I love this Michaels. It's spacious, bright, and always tidy. It does seem to bring in a crowd so sometimes my items are out of stock. I love the self checkout! It's so quick. I had curbside pick up today. I ordered online and my order was literally ready within 30 minutes. They send you a text notification to let you know it is ready and the parking space for curbside is right in front of the store. The lady that came out to bring my bag was super friendly. She joked about the weather since it was hot today but it was supposed to be cold. I know that is super small but it just goes to show how friendly she was not just here is your package bye. I really love this newer location. The store is super clean and organized. Each time I have been inside there are multiple people at the registers so the line always goes quickly even if it is long. read more

Improvements at the checkout are needed. The checkout has two options - a person or self checkout. Neither the layout nor the signage indicates where you should wait in a line. This lead to a confrontation with another customer when we were there. Apparently you are supposed to know to wait in a line to the end of the area to check out with a person or you join the hunger games action and compete for a self checkout spot. (Strike 1) The self-checkout stations didn't have a 'ready-for-customer' beacon like the ones manned by people so customers would approach a closed/non-functioning self checkout and awkwardly have to return to the line. It has so much more to offer than just art and craft supplies. There are classes where you "pay to play" for both adults and kids, a great way to get involved or pick up something new and meet new people. This store is one of the newer Michaels stores in the area. Helpful and friendly staff, same style layout for familiarity and kept clean. Then there's the constant discounts that change throughout the year; 50% off Christmas items, 40% off Halloween items, 50% off all baskets and decorative boxes, 40% off Fall items, buy one get one 50% off wedding decor etc etc - it's never ending! I really love this Michaels but I can't give it five stars because they have frequently been out of the items that I've needed. For instance, I knew they had terracotta pots and when I got there they didn't have the matching round drip catch bottom plate for sale. They were all out. It's just a bit of an inconvenience to go and know they usually carry something and then not have it be there. Otherwise, I love their products and the staff has always been super friendly and helpful. I would definitely give the framing team a five star review for the last job I had done there. Michael's is the go-to place for arts and crafts. Whatever you're in to, they have supplies for it. This location opened relatively recently, and is actually re-located from the larger Newport News store that was over by the Home Depot. I can understand why moving it to this location may be a bit better for casual shopping, but seems like a much smaller space than the old store. Aisles are narrow and it really seems packed in. Almost like Bed Bath and Beyond now. In terms of stock, I've noticed that they don't always have the best selection of different kinds of kids arts and crafts. They tend to release a seasonal line each year with a few options, but the general stock in the aisles is typically the same. My son really likes putting together mosaics, and now that we've done the four patterns like seven times, it's pretty boring even for him! Finally, despite having multiple checkout stations, it always seems like there is only one person working the register and you end up waiting in line for quite some time. So - pros: LOTS of different arts and craft supplies at decent prices (they often have coupons so sign up for their email list), cons: crowded, not a lot of variety, understaffed. read more

Hello, When my daughter, my nephew, and I went to visit the Michaels in Newport News near Patrick Henry Mall on July 8, 2022, around 7:35 pm, the most amazing thing happened to us. We were searching for some Chinese Lantern for my brother`s birthdate and asked this very nice lady by the name of Joanne did the store have any. Mrs. Joanne stated that the store doesn`t sell them. She then asked when I need them, and I told her today (which was the same day). Mrs. Joanne then said, "just stay right here". She returned back from her car with 9 Chinese Lanterns from her own private collection. I was so amazed and overjoyed by her extraordinary actions that my eyes started watering. Because it was hers (not from the store) that she gave me, I tried to pay her but, she would not take my money. I am truly grateful for Mrs. Joanne actions, and this is something that we will never forget. We were able to release the Chinese Lanterns later that night with pride and joy. To be honest and fair... This was one of the worst customer service situations I've ever experienced. Situation: I had a dresser/mirror backing that the mirror broke on during a recent move. I went to michaels because my family has had great success in getting things framed in the past. To start, the lady accepted the mirror backing and understood what I was wanting. Very nice lady and she gave me several quotes for how much it would cost. This was on October 17th. Her name is Julia and she was the one in charge of my entire purchase. However, I was told it was ready on October 31st. I arrive and the new mirror has a very uneven and ugly looking edge. The staff told me that that's just how she cut it and said it was ready to go. The staff, after a conversation, seemed to agree that the cut didn't look good at all and said they'd ask her the next day about getting a new mirror cut. I never received a phone call the next day and I had to follow up a few days later asking what the status is. The lady said she had to put a frame on it because the mirror was already glued down on it and she would break it if she moved it. But why glue it down if it looked so bad? She tells me that, "I guess I could maybe just order a frame or something, and I could frame it for you for free." So I say yes I'd like that, considering the situation. So she says she'll follow up the next day and contact my wife with details. She calls my wife and says she'll order a frame that blends in with the background and let her know when it's ready. Well, I call back after 2 weeks of nothing and ask what the status is of the mirror and frame. I spoke with a lady who sounded very irritated about my whole situation and said that when Julia called my wife that she said that it would be ready on November 31st and we'll call you. However, my wife never recalled that happening. So I say I understand. I come in on December 3rd (after no phone call) and check on the status. A man named Chase was very nice and searched very diligently for the mirror and frame. He couldn't find it so he found Crystal in the frame department to ask for help (she was on break). Crystal came up and helped Chase finalize the transaction. But when we asked why our frame was brown when the backing was black and the dresser was black, all they replied with was "Yeah; that's what the framer said looked best." So then my wife and I had to carry this super heavy mirror out of the store without any help or staff member offering help. So now, almost two months later we have a frame that is brown and a backing/dresser that is black, and we spent $55 on a huge waste of time for a product we don't like. No thanks Michaels, no thank you. I'm sorry this was not a positive review, I love giving businesses good reviews and benefit of the doubt but this was an atrocious situation. read more

I am so happy they moved to this location. The place is larger and bright. The store is welcoming and the signage throughout the store is spot on. In the old store I always had problems finding the price for items. The selection for items in each section is enormous. I was bummed that my coupon could only be used for certain items. Even if they are not on sale or clearance if they are marked with an n in the price , the coupon cannot be used. Big sad face. The check out lines were fast and easy. If you've ever been to another Michael's and have any expectations at all, don't set foot in this location. They apparently let a drunk monkey pick the layout. You'll never find what you're looking for if you expect it to have anything similar to the layout of other Michael's stores. And finding someone actually working on the floor to ask for assistance is impossible. I did see two "manager" types standing around talking in the back room through the window, but I guess actually helping customers is beneath them. read more
