I went to Michaels yesterday to get a gift card. I am waiting in like for about 15 minutes. There was an issue with someone at the register. Looked like the cashier was training as she kept trying to get assistance. An associate by the name of Connor, kept coming over then leaving. There are about 10 people in line. I'm not sure at what point they say okay let me help the rest of the customers. In addition, the manager walks by and encourages people to use the self check out (while one machine was not working). I've placed a couple of online orders from this Michaels store--once for Halloween and again for this year's Christmas party. For Halloween, I ordered the purple Crinkle Cut Paper Shred online from the Fair Lakes Shopping Center location. My husband picked it up, and when we brought it home, the smell was awful--like mold and mildew. I ended up having to spread it out on a sunny table, spray it with disinfectant and perfume, and let it air out for two whole days before I could even use it. Fast forward to Christmas, I ordered Wilton blue melting chocolate from the same store to make cake pops. My husband picked it up last night, but when I opened the bag, the chocolate had already melted and clumped together because air had somehow gotten into the packaging. Now, I have to make yet another trip to the store to exchange it, which is frustrating. I really think the managers and staff at this location need to pay closer attention to quality control and how they handle their inventory. I get that Michaels carries a ton of products, and I can understand if off-season items sometimes get overlooked. But the items I ordered were seasonal essentials--things that should've been flying off the shelves. For example, melting chocolates are super popular during the Christmas season. Yet, I noticed that some of the chocolates in this store were close to expiring. That's just not okay--it makes it seem like the products aren't being cared for properly, which is disappointing from a customer's perspective. Before moving here, I lived in Orange County, Southern California, and I always enjoyed shopping at Michaels there. The products were consistently top-notch and well-maintained. Since moving here, I've been let down every time I've ordered online from the Fair Lakes Michaels store. I know a lot of people, like me, rely on online shopping because life is busy. I hope the staff here can step up their game by managing inventory more carefully, clearing out old stock faster, and making sure seasonal items--especially food products--are in the best possible condition. Online customers deserve to receive quality products without the added stress. However Something I notice every time I go to the store is how the short-haired staff member who speaks Korean consistently goes above and beyond--she's always so friendly and exceptionally good at her job. read more

Michaels has an application you can download on your phone to locate coupons. This is a great time of year to visit since there are more sales than usual. There are lots of holiday bins with decorating crafts, stockings and beautiful wrapping items. This store is huge. It is nicely laid out. If you want to stay on task, make your shopping list and don't look around. Everything is too tempting. There was a decent selection of scrapbooking items, yard and crochet projects, jewelry and beading items and so much more. This store is close to BJ's, Walmart and the Olive Garden. read more

I was so excited be able to do curbside pick-up and get supplies during this pandemic, but it was a mess! I get that it can be confusing, but the employee already seemed irritated when he got to my car window. I am immunocompromised, on immunosuppressants, and have asthma. I shouldn't have to justify wanting to be cautious during a pandemic that has claimed many lives. There were no instructions as to how the exchange would be handled, but I assumed it wouldn't be that big of a deal. Wegman's does no contact curbside pick up. They just check your id and put your medicine on the hood. Super easy and no fuss. I pointed to the hood of my car in hopes that he would get it. He walked over there but then tried to lift the hood. I get that it is storage for some cars, but it's not for an old yaris. I understood and as I was trying to get a handle on the situation the employee ended up going around to my passenger door-where my dog (not on a leash) was and tried to open the door! I couldn't believe it! Covid aside-what if my dog decided to bolt? or even bite him! (though she's a sweetie. But he doesn't know that) Luckily, I had locked my doors beforehand. He seemed irritated by the whole situation. I then put on a mask and started to crack my window to ask if he could put it on the hood, but he immediately tried to put the bag through the window crack. I immediately asked him to put it on the hood, and he quickly did so and ran off. I called the store to let the manager know for the health and safety of others as far as Covid-19 goes (maybe try wegman's method of curbside pick up) and also because he tried to open my door with my unleashed dog right there. It all just felt so irresponsible and haphazard. Turns out the guy that brought my purchase out IS THE MANAGER! To be fair he did say sorry (though rather disingenuously) and said I "should've just told him to put it on the hood". So take what you will from that. read more

Michaels was always my go-to store for crafts; however, my last experience was pretty disappointing. 910am on a Friday morning. I was carrying my crying 19 month old toddler in one arm and holding my 4 year old in another. There was an associate right when I walked in. I greeted her and asked her if the store had any stepping stones where you can create a paw print or handprint. She used her ear piece and someone relayed that it was in aisle XX. I went to aisle XX way in the back and it was definitely not it; the aisle was for paints and paintbrushes. I walked a few aisles over until I saw another associate putting up Christmas crafts in the middle of the school. She said that the stepping stone was seasonal and if there are any they are in aisles 14-19. I then went to aisle 14, then 15, then 16... Enough was enough trying to wrangle 2 kids inside a craft store. How can 2 (maybe 3) associates not know where the things they sell are?!? I really hope the store hires better associates. I hate to write Michaels off, but unfortunately, I just might... Off to Walmart I go (where within 5 minutes an associate tells me exactly where the product (in stock too!) was)! read more

I like Michaels, I really do. I'm not a major crafter, but when I want to work on a project I come here first. Most times they have what I need, but not always. I do love to browse here in any event, and I always find something to keep me amused. They are woefully lacking when it comes to art supplies, particularly high end art supplies. They lock up their Prismacolor pencils so you have to track someone down. I usually say forget it because i don't feel like searching out someone just to buy a pencil for $1.79. I can go to another local art store and get those pencils without having to bother the sales people since they are not locked up. Anyway, I digress. My major beef with Michaels is the staff at Fair Lakes. Take tonight for instance. They have a sale on mason jars at the moment, so I was stocking up for a project. A sales person walks by and says, "You know we have those in packs?" I asked her if they were the same (fantastic) price and she says, "Oh, I don't know. Let me check." I wait. And wait. I finally decided I needed to move on. I see her ten minutes later and she doesn't even acknowledge me or remember our conversation! ???? Also tonight: I needed a certain type of flower to go with said mason jar project. Granted, this is more of a spring type flower but Michaels does have a wide variety all year round. So I asked the cashier when they might get that flower in stock and she said to ask the manager, who was right behind us. Manager was not in the mood to help customers at that moment, apparently. I asked her about this flower and she laughs at me. Laughs at me! She let me know in no uncertain terms that they wouldn't be getting that until February or March. How silly of me to think otherwise! She was also very unprofessional while discussing with a cashier how "corporate sucks when it comes to sending stuff on time," right in front of me. I'm pretty sure "corporate" would not be pleased to hear you are spouting your own personal complaints about the company in front of the customers. Sooo....if you just feel like browsing, Michaels is fun and affordable. If you have a specific need, however, take your chances with the employees who work there. read more

Holy crap I HATE this place. I just started up photography, and when people buy prints many of them ask for them to be framed. So I head on over to Michael's to check out prices. When there's a sale, it's awesome: I recently got a frame that is usually priced at $10.99 for $5.99. Not bad. But aside from the occasional steals you can get (which you can get at any Michaels), this location sucks major spherical objects. MAJOR. I went in to return something, and with at least three lanes open and and less than ten people in line, it still took over twenty minutes for me to even be helped. First of all: the people here are lack even a pinch of professionalism. One girl was yelling, saying she hated the stupid kid who "put this here" (a small trinket) and said she wanted to knock his head off. In front of everyone standing in lane one. Are you kidding me? She then proceeds to strut off with a broom in hand to clean up something, the whole time yelling and whenever someone called her over the intercom she threw a hissy fit. Incredible. Second of all: a poor woman wanted to get some decorative rhinestones/crystals/whatever and they were locked on the rack. She was there before I got helped. And after I got helped. I'm not sure if anyone actually helped her. Despite three people wandering over, listening to her plight, and then shrugging and walking off or saying "I don't have them (keys)" in an apathetic manner, she might have never gotten helped. Third of all, the state of the store is in shambles, at best. The last two or three times I have been there (at various times in the day) everything is unorganized, sale signs are on the floor, tags are ripped off, and you're basically on your own. The only reason I would ever go to this place is because the other one is farther from my apartment and might consist of getting onto 66 (another nightmare). But I'm seriously considering battling 66 to avoid this place. UGH. read more

Michaels - always crowded with long lines at checkout and a slightly disorganized set up although I am sure filled with everything a crafter could ever want. So why the four star rating? Clearly this hasn't started as a "I'm a fan" review. Mahmoud in the framing department is fantastic. We had received an antique silk print from a former neighbor in Fair Lakes as a gift. It was beautiful and we wanted to be able to display it, but had no clue on how to frame it ourselves. We headed to Michaels to get ideas and were simply overwhelmed by the selection of frames, mats, colors, etc. Mahmoud came to assist us so I showed him the print and asked his opinion. He stared at it for a couple of minutes after asking some basic questions and then picked out three mats in complementary colors as well as the perfect frame. Great thing about Michaels, there is always a sale on framing. This time it happened to be 60% off so we decided to let Mahmoud work his magic. We are so very pleased with the results. The colored mats he chose brought out the beautiful colors in the print and framed it was just striking. I am proud to have this beautiful keepsake hanging in my home. Sadly this review is about one year overdue. I have an oil canvas I need to get framed and I only hope Mahmoud is still there to help me with this one as well! read more

I think it's just been a bad week of customer service for me, so this will be a bit of a rant. I'm planning my wedding, so I come here a fair bit. Lately, I seem to continually luck out by getting this one girl at the check out. She's awful. No smiling, mumbling the price, no eye contact. Ugh. The only sign of life I saw from this girl was when the baby behind me did something cute. As long as you don't end up being served by little miss sour, this michaels is fine. And the plus is that they've finally started emailing 40% and 15% off coupons to their customers - especially good seeming that they distribute their coupons in the Sunday newspaper and I don't buy the paper. read more

It's a craft store. Put two and two together. C... I went in for two glass blocks. You know the ones that look like ice cubes, sometimes you see walls made of them, people also like to stick Christmas lights down in them... okay... so they are glass right? One would THINK they would be with the glass stuff. Nope. I am directed to the wood department... uh, okay. I get to the wood department looking for my glass blocks. Nothing. I go searching for one of the five teenagers that were working. "Oh, those are in the glass section"... ah, of course they are... but see, here is the thing... THEY ARE NOT! - Finally, another teenager tells me they are in isle 7 with the cardboard stuff... Well Duh!! Silly me!! Of COURSE IT IS! I only go for the framing -- and for my money, ask for Mahmoud -- he's the gold standard in framing, attention to detail, and craftsmanship. Seriously, if you need to, wait for him -- it'll make all the difference in the end. In fact, I'm almost hesitant not to share this because I feel like he's our best kept secret... They run specials every few months, so be sure to take advantage of the 60% off framing coupons that come out in the local ads. Other than frames and framing, my wife tells me they sell a host of wonderful crafts -- but I've never bought a single thing that hasn't involved framing or hanging frames. read more

I came here on a weekend. Over the intercom they continually announced the tables set up around the store with people to help sign up for their classes. What they didnt state was that the people were not employed by Michaels and if asked for help with anything except for signing up for a class, they would simply blow you off with a "I don't actually work here." This left a bad impression on me. The store itself is what I typically expect from a crafting store. The aisles are tight, you can find glue in 3 different sections, employees are either at the check-out counters or in the far back. Store is organized and clean, and prices are ok, there is always a coupon online, however good luck trying to use the coupon, cashiers never want to take my coupons, they act like they are paying out of pocket if they give me a discount, strangely the item im buying is almost always excluded from the coupon I have, even though I read all the exclusions before getting to the store, and since I'm already there I end up paying full price most of the times. GREAT place to shop for kids, and they have amazing deals during the holiday season. The store app often had coupons that they scan from your phone (no need to print). They don't have much by way of thread (basic weight and colors, plus transparent, which is really helpful); I'm guessing Jo Ann's Fabric is better for wide sewing options. The only thing I'm not crazy about is how slow they seem to move the checkout lines, no matter how staffed they are and how busy the store is. read more

I came here to pick up a order I placed online. Which was a big, big mistake because no one works here. I had to stand in line to be told to go to the frame desk at the back and no one is there. It says that I have to press a button, but no one comes when I press this button. Anyway, Im in no mood to lose my shit on anyone today, so I broke a bunch of stuff on my way out because they pissed me off. And who buys this crap anyway? I do a ton of shopping here for work & I've never had a bad experience. The place is clean, well lit, organized & the staff are super helpful. In fact, I like this location particularly due to one staff member - BETTY!! She's a cashier & does her job so well! She's quick, knowledgeable, never has an attitude or gets flustered (even when helping multiple customers at once). Since I work for the Govt and FCPS, she's always ready to handle my tax exempt check-out & makes sure to add our teacher discount! Next time I'm there I will HAVE to get her name & update this post. The only thing I don't like about Michaels in general is the fact that prices can be a bit high, so you have to keep an eye on what you're spending there. And since this location is right next door to WalMart, it's easy to leave things on the shelf here to go find them over there. read more
