I don't even know where to start about my experience with trying to get in to see Dr. Esmer. I…read morecannot write about his bedside manner or how he is in regards to caring for his patients since I didn't get the chance to. After seeing my primary care dr., she recommended that I see a DO, someone more specialized and with more knowledge and guidance than what she's been able to help with the last few years. After letting my primary care dr. gynecologist, and my outpatient care dr. know what the next move was, they were all on board. My primary care dr. recommended a few DO's she knew personally. Once I got home, I started the process of finding a new dr. Either no one was accepting new patients , they retired, or sadly left town. On June 24th., 2024, I spent several hours with my insurance company and calling numerous clinics and private practices to see if they were accepting new patients: that's when I found Osteopathic PDX. After reading the dr's bio and reading a few positive reviews, I called to see if he was welcoming new patients. Dianne, the office manager, collected some information and put me on the books for Aug 26th., 2024, which was the soonest Monday they could see me since Monday's are my days off. I was shocked and supper bummed that the wait was so long to be seen. I patiently waited for that day to come just to receive a call by Dianne, the morning of having to cancel my apt. due to the dr. not coming into the office that day. Dianne rescheduled the apt., and the soonest Monday was September 1st., 2024. This apt. was then again canceled the day of as well. Although I was not happy, both my primary care and treatment dr. encouraged me to make one last ditch effort in rescheduling another apt. I was thinking "the dr. clearly does not like working on Monday's." Yet again, I was rescheduled for Oct., 21st. Sunday night, I received a voicemail by Dianne saying something to the effect that the dr. had something come up and that my apt. would need to be rescheduled. No. No, I sure will never be "rescheduling" another apt. with this dr., screaming out loud. I've now spent the last 4 months time waiting to be seen by this provider, and rescheduling for a 4th time is something I will not do. Working in the medical field myself, I understand that things come up with dr's and or their staff. Unfortunately, having to move patients around or reschedule them is something that happens from time to time. It personally hurts when I have to make these kind of calls to patients. However, Dianne should've known that this was 3rd cancellation now. There's one thing I know working as a surgical assistant, and that the surgeon I work for and myself would have skipped a lunch break, (as we often do anyway), or come to work an hour early, and or stay an hour later to make it right with that one patient; especially for the one who's been cancelled on one too many times. Dr's and their staff often have that ability to do just that and I wish they would've shown the compassion to do so. Perhaps in the future, when the dr. needs to reschedule the patients, you could color code or have a system in place of how many times you've had to cancel that one particular pt. because every time Dianne would call to cancel my apt., it's like she was unaware that she's now called me 3 times prior cancelling my appointments. I truly felt like she had no care whatsoever for my time spent waiting to be seen. That is was just another day at the office. It's a shame that I even have to write this review. And believe me, it's taken me weeks to think about this. I kept asking myself "should I write a review or should I just let it go?" Something over the course of the last few weeks kept nudging me to do so. Maybe now I will feel better about the situation? Maybe I just needed to write all this to get it off my chest? Because I do patient care, I felt the right thing to do is to let whomever know, who's thinking of becoming a new patient here, make aware of my experience with Osteopathic PDX.

I had a difficult neck/rib problem and Dr. Esmer helped me quite a bit in a single session. Several other practitioners including a chiropractor had tried but his session helped me turn the corner on that problem. This office bills some health insurance plans; call to ask. I'm able to see him for a $40 copay; I'm used to paying out of pocket for this sort of treatment so I feel very fortunate. Since the pandemic, he is often booked out several weeks to a month, so plan ahead.

Soon I'll be starting neurofeedback with Dr. Shannon to try to eliminate my migraines, a malady that only developed in the last 5 years. How is that even possible? I'll let you know how it goes. The account manager has yet to follow up with me, but has had no problem adding late fees to my bill. When Dr. Shay remembers to follow up with previous providers and complete paperwork, he is a very friendly and helpful doctor, but he's very inconsistent with those practical parts of medicine. I ultimately changed providers due to lack of follow-up and their new implementation of a required subscription for primary care patients.

While he is capable of a friendly bedside manner, his host of administrative issues and ethically questionable billing practices negatively impacted me--and my health. I would advise others to seek another primary care provider. I scheduled a wellness visit with Shay (Dr. Hosseinion's first name) online a year ago after moving to Portland. During this first visit, we talked through my medical history and he also refilled two existing prescriptions from my prior MD. No physical exam beyond listening to heart/lungs. He wrote me a letter for my employer stating that he had seen me "for an annual wellness visit." Finally, he ordered a single blood test; I declined the standard panel. After the appointment, he billed my insurance company for $390. I wrote to ask about this--my last handful of wellness exams/physicals were covered at 100%--and he told me the care I received was defined as a "problem visit," offering to see me for a second visit to use the wellness exam benefit. I spoke with my insurance company, who confirmed the visit should have been billed as a wellness appointment plus an additional code for extra services. I contacted Shay's offsite billing office to request this change. I was willing to pay for the appointment, but believed it was billed improperly, resulting in an unfairly high balance left to me. It took one year of calls every month or two to get a response: No, he will not change the billing to include the wellness code or compromise on the balance. Why did it take so long to get a response? Per the billing office rep: "There's nothing we could do. We're not in his office. He's very hard to reach." In the meantime, I decided not to return for a second "wellness" visit, as Shay suggested, after my insurance company told me that getting lab results but billing for a wellness visit would be fraudulent. Instead, I waited a month, then requested a copy of my lab results three times in December. And again on Jan 4th. And again on Jan 10th. Finally, I called the lab, where a tech assured me the results were delivered to Shay in late November, less than 24 hours after the test. I sent Shay an email expressing my dismay at the wait; he did not apologize, but said they'd mail me a copy. I waited another couple weeks. When it didn't arrive, an assistant told me it was lost in the mail. I finally went to the office in person and got a paper copy. In the midst of this, the billing office told me part of the reason I wasn't receiving an invoice was because they had the wrong address on file for me - received from Shay's office (which had a copy of my driver's license). In any case, the labs showed a treatable medical issue -- something I would have liked to have known about ASAP. All told, it took me about two months to get that piece of paper. About six months later, and some eight months after the initial appointment, I got an email from Shay. He said he had my lab results and asked me to schedule an appointment. He said he found a problem in them. I would have appreciated more timely, accurate and honest communication from this physician and his assistant regarding billing and my lab results. I could have been informed during my visit that the wellness billing code would not be used in any way (using it plus another code could have, per the insurance company, mitigated some of the cost). Because such communication was lacking (and because this doctor wrote a letter to the opposite effect), I think some compromise on the final balance due would have been fair. Shay had paperwork explaining that refilling prescriptions could result in additional billing, but I could not have predicted that the entire visit would be coded to the maximum possible reimbursement. I think it is unfair to expect lay people to have this level of knowledge, particularly as there is a variance among providers in billing practices for these visits. At the least, I would have expected timely communication of my lab result. I would have begun taking a needed supplement months earlier if I had seen my lab results, and would have appreciated a simple acknowledgement that my health was comprised when I didn't receive it. For what it's worth, I paid my bill in full before submitting this review, and within days of hearing back from the billing office.

I met with Sam, and we worked on a recovery plan involving PRP. Within 8-10 week I was fully healed, lifting weights, doing pull-ups, living life like it never happened. I later went on to utilize the same approach on multiple other tendinopathy issues with Sam. Recently (Oct. 2025) I had a rotator cuff flare up and once again PT just wasn't cutting it for my recovery. I found out Dr. Sam had opened his own clinic, met with him, and he meticulously combed through my shoulder with the ultrasound device and we pinpointed some definite spots that needed some love. Within 30 minutes I was in and out-- and I couldn't even feel the pinch of the needle. Sam and Karla (front desk) are kind, thorough and I truly felt like they had my best interest at heart, and weren't just shoving treatment at me for a quick buck. Highly recommend if you're a weightlifter or someone in a physically demanding job field. Check them out.

As soon as I resisted, he said, "well, you can do what you want, but . . . " as if I would experience dire consequences from my reluctance to have water shot up my posterior. At that point, the house of cards fell. The emperor was found to be unclothed. I never went back, and I'm embarrassed that I even went at all. The only advice I can credit to Dr. Tony was to eat food and drink water. Other than that, all of it was nonsense.
