I have some hip and knee pain I been resting for a while due to my addiction to crossfit. I never took weeks off and went in 4-5 times a week. This took a toll on me and one side of my hip was the first to let me know that I'd gone overboard. I went to Dr. Ko with what was bothering me and he gave me a few tests to pinpoint where I needed work. What is also nice is that he participates in crossfit himself so we were able to easily communicate about the common movements that I would perform in the gym as well as how my sedentary office job affects my hip. Attended a running clinic by Dr. Ko because I'm participating in a Half Ironman Tri in a couple of months and wanted to improve on my running technique. I've participated in sports most of my life and currently do Crossfit (I'm 50 years old) It was 2 hours and we focused on engaging the major muscle chains of the whole body, especially my core. I noticed a definite improvement through using his techniques and exercises. He also offered suggestions to help with a more efficient style of running, not heel strike but mid-sole strike. I hurt my knee in November and it's been a really slow process healing. I contacted Michael in February and he made time to see me as soon as possible. My experience with Mike and Movement IQ was phenomenal! I hurt my knee while training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and was feeling a lot of pain and discomfort. I contacted Mike to schedule an appointment and within a few minutes, he contacted me back and I was able to get an appointment within a couple of days. Upon arriving at the appointment, I was warmly greeted by Mike. He thoroughly went through and checked my knee and performed specific tests on it. He explained what was causing the pain and was able to provide specific exercises to make it better. Mike is personable, attentive, and very informative. Not once did I feel like I was just another customer to him, and did not feel pressured into anything. He really cares about your well-being and really tries to help you out. I cannot recommend Mike and Movement IQ enough. If you have any pain or need Physical Therapy, Mike is the person to go to. I know I will be going to him again should I need any physical therapy in the future (hopefully I won' need to). As a side note, although Mike is great to see for any sports or non-related sports related injuries or rehab needed, for anyone that does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and needs Physical Therapy, I recommend to go and see Mike, as he has a lot of experience in the sport, and knows the types of injuries and movements that can occur and that are required while doing it. I'm happy to say that I'm 4 weeks out and hip pain free. As a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu I've lived the adages, "No Pain No Gain", "Work Through the Pain" and "Pain is Weakness Leaving the Body." Over my 18 years in the sport I can count the mornings I didn't have pain easier than the mornings I did. At 46 I need a knee replacement. I take Celebrex until I can work up the courage for the major surgery. And yes, I still train albeit limited and only with selective partners. Doctors all scratch their heads why I still do it. It's high time I hang up my spurs, they say. Most doctors don't know what BJJ is. For the past 4 months I've had pain on the side of my hip, right where the drawstring on my gi pants ride. My doctor said it was soft tissue then shrugged and told me I should stop training. Said it was time. Said I wasn't 20 anymore. That's where Michael Ko, Physical Therapist comes in. He trains and we met on the mat. He offered to help. I shrugged and said arthritis, what can you do? He asked me to let him try. With nothing to lose and everything to gain I popped in for a visit. After asking me to walk and stand and lift he determined that my limited mobility in my knee was causing my hip to compensate, in effect I was dragging my leg behind me. We did stretching but mostly he educated me on how my knee injury, my hip pain and my gait were all related. My pain didn't go away right away. It took about two weeks and some more stretching. Mostly I pay very close attention to when I'm tired and start dragging my leg. Regardless if you are a world champion or weekend warrior you owe it to your body to stop ignoring the pain and get it fixed. My husband is in his mid 50's. He is in better shape than 99% of men his age because of his diet but primarily because he trains in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 5 to 6 days per week. His addiction, for lack of a better word, causes injuries. The one that nagged him the most was his shoulder. He had an MRI and was diagnosed with a torn rotator cuff and a swollen labrum. It was very painful but he refused to let it rest. He mainly tried to do bjj without using his left arm. My husband suffered sleepless nights, could not take off his shirt by himself and basically lost all the strength in his shoulder. He could deal with the pain but took aspirin on a daily basis. Dr. Ko has hands of magic. I teach martial arts all day and it takes a toll on the body. For the past 2 months I've been noticing a limited range of mobility and some very obvious imbalances. In steps Dr. Ko!!! At your typical physical therapy facility, you may see the practitioner for up to 10 minutes. They then assign you some exercises you can do at home and hand you off to either a physical therapy assistant or aide. I know this from both sides as a patient and from working in a physical therapy office. Now, what Dr. Ko does should be happening in more therapy offices. He spends the whole hour with you, assessing and manipulating the affected area. I walked away feeling immediate relief and was given some exercises I can do at home to continue feeling good. Mike has helped me with problems arising from an old hip injury. Not only was he able to alleviate my knee, back, and shoulder pain immediately, he also taught me exercises for retraining correct alignment and movement. Michael is the best! I was not able to walk (AT ALL- I was bed ridden and in a wheelchair) for a month and a half due to an inflammation in my joint. I found Movement IQ on Yelp and thought I'd try it out because it was the closest PT to my house. Michael worked around my schedule which was very convenient. My first visit with him, he told me that realistically, I won't be walking for another 3-4 weeks. Within that first week, I was already on my feet. I was in the worst pain of my life. disk herniation at C3. After two months of doctor visits, Chiropractic treatments and massive amount of Norcos, steroids and anti-inflammatories nothing was working. I was convinced I was heading for surgery. After my first visit with Michael I walked out, looked at my wife and told her I feel better. For the first time in months I feel better. I actually think I might be able to avoid surgery now. Michael's approach was to not only focus on the area of injury but the entire spine, chest and neck. It paid off. About six weeks into my treatment Michael was going to switch me to twice a week. I had only been going once a week.. But then he change gears and said you know what, you're doing so much better I don't think you need to come in twice a week. I suffered a sports injury that injured my right shoulder. I experience lots of pain daily and had very limited movement with my right arm. After three weeks, I went to Movement IQ Physical Therapy. After the first time Dr. Ko worked on my shoulder; the pain was significantly reduced and I was able to use my arm once again. I saw him a few more times. I first met Dr. Ko when I was training to be a yoga instructor. He came to one of our trainings to speak about sports injuries. I was immediately impressed with his knowledge and expertise, and referred him to my husband, who has chronic tendinitis in both arms.
