I was taken to the examination room promptly. I didn't have to wait at all. Dr. Yim provided prompt and professional service in a timely manner. He is very friendly and not at all intimidating. The support staff are also very friendly and helpful. The office returns calls promptly. The first hour of parking is free and the parking structure is annexed to the building which provides for easy access. Although located in a Queen's POB, these ophthalmologists are not part of the Queen's system. I saw Dr. Yim because my ophthalmologist is out of town. It turns out that they are good friends. Dr. Yim is an amazing ophthalmologist and an even more wonderful person. After every prescription, he calls me to check up on whether or not it's working out for me. Half a year ago, I had a chalazion on my eye and I entrusted Dr. Yim to remove it for me. I was extremely cautious in choosing a doctor as this person would be operating around my eye area - eek. Dr. Yim is one of the best if not the best ophthalmologist in Honolulu. I was referred to Dr. Yim by some friends for a growth on my eye lid that was not going away. From the time I walked into the office I felt it was very professional. His staff was very friendly and helpful and I was taken back to the room after a very short wait in the waiting room. Dr. Yim was excellent because he not only made the diagnosis quickly but he took the time to explain what was going on and why I was having the issue. He also took the time to discuss treatment which was a minor surgical procedure to remove it. What sets Dr. Yim apart from other doctors I have seen in the past is that he discussed the surgery, discussed the care right after the surgery and how long the healing process should take. The procedure itself was quick and the only minor discomfort (which was to be expected) was when he numbed my eyelid. My name is Pedro (Pete) JL Igitol, from Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands. I am a new patient of Dr. Michael C. Yim, to whom I was referred by my Hawaii PCP. I had previously seen other eye doctors but was not satisfied with the outcome of their service. Dr. Yim's diagnosis of my glaucoma symptoms is thorough and his findings were professionally explained, part-by-part, as well as his intention to counter the problem. Thanksgiving has come and gone. Being a senior citizen I decided to do an inventory of those times I have expressed gratitude or thanks for acts of kindness. Not only had I failed to say thank you more times than I care to admit, but worse, there were many times when I took those acts of kindness for granted. Many will say my actions now, are too little too late, but I would like to think, or hope, that it is never too late to say thank you. Certainly being brought up as a Christain, I was taught that it was never too late to recognize your benefactor and to give thanks. With that in mind some years ago, my primary doctor moved to the mainland, and my new doctor became Dr. Brandon Takase, a local boy, born and raised here in Hawaii. Upon my examination, Dr. Takase detected early onset cataracts, and suggested that he refer me to Dr. Yim, another local boy whom he had gone to medical school with here in Hawaii. Thank you Dr. Takase. Dr. Yim graciously agreed to take me on as a patient. Upon examination, Dr. Yim confirmed the cataracts in both eyes, but to my dismay detected glaucoma. While there is no cure for glaucoma, Dr. Yim told me that because it has been detected very early, there were several options available to me to slow down the advance of this terrible disease. Dr. Yim immediately prescribed a medication, which was immediately denied by my insurance carrier. At this time, Dr. Yim's assistant, Bernadette, immediately began to appeal their denial. Despite their continued denial, Bernadette was tenacious in her efforts for appeal, and ultimately was successful in getting my insurance carrier to reverse their denial for the medication. Despite the proven track record for this medication, and for reasons beyond my understanding and ability to explain, every year Dr. Yim prescribes the medication, it is denied by my insurance carrier, the denial is appealed by Bernadette, and after much effort the denial is reversed by my insurance carrier and I get the medicine. Each and every year. For this reason, and many others, it is Bernadette, and not Dr. Yim, who is my "Guardian Angel". Thank you Bernadette. For several years, the progress of my cataracts matched the speed of a glacier. Prior to my cataract surgeries, Dr. Yim informed me that because of my Northern European roots, I ran the risk of additional complications during my surgeries. Suddenly this summer, the cataracts speeded up requiring surgery. At the time of my 1st surgery in my left eye, I was legally blind in that eye. In addition, I am either near or far sighted, I can't remember which. At the time of my 1st surgery, Dr. Yim rescheduled my surgery so that I was his last patient, so that he could have the additional time required, should complications arise, as well as having the additional surgerical instruments available should they be required. So prior to my 1st surgery, Dr. Yim prepared for: 1. cataract surgery 2. possible complications 3. corrective lens for my near/far sighted vision 4. insertion of a stent as a preventive measure for my glaucoma. The 1st surgery went exceedingly well with no complications. I was so pleased with Dr. Yim that I immediately suggested to my wife in the strongest possible terms, who has eye issues of her own, (macular degeneration), that she take Dr. Yim as her eye doctor. My wife whom I love and respect in more ways than we have time for, is a Japanese National whose English is limited. Please keep in mind that at the time, my wife already had an eye doctor who was doing a great job, was a female, and most importantly was born and raised in Japan, and spoke fluent Japanese. I realize that I am a male and for most of my life have only known male doctors. So I might be biased when I say most importantly her doctor spoke Japanese. Maybe for a woman, having your physician be the same sex, might be the most important. And while we are on the subject, some time ago I experienced severe back spasms, and balance issues resulting in repeated falls necessitating a trip to the ER where my male doctors incorrectly diagnosed my medical issues. It was my female doctor who correctly identified my problem requiring a neurologist. I was immediately referred to one for examination and within 24 hours of getting the results was receiving the 1st of 2 surgeries for a brain tumor. So thank you to that female doctor, whose name I can not recall. I am glad to report that my wife decided to transfer to Dr. Yim and that he graciously accepted her as a patient. The day before my scheduled 2nd cataract surgery, my wife developed eye issues related to her macular degeneration. Dr. Yim agreed to briefly examine her prior to my surgery, to make sure she did not need to visit the ER. I transferred care to Dr. Michael Yim at Sugiki Portis Eye Center. I needed a routine annual eye exam and a new prescription for contacts/glasses. From the beginning, Dr. Yim's staff was very helpful and friendly. His assistant checked me in and obtained a detailed history of my current and past medical care. Dr. Yim was very thorough and carefully explained in detail his findings throughout each step of the exam. He recognized the severe dryness of my eyes from years of contact use and recommended increased use of my glasses to help with my chronic eye irritation. Dr. Yim was recommend by a friend. My eye was severely irritated and I was having trouble opening it. Dr. Yim made me feel very comfortable during the exam. He was patient and very thorough. He prescribed medication for both eyes and scheduled a follow up to make sure it cleared up properly. I'm used to doctors just prescribing medication and telling me to call if the symptoms don't go away. So I really appreciated that from Dr. Yim. During the follow up visit Dr. Yim gave me a full eye exam. I was aware I had a slight astigmatism but my previous eye doctor said my normal contacts were adequate. Dr. Yim took the time to fit me with specialized contacts so I could make an educated decision on which felt more comfortable.
