Ok. I honestly do not understand why Dr. Stein has such a high rating. I relied on Yelp to find me a good doctor, but what I found was no where near what I was looking for. I just realized that most of his high rating came from Yelp accounts with 1 or 2 review. This was pointed out to me by a fellow Yelper. I hope everyone else who is thinking about seeing Dr. Stein takes note of this. Okay. Dr. Stein's staff was friendly and polite. I think that's the only good thing about his office. First Appointment: Dr. Stein saw me at a late appointment and I was very appreciative of that. I brought him x-rays from my MD since I was complaining about some foot pain. He first started out asking me questions about my pain, which was normal and I felt that he was actually diagnosing me. After listening to my complaints, he then starts to tell me EVERYTHING that is wrong with my foot/legs. He tells me I have knocked knees (i have no idea what that means), flat feet, something about my enlarged toe bone is sticking out too much, and just everything else! Gosh way to make a girl feel secure huh doctor? He told me we were running out of time and that he wanted me to come back at another appointment to get my custom shoe soles made. (I got suckered into buying them) Second Appointment: I got molded for my custom soles. Then he told me he wanted to take another "view" of my foot on x-rays because the ones I brought him didn't show a certain angle. But then he told me to make another appointment for that since we were out of time. I said okay fine. Third Appointment: At this appointment he seemed to have completely forgotten everything! He asked me the same exact questions he asked me on the first appointment. I thought he wrote it all down?!?! Then he tried to sell me another product. He didn't mention anything about another x-ray or that he wanted to run anymore test. At this point I was irritated and just wanted to leave. I was told to set up another appointment to get my custom molds. I said fine, whatever. At the front desk, I found out that I was being charged for this "exam" where he only asked me the same questions he asked the first appointment. I was furious! But I understand that I took up the doctor's schedule and was liable to pay for his time. So I fussed up the money. Fourth Appointment: He gave me my custom molds and again tried to sell me another product and try to prescribe me pills. I got out as soon as possible and avoided making anymore appointments with him. Later, I found that I was being charged with the exam ($75) that I had already paid before leaving! I tried called their medical biller and leaving messages, but no one ever called back. But the bills just kept on coming. So finally I went to the office with my credit card statement and the receipt THEY gave me to prove that I had already paid. The front desk apologized and told me I shouldn't be receiving anymore bills. Next month, I receive a bill!! I think this continued for about 3-4 months where they told me I wouldn't receive another bill, but I did before it was actually resolved. HEADACHE!!! I wouldn't recommend Dr. Stein. Please be aware that he will try to sucker money out of you and sell you product you might not need. read more

After over a month I just received my bill. Dr. Stein charged me $55 for the "foot wrapping" that was not even finish. As I mentioned on my first post, all that was done to my foot was a poor job of taping which probably had no benefits. This was right before he told me he would be back and had me waiting in the room for 20 minutes until I walked out and left. I also called Janet and asked why the double charge on the x-ray. My invoice that was mailed to me shows that I was charge $85 twice for an x-ray foot exam. This is totally insane. I've never experienced anything like this anywhere else! read more

When i went to my doctor at kaiser she gave me two options to treat my nail fungus, either take a pill which would cause me to come in for liver function test or she could just cut off my nail!!! Needless to say i seeked other options and found Dr.Steins office. I've been coming to Dr.Stein for awhile now and my toes are on the way to being clear and free of the nasty nail fungus. The staff here are very welcoming (raven is awesome) and the office and treatment rooms are pristinely clean. Yes the process is long but toe nails take much longer to grow out than your fingernails so Just Have PATIENCE. I spoke too soon in my first review of Dr. Stein. After going for repeated laser treatments for my toenail fungus over a year's time (costly!), there was no further improvement - in fact, my toenails became infected again. When I asked Dr. Stein if I might try Lamisil (oral fungicide), he had a bad reaction, and blamed my poor hygiene for the return of my toenail fungus. Also, I had to keep close track of my advance payments, because although they reduced the treatment cost, the office workers twice incorrectly calculated my balance due (in their favor). So, I stopped going to Dr. Stein and asked my new Kaiser physician to prescribe Lamisil, which she did, and my nails cleared up immediately. Why the three stars? Because if your toenail fungus is not as severe as mine was, the laser treatment may well work and be potentially gentler on your liver than Lamisil. read more

Don't have much good to say about the office. I visited for toenail fungus treatment. It's been over 6 months and over $1000 dollars later and I don't see any results at all. Regardless, during the course of treatment the Dr. tried to sell me more products I wouldn't need, and advertised that we wouldn't need to use Lamisil oral tablets, but finally resolved at the end to suggesting we try the oral tablets (for additional cost.) The office staff tried to help me when one of the products he sold me broke, but ended up forgetting about it and never helping me, so I called the company directly. Then, another time they told me my appointment was at the wrong office 30 minutes away. When I showed up, of course my appointment wasn't on the books and I'd wasted an hour and a good bit of gas. The bottom line, you can do better and I'm not sure that the treatment even works though that can vary from person to person. So, an addition. I went in because I had a numb foot after snowboarding. After improperly exposing an x-ray that the Dr. was essentially unable to read, he basically told me that it would "probably get better," with no explanation, referral, or follow-up, other than to recommend that I continue with getting my orthotics (probably so he could deliver and bill me for them). read more

I've been going to Dr. Stein for several months now for my persistent toenail fungus and skin fungus on the bottom of my feet. I have been dealing with this problem my entire adult life with very little success--until now. If you could have seen my feet before treatment and then compare them to today you would think they are not my feet! I can't believe it myself! I remember not too long ago that I was getting a massage and I was so embarrassed by how my feet looked that I told the massage therapist to not massage my feet. But today I am proud of how my feet look and feel. My feet don't have that disgusting scaly, itchy condition anymore and my toenails are clean and healthy. Now, don't think that this is a condition that goes away easily and that you can eradicate the fungus in one treatment. it is very persistent and most likely require several office visits. This fungus is everywhere: in the gym, our floors at home, our shoes. We have to be very diligent about applying the cream and the anti-fungal oil to our toenails twice daily. Your nails will look better after the first visit because the technician uses a small dremel-like grinding tool to grind down the surface of the nail. Then once the nail is thinned they go back over the nail with a state of the art pinpoint laser to help kill the fungus. All in all if you suffer from toenail fungus and/or skin rash on the bottom of your feet and between your toes, go see Dr. Michael Stein, the Foot Dr. Of the East Bay and he'll fix you up! This place is beyond awesome. I've been going here, and seeing Dr. Stein for almost a year. I picked this place randomly out of the white pages, because it was near my residence. I started with laser surgery on my toes to remove the blackened toe nails all eight of them. The Doctor, and his staff were and still are very courteous, kind, gentle, and understanding. I then had a buionectomy on both feet along with 2 hammer toes and 2 tailors buions. I didn't walk for four months. I am writing this review for my treatment of nail fungus with the laser. It has been very successful. It took almost a year but my results are surprising. I had thick yellow, sometimes green nails on both my big toes.Now they look almost like normal nails. They probably need to grow a little more to get the last remnant of discoloration but I can wear open shoes w/o nail polish to cover my nails. I decided to do laser treatment after seeing a groupon for Laser fungus nail treatment . I did the treatment and then 2 more follow up treatments and used a fungicide oil on all my toes. I also bought a cleaning system to clean all my shoes of fungus. I am happy with my results and will continue to maintain my toes with the oil. So if you have this problem, I would recommend Dr. Stein but remember it is a long process. No instant fix but I knew that before starting. read more

5-5-11 I have been a patient of Dr. Michael Stein, foot and ankle specialist. I have seen him about four times now. I am a Kaiser member and, I went to Kaiser due to pain on the bottom of my foot. Kaiser told me that they could see nothing. I then saw Dr. Stein. Dr. Stein lightly sanded the bottom of my foot and removed a seed corn and, I walked out of the office with no pain. I saw Dr. Stein again for fungus under many of my toenails. It was extremely unsightly! Again, Kaiser told me that they do not treat toenail fungus as it never seems to go away. Dr. Stein did laser surgery. The fungus is gone and, my feet look remarkably better. I told Dr. Stein that he could show my photos to anyone. I had asked to get a copy of my prescription on 2/6/18, a lady called Soong picked up the phone and was trying to brush me off by not giving me a copy of the prescription. I insisted that I am entitled to a copy of it and asked to speak to her supervisor, she said there is no supervisor and the doctors do not talk to people, then she hanged up the phone. I called her several times and would not pick up so I called her from my Google voice # , unsuspecting it was me she picked up the phone and I told her why she hanged up on me requesting for a copy of the prescription, She told me that she is the owner of the building and the business and told me that I can go to talk to her if I have any problems and hanged up again. This is extremely disturbing and unprofessional. Please get a copy of your prescription at the beginning as you will not get it later. read more

I tried it here. Nice people but totally ineffective treatment. And I fully followed the protocol. In fact it made other toes worse.

I am seeing Dr. Stein for a second opinion on a surgical bunionectomy (Bunionectomy w metatarsocuneiform arthrodesis, first ray) I had on Jan 22, 2014 with Kaiser P. The surgery involved in breaking the joint where the big toe adheres to the top of your foot; putting the toe in a strait position and then screwing it together. As Dr. Stein noted, "that is a lot of work". After being non weight bearing for almost 3 months and rehabbing (boot, shoe, regular tennis shoes, stretching, PT) my foot seemed to be taking a turn for the worse vs improving. The first toe was crooked again, my foot began to turn up (vs level) and I had lost downward mobility in my first toe (after following the stretching regime and PT). This plus a big, ugly scar. After moving to the east bay shortly after it started going "down hill", I booked an apt with another Kaiser DPM, this time in San Leandro. His assessment was: 1. screws are loose 2. there is no fusion at the met-cuneo joint (what the screws were holding together) I was then told there were 2 options: going back in a cast (which he didn't think would do anything) and performing revision surgery which included putting in a place and doing a bone graft (taken from my heel). To say the least, I am extremely nervous and cautious about "going under the knife again" and being in bed, off my foot, in rehab for another 6 months. Dr Stein is helping me deicide if that is truly the best course of action (or only course of action at this point) or if he suggests that something else be done. read more

After many years of dealing with fungus under my toe nails I went to Dr. Stein. My first laser appt was 3 months ago and I have been very good at using the nail care oil treatment morning and night for 3 months. I just went in for my 2nd laser treatment and my toenails look a lot better. I'm pleased with the results so far as I watch my nails grow out. I have another appt. in Oct for my final laser procedure. Dr. says it takes a year to see the new nails completely grow out. Despite the cost, I'm very happy with the results so far. I would rate Dr. Stein a 5 star for professionalism and the procedure, but the cost for 3 treatments is high so I gave him 4 stars. read more

I went for toe fungus treatment last Jan 2011. My toes were thick, yellow and discolored with blue & purple. I was very embarrassed to wear sandals because they were so ugly. I received the laser treatment at Dr Stein's office. Everyone was caring, professional and a patient advocate. I am a seasoned RN and I know what excellent patient care is. I went to my 3 month check-up yesterday and I was amazed at the difference. Dr Stein showed me the original photos of my toes before treatment and there is really a major difference! My toes are now clearer and less thick and it will take a few months more for them to be completely clear. I have faithfully used the creams and toes drops that Dr Stein prescribed and being compliant is what made the difference. My toes look so much better and I can now wear sandals comfortably. Though I've never visited a podiatrist office before this, I must say that my recent experience at Dr. Stein's office was really terrific. Unfortunately for the last 3 years I've been suffering with toenail fungus that I believe I contracted at one of those hot tub rental places. It's been awful, ugly and painful to my formerly pretty feet. I had tried EVERYTHING to get rid of it, topical treatments including over the counter stuff, tea tree oil, lemon juice and on and on. You get the picture. It was just horrible, I was ashamed to let anyone see my feet...no more open toe shoes or sandals.I finally found Dr. Stein, and went in for the new FDA approved treatment he offers. The appointment time was really convenient for me, and I've been following Dr.'s directions for after care, to make sure this goes away FOR GOOD. I did the three laser treatments for $1000, and bought a bunch of various topicals for around $100 extra. They didn't work. It has been about a year so I can confirm that the process didn't work for me. To be honest, I saw very little improvement, if any. I subsequently talked to other friends and doctors who either have done laser treatments or are familiar with the process. I was told there are plenty of places that can do the treatments for a lot less - closer to $500 or $600. If you are still interested in laser treatments, definitely shop around, and be aware that they certainly don't work for everybody. I know a friend who also shelled out bucks for laser treatments and they did work, but only temporarily. Ultimately, he had to do the pills, which finally fixed the problem. read more

It has been nearly a year since I last saw Dr Stein for treatment of foot and toe fungus. When I left his office last year I was nearly healed of my fungus condition. Now when I look at my feet I am amazed at the results of healing and I feel that the community must know how enduringly well I was served by Dr. Stein's office and Dr. Stein himself from his treatments and prescriptions. There is a war between the podiatric and dermatological communities on fungus treatment. Dr. Stein gets results that no dermatologist has ever managed for me over a lifetime of troubles with foot fungus. I also want address the Yelp comment about Dr Stein up-selling. That is absolute nonsense. The treatments are not free but the office bills in manageable amounts that make the treatments quite reasonable, particularly when one considers the results. Dr. Stein also goes the extra mile to assist patients with finding the best prices for the ointments that are required. I feel that the whole treatment was a bargain and blessing. read more

I agree with Eric's review the laser treatments and all the products they push to treat the nail fungus are ineffective even though you follow the plan Dr. Stein recommended. I was on the treatment plan for over seven months and the nails still look the same as when he started the treatment. In my last visit Dr. Stein was recommending a fourth round of laser and pushing more products to cure the toenail fungus. I was very skeptical and disappointed as I spent over $1300 and there was no improvement and the toenails are still infected with fungus. When I advised Dr. Stein I do not have the budget to continue these expensive treatments he then stated I could apply for care credit card and continue the laser treatments. Dr. Stein asked me several times and was quite pushy to sell me more expensive products and of course more lasers. Then Dr. Stein hit me with the aggressive used-car-salesman approach. Once he figured out I was not going to continue the laser treatments he did not want to trim the nails as it was done on the previous appointments. I did some research and found out that the laser they use Genesis Plus Cutera laser is ineffective and the best laser for stubborn toe nail fungus wouid be Pinpoint laser. This office does not offer Pinpoint laser. I feel Dr. Stein is not being honest with patients from the get go. He talks to you and tells you that you only need a couple of laser treatments and it will clear up. Later on he keeps trying to sell you more laser treatments and the treatment plan is not working. Please do research and take my advice and Eric's and don't waste your hard earned money trying to get rid of toenail fungus here,. The treatment does not work. Groupon should no longer offer laser treatment coupons with Dr. Stein as it is a big scam. Very disappointed :( read more
