She seems to have become quite famous in Yelp reviews. This dilute calico beauty has her bolt holes among the packaged goods or by the register. She's the equivalent of finding the little mouse that moves around the room in the children's classic bedtime book, "Goodnight Moon". This liquor store is the Grand Central station of Cow Hollow with all sorts of people always going in and out, it's very communal. Usually I tend to get wine or beer at the grocery store since that tends to be cheaper but Luke's next door is way more expensive and has lot of brands I've never heard of. For a liquor store they have a pretty large selection of half bottles of wine which is nice if you don't like to drink a lot or you can mix and match with people that like something different. 5 stars because they have a store cat named Lilly that is always there hanging out. She often likes to take afternoon sun naps on the side of the store by the window. read more

These guys did away with their froyo business RIP. Go across the street diagonally to Loving Cup. This is the go to spot for froyo. Hidden in the back of a wine & spirits shop is an unassuming counter that serves up the good stuff. I visit at least twice a month, sometimes daily. Tips: 1. Kids size is fine most of the time. Small size can be too big. 2. Favorite is chocolate + peanut butter with Reese's peanut butter cup. 3. For healthy selection go with tart + fruit. Less healthy, gummy bears. Good stuff. read more

I ordered a nice bottle of whiskey (order costing over $100) for a friend in SF and the store delivered the bottle to the wrong address. I tried to get a refund several times, but they would not respond to my requests. Instead, they blamed the delivery service they use and made it my problem. Did a quick stop to pick up some things as a girlfriend needed a nicotine fix. We stopped by on Saturday, December 16th around 9:30pm. First, thanks Curt L. for bringing me homemade enchiladas!!!! So, I'm at work and Curt L. brings me food! Then we decide to go grab some dessert. It was either That Takes the Cake or fro-yo from here. Fro-yo it was since Curt just had his bday and he's had way too much cakes from it. I first knew about this place when a client walks in with fro-yo.. Strawberry shortcake fro-yo that is... I knew right then and there that I would definitely have to put a be back in 30 sign just to grab some. Today was the day since Curt was here. We closed up the shop and walked on over which was only a block away. There was a line of people inside the liquor store but the wait wasn't long. There were plenty of flavors to choose from but not enough tart flavors. There was the original tart, cookies and creme, vanilla, chocolate, pumpkin, etc.. I went for the pumpkin and was hoping to get MOCHii as a topping since it has been forever since I've had fro-yo.. But they didn't have MOCHii!!! I was disappointed. But, I replaced it with just crush graham cracker crumbs.. A great alternative but I still wanted MOCHii. My small pumpkin with graham cracker and Curt's small vanilla with gummi bears and graham cracker was just $7.50 which is not that bad. I was excited to dig in, which I did. The first bite..... too much spices and not enough pumpkin flavor.. I tasted more ginger/clove/cinnamon then pumpkin... It was good but not what I had expected. When you walk in, you'll see a Mitchell's ice cream counter on the left and the fro-yo machines in the back. They had nine flavors that day: Peanut Butter, Classic Vanilla, Chocolate, Vanilla Malt, Chocolate Brownie, Roasted Almond, Strawberry Shortcake, Vanilla and Plain Tart. I didn't see any mochi balls but they had good toppings, fresh fruit, nuts, granola, dried fruit, candy bits, mini gummy bears, Jelly Bellies and mini M&Ms. * Small (6 oz.) $2.75 * Medium (12 oz.) $3.50 * Large (16 oz.) $4 Toppings, 75 cents I ordered a small plain tart with blueberries. Unlike other places, they don't put the toppings on top, but they appear in the middle and in generous amounts and you get a good amount of fro-yo too. This seemed like a good idea (keeps the toppings from falling off) until I realized that most of my fresh blueberries had hardened and started to freeze over. The fro-yo is nice and tangy and it's on the icy side though not too icy (could be creamier though). It's not too stiff and not too soft. The aftertaste is sweet and pleasant. With Cultive (Union St. and Buchanan St.) grand opening earlier in the week, I'm not sure how much longer will this corner store will be serving frozen yogurt. I enjoyed eating the frozen treat from the newest fro-yo place. But Michaelis also make good fro-yo too. Despite the mysterious weather and the conclusion of the winter holiday season, I had the seasonal Egg Nog flavored fro-yo in a medium cup for $3.50. I also got Cookie dough chunks as my lone topping to complete my treat. The egg-nog flavor was very creamy and tasted like the actual holiday beverage. The shop isn't shy in piling it on too (just look at my picture). I don't come here too often, but I hope this corner store continues to serve fro-yo and not let the new competitior affect them. read more

My Gawd! Fricken best peanut butter froyo I've ever had...in a liquor store?!? FACT! I'm still not sure if I want to thank or curse my friend who introduced this to me. I was really excited to try the frozen yogurt here. I love places where you can find a good variety of fun and delicious flavors. And they do have a good selection and pricing. On this particular trip though, the guy got my order wrong and gave me banana cheesecake yogurt instead of New York cheesecake, which sadly I didn't notice until I had already left and started digging into my second flavor. The banana cheesecake tasted really artificial and a little icy... Luckily, my other flavor choice was the peanut butter. I'm a sucker for peanut butter frozen yogurt, and this one was delicious and creamy which made up for the unwanted flavor and mixed so nicely with my yogurt chip topping. So overall a pretty good place for frozen yogurt, and I might check back to sample my other flavor options. Just want to make sure they are serving from the correct dispenser. read more

Before I moved to the Marina, my friend Jason wanted to go for froyo one night, and he suggested a place on Union. I thought he was referring to Cultive, and he was like, no, a liquor store. What??? So that's how I found Michaelis, which is seriously a liquor store that serves up froyo and Mitchell's ice cream. I am not making this up. Now, this place is right around the corner from my new pad, and here are three very good reasons why I really like this place: 1) Unpretentious. Unlike some of the trendier Asian froyo shops, the people here are really nice and genuine. 2) Truly CCG. $2 for a kid's size, $3 for a small, $4 for a medium. Small was more than enough for me, as it's a pretty healthy dose of froyo swirled into the cup. 3) SOY-BASED FROYO?! YES. Yes, all you lactards rejoice! Although it's only one flavor (vanilla), it tastes very good. It's not as creamy smooth as regular froyo, but it's a pleasantly icy texture that really tastes like vanilla soymilk.. but better. They have rotating flavors I believe, and yesterday they had vanilla, chocolate, tart, strawberry, grasshopper pie, cookies & cream, and coffee among their selections. Despite shivering in the chilly spring San Francisco evening, regardless of the six blocks we had just hiked, which should have warmed us up but didn't, Mike still marched me in here for frozen yogurt. There was quite the line in Michaelis. For a booze shop, they have quite a lot of fans of frozen yogurt. They have ice cream too, but only one fan of that. At least, when we were there. She got herself a huge bowl of mint-chocolate chip. "See, you can have ice cream AND fresh breath too!" I said. It was a lot funnier in my head. By the time we got to the front of the line, we were next. No big surprise there, that's how that kind of thing usually works. And Michaelis was no different. I was hoping for a mixture of chocolate and peanut butter, in a nice swirl. They weren't in the same machine, so no luck for me. And what am I thinking, mixing anything with chocolate? Ok so the service isn't that great and you kinda feel like an inconvenience asking the guy behind the counter selling the liquor to get you some frozen yogurt, but the yogurt is yummy and they have a decent amount of toppings (which they charge you 50 cents if you want extra). However, I don't like how they only put the "toppings" in the middle and not on top, I mean they are called toppings! I usually get the country vanilla with cookie dough and almonds, yum. I'm not going to lie, I have an unhealthy obsession with froyo. Ok, maybe it's actually semi-sorta-quasi healthy because at least it's FROZEN YOGURT instead of ice cream. Anyway, the "froyoplaceonUnion&Filmore" (this is the only epithet I will ever give this place) is a daily stop for me. A medium froyo here can easily last me 2 nights (or a night and drunken munchies later that same night). They always have awesome flavors. Grasshopper is one of my personal favs. So, another reason this place rocks. I'm a little bit of a connoisseur of Fernet. It's a staple in my drinking diet. I was here the other day (getting my daily dose of froyo, CLEARLY), and saw a gleaming bottle of fernet among the mini, airplane sized booze bottles. What a very pleasant surprise for a hungover Sunday afternoon. My friends and I were strolling around the Marina and wanted some "froyo." One of my friends suggested Tutti Melon, an idea that was fortunately shot down quickly and replaced by this gem we found looking on Yelp. Let me just say, this place definitely lives up to its positive Yelp reviews. The froyo itself is honestly some of the best I've ever had. The price is really frickin good for what you get (including the toppings and amount). And the service is excellent. The froyo from here literally made my day! I highly recommend trying the peanut butter flavor. Actual words from my friend after trying a bite of my peanut butter froyo, "I don't even like peanut butter and that is really good!" So, even if you don't like peanut butter, give it a try. ..or try one of the 7 other delicous flavors. A little history......way back when, this corner liquor store was not in the running to be the hot spot to get fro yo. There was a small market next door, and THAT was the place to get your frozen yogurt. They happened to close for a while and relocate to the other side of Union, across Filmore. During their pause, the corner store literally cornered the market of the fro yo business. Now that the other place is back, it's not as great as Michaelis. Why is the other market not so great? 1. On the shady side of street 2. Measly serving size and price compared to Michaelis 3. Not as many flavors and fewer options. Michaelis serves it up well on the frozen yogurt. Spend 10 minutes hanging out and all kinds of people come to get their "meals" (fro yo for a meal? come on skinnies, eat more!) Great assorted flavors to choose from: wow cow, honey hill, etc...always rotating with the staple vanilla custard and chocolate and Frostline vanilla and chocolate on the board. $2.50 for a small, and it's a healthy small. Cup or cone and also to go. Standard toppings to choose from (chips, sprinkles, nuts, candies) and they do it well by integrating it in the middle and also on the top and all over. When I headed to Michaelis Wine & Spirit this Tuesday night for some frozen-yogurt, I was fairly disappointed in the flavor options. Most of the flavors were some form of chocolate or vanilla... I ended up settling on cookies & cream (basically tasted like chocolate) and angel food cake (basically tasted like vanilla) with chocolate sprinkles. It was definitely not as good as the pumpkin fro-yo I enjoyed last time & was craving. The serving was generous and the chocolate sprinkles were great though! I threw in a York's Peppermint Patty and pack of fruity gum to make the $5 credit card minimum (I should be on the Price is Right, it was $5 exactly!). read more
