I popped into Plumpjack while staying with friends to buy wine for our family dinner. The shop is cozy but has a decent selection. I was looking for a Barolo on this visit and found a lovely Damilano Barolo and a rosso di Montalcino from one of my favorite Tuscan producers, Ciacci Piccolomini. The main players in the bourbon, rum and spirits game JUST in case you aren't a wine fan (or just need to up your Elderflower game last minute). But most importantly, an extremely knowledgeable (read nerdy, in a good way) staff. It's the perfect storm for a neighborhood shop. Be about that wine life. I know nothing about wine, I'm a cocktail guy. So I go in because I've heard this is the place to go for wine guidance. Instead, I was met with condescension. The general manager and the resident wine geek ( the main guy?) made me feel like I was a schmuck for coming in. I simply asked a few questions of one of the sales reps. They didn't know how to answer my question and they were treated like s*it for that. I apparently committed the cardinal sin of not knowing that Primitivo and Zinfandel were the same thing. The younger gentleman who helped me told me they didn't carry it and it was in fact illegal in the state of California. Confession: I am that basic B marina girl who tries to walk in unseen so I can hide out between the aisles to use my Vivino app. in peace. Regardless, every single time I am met with a kind and helpful staff member offering help. I'd then sheepishly say no thank you and continue to scan every single bottle of Sauvignon Blanc under $15. Sometimes I'd be a little less basic and scan bottles under $20. (For those who don't know, Vivino is a free wine reviewing app / community, aka a Yelp for wine.) When I saw this place pop up in the news I decided I wanted to write my review from last year based on actual experience. We did a girls trip last year and stopped by this place. WORST SERVICE EVER! We stopped by to pick up some wine for a dinner party that we had planned. We wanted to try something new and money was not an option. This was the first time that we've ever seen DRUNK EMPLOYEES! Slurring their words, laughing at everything and not helpful at all. We actually looked around for cameras because we thought we were being punked. Nope! Just the weirdest experience. Plumpjack is a convenient place to pick up wine and spirits in Marina/Cow Hollow. The store is clean, organized and not overwhelming. Every time I visited Plumpjack, the salesman didn't greet me or even make the initiative to offer help. Their wine selections change according to customer preferences and they get new shipments Tuesday - Friday. Their wines are mainly priced from $15+ with a few under $15. They have a "20 under $20" section with various bottles of reds, whites and zinfandels. I really like how they put prices on every bottle. They offer a lot of non-California wines. Also, if you purchase wine here, you can take it across the street to Balboa Cafe and open the first bottle without a corkage fee! I haven't bought liquor here, but it looks like they have a decent selection of whiskeys. If you're buying a gift here, they'll wrap up the bottle. Also, you can get a free delivery from Postmates here. You pay for the booze, they'll cover delivery. read more

I cannot say enough good things about PlumpJack! From their wine selections to their friendly staff, this place is my go to stop to get some delicious wines! I also want to give a shoutout to their amazing sales rep, Dina, who is so knowledgable in her wines and what wine to pair with what food. I joined the wine club because of her experience and I haven't been disappointed yet! I'm typically a red wine kind of guy, but it's been really fun to also try out some of their white wine selections as well. My selection of wines and tequila from my Plumpjack order were amazing. I was helped by Dina who specifically chose Casamigos tequila brands which were unbelievably good and my first time trying them. The wines were an interesting mix of whites and reds from regions spanning the globe that I wouldn't think to try previously and was pleasantly surprised by. I went here during The Bold Italic's microhood event. It was near the end of the event, so I wasn't sure if they were going to rush me out. That was not the case. The man behind the counter was so welcoming and we talked about other events happening in the neighborhood, as well as vineyards and wineries that we enjoy. I perused through their $20 section, which btw has a good variety, and found a Hoenig label that my boss always orders for our Christmas lunch at the Hayes Valley Grill. As someone who loves wine and has a budget, I think it's fantastic that this place has a section like this. I'm definitely coming back here to check out more of their inventory. read more

I was attracted to PlumpJack just by the name, but then I got to know it's personality and I liked it even more. My supervisor, a Marina native, told me all about the wine shop and sister restaurant on the kitty-corner, Balboa Cafe, and raved about their no corking fee if you purchase wine from PlumpJack. And so that is what we did! Becca M and I made our way over to PlumpJack following a Yelp Community event at Taylor Stitch and sifted through the numerous bottles of whites (she's not a red drinker, which was a bit of a let-dwon). The eye-catcher when you first enter the store is the "20 under $20", a rack of wines ranging in price and variety. The salesman working there was very informative and helpful and suggested a few wines that were in our price range. We brought them over to Balboa Cafe and enjoyed them with our Ceasar Salad and Risotto. 'Twas a lovely evening of not getting gouged on wine. We drank one bottle and I took the other home, and let me tell you, I am very excited to sip on a $12.99 bottle of wine, rather than my usual $3 bottle. Bottoms up, y'all! read more

If one has zero taste or knowledge of wine, one goes here and thinks it is ok, if one has taste, one visit is enough to make sure you will never go back. Lousy service, worse wine. It is in the infamous "triangle" (Tales of the City, Armistead Maupin) and is avoided by those who are familiar with the area. It is meant for tourists, which is basically a swear word in SF. PlumpJack always reminds me of walking into a cool, dark cave for some reason. Oooh, and a cave with beverages - how nice. In my continuing quest for the perfect wine shop, I have visited PlumpJack on several occasions - almost always with good results. I have found the service to be slightly stand-offish in a 'we will let you come to us' sort of way. But if you do approach a staff member they are quite helpful and friendly. There are also tastings available. UPDATE: I went to PlumpJack looking for a Christmas present for a friend. The service could not have been nicer or more helpful! After several insightful questions, I was lead to a great bottle of wine that fit comfortably within my price range and was a great hit on Christmas day. read more

Snobbish, even for the neighborhood! Let me tell you something. Something that surprised even me. The first time i went to PlumpJacks I was dressed well and was treated well. Bought a few bottles and they were more than happy to make some recommendations that worked out well. So far so good - solid first experience right?. Well things quickly went downhill. I decided to go back about one month later and even planned to purchase a case of Sancerre. This time I had just come back from golfing the day after rain. I was dressed rather shabby and had mud on my clothes. I couldn't get the time of day and it wasn't because they were too crowded. I know with certainty I was assessed as someone not likely to spend a decent amount of money and cast aside. Well their loss and I never plan to return. There are far too many places with good customer service that want my business and don't care who I am or how I look. Two stars because the original person who helped me wasn't working this day. Ok, so I'm born and bred in the heart of the Wine Country [why do they put that phrase in reverse??? Stupid.] And because of the fact that I have been involved, in one way or another, with wine my whole life, I do not find it that captivatingly chic. I think good wines are good and great wines are good, and shit wines, well, shit. I also know that a lot of the wine we "gold medal" and those we give a unanimous "two thumbs down" to are quite often from the same vineyard (yes, they round up all the delicious little green, gold and purple globes and sell them to the highest bidder). From there, they are handed over to the glorious Wine Maker. Therein lies the craft. Plumpjack has always been a keen student of the cool and excellent wine makers of our current time. They've directed me to the best for whatever occasion I was purchasing for and have NEVER failed me. One star off because Mr. Nu-Nu-Nu-Nu-Nu-Nu-uuuuuuuu-ewsome is part owner. read more

It's been about a year since we've visited, but we are looking forward to making another trip! It's important to note that most of the recent 1 star reviews are due to people who are angry that Gavin Newsom's winery is still open during this pandemic. They haven't actually visited the PlumbJack and are proud of themselves for "tanking the reviews" (direct quote from a friend of a friend on Facebook). Purchased several bottles here and I must say, the range is impressive and the prices aren't offensive. Under $20 bottles as well as harder to find small vineyards. Oh, and a killer bourbon collection apparently. The woman helping me yesterday was spot on with suggestions. Being that she is a former chef, I was compelled to ask when she works so I can return. Better service in my opinion than the Noe valley location where everything is "so good" according to the salespeople who can't exactly elaborate on anything without wine notes. I like this wine shop. It seems to have a strategic selection of bottles and the keepers of them are helpful when a novice (like myself) needs to select one. A simple question like "what cab would you drink if you have $20 to spend," can lead to a recommendation that costs a mere $13, is very popular with other drinkers, and tastes as good as its pricier sisters.
