juice, served with Peruvian corn, sweet potato, lettuce, and onions * Lomo Saltado ($15.99) - Peruvian-style beef stir-fry mixed with onions, tomatoes, cilantro, soy sauce, and served on fries and jasmine rice * Cau Cau ($12.99) - Afro-Peruvian tripe stew, seasoned with aji amarillo and turmeric * Aji de Gallina ($11.99) - pulled chicken breast cooked with a creamy aji amarillo sauce; served with sliced potato, sliced boiled eggs, olives, and white rice * Alfajores ($2.99 each) - Homemade Peruvian-style cookies with dulce de leche We enjoyed everything. At the top of the list were the Alfajores. They were incredible. Definitely order at least one per person. You won't regret it. These were some of the best cookies we've had anywhere. It's worth coming to Mi Peru for their cookies alone. The Alfajores just melted in our mouths. Each bite was sweet, buttery, and magical. No other way to explain it. Perfect texture and flavor. This was my first time ordering takeout ceviche and Mi Peru did a great job. The restaurant offers a few different kinds of ceviche: mixed, tilapia, and sea bass. I went with the tilapia version since I'm allergic to shrimp and the mixed version comes with shrimp along with mussels and other seafood. The Ceviche de Tilapia was excellent. It was fresh, colorful, and flavorful. It was so flavorful and zesty that we didn't need to squeeze the two lime pieces included. I enjoyed the big, soft pieces of Peruvian corn. Crispy, dried, roasted corn and a red spicy sauce were served on the side. Good stuff. I recommend this dish. Of the entrees (I consider the entree-sized ceviche above as more of an appetizer), the Lomo Saltado was my favorite. It was also my wife's favorite. This is a popular Peruvian dish and one of Mi Peru's most-ordered dishes. I believe the type of beef they used was sirloin. While the strips of sirloin were a *little* on the dry and chewy side, they were still high-quality and seasoned and flavored well. The other ingredients were fresh, and this was just an overall hearty and satisfying dish. You can't go wrong with it. I liked the Cau Cau more than my wife did, but I also like tripe more than she does. If you like tripe, I think Mi Peru's Cau Cau is worth trying. I likened this to a comfort-food-type dish along with the Aji de Gallina. Both were tasty stew or stew-like dishes, chockful of umami, and I couldn't stop eating them. That unpleasant tripe taste/odor in the Cau Cau was mostly non-existent (very subtle). The shredded chicken breast in the Aji de Gallina was tender and the sauce was creamy and scrumptious. All three entrees came with white rice which was soft, fluffy, and yummy. In addition, the entire order came with a complimentary side of Sarza which is sliced purple onion marinated in lime juice and served with chopped cilantro. It's like a salsa. It was the same stuff they served on top of the ceviche. Tangy and wonderful. Also included were two small cups of Huacatay sauce, a yellow sauce made with the same aji amarillo chili peppers that were used to make the creamy yellow sauce in the Aji de Gallina entree. I noticed these cost extra on the menu (listed under the sides) with Sarza at $2.99 and Huacatay sauce at $0.99. I'm not sure why I got them for free except maybe because I ordered several items. TL;DR - I consider Mi Peru a proverbial gem.

Late lunch after Mother's Day weekend shopping with the family. Initially, we waited over 10 min for the server to even take our drinks. Given all of that time, we already knew what we wanted to order as entrees. Overall the food was good, averaging around 3.5 stars. They also offer patio seating, but we sat inside. I ate the ceviche.

This restaurant is located in a shopping plaza with shared parking. The business has several tables and booths inside. It isn't really big. We went about an hour before they closed during the week and there were only a couple of other people inside. Our sever, Lucila, greeted us right away with menus. She was nice and helpful with the menu. I ended up ordering the rotisserie chicken, white rice and a side salad. The food came out fairly quick. The food was good and fresh. The chicken was seasoned well, flavorful and it was tender. The rice and side salad were also good. The salad was made with cucumbers, tomatoes and lettuce and i opted for the balsamic dressing. I would definitely return and try some of their other dishes.

Food is really tasty. I loved the picadera mixta and the bistec a lo pobre. Service was super fast. No reservation was needed.

Came here with a group for a birthday dinner on a Saturday evening. Staff is friendly and helpful. The shrimp marinated in lime tasted fresh and the cilantro made for a nice mix of flavors. My husband ordered beef which was very tender and flavorful. Portions are great. Restaurant is very clean.

The perfect spot for your Peruvian fix! Came here for lunch on a Sunday and was pleasantly surprised to see that they have a patio with several tables. The patio is quite cute, decorated with hanging potted plants and tables shaded with umbrellas. We peeked inside and it seemed pretty clean, but the lovely weather convinced us to dine al fresco. My friend and I split the ceviche appetizer to start, which was fresh and light (note: Peruvian ceviche is not served with chips) and you can adjust the spice level to your liking (we asked for medium spice which honestly tasted very mild). For my entree, I opted for the lomo saltado. Perfectly cooked juicy beef, flavorful veggies, all served over a bed of crinkle cut fries and a side of rice. The sauce that came with it was absolutely delicious! It reminded me of a more citrusy chimichurri. The portion size of the dish was quite generous, but naturally your girl inhaled it all. Our server was Manuel and he was excellent - just the right level of attentive, and very straightforward about recommendations. I was a bit hesitant to order the lomo saltado (not sure if it's too "basic") but he reassured me that it would be very tasty - and he was spot on! Highly recommend this spot! Hope to come again soon.

I ordered ají de gallina. It was delicious but it should be called aji de papás. I got few chicken meat and 6 pieces of potatoes. My husband ordered pollo a la brasa... it was raw! Yes, raw chicken. The place was very clean with great music

This review is offered as constructive feedback to the staff, management, and ownership of a restaurant we want to see succeed. Today we stopped in during Sunday brunch and placed a takeout order for one pound of brisket and jambalaya. The wait was approximately an hour. I understand that brunch is busy, and the restaurant appeared to be working with two servers, a bartender, a busser, and several people in the kitchen. The front-of-house staff seemed to be doing what they could. The issue appears to be kitchen execution and order flow. Operationally, an order consisting primarily of slicing a pound of already-prepared brisket and portioning jambalaya should not remain in the same production queue for an hour. This is less a staffing criticism than a process problem. Management may want to look at ticket prioritization, a dedicated expediter during peak periods, separation of simple takeout orders from full dine-in tickets, and clearer ownership of orders from receipt through handoff. When the food is already prepared, throughput should be measured in minutes, not an hour. That matters because a restaurant can have excellent food and hardworking people and still lose customers through a bottleneck in the process. The objective shouldn't be to make everyone work harder; it should be to design the kitchen flow so the same people can work smarter and move appropriate orders through faster. Parking has also become increasingly difficult and is worth considering as the restaurant continues to draw a crowd. None of this changes what we enjoy about Succotash. We love the food, the music, the authenticity and the character of the place. We'll be back. But an hour for this particular takeout order points to an operational problem worth fixing. Great food deserves equally great execution.

Nerra is at 506 Ramseur Street, Durham, NC. Get a reservation. Don't show up hoping. We went for a belated Father's Day, a week late, because my wife and son let the date slip past them. They'll deny it. I know better. And I'm not actually upset about it, because if they'd remembered, we'd have missed this. We started the night with the Baker's Flight (pumpernickel, cheddar rosemary biscuits, cornbread, house butters). The pastries were excellent. The butter was something else entirely. I asked for 8oz to take home, which is not a thing I do. I don't need more butter in my life. Seriously. But this butter was coming home wiht me regardless. Our entries: Shrimp and Grits (built on stone-milled grits with jumbo shrimp, spinach, seared peppers, smoked gouda and parmesan, under a Cajun cream sauce). Number two, the Sun-Fire Jerk Chicken (bone-in, braised and marinated, with fried plantains, island jerk sauce, jasmine rice, and a salsa). Lastly: The Whole Roasted Fish (Snapper this particular night, with spinach, tomatoes, citrus caper, and roasted potatoes). Each dish was spectacular. As if not enough, we still ordered dessert. Mama Made, we were told. Cheesecake and a Chocolate Brownie with ice cream. I'm not going to lie here and say either were shared. Somewhere about this time I was doing math in my head of how we could come to Nerra on a weekly basis. Seriously, I was. The Chef came by the table. The Chef's Mama came by too. Our server, Andrea, did the kind of work that doesn't get talked about enough. Andrea was attentive without hovering, present without performing. At home I put a good deal of salt on my food, so even though I had read the Yelp reviews saying that the chef was overly generous with the salt shaker, I thought, "This should be no problem." I was wrong. My brother-in-law's short ribs and my gumbo were at the top edge of salt tolerance. We did our best to politely eat, and didn't complain at the start, which some might say is our fault. By the way, I have eaten a lot of New Orleans gumbo, which characteristically is thicker and less salty. I ate half of mine, not wanting to stop the party, and when I was full, I called the waiter over and quietly mentioned the high salt level. She seemed astonished and said I should have asked for a different dish. Indeed I had waited too long, but when is it the diner's responsibility to sound the alarm about the chef's excesses? At this point, we paid the bill and I left a generous tip. On the way out, I chatted with the host/manager and politely informed her about the salt. She had her own explanation: the gumbo has been cooking all week and thus it gets very reduced and salty. Again, if this is true, there's no oversight in the kitchen, no one tasting the dish before it hits the table. Finally, it was too late, because of my polite hesitation, to offer me another dish. Was it too late to adjust the bill? Had that been offered, I would still be drinking many glasses of water but I would not be writing this review, an anomaly for me since the majority of my Yelp reviews are wildly positive. Eaters beware.

We devoured it all! For our dinner selection, we split a three-seafood combo meal of fried cod, scallops, and shrimp. It came with French fries and cole slaw. The portions were generous, and delicious. We'll be back!

My waitress was Josie and whole meal was incredible. I take a lot of recommendations when I eat out…read moreand she helped me through entire menu. Gin cocktail was good. Appetizers of broiled oysters (w spinach/caramelized onions) we're very filling, unique, and I am now a huge fan of oysters broiled. Other appetizer was the artichoke, which had this incredible lemon caper sauce. For dinner I had a crew that was extremely refreshing, bright and the last dish had this Worcestershire/almost Buffalo sauce that was also one of the best things I've eaten.

Fantastic experience from start to finish. Not only was our server (wish we got her name!)…read moreknowledgable and quick, everyone from the hosts to the food runners were all very sweet and welcoming. We started with raw NC oysters and crawfish & shrimp croquettes, then to our main dishes of red drum and shrimp & grits. All dishes were unique and overall delicious. The service was outstanding, food was delivered not too late and not too soon (which means nothing is sitting!). Also, I highly recommend the Notorious F.I.G. cocktail, as recommended by our server. Not too "figgy" and not too sweet, well balanced and dangerously good :-) Finished with a delicious banana pudding that I would come back for, just for that. Not to mention a gorgeous little patio that's dog-friendly (give them a call for a heads up of your pup). 10/10 will be back!
