Dr. Goldberg is quite the character. I was generous to give him two stars because he helped my son slightly. He's passionate about his work but his shortcoming are many: 1. He believes his protocol is the only right solution. That it's a one size that fits all approach. 2. He focuses on himself and his protocol rather than understanding the complexities of his patients. 3. He rants a lot and has many conspiracy theories. Repeats himself constantly. 4. He is not open to alternative interventions that doesn't require medication. 5. Due to a high volume of patients, you feel a disconnect. I also think because he is so caught up with his protocol, he never really invests in his patients. 6. He dismisses your concerns and doesn't listen well. 7. He is very stubborn and hard headed. If part of his protocol isn't working, he won't listen. He thinks his way is the only right solution. 8. His staff is mediocre and not that friendly. 9. Wait times are ridiculous! Expect to wait at least an hour but closer to two hours. 10. He can be extremly unprofessional! He yelled at me during a phone consultation because I stopped his "crazy" diet due to my son was reacting to it badly. His approach is a small piece to the puzzle of recovery. Many doctors use the same protocol but utilize more treatments. I would recommend Dr. Goldberg if you are looking for only conventional medicine to treat your child. It's a simple approach by administering pills and changing your child's diet slightly. What I find ironic is that I read his book before I visited him and was impressed because he accuses other doctors/medicine in being so narrow minded. That they don't think outside the box. You can imagine my surprise when I found out what a hypocrite he was because he has only ONE protocol. That's it! If you tell him his protocol isn't working or lacking, watch out! I would NOT recommend him if you are open minded to alternative medicine to include homeopathic, herbs and vitamins. We still use part of his protocol but have expanded with a more natural and holistic approach with obviously another doctor and found more success. Dr. Goldberg is a rare breed. He truly cares about what's happening with our child. He may come off a little rough sometimes but that just shows us how much passion he has for helping our son. The diet is tough to follow with today's fast food but with planning it can be done. My wife and I have even starting eating the diet as well so it's easier and we both feel better. Believe me, I was a big disbeliever. Dr. Goldberg doesn't make us come to his office every week like some doctors do. He does phone consults which are great. Yes he runs behind on time, what doctor doesn't right? Ok, maybe a little longer than others but since it's just a phone call and I can keep handling other things it's not a big deal. I would give him five stars but that's unrealistic for anything to be perfect in my opinion. The changes I've seen in my son and other patients he has almost earned it though. Can't believe the difference this doctor has made in my niece! Previously diagnosed Autistic she is now in a regular class with No Aide! So I was feeling really tired not just sleepy but not wanting to get out of the bed tired. It was beginning to make me feel depressed I didn't want to do anything but stay home in bed! Well I am too young for that so I went on the internet and googled my symptoms and you know how that goes. So after ruling out some terminal illness LOL I decided I must have CFIDS or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I checked around and found out Dr. Michael Goldberg was a pioneer in this illness and had a lot of recovered patients. I had to get my past records, which I don't have much of but Laurie and Angie were so nice in helping me get all my required stuff in. So I go to my appointment and meet with Dr. Goldberg, he was very thorough and asked me a ton of questions. He was really nice to me and did not make me feel like a hypochondriac as other doctors have. I then had a physical exam, Rachel did a tympanogram on me to check the fluid in my ears as I had complained I was stuffy (TY Rachel for being gentle). Dr. Goldberg then recommended some blood tests to check things out! So I come back 2 weeks later and guess what I have iron deficiency with low iron storage!! Not a terminal illness not even chronic fatigue syndrome. Dr. Goldberg put me on the appropriate dose of iron and several months later I am happy to report I am a new person, back to myself, sleeping better and with much more energy. I have read Dr. Goldberg's book 'The Myth of Autism'. It is a true example of research a physician of Dr. Goldberg's caliber will do to save children. He is first and foremost a brilliant doctor. I grew up with an autistic cousin who saw this man as a child and my aunt told my single mother about him in which my brother my mother and I flew out to california to be falsely diagnosed with things we did not have. He sees there is no progress but continues with the same protocol and doesn't care about the consequences of these meds on the body. we saw him for two and half year, spend a fortune and all we got was side effects from all the meds. He should listen more and talk less. Not only has our son improved but all of our family is aware and are eating healthier to keep our brains functioning to a ripe old age. We can beat autism and other immune deficiency diseases. Dr Goldberg is a brilliant doctor. I have never made that claim about another physician. My 4 yr old son is doing better than ever under his protocol! We started with Dr Goldberg 5 months ago and my son's atec score is down to 15! It was 69 at one point. Dr G is extremely sharp and his memory is impressive. I can't believe how he remembers all the details of my son's chart as if he only had a dozen patients. I was afraid to see Dr Goldberg originally due to bad reviews and unfortunately we wasted over a year with a highly regarded MAPS (DAN) doctor. Dr Goldberg has always been kind and respectful to us. I am a very assertive Mom that goes a mile a minute and has the tenancy to annoy physicians. Dr Goldberg answers all my questions and speaks to me as an equal. His staff is kind and professional. If I email, his staff can usually go over my questions with him and respond to me that day. He is very passionate about his protocol and this may cause him to be a bit stubborn. In my experience, he does tend to be right when he disagrees with me, so now I trust him. ** I see some ignorant reviews. For example Barbara states that Dr G claims that diet alone will cure autism. This is very untrue. Although, these kids need to follow diet as part of the protocol. Dr. Goldberg was recommended to me by a friend in San Diego. We were indeed excited to have someone offer us hope back in 2001 for our son who was diagnosed with autism. There were red flags (like " tie my son to the bed if he kept waking up in the middle of the night" ) but I was so grateful to find someone who seemed to care so much. Then our son started gaining weight - like 10 pounds a month - on his regiment of pills. We tried the diet for several months but there was no noticeable change in our child. Unfortunately his protocol seemed to adversely change our son's metabolism and our previously tall and thin child continued to gain excessive weight each month and is now severely overweight. Had my child with him and did see progress but Dr. G drove me nuts and his demands on reporting and fees was excessive. I'll just repost the rants about him that I posted to my autism group about my experience there so you can understand what I was going through with that doctor: Thanks guys for letting me vent...this will be long rant but I need to get this off my chest.... Okay, so every time I call or see him he spends exactly half the time talking about the politics of "A" and what we parents on the front line should be doing about it. Okay, okay, I got the message the first time when he spent 2 hours of my first consultation talking about it. That said, I know it is important and I want to do something about it but its not like I'm not already completely frazzled with having an "A" child that I am turning over every stone to help. At $205/20 minutes, I'd rather focus on my son's lab results. He also likes to bellyache endlessly about those bad parents that have DAN doctors. God forbid I should reveal the vitamins, CLO, and enzymes I tried with [my ch before we started his protocol. So, I don't know about anyone else, but his diet drives me mad. His book did not provide enough concrete science for me to really support his version of the diet. That said, if I am to follow his diet couldn't his staff put together a comprehensive list of allowed and disallowed foods and food brands...or hire a dietician to do so? The "do" and "donts" just aint cutting it - it says no tropical fruits...what? Okay so tropical fruits turns out to include even coconut and tapioca...is it too much trouble to list all these things...and still I want some science to substantiate removing each item. Now every time we consult with him he gets on my case about rising reactions and says I must be giving him allergy foods because each month it rises. The thing that has changed is that I went from GF/CF to Goldbergs diet where he allows processed breads and such (which I mostly avoid). I guess I need to go back to a strict GF/CF because his results were better. I always come away from these visits feeling like I was a bad kid told off by my strict Dad. Goldberg and his staff have absolutely no inkling of the severe eating self restrictions son has and his tenacity. Their advise - stop giving him junk food and wait until he is so hungry he will eat what you give him. They truly do not know these kind of eaters. My son will go for 4 + days without eating and will lose all his weight. I have no doubt he would go without food until he died after what I have seen, so its not a matter of waiting him out to get him to eat something different. The last few consults Goldberg has really pissed me off because he keeps talking about remediating my son academically. He keeps asking me what my plans are for educating son and catching him up to his peers. I keep telling him that son is savant-like, has a photographic memory, has been reading since 18 months, doing math, has tested 3 grades above his peers in every category. Nonetheless he told me that when we are done with the software list he recommends that son will be able to intuitively name the colors, letters, and numbers...WHAT?!!!!?...didn't you just hear me say my son is academically 3 grades ahead of his peers!?!! Okay, so I get the software list in the mail that they kindly sent and its this outdated software from the 80's for babies. Meanwhile my son is doing Rosetta stone in German and kicking butt so bad in every WII game that no one wants to go up against him. So Goldberg asked me a month ago what my plans are and I unfortunately failed that one when I said I was going to address son's deficits by putting him in a social group. Goldberg nearly bit my head off because he is still stuck on the academic thing and explained that these kids don't need all this therapy and social groups; that they are going to get all that intuitively as their brains heal. I am probably more inclined to agree with him than your average "A" mom, but as far a social skills, I explained to him, there aren't always the same opportunities for kids who have been delayed and branded by others aside from the fact that after being delayed, sometimes they need a few things explicitly explained and demonstrated. Even my daughter who had her "A" diagnosis removed last year still needs some specific explainations on nuances that other kids would clue into. He was all against that and said I should just get son involved with other kids. So, last week I had son attend Camp Surf. Monday at pick up they let me know how bad and awful he was and that it wouldn't be tollerated. Tuesday they called me to pick him up at half day after he stripped off his clothes and was standing in the middle of the camp screaming naked. By Thursday I pulled him out entirely. My son is 9 years old now and is in the gifted program in school! We went to Dr. Goldberg when he was 3 and our pediatrician told us there wasn't anything we could do about his 'autism'. Dr. Goldberg treated me and I recovered from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ! I had been seen by many specialists but none had an answer for the debilitating fatigue, headaches and muscle pains I was suffering from. He really tries to find the source of your problem not just a bandaid approach. In my case it was viruses affecting my brain . Dr. Goldberg ordered a SPECT scan of my brain. Seeing the blood flow shut down on parts of my brain were eye opening and finally an explanation for my symptoms . As scary as it was to see what my brain was doing on a Spect scan I now know it really is in my head LoL Before your appointment you fill out a bunch of paperwork and have to get copies of past blood , X-rays , consultations from other doctors and such. Our family's experience with Dr. Goldberg was mixed. He is passionate and brilliant and was one of the first (if not THE first) physicians to recognize the autism we are seeing in children today as the manifestation of a complex, but treatable, neuro-immune disease process going on inside the bodies and brains of these children and not a static, unchangeable developmental and psychiatric "disorder." At our initial appointment Dr. Goldberg spent nearly two hours with us, going over our child's history and lab results and discussing the treatment protocol (dietary modifications and gradual introductions of antivirals, antifungals, and eventually psychotropic medication once the body was healthy) with us. We felt energized and encouraged, and for the first several years, our son responded rapidly and we saw major improvements in his health, language, and academic aptitude. Sadly, our experience with him was not all positive. After several years where of consistent progress, our child "plateaued." Dr. Goldberg's response was to alternately accuse us of not following the diet, or to criticize our parenting. I spent the better part of a decade following the man's instructions to the letter, but for the last three years of our association with him, exactly NOTHING changed other than Dr. Goldberg's repetitive ranting at each appointment. If I reported something negative or a new, odd behavior, or if there was an irregularity in the blood work, he would tell me to send him a week's dietary log. He would usually respond simply that the diet "looked fine" and either accuse my child of cheating on the diet (he wasn't) or that I wasn't being a strict enough parent. Sometimes he would eliminate an arbitrary food from his already very restricted diet, but it never made sense. For example, he insisted that (highly allergenic) soybean products were "good" for my child, but that sunflower seeds, which are widely accepted as a good alternative for people with peanut allergies, and which my child is absolutely not allergic or sensitive to, would harm him. Dr. Goldberg doesn't listen to parents or other medical professionals who work with the autism epidemic and insists he's the ONLY one who knows how to treat these children. He is rigid to the extreme and refuses to consider that there might be other triggers that he is missing and failing to address. It is his way or the highway, and he did threaten to drop my child from his practice on more than one occasion. After serious discussion and consideration, we decided to leave Dr. Goldberg's practice to pursue other avenues of treatment, and I am happy to say that our child is once again making progress. read more

It took 2 months to get an appointment with Dr. Goldberg and how thankful we were/are! We were told about Dr. Goldberg from a physician friend who has a son currently being treated (yes treated not trained) for an illness that affects the brain and manifests itself with 'autistic' like behaviors and mannerisms. We have spent over $30-$50K per year (with ins) for 30+ hours of ABA, speech and Occupational therapies for Eli (age 6). All with minimal results and with his tantrums, outbursts and behaviors increasing . Eli started Nov. 1, 2012 on a prescription anti-viral medication. Within the first week his sleep improved. At the end of the first week, I was cooking breakfast and heard a voice say "Hi Mom". I turned thinking iswas our older son.. it was Eli. It was the first time he said that. My husband said, where did that come from? We have now progressed in the protocol to an anti-fungal med and an SSRI. All with no negative reactions. Eli continues to make daily improvement. He is bright eyed, alert, very inquisitive and has had no tantrums. There is minor stemming when he gets excited but nothing like before. He now engages other children in play at the park. . He is in a class with typical children (no special needs except Eli) The teacher agreed to accept him with his ABA aide prior to Dr. Goldberg. I was so emotional by the time Eli's day ended. I have been teaching for 30 years and have never witnessed anything like today! Amy, as I spoke with you on the phone last night, I was so excited. It was hard to believe then, that today could have topped yesterday. I am starting to realize that there are no limits to what the day will bring! As I mentioned, now that Eli is starting to interact appropriately with his peers, the reinforcement and encouragement from the children adds another positive dimension. Here are some of the highlights from today: *Center time is a joy now. He works HARD with Dawn (his aide). It's amazing what he is showing us he knows. It is also a wonderful time for his language to be developed. I can tell he is becoming more attached to Dawn too. Today he put her chair close to his and asked her to sit down at the centers with him. *Recess is amazing! We start by having him call the names of the kids to line-up. He is starting to say a name or two on his own. Outside he looks so happy, runs with his peers, seems interested when peers initiate contact with him, uses lots of language, comes in willingly and walks in the line appropriately. One of the girls in my class shared a story with me of an encounter she had on the playground with Eli. Classmate: What are doing, Eli? Eli: I am making a castle. This child was so excited to tell me that "Eli used his own words!" The kids are celebrating his progress and are ecstatic with each accomplishment! I had teared up many times. What all of the staff continues to repeat daily is: 1. How physically different Eli looks 2. How happy he seems 3. How the language is flowing all day long. The phrases are turning into sentences and his words are his own. He also is coming up with ways to express what he needs, when he doesn't have the exact words. As I read over my words, it still can't truly express the difference I am seeing! I can't imagine what tomorrow will bring. I really feel that I am witnessing a miracle each day. What a happy, lovable little boy has been inside that body! I can't think of a better gift this holiday season!" What do you think tomorrow will bring? I saw all the 5 star ratings of Dr. Goldberg and have been confused as to why there isn't someone else out there that is a bit disappointed in Dr. Goldberg other than myself. I was relieved to see your rating. I agree with literally everything you said. My son is currently a patient of Dr. Goldbergs and I've been a bit frustrated because we're paying $225 for a 20 minute phone call each month to hear the same thing over and over. Our conversations are mostly about his conspiracy theories and have little to do with my son. We're required to come to his office every 3 months for an office visit of $400 and we have to sit and hear the same rants. When we asked about ABA therapy and all the research that shows that ABA therapy is effective, he actually said "it's all lies!" Over 100 studies have shown that ABA therapy is helpful and yet he actually believes it's "all lies"? Although I agree with his premise (that we need to treat the cause and not the symptoms -- the cause being a virus that resides in the brain), he really turned me off by his black & white, it's my way or the highway mentality.
