Fantastic surgeon, which is unfortunate, because he is extremely condescending, dismissive and judgmental. Most unfortunate though, was his complete disregard when I raised my concern for three thyroid nodules found on an MRI. I stated my symptoms and he basically said, and this is not word for word, that they couldn't be causing any of the symptoms presented. Well, it turns out I have thyroid cancer. Gaslighting patients, especially women, has become all too commonplace. Full disclosure, Moya made me, a patient who pays out of pocket, cry after our interaction. Besides her insensitivity, she was discourteous in every interaction I had with her. I missed an appointment because, no exaggeration, my partner died. I did not want her sympathy, but was shocked when she reprimanded me. Listen, I respect people's time. But to be made to feel guilty about missing a doctor's appointment over the death of a spouse is despicable. I then got a lecture from Dr. Setzen as well during my appointment. When I went to pay my bill, she intentionally went out of her way to extend kindness and an upbeat interaction with another patient, and then completely did a 180 with me. It is obvious at this point I will never return to his practice. Disappointed and disgusted, to say the least. I'm an undergraduate premedical student who experienced congestion, nasal breathing difficulties, and nose bleeds, after nasal spray treatment, for the past two years. Dr. Setzen literally changed my life! I badly deviated my septum playing football in 1979 and lived with it until a few months ago. I am not a fan of surgery and was concerned about the recovery so I put off taking care of it until recently. I finally gave in to the surgery because I was waking up 5-6 times a night and never felt rested. Both my nasal passages were almost completely blocked. I was diagnosed with asthma and allergies early on in life. Breathing via my nose progressively worsened as I aged. I was told that the difficulties were merely a result of allergies/asthma and that the only solution is allergy medications. No allergist or doctor ever suggested I should see an ENT. I assumed doctors already ruled out everything -- after all, when you get a physical the doctor does look up your nose! In my mid/late twenties my nose troubles led to difficulty falling asleep and resultant tiredness. Oftentimes, I would get sick with a cold and feel incapacitated for weeks as a result, as during those times my nasal passages would be 100% blocked. It turned out that my nasal passages were very tight/crooked and my sinuses were basically closed off. Around six months ago, I had a septoplasty (my condition required bone repositioning) and turbinate reduction, requiring nasal splints and packaging post-surgery. My breathing is much improved and I fall asleep easily; its great not to toss and turn. My post-nasal drip has also been reduced. I still use allergy medication and nasal sprays but their effect on my breathing has increased enormously since my nasal passages are now opened up. Now to be fair I have to say the recovery was WORSE than I expected even after reading some brutal accounts of recovery on the internet...having your nose packed when you have asthma is not fun and I had terrible post nasal drip during recovery. Highly Recommend - Excellent Physician with a Remarkable Bedside Manner I am a 27 year old female that has had recurring tonsillitis since I was in high school. I went to an ENT several years ago who said that my tonsillitis was viral, there was really nothing to do but "wait it out", and that if it happened again I would most likely need a tonsillectomy. From then until recently, I've had tonsillitis several times, but not recurring so frequently that I thought I would need to see a doctor. I also had facial pain, snoring, and obstructed breathing from my nose but never noticed or thought anything of it. I recently moved to Great Neck and was getting recurring episodes of tonsillitis. I decided to visit Dr. Setzen although I was reluctant since I thought I already knew what he was going to tell me. I've never been more wrong and I am so thankful I got a second opinion from Dr. Setzen. First of all, Dr. Setzen went beyond what any ENT I've seen before has done in response to my tonsillitis. He used a pediatric nasal endoscope (my nose is small), which couldn't fit since I had a severely deviated septum. On my follow-up visit, Dr. Setzen performed a CT Scan in his office, just to be extra thorough. The CT Scan revealed a cyst the size of an apricot in my right maxillary sinus and another smaller cyst in my left maxillary sinus. The cyst was large enough to potentially impede on my eye causing vision problems and a collapsing of the orbital floor. Dr. Setzen took the time to explain my situation and what my options were going forward. He was very knowledgeable about his specialty, but made it easy for me to understand and answered all of my questions. He has an amazing bedside manner and made me feel confident going into surgery. I also appreciated his consistent positive attitude, especially during my recovery. In one surgery I had a tonsillectomy, adenoidectomy, endoscopic sinus surgery to remove the cysts, a turbinectomy to open my sinus passageways, and a septoplasty to straighten my deviated septum. My surgery experience was very positive, with minimal bleeding and no bruising. I also had no bleeding from my tonsillectomy, which is something I heard horror stories about from friends. His staff is amazing and called to follow-up after my surgery. They also genuinely care about how I was doing and really put the patient's needs first. It was great to feel like I had a real "team" on my side as I was going into several surgeries and recovering. I also am out of his insurance plan and he was very reasonable and made sure that I got the treatment I needed. I am now a month post-surgery and am feeling so much better. My quality of life has greatly improved. I really learned the value of a second opinion and not ignoring your symptoms and wished that I had went to Dr. Setzen years ago. I was a very frightened person when Dr. Setzen told me that I needed surgery to open the sphenoid sinus which was totally blocked with infection. He explained that, if left untreated, it could cause a brain abcess or blindness. There were two additional problems. The thick bone around the area could possibly prevent his being able to correct the problem plus other personal health conditions necessitated that this be done under general anesthesia in the hospital. He fixed everything!! AND - with a minimum amount of discomfort and practically no pain. I don't know if anyone else could have done this, In addition, his kindness and caring before, during and after surgery was amazing. Do not go to this doctor if you have chronic sinus condition. I have had this conditon for 48 years. I allowed Setzen to do the balloon procedure a year ago. Everything was fine and I could breathe better but when I got another sinus infection. He refused to treat me saying I now have migrain not sinus problems. I was very sick for weeks yet he refused to treat me. I went to another doctor who cultured my mucus which showed multiple bacteria in my sinus. I suffered unnecessarily. When I got the proper treatment, I am finally doing better. In his arrogance he decides what your problem is and does not listen to your experience. My parents started taking me to Dr. Setzen when I was toddler. I used to have constant ear infections when I was baby so he performed a surgery with ear tubes to cure that. I haven't had an issue since. I have been seeing him my entire life after that. Throughout my teens and early twenties I would get sinus infections 4-5 times a year. Dr. Setzen was rather careful with the diagnoses of a sinus infection every time, waiting for the infection to fully develop before putting me on antibiotics. At 22, I just finished college and was about to start my first job in the airlines. He explained how I was a candidate for septoplasty surgery. He explained how I would noticed significant changes in my breathing and stop the frequent sinus infections I was having. I agreed to have the surgery. He scheduled the surgery only a week and half after the day I made the appointment. After the surgery, the recovery was quite painful for the first two days. I questioned myself if I was right in agreeing to the surgery. After 3 days, the pain was not that bad so I was able to switch to Advil. A week after the surgery the splints were removed to keep my septum in place and I noticed a difference instantly with how easy it was to breathe. So far it has been one year after the surgery and I've only had two colds and no sinus infections. I'm an athlete, working out has been a joy. My endurance has increased tremendously (kinda comes with airways that are no longer obstructed). To conclude, Dr. Setzen has done my family and I wonders for our health. Approximately 26 years ago I was operated on by Dr. Michael Setzen. From the official records the diagnosis was: "Pathology" - in the form of a right frontal sinus mucocele which had eroded the posterior wall of the frontal sinus with involvement of the brain coverings. This was an extremely "life threatening" sinus condition which necessitated surgery that lasted for approximately "15 hours". When the surgery was successfully completed, Dr. Setzen told me that the infection was so close to the brain that within a week, I would have been dead. Boy did I Goof!... I went to Dr. Setzen for regular visits10 years ago for sinus issues and ended up having surgery. Everything was great after surgery, no breathing or sleeping problems. Dr Setzen had me on quarterly visits for in office cleanings. I got lazy and stopped going. My work environment has very poor ventilation and dusty. Though I never had a sense of smell or taste I just lived with that fact and never pursued it. I could not smell gasoline or natural gas. After 10 years or so I had bad sinus infections, headaches, couldn't concentrate and was irritable. I saw Dr Setzen and after a pic was taken (in office, very convenient!) we decided on surgery again. My daughter started seeing Doctor Setzen when she was 4 years old, she was constantly getting ear infections. Doctor Setzen did surgery to put Tubes in her ears and remove her adenoids. after the surgery no more ear infections. When she was 6 years old she was having terrible sinus issues. Doc Setzen did Endoscopic Sinus Surgery on her and since is doing so much better. My daughter is 9 years old now and her is still doing very well. Doctor Setzen still sees her a few times a year for check ups. Doctor Setzen is a wonderful ENT, he is kind, thorough and listens to what the parent and child have to say. The staff and Dr Setzen were extremely patient and kind to my son. Dr Setzen explained all findings thoroughly and explained necessary procedures that would be needed to address my son's condition. He also suggested to have second opinion if we felt it was warranted which made me feel he was very trustworthy. He performed an Adenoidectomy, Frenectomy and resection of Turbinate's at the Ambulatory Surgical Center at Northwwell Manhasset. Dr Setzen explained everything in detail to my son, me and my husband before the surgery. He made sure he was comfortable and answered all of his questions. The OR staff were also very kind and efficient. I was able to walk him into the OR and stay with him until the anesthesia was administered. This alleviated all of his and my pre-op fears. The surgery was done in less than an hour. He had a mild sore throat that day in which Tylenol worked. Minimal nasal drainage. He was able to go to his friends pool party two days later with no problems. We had follow up one week later at Dr Setzens office with no complications. Our speech therapist said "The Doctor did a great job" Overall great experience.
