Dr. Joel Portnoy is the best ENT. Period. For years I was so frustrated with feeling strain in my voice that I gave up singing completely and desperately missed performing at open mic nights in my free time. He was really my last hope of ever pursuing my passion again. On a whim, one night I Googled "ENT for singers Long Island" and came across his name with raving reviews. Even though my day job has nothing to do with music, and singing is just a pastime I enjoy, he still treated my concerns as though I were Adele on tour having vocal issues! Because singing was clearly so important to me and my happiness, he took my issue just as seriously as if I were a chorus teacher whose career depended on it. He listens thoroughly to your explanations of symptoms/history of treatment and you can tell he truly wants to help his patients find a solution. After following his recommendations, I am so happy to say that I now actually play [paid!] gigs almost weekly in my spare time! Dr. Portnoy gave my voice back to me. For quite some time I'd been experiencing an increasing inability to sing (which was my profession) coupled with a deteriorating speaking voice. Dr. Portnoy allayed my fears with a good bedside manner and an immediate understanding of my problem. The office is state of the art and I was actually able to see my throat on a screen as he did the exam. He then took the time to answer all of my questions and fully explain my diagnosis and treatment plan. The speech therapist he recommended was the perfect fit for my needs. After doing the prescribed exercises for only a short time the rasp began to disappear. Quite some time after my follow up visit I called with a question. Dr. Portnoy returned my call later that day (explaining that his personal policy was to return calls before he leaves the office). That type of care is hard to find... but much appreciated! I found Dr. Portnoy as I was dealing with an anxiety related condition that affected my voice. I had no reference of his care, but when I walked into the office, I immediately felt a warm welcome - from the decor and cleanliness of the office, to the reception with which I was greeted. Upon meeting Dr. Portnoy for the first time, his calm demeanor and melodic voice instantly put me at ease. Meeting with Dr. Joel Portnoy the last 7months has been a great experience. I went for a visit because I was having hoarseness for months and finally made an appointment to see an ENT doctor. Since our initially appointment, Dr. Portnoy has been professional, detailed in explaining all procedures and necessary treatment, patient and empathic to all concerns I expressed and very thorough with every appointment. Dr. Portnoy is one of the best medical professionals I have ever been treated by or known. He is brilliant, caring, considerate, and insightful. I cannot rave enough about Dr. Portnoy. At 46 years old, I needed vocal cord surgery, and was unsure and frightened when I visited his office for the first time. Dr. Portnoy and his staff were absolutely amazing. Check in was a breeze, using an tablet based form which replaced paperwork was a joy. The office was spotless, plenty of parking, easy to get to. Dr. Portnoy answered all of my question prior to my procedure (tube placement to help drain ear). Then after he clearly explained what I should be expecting during recovery. Dr. Portnoy treated my husband after a stroke that left him unable to eat, drink or speak coherently. He told my husband that he would be Speaking and eating in one year with his advice. The timeline was perfect. One year later my husband was speaking better and began Eating soft foods. Shortly after, his food tube was removed and he can Eat whatever he likes.
