It's not like I'm going into an employees-only zone; it's just a weird area that they use to store stuff when there's no room to put it out. The people who work here are universally friendly and efficient, which is even more remarkable when you see the annoyingness they have to deal with on an hourly basis. There are people demanding specific Scratchers and others taking stuff directly from the counter without paying (they have a tab?) and others trying to butt in when I'm trying to guy stuff. The cashiers, though; they don't let anyone ruin their flow. I believe they charge more when you use a credit card, which is technically illegal in California (you're allowed to give cash discounts, but you're not allowed to charge more for not using cash), but I usually buy my corner-store necessities with cash anyway, so it doesn't (usually) affect me. The place is also totally wheelchair inaccessible. There's no front step or anything, but I can barely fit through the aisles. A wheelchair definitely wouldn't fit. It can be a convenient place to pick up stuff when I'm in the area, but I could do without the random dudes who hang out just outside the door and lean against the side wall. I can think of so many more pleasant places to hang out and listen to music than on a dirty sidewalk on Mission Street.

I usually drink white wine so I needed help with a light red like a Pinot or Zin. Longtime employee Michael who works once a week to fill in and help the owner was super simpatico. He worked with my budget of under $25, found a delicious red by Paso Robles vineyard Rabble. It had a delicious balance of minerality and a sour cherry finish. It was the counterpoint to a Napa red I occasionally enjoy but am tiring of its insistent, jammy, fruit-forward note. Rabble was a good change of pace. While this store has been a neighborhood mainstay for 30 years, it was my first time wandering in. It's across the street from my dearly loved green grocer, Green Earth Natural Foods, so it's a convenient two-'fer errand. So grab your package of chicken and some endive- or a frozen burrito - and amble across the street and pick up something nice from Save-More. Save-More is famous for its whiskies so if you imbibe, you're in for a treat.

I was buying soda and snacks from him regularly for years when I got off the bus right in front of his store. One day, I realized I had purchased a soda that had expired two years before. This was the first time that ever happened to me here. When I brought it back to him, he figuratively swatted me away with his hands and told me to go pick something else up in the back. I wasn't thirsty at the time, so I asked for my money back, and he laughed in my face and said, "What? You think I'm made of money?" I understand that things fall through the cracks, but how could there possibly be something that expired two years ago in a store whose sodas I bought regularly and were never expired? The dude knew me, joked with me, but he was dead serious this time. He wouldn't refund my money. So I stopped coming back. And then when I moved back to the area after my flat was rebuilt after the fire, I stopped in here and had four minutes before the bus was coming. I chatted up the younger guy, and apparently, he's the new owner. I've returned three or four times since then, always while waiting for the 5 to take me west. The store looks nicer than it used to, although all the shelves rattle whenever you walk down the aisles, like that scene from Jurassic park where the water in the SUV's cup holder vibrates when the T-rex is approaching. The prices are the normal ripoffs you expect from corner stores. It's A-OK, but again, it's still the second best corner store at its particular corner. When…read moreI lived nearby, my apartment was more or less equidistant between this place and Mike's Liquors & Groceries on Mission Street, and although Mike's was a way bigger scene and generally rowdier, I much preferred it over Ed & Danny's, because this place sucks. THE GOOD It's clean. Remarkably clean for what it is, where it is, and how large it is. I believe this space used to be the building's garage, so it extends way way back from the front entrance, which could be an issue in the case of a robbery. THE BAD Where to start? They have the weirdest sizes of sodas. Almost no diet anything, or if they have it, it's tiny. I came in here at least twelve times. I don't think they ever once had a two-liter Diet Pepsi. Everything is pretty expensive. Yes, it's a corner store, so things are going to be more expensive, but when you combine high prices with poor selection and horrible customer service, what's the point? I came mostly when I first moved to the Mission in the middle of 2023, but I also came sporadically after that, mainly when I was walking back from parking my car east of South Van Ness. I came mostly in the afternoon, but I was here at night on a few occasions as well. Every single time I came here, the cashier was on his Bluetooth earpiece talking to someone on the phone from the moment I walked into the store to when I was paying and as I was leaving. That is, he never once said a word to me or even acknowledged me by nodding or smiling or making any kind of hand gestures. Nope, he just grabbed my stuff and rang it up as he continued his mostly angry (?) conversations with whomever for literally every second of time I spent in this place over two years. This was also the site of a robbery in which someone either drove their car through the security gate or tried to rip the security gate off by attaching it to their car. And that same night, someone was murdered a block away. At the time, police believed the corner-store robbery and murder a block away were related. I only came in here a couple of times after that, and when I was way in back, I always thought about whether I should try to run out or hide in the back in case of a robbery. So yeah, it's a totally shady place. And the dude is rude. Who talks on the phone that long? Who would want to talk to this guy?
