This was my Friday lunch review : WOW - completely renovated!!! I had no idea. Full sit down table service, no more confusing walk up counter, but then 1/2 service. FULL SERVICE . A great friend suggested the Miami for lunch. I'd been several times many years ago. And while I liked it, it was a tad confusing. NOW, with the completely new design, it's much larger, far more wide open and airy with sit down full table service. Super sweet server ( though there's a language barrier, but google translate is magic, ha!) Tons of choices. HUGE portions! So much food that I was full all day!! THE PRICES!! I'd think they were 1/2!! SOOOO AFFORDABLE!! In these days of inflation, I do not know how they do it at SUCH low prices. DEFINITELY GOING BACK!! I had the luck that my lunch mate knows the owner who came over. Meeting this charming gentleman added so much to the dining experience that I not only thoroughly enjoyed the food experience, I now feel connected on a personal level that adds such an awesome layer to a meal. It's so rare to still have on site owners who not only truly care about their business, they love what they do and that comes through in their warm welcoming charm, that simply does not exist in most casual sit down restaurants. Great coffee ! AND love how they serve the rice in the shape of the DR! A shape that is actually accurate with so many tiny details. 2 days later, Sunday From Friday lunch, to Sunday 2 days later : from a dozen superlatives , to disappointment. I've been waiting 50 minutes for a shrimp dinner. It took 15 minutes to get the 1st glass of water.... on top of the 50 minutes I've been sitting here, I have to add that what was nice and quiet on Friday at lunch is now night club decibel LOUD music. The server could not even hear me. I'll still definitely come back, but only for a quiet weekday lunch, not when it's busy on a weekend , nightclub loud and glacially slow. read more

The food was really good and we'd definitely come back for that. The atmosphere was nice - colorful room and pleasant music that was at a nice moderate volume. However, in a nearly empty restaurant the service was SUPER SLOW, to the point of being dissapointing. There was literally one other patron in the restaurant at the time. This gives me pause about coming back, especially in light of other comments about the service. Would not want to eat here when it's more than a little busy. read more

I came for ropa vieja, but based on the other menu items it reminds me more of a Puerto Rican cuisine. Rustic food. I liked the rice and red beans but the beef tasted a bit stale. As if they shredded it ahead of time for later use. Also the base needed more flavor. I ordered a mofongo to go, which was decent but desperately needed a sauce. In and outdoor seating available. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The vibe inside the restaurant was cool and welcoming. The vibrant colors sure did remind us of Miami . We were happy we got the opportunity to try this restaurant. Parking is difficult but manageable. The prices are reasonable for the quality and quantity of the food . I walked in and ordered takeout, and everything was very well packed and had good portion sizes. The food is so flavorful and refreshing compared to a lot of other Boston restaurants. I felt like I was back in New Jersey! Their website does not show the correct prices, though. It must be very old because everything is $4-5 more than it shows on their online menu so our bill was higher than we thought it would be. I think it's a bit overpriced for what it is. read more

I visited Boston to see my friends in Jamaica Plain. They had never been to this restaurant so we tried it together. We were all astounded by the flavors! I managed to fit in two trips to the restaurant during my stay in Boston! The ambiance was amazing with great music and a community/family feel between some local patrons and the restaurant staff. The first time we went we shared an order of the carne guisada and the mofongo de pollo. That was my first time having mofongo and it was enjoyable but the carne guisada was something sent from heaven. During our second visit, we liked it so much that we had separate orders of the carne guisada, it's just that good! The passion fruit juice was also fire, the flavor was so pungent and delicious. Miami restaurant has been on my radar for a while now, and I was really so impressed! I ordered takeout on a day that l was low on groceries, and I will definitely be adding it to my takeout rotation! My standards for Cuban food are high as someone raised in Miami but I have less background on everyday Dominican food. I ordered 2 empanadas (one chicken one beef), pollo a la plancha (grilled chicken) with rice and beans, and a Cuban sandwich. The empanadas were delicious, the most on par with my comfort food that I've found in Boston. The chicken was great, cooked with peppers and onions and served with so much rice it honestly justified the whole order. The beans were Dominican style red beans, which varies from my staple of black beans but were very good. Lastly, the Cuban sandwich was not bad, although had some extra ingredients (lettuce, tomato, mayo) that I feel should not be on a Cuban sandwich, and the ham was quite thick for my liking. This is an item I would probably not order again based on my preferences. Overall, I will definitely order from Miami restaurant again and look forward to trying more items on the menu! read more

The food here is great. I had the chicken soup. It was a "small" size, but the serving was quite large and came with rice too. My husband got the fried fish along with a side of rice and beans. We originally wanted two different items, but they didn't have them. Still, everything was delicious. We did wait a bit for the food. As others have said, the restaurant has a very laid-back vibe with folks hanging out watching sports and a slow kitchen. The waitress only spoke to us in Spanish, which my husband luckily speaks. Went to a Miami Restaurant for some mofongo a bit after lunch. The place is quite small but there is still plenty of seating. They have menus as well as their menu on a board behind the cash register area. The place is actually pretty loud both from the music that they play but I didn't mind too much. The place makes me feel like I'm back a my local Cuban joint in Miami. We ordered the cheese mofongo and the guanábana smoothie (soursop) and it was all incredible!! The cheese mofongo had enough garlic and a lot of cheese! I was so happy to find a place that serves cheese mofongo since he most common are definitely pork or chicharrón. The smoothie was pretty tasty and I'd definitely get again. The portion was really big and I shared it with my partner and we were both pretty full. The main issue with this place is the service. It's a bit confusing as to whether you should order at the counter or sit and wait for the one waitress. This wasn't so bad and we were told to sit and that someone would be with us soon. The service overall was really really slow both to take our order and for the food to come out. I can deal with the food taking a while if it's good (like in this case) but it was just a bit annoying to have to wait to for our order to be taken for that long. I recommend but I would really suggest ordering to go and taking a walk around and then coming back to pick up your order! Food is really really great! read more

This place can be intimidating for gringos who don't know Spanish, I gotta be honest about that right up front. At least I was greeted in pretty decent English, all I heard throughout the restaurant was Spanish from everyone else. I was looking for take out late at night, parking was pretty easy to find on the street but I'm not so sure about that during busier times in the day. It's a pretty tiny place with a walk up counter to get your order on. I studied the menu for about 5 minutes before making a selection, I ended up with two "dinner plates", one chicken and one steak. They both came with sweet plantains, white rice and a side of beans. The steak came in "red sauce" (how they described it to me). It looked fiery but when we dug in there wasn't any heat at all which I'm ok with either way. The plantains and beans were flipping FANTASTIC! I love the creaminess of the sauce with the brown beans, I love how it seeps down in between the grains of white rice and flavors everything else on your plate. It's my fault I didn't realize the chicken came out fried, it was also very small pieces of what I believe were the thigh and it included a lot of bone. I've had this style similiarly in Latin restaurants before, it's just not my favorite. The shredded steak was my biggest complaint, much of it was overcooked and it had to be drown in the red sauce to make it more palpable. I'll be returning for sure, even though I'm not in JP all that often. Went in here to order a Cuban coffee...its a Cuban restaurant, called Miami, and the woman behind the counter had no idea what I was talking about. I tried explaining to her what a cafe cubano/ cafecito is and she was completely confused. They called themselves a Cafe, they have the machine. They serve coffee but don't know what a Cuban coffee is. I would make it myself at home but its just so different when a white girl makes it. I wanted an authentic Cuban coffee, damnit! I ended up ordering a cafe con leche, no leche, lots of sugar and she still seemed confused. I pointed to the small Styrofoam cup and asked what drink goes in there and she said "it's called a small". Either she's dumb or she's not really Cuban. I'm from Miami and if you go anywhere and ask for a Cuban coffee they give you a shot of Cuban espresso, sweetened that basically feels like crack. That's all I wanted. Some of the waitress are nice but others like example, and older light skin lady working there is so rude to people , she will give you anything but what you ask for, she tried giving me something cold and also substituting an ingredient without asking and also giving and not say anything and when I nicely said I'm sorry ma'am that is not what I ask for nor want or can't have , she don't know anyone's health issues or allergies she got an attitude and said oh well I don't have anything else and got upset and put a face and was very rude and threw away what she had prepared rudely that another employee noticed her behavior and even told her but we do have what she's asking for why can't you just get it , so the other employee just apologized for her. Apparently, you can't go home. I used to frequent this place when I lived in JP 15 years ago. It WAS a favourite. Not any more. The goal was to order 3 subs to go. We failed in our mission. The music was so loud when we entered, we could talk to the waitress. It was impressively almost a loud as a show by Boston's Zulus After much communication effort (including pointing the specific items on the menu), We ordered 3 subs. We then waited for close to 40 minutes. The place had more the feel of a bunch of friends getting together for Sunday afternoon beers, than an actual eating establishment. Finally got our food and left. When we got home, we opened the bag to 2 sandwiches and I assume is an order of some kind of fried chicken. The chicken (which we didn't order) can be best described as some kind of fried, dried chicken jerky. Overcooked beyond belief. I really liked the food. I had ox tail stew with green plantains (tostones). My husband had chicken stew, rice and plaintain. They were out of maduros and guandules. I went into Miami Restaurant earnestly looking for quality Cuban food. My girlfriend and I could not be more wrong to give this place a try. The first red light turned on when we realized that most of the people there weren't eating at all. They were just drinking beers and watching soccer. This was at a prime dinnertime on a weekend. The next warning should have been that the waitress, who is dressed like she is about to go to a nightclub, did not speak ANY English. I understand that English is not the first language for everybody but I would think that you would least have to be able to communicate the menu or to understand food allergies for customers. Luckily, neither of us are fussy or have any outstanding food preferences so we just picked some very basic dishes off the menu. It took FOREVER for the food to come out and when it did, it was barely edible. The proteins were way overcooked, the food was bland, and the salad (carelessly chopped lettuce and tomatoes) did not have any flavoring AT ALL. Somebody tell me how any of this is excusable? I guess I should be happy I didn't get food poisoning because the ingredients looked stale. On top of everything the price we paid for the garbage they tried to pass for food was egregious. Upon the recommendation of Roni E, I went here after my first day back at work. There had been a lot of meetings and suddenly I realized that it was 3pm and that I hadn't had lunch. So I decided to go with lunchner. It is absolutely correct that you can get a lot of food here for 8 or 9 bucks. I feel that Miami succeeds where El Oriental has gone astray recently. Miami Restaurant is faster and cheaper, if not as "pretty." The stewed chicken meal I got was great. The chicken, rice, and beans were all good. And the owner was very helpful when I said.. "I'm not sure what I want, but I think I want a plate." I'm not sure if it comes with it or if he was being nice, but I also got about 5 plantains which is enough to win me over. I LOVE plantains. I even bought some earlier to fry myself. But these maduros were actually not very sweet (and no, they weren't tostones). Although I may not get the sweet plantains again, I will most likely be back for the other food and with the bf. Still, I can't help but be a little bummed that while there's all kinds of fresh produce popping off the vines locally, the tomatoes in the cubano taste like cardboard and the lettuce looks to have been flown in from 2000+ miles away. We visited Miami Restaurant on Monday after the Marathon, as my husband was hungry from running 26.2 miles. It's definitely a neighborhood gem and I see why. I had the steak sandwich and a pineapple smoothie; my husband and brother had the fried chicken plate with sweet plantains and rice & beans. Let me tell you one thing and one thing only: It is very rare for me to go to a restaurant and not eat food. People who knows me knows that I don't play around when it comes to food. I'm more of a "Friendo Y Comiendo" kinda gal. And even though I am Dominican and should be able to eat and enjoy this type of food, I am also very critical when it comes to it. The service was great. The atmosphere was great. The food? Not so great! I ordered Mofongo with chicharron (it sounds iffy but it's tasty, tasty if it's done well) and it was greasy and the chicharron tasted awful. I asked if the Mofongo came with a little soup on the side (the soup makes it extra tasty and delicious) it didn't. The Mofongo came with a tasteless shredded iceberg lettuce with a slice of tomato, didn't like it either. I ordered a small side of fries, even though it was so big to be small (if you're a french fries lover this is your place!) It tasted weird. So I stroked out. I also ordered Morir Soñando, to wash everything down but it was way too sweet and it wasn't fresh out of the blender, I couldn't drink it. But my mom and grandma both liked the rice, beans and chicken. The lemonades they had was way too bitter. I came out of the restaurant with an empty stomach, not satisfied at all! They had ran outta the Carne Guisada con Papas (which is the Beef Stew in tomato sauce) so instead they were able to do the same thing but with pork instead. I'm actually kinda glad they did because the pork was phenomenal. It was very tender and soft and complimented the tomato sauce real well. While we waited I had actually wondered what was taking so long since there was a box sitting at the counter and what we were waiting for. The plate included rice, beans and plantains. Apparently, my meal ended up coming in 2 boxes and a plastic container. I had also ordered a beef patty, not realizing how much food I was actually getting for $1. The food is a little better than El Oriental's and the ambiance more authentic (picture overweight dominican guys staring at your girlfriend's butt). Beware though, they may rip you off if you do not frequent the place. They insisted on charging me $10 for a sandwich listed as $8 on their menu. El oriental (down the street) sells the same sandwich (Cubano especial) for $8 and won't try to swindle you if they suspect you're a gringo or just passing by. Lots of older men hangout and have beers here. It's most definitely one of Boston's premiere Latin sausage fests... or "fiesta de salchichas." The food and service I received today is worth less than one star...unprofessional staff and shitty food will ensure that this is the very last time this place will ever see a dime from me. Not only was I hung up on (twice) while giving my order, when I called back to confirm my order the woman who answered the phone acted as if I was bothering her... and when I arrived to pick up my food wasn't ready....as for the food... simply trash - I ordered chicharon de pollo and received overcooked battered and fried chicken that had been sitting and drying out underneath a heat lamp. nothing like what is pictured (or what I'm used to getting from this place) the bean sauce purée was watery and flavorless and the Maduro were clearly from the frozen Goya package. I could and should have gone to anyone's anbuelita house for a better experience as a whole. No wonder Alex chimi has a line down the block and this place is basically empty. I love me some Dominican breakfast, but the mangu (mashed plantain) here was pretty bad. It was soaked in oil, rather runny, and too salty. It was made to order so I had high expectations. When I opened my to-go plate, I immediately noticed how oily my entire plate was. I ordered fried cheese which clearly went straight from the fryer onto my plate (I blotted it repeatedly), creating a pool of oil, gross. My scrambled eggs were dry and crumbly, similar to the eggs I made when I was 10. Really so disappointed with the Dominican food in JP. Get it together people! Please :) read more
